How to clean a sheepskin coat
Begin any cleaning by studying the tags on the product: they indicate which effects are not contraindicated. Knowing what material the item is made of will prevent you from making irreparable mistakes. A few preliminary recommendations:
- Sheepskin coats of any kind cannot withstand washing: the leather and fur will deteriorate.
- Before cleaning, vacuum the product or brush it with a soft brush.
- When planning to use a cleaning agent, check its effect on the inside of the item.
- Change cleaning materials frequently.
- Scrub stains from the edges to the center so as not to increase the contamination.
- Treat the stain as soon as it appears.
Leather sheepskin coats are cleaned dry and wet. Here are some effective folk remedies:
Starch
An indispensable substance for cleaning anything. Leather, natural sheepskin coats too. Apply starch to the sheepskin coat, rub it a little, shake it off. Useful for cleaning even dark leather.
Semolina
The stains will disappear if you sprinkle them with semolina and rub lightly. Cereals tend to absorb fat and dirt. After a while, simply shake off the dirty grains.
Ammonia
Useful for refreshing soiled sheepskin coats, especially worn-out areas: collar, shoulders, pockets.
Bread crusts
A time-tested method, when dirt on a sheepskin coat, natural and artificial, is rubbed with a crust of dried black bread. After exposure, you need to sweep away the remaining crumbs with a brush.
Rubber soaked in gasoline
First you need to prepare a rubber block by leaving it in purified gasoline or kerosene for 10-12 hours. Rub the stain with the soaked “tool” without much zeal. However, you can omit the rubber from the recipe and use a piece of burlap. After work, ventilate the room and the item itself.
Soap with glycerin
To remove greasy stains, prepare the following composition:
- 50 grams of soap,
- half a tablespoon of glycerin,
- 250 ml warm water,
- half a tablespoon of ammonia.
After rubbing the soap, dilute it with water, add glycerin and alcohol. Soak a sponge in the prepared solution and lightly rub into the stain. Rinse the sponge frequently. You can replace soap with shampoo. Finishing treatment - wiping the product with diluted ammonia.
Do not neglect a simple but effective way of putting a sheepskin coat in order - knocking it out. This must be done carefully, but forcefully.
What needs to be done right away?
Any fresh stain is much easier to completely remove than old marks. The first thing to do if fat gets on a sheepskin coat is to blot the mark with a napkin and sprinkle with plenty of salt. Upon returning home, immediately begin removing the oily mark before it is absorbed deeply into the suede and becomes difficult to remove.
When removing a stain using any of the selected means, movements should be directed from its edges to the center. If you rub the fat in different directions, the contamination will only spread over an even larger area.
After treatment, the suede must be fluffed to disguise the cleaned area. To make the pile fluffy, purchase a special brush for cleaning natural suede. You will need it for caring for your sheepskin coat.
Cleaning a suede sheepskin coat
We are talking about high-quality material made from sheep or deer skin. Suede “breathes”, but thanks to special processing it does not allow moisture to pass through.
Unlike leather sheepskin coats, it requires more careful “operation” and constant care. The owner of a suede sheepskin coat should have several stain removers on hand. This:
- talc,
- soap,
- refined gasoline,
- ammonia.
You will also need:
- suede brush,
- office eraser,
- fine-grained sandpaper,
- special protective spray.
Talc
Use talc to remove grease stains. Leave it on the dirt for several hours. Then sweep away along with the absorbed fat.
Salt
Fine table salt will also help.
Proceed as follows: add salt to the dirt, rub lightly, shake off the residue, and brush over the cleaned area. By the way, semolina will also work.
Petrol
Gasoline is not contraindicated for cleaning suede products. Soak a cloth in it and wipe the stain. Then wipe this area with a slightly damp cloth. Gasoline will be able to remove not only fat, but also glue from the surface of a sheepskin coat without a trace. If the bead of glue is firmly dry, use paint remover.
Soap solution
Clean dusty suede with soapy water. A few drops of ammonia will enhance its effect. 5% ammonia in undiluted form will cope with stains without adding soap.
Oxalic acid
When a product requires more careful processing, use oxalic acid. Pour 1 tsp into a glass of water. acid and add a pinch of soda. Soak a cloth in the solution, be sure to wring it out and wipe off the stain. After this, dry the area with a dry, clean cloth and comb with a brush.
Remember that suede is a delicate material. Take a rubber brush, an eraser, and fine-grain sandpaper for work. When purchasing an expensive suede sheepskin coat, do not forget about special means for treating suede. Spray the product after cleaning. The components included in the impregnation will prevent the adhesion of dirt and moisture penetration.
