Cats are wonderful and affectionate creatures that are very pleasant to keep at home. However, despite all their charms, they also have a couple of troubles. Like any other creature, they go to the toilet, and they need it clean every day, since no one walks cats. Many owners of such four-legged animals know firsthand that, despite regular cleaning, the litter box can begin to emit absolutely terrible odors over time.
Professional products
In pet stores, the range of products for cleaning cat litter and getting rid of pet marks on various surfaces varies in level of protection and pricing policy. Below are the top popular products that have been tested over time and have earned many positive reviews from consumers.
OdorGone
It is a widely used neutralizer - it will remove odors from carpets and upholstered furniture. This product is also intended for washing cat litter, for cleaning a pet’s bedding and for washing things that smell of the “aroma” of a pet.
OdorGone does not mask odors, but acts through local destruction of bacteria. The neutralizer is non-toxic and is used in homes with children and allergy sufferers. The product contains a complex of natural essential oils.
Zoosan
This drug affects not only odors, but also stains, including old ones. Area of application: houses with several (from three or more) animals, livestock farms, dog and cat kennels (clubs, veterinary clinics). Zoosan does not contain chlorine and phosphates, which is important if the product is planned to be used in the presence of children and asthma patients.
Dezosan
Treating carpet surfaces with Dezosan is made easier by the ability to pour the liquid solution into the container of a washing vacuum cleaner. Contact cleaning for small areas of carpet is also possible.
Manufacturers guarantee the destruction of odors of any strength by decomposing uric acid at the molecular level.
Urine-off Cat & Kitten
The product differs from a line of similar products in that it works at the level of pheromone suppression - that is, it discourages pets from marking treated surfaces. As a preventive measure or to eliminate traces of urine, it is enough to treat the carpet once with Urine-off Cat & Kitten, and the problem will be forgotten. From time to time it is recommended to carry out cleaning with this drug to remove associated odors that are always present in a house where there are animals.
The product contains no phosphates or chlorine.
Odor kill
A remedy for English lovers of cats and cleanliness, it fights all negative odors in general. At the same time, it leaves behind a delicious vanilla aroma. Odor kill is a concentrate that requires dilution with water. It is better to apply it using a spray bottle, spreading it over any surface with a soft sponge.
The product does not need to be washed off, it is harmless and does not contain allergens.
How to get rid of cat urine smell from carpet
Little kittens independently choose a place for the toilet, and the owner’s opinion does not interest them. The carpet often comes into the kittens' field of vision. Several days pass from the moment the pet appears in the home and the carpet becomes a source of a pungent odor.
You can remove the creepy smell from carpeting in different ways, take the product to the dry cleaner or handle the task yourself. In any case, we need to figure out why the cat ignores the litter box in order to protect the house from the appearance of similar odors in the future.
- The cat may not be happy with the size of the litter box. When choosing a tray, be guided by the length of the animal. The length of the tray should be one and a half times longer.
- Perhaps the kitten does not like the place where the tray is. Look for a more secluded corner. Cats do not like it if another pet's litter box is located next to the litter box.
- Unsanitary conditions are another reason why cats refuse to visit the litter box. The animals are very clean and have an excellent sense of smell. It is impossible to force a cat to go to a litter box that is dirty and smells bad. As a result, the cat uses a knitted hat lying on the floor as a toilet.
- Frightened, the pet may become depressed. In some cases, in an attempt to calm down, the cat marks its territory. During this process, she sprays urine. Therefore, be sure to identify the cause of stress and eliminate it.
- The appearance of a puddle in an inappropriate place often indicates revenge for grievances. If you have offended your pet, be patient and make amends. As for using brute force and isolating the animal, these techniques will make the situation worse.
- The appearance of cat urine in different places in the apartment is often preceded by the appearance of new objects and things in the house that pets consider as a threat. Using urine, pets put marks, showing unfamiliar objects who is boss in the house.
- Cats and male cats suddenly begin to mark their possessions. With the help of secretions, the male demonstrates superiority, and the female attracts members of the opposite sex. This is the nature of animals.
We looked at the main reasons why cats ignore the litter box. In most cases, it’s all the fault of the owner and his attitude towards the pet. Keeping pets should be a hobby, not a burden. Only in this case will the pet become obedient and fill the owner’s life with joy.
Now let's talk about traditional ways to combat urine odors on the carpet in an apartment. I will consider only the most effective methods.
It is recommended to treat light-colored carpets against urine with a solution of vinegar and water. For colored items, use a stain remover in this case. Moisten the stain with water and cover with a layer of baking soda. After the water has evaporated, vacuum the carpet or beat it outside. As a result, the soda will be removed along with the smell. To clean old carpets, use a solution of water and chlorine.
Pay attention to processing the cat crime scene. This product will not ruin even a light-colored carpet.
Alternatively, use a combined method: first chlorine, then soda. Upon completion of the procedure, vacuum the product and ventilate the room. Buy a detergent to remove unpleasant odors from a hardware store. Treat the contaminated surface, dry and vacuum. This will eliminate the odor and freshen the carpet.

If possible, wash the carpet in the river or in the yard. Even the perfect anti-odor product is no match for washing. Additionally, it will provide comprehensive carpet cleaning.
Why does a cat ignore its litter box and how to get rid of the smell of cat urine in the house?
A cat in the house brings joy. However, when a pet relieves itself in the wrong place, it becomes a real problem. In this regard, many people are interested in how to get rid of the smell of cat urine, because even if it is outdated, it produces a stench when the humidity in the room is high.
To deal with the problem once and for all, you should not only know how to eliminate an unpleasant odor and how to discourage your pet from a bad habit, but also understand the reasons why the cat suddenly began to ignore its litter box.
Folk remedies
The corrosive smell, popularly called “cat meat,” is a consequence of the successful composition of the pet’s urine, which contains a particularly smelling uric acid. Crystals of the substance do not dissolve in water, so washing the damaged surface even with a large amount of water will not lead to results. On the contrary, the liquid will wash the crystals far beyond the initial stain and the odors will intensify.
The consequences of a cat’s whim must be eliminated immediately, before urine is absorbed into the carpet, but even if this happens, it is possible to save the carpet before the stain dries. First, you need to limit the spread of liquid along the fibers, that is, urgently absorb the urine with a sponge or napkins. There is no need to rub the foul-smelling liquid even deeper - just blot it well.
If you can remove the carpet and wash it completely, this option is preferable, but this is done only after first cleaning the stain. Washing will get rid of more than just cat odor. Professional dry cleaners and workshops use powerful products that restore bright colors to the carpet and completely remove hair and parasites that live in dust.
But such radical measures are not available to everyone, so let’s consider other options for getting rid of unexpected joy.
Vodka
You need to generously moisten a rag or sponge with vodka and vigorously rub the alcohol-containing substance into the carpet. Before using vodka, first wipe a corner of the carpet with the substance to make sure that no traces of paint remain on the rag.
Potassium permanganate
An oxidizing agent that has a splitting effect on urine is dissolved in water with a weakly concentrated solution, then the stain and the space next to it are generously treated with the product. Potassium permanganate can only be used on dark carpet, as it tends to stain textiles.
Vinegar
The 9% substance is diluted with water in a ratio of 1:3. You can use a vinegar solution by soaking the stain with a sponge, but it is better to pour the product into a spray bottle and treat the floor well. After 15 minutes, the unabsorbed liquid must be blotted.
Lemon
You can’t remove the stain with store-bought lemon juice; the solution is to squeeze the juice out of the whole fruit. There is no need to strain the juice; it is better to immediately dilute it with 200 ml of cold water, then soak a sponge in the mixture and clean the unpleasant stain with strong, rubbing movements. Then you need to generously moisten a cotton cloth in diluted lemon juice and cover the treated surface for several hours. The goal is achieved twofold - removing residual odor and preventing the cat from trying to choose this place for further use.
Baking soda + hydrogen peroxide
The method is suitable for immediate action, immediately after trouble is discovered. Half a pack of soda is poured onto the stain, quickly distributed over the entire wetted surface and filled with hydrogen peroxide. It will take no less than a bottle of peroxide, and this method is dangerous for washing carpets without first testing it on an inconspicuous area, but it cleans the problem area no worse than professional products.
Laundry soap
Laundry soap contains glycerin, which is good at breaking down the “aromatic” enzymes in cat urine. To wash a stain using this method, grate half a bar of soap, dilute it with a small amount of water (3/4 cup) and after dissolving the soap shavings, apply the concentrate to the problem area.
Wash the pulp no earlier than after 2 hours.
Iodine
25 drops of iodine are dissolved in ½ liter of lukewarm water and the surface of the carpet is disinfected with this liquid. The product helps well against odor, but can give a light-colored product an undesirable reddish tint that will be impossible to bleach.
Salt
Salt acts as an absorbent and will not cope with the cat’s mark in terms of eliminating odor. However, the concentrated saline solution literally “eats away” old cat urine stains.

But the most common reason for defecating in the wrong place is a poorly washed tray. Remember that cats are very clean animals, and at the same time their sense of smell is several times stronger than ours.
Also, a cat may shit in the wrong place due to incorrectly selected litter.
A thoroughly washed tray using detergents will in most cases relieve the owner from such problems, especially if the tray is cleaned daily.
2. New unknown smells or objects
Unfamiliar smells and objects (for example, a guest's shoes, children's sheets) are perceived by animals as an encroachment on their territory. Therefore, the pet reminds others that he is the boss in the house, and begins to urinate on foreign objects.
3. Stress, anxiety and other behavioral reasons
Some cats are very emotional, they have a hard time withstanding insults, prolonged absence of the owner, various physical punishments, and simply any changes. Such animals require a special approach, and it may be impossible to do without the participation of an animal psychologist. It will not be possible to establish a relationship with a cat right away; you need patience and time
It is very important not to go from one extreme to another - first show ardent love for your pet, and then hate the animal because of the smell of urine in the house. Cats value a stable and even attitude towards themselves most of all.
4. Health problems
Urinating in places not intended for this purpose may be a sign of illness in the animal, especially if the cat is of advanced age. If you notice that your cat often goes to the toilet, and also strives to do this in your presence, then you urgently need to show your pet to the veterinarian. At the veterinary clinic, you will definitely be asked to take urine tests of the animal, so before going to the clinic, you can immediately collect them.
5. Tags
Marking is not exactly urination. When an animal leaves marks, it does not create a whole puddle, but only sprays the area. The purpose of leaving marks is to attract individuals of the opposite sex during the “walking” period, as well as to consolidate one’s own position and demonstrate dominance. Marks are usually left by unsterilized females and uncastrated males. The marks contain a specific odorous secretion, which is why the smell from the marks is much stronger than the smell of urine.
How to prevent persistent odor
To avoid an unpleasant odor spreading throughout the apartment, it is necessary to remove your pet’s waste daily. Using a special metal or plastic spatula, scoop up all the feces and lumps of litter into the urine bag. If you carry out this procedure regularly, there will be no unpleasant odor in the apartment.
- Make sure to collect all waste from the tray;
- To prevent the spread of unpleasant odors, tie the bag tightly before throwing it in the trash;
- If you have several cats, it is recommended to carry out treatment more often or purchase a personal tray for each pet;
- After cleaning, wash your spatula and hands with soap;
- To avoid bacteria and germs when cleaning the litter box, you can wear a disposable mask and gloves.
If the tray is very dirty, you should completely replace the filler. This procedure must be done 1-2 times a week to avoid the spread of germs and unpleasant odors:
- Take a bag and pour all the filling into it. Wash with a brush. Use mild household chemicals, such as soap and warm water.
- Fill with fresh filling;
- Some cats do not like the smell of damp litter, so it is recommended to dry the tray after washing;
- Avoid using strong chemicals like chlorine bleach when cleaning regularly. Some cats are attracted to its smell, like valerian, while others may refuse to go to the litter box with its smell;
- Some household chemicals, such as laundry detergents, litter cleaners, and disinfectant wipes, can be toxic to cats. Avoid using them when cleaning the litter box to prevent your pet from licking or inhaling the substance. When choosing a detergent, pay attention to warning phrases on the label, such as “Keep out of reach of children.”
- When changing the filler, you can sprinkle the bottom with baking soda - it absorbs the smell of urine.
- When cleaning daily, it will also be helpful to wipe down the area around it. This will help get rid of the unpleasant odor left by feces that fall outside the “toilet”.
The smell of cat urine on clothes and shoes: how to get rid of it?
People have many jokes about cats marking their owners' shoes and clothes, but these stories no longer seem so funny when you come across something like this in reality. But even in this case, everything is not so hopeless.
So, if your pet’s clothes are in the crosshairs, you shouldn’t be upset. You can get rid of the characteristic odor using a vinegar solution with a low concentration of the active substance.
To obtain the product, you need to dilute vinegar in water in a ratio of 2 tbsp. spoons of the substance per 2 liters of liquid, and soak the damaged item in the resulting solution and thoroughly wash it. After this, it is recommended to wash the clothes using regular powder.
As for shoes, the main thing here is not to delay actions, because the material quickly absorbs cat urine and in the future it is almost impossible to get rid of the smell.
Useful tips for cleaning shoes from cat urine and odors:
- Glycerin should be added to warm water, and the resulting solution should be used to thoroughly wash the shoes.
- In this case, fabric shoes must be washed several times.
- Shoes can be treated with iodine or potassium permanganate.
- When treating leather shoes, preference should be given to vinegar or lemon juice.
- It is necessary to avoid the use of chlorine-containing products, which can provoke allergic reactions in the future.
How to get rid of an unpleasant odor?
You should not scold your pet for the “inconvenience” caused. Caring for an animal in an apartment is a responsible undertaking. However, everything is not as difficult as it seems if you regularly follow certain rules.
1. New day - fresh filler
This is an obvious piece of advice, but many people neglect it due to laziness or saving money. Changing the filler daily will help avoid the accumulation of unpleasant odors and their spread. Set a cleaning schedule for yourself and clean the litter box regularly. If the cat has done its business in front of you, it is better to replace the litter immediately rather than wait for the aromas to spread throughout all the rooms.
2. General cleaning
You need to “generalize” not only in the apartment, but also in the cat’s litter box. On weekdays, the main thing is to clean the toilet at least once a day. A general cleaning won't hurt over the weekend. It is important not only to replace the filler, but also to remove all components of the tray and rinse thoroughly. The procedure will take no more than half an hour. Walk the soapy solution over all corners of the toilet, rinse, dry the tray, and after 5-10 minutes add new litter.
3. Additional funds
If regular cleaning isn't enough, try some extra tricks. For example, a scented filler, filter or substances to eliminate odors. It is important that the smell is not rich and pungent, otherwise the pet may abandon the tray altogether.

Choose one of the most popular remedies among the people!
- Enzymatic cleaner. Wipe the puddle dry and use an enzymatic cleaner. It contains biological enzymes that promote the rapid breakdown of proteins in cat urine and instantly eliminate odor. We are looking for a cleaner in a pet store. This product can even be used for clothes and linen if your pet suddenly “takes revenge” right on the bed or your favorite jeans. Note: if you have previously tried to use a different cleaner in the same place, the product may not work.
- White vinegar. Prepare a vinegar solution. To do this, always mix water with white vinegar in equal proportions. We remove the puddle with a rag and pour a little solution onto the “vengeance” site. Wipe thoroughly, or better yet, rub the solution directly into the stain. With the help of this product, the smell of ammonia in the urine is completely neutralized. Be sure to wipe the area dry. This product is recognized as the most effective of all existing ones - it even eliminates odors from old cat (and dog) puddles and marks.
- Bleach. About ordinary household cleaning agent (note - WITHOUT AMMONIA!), then - ordinary clean water. Afterwards, wipe the area dry, mix water and bleach in a ratio of 10 to 1 and pour the solution into a spray bottle. Spray the product onto the area damaged by the cat and after 30 seconds, wash off with a damp cloth. Note: products containing bleach can damage the color or structure of the material - be careful when choosing this cleaning option.
- Apple vinegar. Mix this product with washing powder (60 ml/60 g), apply to the stain, rub in, then carefully remove with a damp cloth. If after the stain has dried there is still an unpleasant odor, then add an enzymatic cleaner to this proportion.
- Soda. Sprinkle the “revenge” area with classic baking soda. This natural cleaner also perfectly absorbs all unpleasant odors. If the damaged area is not too noticeable, you can rub this product in with a brush or sponge, leave it for 2-3 hours, and then remove it with a vacuum cleaner and treat it with a regular floor or furniture product.
- Peroxide + Fairy + soda. We make this solution in the following proportion: dish soap - no more than 5 ml (1 tsp is enough), 3% hydrogen peroxide - half a glass. Pour the solution into a spray bottle and spray the product on top of the soda that has already been poured (and left for a couple of hours). Thoroughly rub the solution into the soda with a brush. After it has foamed, dry the stain, vacuum it and remove any cleaning residue with a regular cleaning product.
- Iodine. We make the product as follows: add 15 drops of aqueous iodine solution to 1 liter of water and treat the stain with the resulting solution. Leave for a short time and dry. The product copes well with uric acid crystals.
- Lemon juice. This product is easy to prepare: squeeze the juice from half a lemon, apply it to a sponge and treat the damaged areas of the upholstery.
- Potassium permanganate. A powerful oxidizing agent and an excellent deodorizing agent. We treat the stained area with a weak solution and wait for it to dry. We repeat the procedure until the smell completely disappears.
- For a fresh stain, use mouthwash. The scheme is the same: remove the puddle dry, apply the product to the sponge and treat the stain. Waiting for it to dry. Repeat if necessary.
Among the effective folk remedies you can also note vodka and drunken tea, Vanish stain remover and Lenore mouthwash.

Even if you stopped using plastic containers in favor of glassware, you probably still have a small supply of these kinds of bowls in your kitchen. The latter, by the way, are well suited for storing seasonings, office supplies, fasteners, growing flowers and seedlings.
If you have plastic containers that you still plan to use, here are some ideas on how you can clean them and get rid of the nasty smell.
Before trying the methods below, rinse the container thoroughly with hot water and detergent (except for the cold water method).
Newspaper
Regular newspaper will help get rid of the smell of food in the container. Take a sheet of newspaper, crumple it well and place it in a plastic bowl. Don't forget to close the lid tightly. The newspaper will absorb the unpleasant odor, and within a few hours the container will be as good as new. For best results, it is recommended to leave it overnight.
Coffee
Coffee will help get rid of the unpleasant odor in a plastic container. After all, by its nature it is an excellent absorbent and effectively draws out bad amber.
Coffee beans or ground coffee should be poured into a container and left closed for a day. You can also coat the bowl with coffee grounds and place it in the freezer overnight. The smell should go away.
Lemon
Rinse the plastic container with lemon juice or, more effectively, wipe it with lemon peel
Baking soda
Mix baking soda with a small amount of water. Use the resulting paste to thoroughly rub the inside walls of the container. Leave it for a day. Then rinse the bowl and wipe dry. Repeat the procedure if necessary.
Charcoal
Place a piece of charcoal in a container. Cover tightly and leave until the smell is absorbed.
Vinegar
Fill a container with warm water, add a quarter cup of vinegar and a couple drops of dish soap. Cover the bowl, shake, open and leave for several hours. Then rinse the container.
Vanillin
The technology is similar. Fill the container with hot water and add a pinch of vanilla. Shake and leave overnight. In the morning, all that remains is to rinse it and dry it.
Sun rays
Sun, air and water are our best friends. And indeed: the sun's rays can remove the unpleasant odor from the walls of a plastic container.
On a sunny day, place your bowls in fresh air. The sun will do all the dirty work for you.
"Night Baths"
Fill the container with hot water and add a couple of spoons of any detergent. Shake the container well and leave overnight. In the morning, rinse the container with running water. If the smell still remains, add warm water and baking soda and shake again. After this, the container should be as good as new.
Cold water
Before you wash the container in warm water and detergent, rinse it in cold water. This will prevent the unpleasant odor from sauce, eggs, and gravy from being absorbed into the walls of the plastic container.
Final recommendation: Do not use plastic containers until you lose your pulse. Each time the nasty smell will become more and more difficult to eliminate.
If you cannot completely stop using such containers, then change them more often. In addition, plastic containers are not that expensive.
An even better idea is to use glass containers for carrying and/or heating food. Don't skimp on your health!
Do you have any of your own life hacks for removing unpleasant odors from plastic food containers?
How to train a kitten to use a litter box
In the final part of the article, we will look at how to train a kitten to use a litter tray. The solution to the problem depends on a number of factors, the main one of which is considered to be the correct and competent training of the kitten to use the litter box. The main thing is not to go too far, otherwise your pet will start defecating anywhere.
If you decide to pair your pet with a litter box, follow the rules, which will make it easier to achieve your goal. Cats are freedom-loving and independent animals, but it is possible to convince them otherwise.
- If your pet leaves a wet and foul-smelling mark, remove it quickly, otherwise the spot will become fixed in your pet's brain as a point of evacuation.
- If your pet still uses the space behind the door or the rug for needs, rub the area with garlic, the smell of which cats hate.
- Keep an eye on the kitten at all times. As soon as it starts paving in the wrong place, move it to a tray.
- A tray with a double base or a product with filler is suitable for the role of a cat potty so that the animal masks the discharge.
- When potty training your pet, be patient, calm and consistent. If you poke your face into a puddle of urine, your pet will be offended, and in the future, out of spite, it will urinate in the most visible place.
Over time, you will wait until the moment when your pet becomes obedient and begins to use the tray. This will be a reason to open a bottle of wine and take a biscuit out of the refrigerator. But, even after celebrating the event, do not let your guard down. The pet may change his mind and set up a toilet behind the closet.
If this happens, have a conversation with him and shame him. Feeling guilty, the kitten will turn its face away and run away. If you punish an animal undeservedly, apologize. The cat will distinguish the intonation of the voice and forgive.

Try the advice in practice and you will find a devoted friend, if not a full-fledged member of a large family. Good luck!
Use of special means
Using folk methods to eliminate cat odors at home has its effect, but when they do not cope with the problem, you have to use special, professional means. Currently, many different compositions are offered, and you can always choose the best option, taking into account the place of processing, the amount of work and the desired aroma
It is important to choose a product that not only masks the odor, but fights its source, neutralizing active urinary components
Products from well-known manufacturers are of high quality: UrineOff, Just for cats Stain&Odor Remover, Pet Stain&Odor Remover, Odor Kill & Stain Remover, Complete Pet Stain&Odor Remover. There are some problems when cleaning leather products - in this case, it is better to carry out the treatment in several stages. Among Russian products, products such as “DezoSan”, Bio-G and “ZooSan” stand out. For carpet products, special compounds should be used: Pet Stain&Odor (Kirby home care company), Cleansan, “ZooVorsin”. When using any purchased products, you must strictly follow the recommendations of the instructions included with them.
A cat is a cute creature, a pet and a fairly clean animal. However, in a number of circumstances it can create problems in the form of urine odor. You should not rush to get rid of the animal; you need to look for the reasons for this behavior. An unpleasant odor in the house can be eliminated quite simply, and you can use both professional means and folk methods.
How to choose a litter box that won't stink?
Conventional plastic open trays are the biggest breeding grounds for unpleasant odors. The best option among inexpensive models would be closed products. They do not release the smell outside, and urine does not evaporate into the room so directly. In addition, it protects the owners from debris around the tray, since the cat, when he buries or digs his holes, cannot throw the litter onto the floor. Sometimes this is the only solution for animals that are too messy.
In the store you can choose such a tray of a traditional or corner shape; in addition, they come with or without a door. The first option is more effective from the point of view of retaining the “aroma”, but it can frighten an animal that is not used to doing its intimate affairs in such a cramped room. There are original models equipped with a carbon filter. Even more sophisticated trays have a built-in fan that blows air onto the filter, cleaning it. However, all such options are quite expensive and cumbersome, and therefore are not suitable for everyone.
New or old puddle? What to do?
Of great importance when choosing a method for removing cat urine from a carpet is how long ago the mark was made. Before using cleaning products, it is necessary to carry out preliminary preparation.
If there is still a puddle on the carpet, you will need:
- Blot it with paper napkins or pieces of toilet paper.
- Cover the wet area with many layers of paper.
- Press the paper on top with a flat, heavy object and leave for a few minutes.
- If the paper is noticeably wet, then the procedure must be repeated using new paper.
- Once the stain has completely dried, you can start thinking about how to get rid of cat smell from the carpet.
If the stain has already dried or is already old, then you need to determine its contours and do the following:
- Place a large piece of polyethylene under the stained area.
- Moisten the stain with warm water, but in a reasonable amount.
Removing cat urine odor
If you need to get rid of cat urine at home, you can use industrial products purchased in the household chemicals department:
Vanish - a detergent intended for carpeting, is a concentrate, it is diluted in a small amount of water. It will help get rid of stains and odors. You need to dilute Vanish in water to a thick foam, then gently rub it into the stain and sprinkle the area with baking soda so that it absorbs the smell. Carefully remove baking soda from the carpet with a vacuum cleaner. Everything should work out the first time, but if necessary, the procedure can be repeated. The pet store sells special preparations for cleaning the carpet and cat litter box: Urina Off, Zoovorsin, Zoosan, Dezosan
When purchasing, be sure to pay attention to the composition of the product: it must contain bacteria with enzymes. They clean the carpet and eliminate unpleasant consequences.
To enhance the effect, you can purchase a lamp with a black glow, and it will indicate dried and old puddles.
Traditional methods
In every home there are materials at hand that will help eliminate the smell of cat urine. For example, aromas of tea tree, citrus fruits, coffee and coconut. These aromas will help disguise the cat's prank, and you can remove the stain using strong oxidizing agents: iodine, lemon juice, potassium permanganate, hydrogen peroxide and vinegar.
It is not recommended to remove cat urine with bleach, because the product is toxic and can harm your pet. In addition, the smell of bleach lures the cat, and it will definitely return to repeat its work. Here are some recipes to get rid of the smell of cat urine:
- Dry mustard. In a bowl, dilute the dry powder with water until it becomes like a thick paste. Apply this product to the stain and leave until it dries completely. Then you need to use a wet rag to collect all the mixture from the carpet. After this, clean this place with a dry cloth, and collect the remaining mustard with a vacuum cleaner.
- Vinegar - removes any odor. Treat the stain on the carpet with soapy water, dilute table vinegar with water in a ratio of 1:3 and pour this solution over the stain. In the first hours the aroma will be persistent, but it will fade over time and the smell of urine will disappear.
- Vinegar, baking soda and hydrogen peroxide. First, it is better to conduct a test on the back of the carpet, otherwise, along with the smell, you can remove the paint from the pile. Pour vinegar onto the stain and wait for it to dry a little. Sprinkle baking soda on top. Then you need to prepare a solution from water, any dishwashing detergent and peroxide. Pour this product into a container with a spray bottle and sprinkle it over the soda. When everything is dry, clean this place with a vacuum cleaner.
- Potassium permanganate. This method is intended for dark carpets. A teaspoon of manganese is diluted in three liters of water. First, you need to clean the stain on the carpet with a rag soaked in the solution. After this, place the napkin on the carpet and let it lie there for a while.

After any cleaning, it is recommended to treat the area with lemon juice and a drop of tea tree oil. The cat will no longer want to urinate in this place.
Detergents
Cat urine can be washed off using available products that have a bactericidal effect. These include:
- vodka;
- iodine;
- detergent;
- lemon;
- baking soda and vinegar;
- potassium permanganate;
- special industrial products;
- bleach;
- tea leaves
Cat urine odors can be quickly and reliably removed even from upholstered furniture. It does not take a lot of time:
- Lemon. Squeeze the juice out of it, soak a sponge in it and thoroughly wipe the desired area. Cats hate the smell of citrus.
- Dilute potassium permanganate so that it has a light pink tint, blot a rag in it, and use it to place the puddle on the carpet and wait for it to dry.
- Vinegar. Wipe the cat's crime scene with it, and the smell of urine will quickly disappear along with the vinegar.
How to disinfect a cat's litter box
It is necessary to disinfect the cat's litter box every 2-3 weeks. This can be done using a light bleach solution. Before disinfection, pour the filler from the tray into the bag. Dilute half a glass of bleach in four liters of water. Dip a sponge into the resulting solution and scrub the bottom and sides of the tray. Also wash the outside of the tray and the place where it usually stands - filler and waste can also get there. Rinse thoroughly with water. Dry and fill with fresh filler.
Some cats may avoid the smell of white. In this case, you can use a solution of potassium permanganate - a universal, odorless antiseptic. 3-4 crystals of the substance are enough per liter of water. You can also treat it with ordinary laundry soap.
