Remember
- Determine the cause. Having identified the factors that influenced the problem, it is easier to deal with it.
- To prevent the appearance: do not smoke, keep an eye on pets, ventilate, do not wash large carpets!
- Use the correct ingredients. For natural wool products, purchase special products.
- Read the instructions. Before use, read the composition, description and purpose. Follow the recommended algorithm of actions.
I talked about the tools and methods that I used myself. Each of them “works” differently and helps create a pleasant home atmosphere. If you don’t know how to remove unpleasant smell from carpet, then use my proven methods.
Popular methods for removing odor from carpet
Carpeting with organic stains can ruin the atmosphere in your home. When used correctly, folk recipes can remove unpleasant-smelling stains:
Herbs, essential oils
Fragrant herbs and essential oils will help get rid of mustiness in case of high humidity in the room.
It is worth pre-ventilating the room, treating the carpet with a washing solution with the addition of rosemary extract and lavender oil. Dry thoroughly and re-ventilate through. There will be no trace of mustiness left.
Hydrogen peroxide and soda
One of the cleansing options is baking soda and hydrogen peroxide. They give a quality effect:
- Baking soda is used to clean up spilled drinks and food debris. Prepare the mixture by mixing water and baking soda until smooth. Apply the solution to the stain, wait until it dries, and vacuum.
- Hydrogen peroxide can be used to clean carpets made from natural materials. Synthetic carpet may fade; you need to test it on the underside. The stain is filled with peroxide, the area around is covered with paper napkins. Wipe with a brush and vacuum.
- To remove difficult stains, prepare a solution of baking soda, hydrogen peroxide, and dishwashing detergent. Mix the ingredients, 1 tsp each, and apply to the contaminated area. Rinse in running water and dry in fresh air to help get rid of the odor.
Other means
Table vinegar – destroys the rotten smell. You can remove the smell of fish from a carpet by soaking the dirty area with 9% essence. Once the area is dry, lather with laundry soap and rinse. If the fishy aroma is preserved, repeat the procedure.
Remove old stains of unwanted odor using a chemical reaction of vinegar and soda.
Prepare vinegar essence (300 ml water and 100 ml vinegar). Soda is poured onto the stain, the solution is sprayed on top until active foam forms. It will dissolve dirt and eliminate odor. After several hours, remove the residue with a wet cloth, use a vacuum cleaner, and dry.
A solution of potassium permanganate copes with traces of food (milk, raw meat, beer, fish), which can become a source of bad aroma after drying. After the products get on the carpet, rinse with water and pour in diluted potassium permanganate. After drying, rinse again with water and dry. The method can be used to clean the fabric surface of furniture.
Traditional ways to remove stains from carpet
The main advantage of traditional methods is that all the necessary cleaning products are already at hand. There is no need to rush to the store and buy some untested household chemicals, whose environmental friendliness is also in doubt.
Simple substances such as baking soda, ammonia, hydrogen peroxide, lemon juice, sauerkraut or tea leaves will help remove stains from the carpet.
How to remove stains from carpet with baking soda
Baking soda is suitable for removing fresh, fresh liquid stains. The main advantage of this product is that it not only removes dirt, but also neutralizes unpleasant odors.
Apply baking soda evenly to the still wet stain, preferably in a fairly thick layer;
Leave for half an hour;
Remove the baking soda with a vacuum cleaner.
The method is not suitable for stubborn and old dirt. Even if you get them wet. Then the soda will only be absorbed into the pile and will be ineffective.
An alternative to soda is starch or salt.
We use ammonia
Ammonia is suitable for stubborn, “old” stains. It penetrates deeply into the texture of the material and easily removes dirt. However, it is advisable to use ammonia only on light-colored carpets, since it can discolor dark shades.
Prepare yourself mentally for the pungent, unpleasant smell of ammonia;
Mix half a liter of water, a teaspoon of washing powder and 10 ml of ammonia;
Thoroughly wipe the dirt with this mixture using a soft bristle brush;
Wipe the cleaned area with a dry napkin or cloth.
The carpet should then dry on its own. Depending on the temperature in the house, this may take up to several hours. You shouldn’t “rush the process,” because during drying, ammonia will continue to remove contaminants, especially those already ingrained into the pile.
After drying, ventilate the room. The smell of ammonia will disappear.
Hydrogen peroxide
This method is also suitable for removing stubborn, “old” stains. It can be used to clean both dark and light floor coverings, since the chemicals used are not too “aggressive” to dyes.
The only “but” is that you will need a lot of hydrogen peroxide.
Stir 2 tablespoons of baking soda in 0.5 cups of hydrogen peroxide until completely dissolved;
Pour the mixture into a spray bottle and spray it onto the contaminated area;
Leave for a few minutes and remove using a dry microfiber cloth.
If after drying the stain has lightened, but remains, being too ingrained, then the operation can be repeated.
Lemon juice
Lemon juice will also help get rid of stubborn “old” stains - and also neutralizes unpleasant odors. However, cleaning will take time. In addition, some dyes - especially for cheap “tracks” and “carpets” - can become lighter, so it is better to first “conduct an experiment” on some small, invisible area of the coating.
Squeeze the juice from 1-2 lemons depending on the size of the stain;
Apply it with a spray bottle, cotton ball or napkin to the contaminated area;
Leave for 1.5-2 hours;
Remove remaining juice and dirt with a sponge soaked in warm water;
Blot any remaining moisture with a dry cloth or towel.
Then leave the cleaned area to dry. After cleaning, you can ventilate the room to get rid of the lemon smell - if you want, of course.
Remove stains with sauerkraut
Sauerkraut will help not only remove even deeply ingrained dirt, but also simply refresh its color and also get rid of unpleasant odors. However, not just any “snack” is suitable for this operation. Requires sauerkraut prepared without vinegar.
Squeeze the cabbage, discarding the brine;
Rinse the cabbage under running water to get rid of its characteristic unpleasant odor;
Place the “snack” on the damaged area of the floor covering and rub it with a brush;
As soon as the cabbage turns gray with dirt, rinse it under running water and repeat the cleaning.
This must be repeated until the contamination is completely removed. Then the remaining cabbage is removed using a broom or vacuum cleaner.
Cleaning the carpet with tea leaves
Tea leaves are also suitable for removing stains, but only from dark carpets, since it itself has minor coloring properties. So it is better not to use it on light-colored surfaces.
Squeeze out the tea leaves used after drinking tea to rid it of excess liquid and coloring infusion;
Distribute it over the surface of the dirt and leave for half an hour;
Remove the tea leaves with a broom or vacuum cleaner.
Tea brewing also refreshes the color of the pattern on the pile, so you can use it simply for “general cleaning.” The only question is where to get so much tea for a large coverage area...
Causes of bad odors
Thick pile delays the evaporation of moisture, making cleaning the product much more difficult. Dirt penetrates deep into the soft surface. An unpleasant odor appears if any liquid has been spilled, and fungus forms in stains that do not dry completely. A washing vacuum cleaner will help clean contaminated areas, but the problem of bad odor will remain. The situation is aggravated by irregular ventilation of the room. Factors causing unpleasant odors:
- dampness in the room;
- pet urine;
- tobacco smoke;
- spots of various origins.
New carpet may have an industrial smell. Over time, it will disappear on its own, but if the sense of smell cannot stand it, you can use certain methods of processing the pile. Do not use scented products in the form of deodorants, perfumes or essential oils. They will not be able to eliminate the problem; on the contrary, they will only make it worse.
Popular ways to eliminate unpleasant odors
Various folk remedies are known to combat the odors of vomit, mustiness, mold, urine, beer, fish, and tobacco smoke emanating from the carpet. There are also effective methods for eliminating persistent synthetic odors from new carpet.
Vomiting
To eliminate the smell of vomit from a carpet, it is recommended to use a soda solution . It is enough to add two large spoons of soda to 1.5 liters of warm water.
Rub the resulting solution into the carpet with a sponge and leave for several hours. After drying, you need to vacuum the rug.
mustiness
Both baking soda and solutions based on hydrogen peroxide and vinegar will help get rid of the musty smell.
It is recommended to do the following:
Sprinkle baking soda over the entire carpet and leave it overnight.- Vacuum the carpet in the morning.
- Mix 1/3 cup of white vinegar with one large spoon of hydrogen peroxide and 1/3 cup of grated laundry soap.
- Pour the mixture into a plastic bottle and add warm water to it.
- Using a sprayer, spray the entire carpet.
- Allow the product to dry thoroughly. Then vacuum it.
Vinegar will be necessary with this method if mold has also formed on the carpet.
Dampness and mold
Due to excess moisture, the rug begins to smell damp. Subsequently, mold appears on it.
To combat mold and fungi, it is recommended to use the following products:
It is enough to treat the moldy areas with a spray and then wipe them with a damp sponge.
Reasons for the appearance of an unpleasant “aroma”
The first and most important prerequisite for the occurrence of stench is that carpet products have pile and can absorb and retain various liquids inside the fabrics for a long period of time. Humidity, stale air, etc. also contribute to stagnation. All unwanted odors in the home that can be emitted by carpet, including carpet, are divided into the following types:
- The smell of a new product.
- Stench caused by constant humidity in an apartment or house.
- Stale odors of urine, or, as they are also called, ammonia.
- All kinds of unpleasant odors of chemical or organic origin.
- Tobacco smoke.
Features of removing odors from different materials
The specifics of stain removal are influenced not only by the nature of the stain, but also by the fabric on which it is located. If you do not take this into account during the cleaning process, big problems will arise with removal.
Cannot be used:
- bleaches;
- stain removers.
Silk
Silk products are extremely sensitive; when cleaning them, it is not recommended to use:
- brushes;
- vacuum cleaner;
- products containing chlorine;
- steam generator;
- soap.
Take the item to the dry cleaner if it gets dirty.
Viscose
Viscose coverings can be carefully vacuumed and cleaned with foam no more than once a year. Not recommended:
- use products containing chlorine and alkali;
- use wet cleaning.
Cotton, linen
Products made from cotton and linen cannot be cleaned with home remedies and must be taken to a cleaning company for washing. Cleaning stains yourself will result in damage to the item.
Synthetics
Adhesive-based products do not tolerate machine washing and break down in the process. Suitable for similar products:
- dry cleaning;
- cleaning with special foam.
Knitwear
Another material that is sensitive to external irritants, which is recommended to be cleaned exclusively in cleaning centers.
Jute
It is recommended to remove stains on jute as quickly as possible, without waiting for it to dry. Allowed:
- vacuum the material;
- apply specially developed means to it.
Note! The material must be impregnated with special protective substances that prevent moisture from penetrating into the fabric structure
Fur
To remove dirt from fur coverings, a special solution is used, made from:
- water – 500 milliliters;
- salt – 3 teaspoons;
- ammonia – 1 teaspoon.
Handmade
Depends on the materials used in manufacturing and the cost of the product. It is recommended to take expensive items made from sensitive materials to the dry cleaner.
Carpet
Carpet is not particularly capricious and tolerates almost all processing methods. If possible, take the item to the dry cleaner.
Folk methods of struggle
You can eliminate the musty smell from carpet using three popular folk remedies:
- In the first case, you can use a soap solution.
- The second method involves the use of acetic acid and baking soda.
- The third recipe uses hydrogen peroxide as the basis.
Soap solution
This product for removing unpleasant odors from carpets is the most affordable and safest. The soap solution also successfully fights dirt.
It is recommended to use laundry soap. It does not contain fragrances or foreign chemicals.
To prepare a soap solution, you need to take 100 g of laundry soap (half a bar) and grate it on a coarse grater. Place the grated mass in a bowl with 2 liters of warm water. Wait until the soap is completely dissolved in water and the solution becomes opaque.
You need to take a hard rug brush and dip it in the resulting soap solution. It is recommended to clean carpet using soft, rubbing movements. After cleaning, the carpet should be thoroughly rinsed with clean water and dried in the open air.
Using baking soda and acetic acid
The combination of two components - soda and vinegar - promotes the release of carbon dioxide. Thanks to it, not only stubborn dirt is removed, but also the stench from the carpet is eliminated. To prepare the product, you need a bowl of warm water, an acetic acid solution, baking soda and any empty spray bottle.
The solution is made according to the following scheme:
- 2 liters of warm water are poured into a deep basin.
- Add 1 large spoon of soda.
- Add 2 large spoons of acetic acid.
- The resulting mixture is stirred and infused a little.
- The solution is poured into a plastic bottle. A sprayer is screwed onto it on top.
The solution is sprayed along the entire perimeter of the carpet. You need to wait a few minutes. Take a bowl of clean water and a soft sponge. Treat the carpet with it. After treatment, dry the carpet in the open air.
Do not use acetic acid on silk or wool carpets. An aggressive solution may damage the product. It is also not recommended to treat rugs with hot water.
How to clean with hydrogen peroxide?
It is recommended to combine this product with baking soda. Hydrogen peroxide not only neutralizes the stench emitted by the carpet, but also acts as a good stain remover. To prepare the product you will need hydrogen peroxide (3 percent solution), baking soda and warm water.
Spray the entire carpet with the solution and leave for 15 minutes. Wipe the carpet with a damp sponge and dry it in the open air.
Only white and light-colored carpets can be treated with a solution based on hydrogen peroxide. This product is not suitable for dark-colored products.
Elimination of odors
Separately, you should pay attention to ventilation. This important factor in a comfortable microclimate also protects the carpet from excessive absorption of odors.
The room should be ventilated as often as possible.
Chemical smell
You can get rid of the aroma of compounds that were used to treat the carpet in storage using various methods:
- Through intensive ventilation or drying in the open air;
- By washing with a weak solution of not too aggressive detergents (shampoo, liquid soap);
- By rinsing with an even weaker solution of vinegar.
The smell of new carpet
It's easier to prevent a problem than to get rid of carpet odor
Pay attention to the condition of the product when choosing it. Particular attention should be paid to paths made of synthetic materials.
Even if the carpet contains only natural fibers, the carpet should still be unrolled and checked for damage or foreign odors. After all, we don’t know in what conditions it was stored.
A specialized carpet cleaning product will help get rid of the factory smell. There are various modifications of such products, designed for different pile materials.
If there is no desire or opportunity to use purchased products, the carpet can be sprinkled with a small layer of ordinary dry soda. In a couple of hours it will absorb the unpleasant odor, after which the soda must be carefully swept away or collected with a vacuum cleaner.
Eliminating the musty smell of mold with vinegar and soda
First of all, the carpet must be dried. This should be done either outside or using forced air (fan, air conditioner, strong draft). The only thing that is not recommended for drying is heating devices. Heat can damage the fibers.
To get rid of mold odor, you need to remove the mold itself. This can be done not only with specialized means, but also with a regular solution of vinegar or soda.
- Take a regular basin (about 5 liters);
- Fill it with water at room temperature;
- Add 5 tablespoons of vinegar solution (9%) or soda;
- Stir thoroughly;
- Using a sponge or brush (depending on the type of carpet), wipe the product;
- Dry thoroughly again.
The carpet can also be treated with a weak solution of potassium permanganate. But, it should be borne in mind that an incorrectly prepared solution (with a large amount of potassium permanganate) can stain the fibers.
Quartzing with an ultraviolet lamp will also help to completely get rid of mold. This treatment will destroy microorganisms, that is, the original source of the smell.
How to get rid of the smell of tobacco?
If a soda solution does not help remove the unpleasant odor from the carpet, then special means are needed. There are compositions that take into account not only the type of pile, but also the main source of odor. Among them, anti-tobacco products are quite popular.
Given the persistence of tobacco stench, it is permissible to use strong agents such as hydrogen peroxide. It should be used carefully, as peroxide has a whitening effect.
In particularly advanced cases, it is recommended to contact a carpet cleaning company.
Of course, all this makes sense only if there is no longer smoking in this room.
Pets
If your pet has slightly damaged a fleecy product, there are different ways to remove the smell from the carpet. Due to the complex chemical composition of animal waste products, specialized cleaning remains the best option. However, it is expensive.
Cheaper, but almost as effective, the ammonia smell can be eliminated using stain removers and other household chemicals. To reliably get rid of odor, you must strictly follow the instructions for use of the product.
First of all, it is necessary to promptly eliminate direct contamination. If it is hard, then the easiest way is to use a vacuum cleaner.
The previously discussed methods of treating with vinegar, soda or potassium permanganate will help little here. But a hydrogen peroxide solution works better. The same methods will help remove the smell of fish from the carpet if you accidentally drop it.

How to remove stains from carpet from specific contaminants
Many pollutants, such as acid, wine, blood, oil, chocolate, coffee and urine, leave traces that are difficult to remove. You need to get rid of them using special methods.
Removing acid-containing stains
Acidic liquids such as vinegar, some fruit juices, and salad dressings can discolor the lint pattern. Therefore, they must be removed immediately.
Dissolve 1-2 teaspoons of soda in a glass of warm water;
Apply to stains. If it starts to “hiss” and become covered with foam, then remove it using a napkin;
Mix 20 ml of ammonia and a glass of warm water, and apply the solution to the newly cleaned area;
Wipe the wet mark, and then remove the remaining liquid with a dry cloth;
Rinse the cleaned area with cold water.
You can then leave the cleaned area to dry.
Instructions for cleaning wine stains
Almost a “homeopathic method”, based on the principle “like cures like.” But it only works if red wine has been spilled. To remove white stains, you can use any of the above methods.
Apply white wine to spilled red wine;
Rinse the damaged area with cold water. You can simply pour liquid over it and immediately remove it with a sponge or napkin;
Apply salt to the wet area in a thick layer and leave it for 10 minutes;
Remove salt that has absorbed liquid with a vacuum cleaner or broom.
But traces and dirt from other alcoholic drinks can be easily removed using one of the above methods.
Recommendations for removing blood stains
Blood is one of the most difficult pollutants to remove. Therefore, traces of it need to be removed in several ways at once.
“Mild” cleaning products such as those used for washing dishes;
Carpet cleaner.
If the blood has not yet dried, blot it with a napkin or sponge to remove excess;
Mix 1 liter of warm water, 1 teaspoon of wine vinegar and the same amount of mild detergent;
Apply the solution to the “traces of bloodshed” and leave in this state for 15-30 minutes, depending on how “old” the contamination is;
Use a carpet cleaner.
Different carpet cleaners require different methods of use. Use the instructions for the one you have.
Recommendations for cleaning carpet from ketchup
Spilled or splashed ketchup must be immediately removed from the surface of the pile. This sauce often contains vinegar, due to which old dirt is quickly “absorbed” into the texture of the material and becomes extremely difficult to remove.
Mix 2 cups water and 1 cup vinegar;
Soak a sponge in this solution, squeeze it out and collect the ketchup;
Then use the same sponge to suck up any remaining dirt until your flooring is completely clean;
Rinse the area to be cleaned with water.
There is no need to dry the carpet - it will dry itself. But if you need to quickly get rid of moisture, you can place a fan next to the “puddle”. You cannot use a hairdryer, as high temperatures can damage the texture of both the pile and its woven base.
Removing chocolate stains
Chocolate quickly eats into the pile, but can be easily removed from it using conventional carpet cleaning products. But if there are no such household chemicals in the house, but there is wine vinegar, then you can use it.
A “mild” detergent – such as one intended for dishes.
Remove excess chocolate using a not very sharp knife;
Mix 1 liter of warm water, 1 teaspoon of wine vinegar and 1 teaspoon of detergent;
Apply the solution to the chocolate mark and rinse the stained area thoroughly.
After drying, you will also need to vacuum the carpet.
Removing coffee stains
Coffee has noticeable coloring properties, so spilled drink must be removed immediately - before the “puddle” dries completely.
“Mild” detergent (chemicals for washing dishes are suitable);
Carpet cleaner.
Blot the “puddle” with a sponge or napkin to remove excess coffee spills;
Mix 1 liter of warm water, 1 teaspoon of wine vinegar and 1 teaspoon of detergent;
Apply the resulting mixture to the stain and leave for 20-30 minutes;
Clean the carpet with a special cleaner.
Different carpet cleaners require different methods of use. Use the instructions for the one you have.
Eliminating rubber odor
The simplest and most widely used remedy for getting rid of the rubber stench in a room is an air freshener. Choose a suitable scent (citrus or lavender is ideal) and spray it in the room. But keep in mind that the air freshener will only weaken the unpleasant odor and mask it.
The most effective way to get rid of rubber smell is the Odorgone air freshener. This brand also offers cleaning products, shoe freshening, and pet odor removal.
Fresh air
The first way to remove the smell of rubber is to ventilate (be it a room, clothes, shoes, toys...). Fresh air will not be able to eliminate a very persistent odor, but with a slight rubbery smell it will provide freshness to things.
Sun
The next way to get rid of the smell of rubber on various things is exposure to sunlight. The sun will help eliminate “rubber notes” from toys, rugs, slippers, dishes, and other products. Avoid excessive overheating to avoid damaging things.
Vinegar
This is a great way to remove rubber odor from clothes. Before cleaning, check the material's resistance to acidic agents. It's easy to do. Turn the clothes inside out and apply vinegar to a small area. If no reaction occurs within 10 minutes, continue cleaning.
- Prepare a suitable container (it should accommodate all the items being cleaned).
- Pour about 3 liters of water into a container, add 250 ml of vinegar.
- Stir.
- Immerse clothing in the resulting solution. All things should be under water (if necessary, place a jar on top of the wet clothes - it will prevent floating).
- Leave to soak overnight.
- Wash your things in the morning. When washing in a machine, use the maximum temperature allowed for a particular item (this is indicated on the label).
- After washing, you can use fabric softener.
Vinegar is suitable for removing rubber stench from washing machines and other products.
Peppermint oil
If you notice a smell coming from new products, get rid of it as soon as possible. Otherwise, it will be absorbed by the surrounding things. One good way to do this is by using peppermint essential oil. Add a few drops to water and wipe the product. Dry.
Another option suitable for cleaning toys and other products without glued parts. Pour warm water over dried mint and lemon balm, add a few drops of any essential oil. Place the items to be cleaned into the infusion and leave overnight. In the morning, wipe and dry.
Potassium permanganate, peroxide
Many users confirm the effectiveness of a solution of potassium permanganate or hydrogen peroxide in removing rubber odor from various surfaces. But both substances are suitable for different items:
- peroxide is recommended for light-colored surfaces and fabrics;
- potassium permanganate is suitable for dyed things.
Dampen a cloth in one of the products (if using potassium permanganate, prepare a pink solution), wipe the product thoroughly. If necessary, repeat the procedure several times. The smell, if it does not go away completely, will become less expressive.
Alcohol
This is a commonly used method to eliminate rubber stench. It is also suitable for plastic products. Alcohol is suitable for cleaning new shoes, toys, washing machine seals that smell like rubber, etc.
Expert opinion Natalya Osadchaya
Do not clean leather items such as bags with alcohol. This will cause the skin to dry out.
Dampen a cloth or cotton pad with alcohol. Wipe problem areas of the product. After the first use, the smell will most likely not go away. Therefore, repeat the cleaning procedure periodically (over the course of a week).
Special deodorants
A good modern way to remove the rubber stink is the use of deodorants sold in drogerie stores. As an alternative, long-lasting perfume is suitable. The method is suitable for all products, incl. for bags, clothes.
Activated carbon
Another product that can remove the unwanted “aroma” of new products is activated carbon. It should be used (in powder or tablet form) for a long time, ideally for several days. Therefore, activated carbon is suitable for refreshing things in which it can remain during this time (bags, shoes).
Place the tablets or powder inside (eg in pockets) of the item. After a few days, take it out, shake it out or vacuum it.
Flour and soda
This is a somewhat unusual way to remove rubber “odor” from smelly shoes. Mix soda and flour. Pour the mixture into fabric bags, which you place in your shoes. Leave for 1-2 days.
What are the smells on the carpet?
In general, “flavors” can be divided into three groups:
- The smell of a recently purchased carpet or rug.
- The smell remaining after something has been dropped or spilled on the carpet or from a persistently smelling object in the room.
- Residual odor after improper cleaning or dry cleaning.
Dirt should be removed as soon as possible after it appears so as not to spoil the appearance of the carpet.
In the second group, the most persistent and unpleasant odors are beer, vomit, fish, burnt milk, human and animal urine, and tobacco smoke. Due to improper cleaning or simply unfavorable conditions in the room, the carpet may become saturated with the smell of mold, dampness, and mustiness.
It is worth noting that methods of getting rid of chemical and organic odors vary. All products described below are designed for use on regular carpet made of synthetic and semi-synthetic material.
Removing odors of inorganic origin
The types of carpet stains and odors vary and require different cleaning methods.
The smell of new carpet
A recently purchased carpet has an unpleasant odor due to various chemical impregnations that are designed to improve its consumer qualities. So, they should prevent allergies, electrification, etc. The base of the carpet in the form of latex, rubber or special glue also smells specifically and not very pleasant, especially if they are of poor quality.
Usually the smell disappears within seven days after purchase, provided that the room is ventilated for at least two hours daily. Until the smell disappears, it is advisable to stay less in the room where the carpet is.
Damp smell
As a result of using carpets in rooms with high humidity or improper wet cleaning, the product may develop an unpleasant odor, which is quite possible to get rid of. For this purpose, you should take the carpet to the balcony or outside in sunny and dry weather and hang it on a rope or crossbar. It takes at least a day to completely dry the product and ventilate it.
Carpet cleaning smell
To get rid of dry cleaning smell, the carpet should be hung on the balcony and left for about a week. Ideally, you need to ventilate it outside in dry weather, bringing it into the house at night. As a last resort, ventilate the room where the carpet is located for as long as possible.
Smell of tobacco smoke on the carpet
The smell of smoked cigarettes is one of the most difficult to remove. If you have smoked in the room for more than one year, the amber is absorbed into all the coverings of the room. You can completely get rid of it only by making cosmetic repairs and pre-treating the walls and floor with an antiseptic. And the carpet will need to be thoroughly washed, treated with odor neutralizers, for example, Odorgon spray, dried and ventilated for several days. This can really be done at a car wash or in the courtyard of a private house. Of course, if moisture is not contraindicated for the product.
The smell from cigarettes is the most persistent and practically impossible to remove.
Organic scents
Stains of protein and other organic origin require a special approach, and both folk and industrial remedies can be used equally effectively.
Smell of mold and mustiness
Both of these smells indicate that there is fungus in the carpet. It is better to take the carpet to a dry cleaner, where they will carry out the appropriate treatment with antifungal drugs and impregnations, but if this is an expensive pleasure for you, you can try to solve the problem with improvised means.
Fungus on the carpet not only spoils its appearance, but also negatively affects your health.
Before getting rid of fungus, you should eliminate the causes of its appearance: dry the room using a split system or dehumidifier and ventilate the room more often. Next, you can begin to fight mold:
- Wear safety glasses, a disposable mask, and rubber gloves to protect against fungal spores.
- Take the carpet product outside or open the windows in the room, after closing the doors to other rooms.
- Use a stiff-bristled brush to scrub away the fungus from both the outside and inside of the carpet.
- Take an antifungal agent, for example, and, after carefully reading the instructions, apply it to the carpet from the outside and back. The substance must completely saturate the product.
- The floor and all surfaces in the room, as well as the brushes and rags used, should also be treated.
- After waiting the time specified in the instructions for the product, the carpet product is thoroughly washed on both sides and dried, making sure that no fungal stains remain.
- After treatment, the room should be ventilated for another 3-4 days.
How to clean carpet from mold smell: how to treat stains?
Before using any product, you should first prepare the product. So, in order to effectively clean the carpet from the smell of mold and dampness, you should:
- pre-dry the stain;
- walk carefully with a brush on both sides to remove as much fungus as possible;
- thoroughly vacuum the product, removing spores, dust and debris;
- treat the floor under the product and dry it well;
- eliminate the cause of mold formation so that there are no repeated lesions.
It is worth noting that removing fungal formations requires wearing a protective mask, gloves and goggles, while ensuring maximum ventilation of the room.
To completely cope with the problem of mold and dampness, the use of folk remedies is not always enough. Most often, only professional techniques and tools can cope with this problem. That is why qualified carpet cleaning in Moscow from a cleaning service is the safest and most effective method that allows you to quickly and efficiently get rid of mold. Specialists can restore the most complex and difficult to remove lesions, ensuring the carpet is soft, fresh and clean.

How to remove inorganic odor
- the aroma of a new thing;
- the smell of dampness;
- after dry cleaning;
- the stench of tobacco smoke.
Fresh purchase
Fresh purchases often smell not the most pleasant, which annoys its owners. To remove unnecessary odors, it is enough to ventilate the room in which the purchase is located for a week. After the specified period, the unpleasant aroma will disappear on its own.
Dampness
When storing things in rooms with high humidity, they begin to mold, emitting an unpleasant aroma. You can get rid of the source of the problem as follows:
- choose a sunny, warm day and hang the rug outside;
- We leave it in the fresh air for 24 hours, after which the damp smell disappears.
After dry cleaning
If a product has recently been dry-cleaned and emits a strong chemical smell, hang it on the balcony for airing. Usually, a day of airing is enough to remove foreign chemicals from the fabric. At night the carpet can be brought indoors, and during the day it can be hung out to dry again.
Tobacco smoke
The pile absorbs tobacco smoke well, which is very difficult to get rid of in the future. In families where there are smokers, it is recommended not to abuse tobacco products in rooms with carpets. It is not always possible to completely eliminate the consequences of cigarettes, and in some cases the only thing left to do is throw it away. If such a problem arises, it is advisable to take the item to the dry cleaner and not deal with it yourself.
Smell of vomit
First, remove pieces of undigested food and rinse off the liquid part with water. Try to work the stain gently so that it does not spread across the carpet. Scrub the stained area with washing powder diluted in water using a stiff brush. Collect the soapy water either with a vacuum cleaner, if available, or with a cloth. Wet the carpet with clean water and remove the water again. Repeat this procedure to completely remove the soap. Dry the carpet.
In this situation, you can treat the carpet with an odor control agent, such as Odorgone. Or take any other similar product, including those sold in pet stores. The principle of operation of these products is based on the dissolution of odor-causing proteins by enzymes.
Remove the main dirt from the carpet first. Then saturate the smelling stain with the product. Leave for several hours. Rinse and dry.
A vinegar solution also helps to remove this smell. Dilute vinegar with two parts water. Soak a sponge in the solution and wipe the stain. The main thing here is to treat the entire stained area. Let the vinegar soak into the fibers of the material for about two hours. Then rinse and remove all excess moisture. Dry the carpet.
