Wash and clean your tie correctly

A tie is an important component of a men's business suit. Let's talk about how to wash and iron a tie so that it always looks perfect. How else? After all, this is the purpose of a tie.

Oddly enough, ties are less dirty for those men who are used to wearing a tie all the time. A real gentleman does not drop ashes on his tie or pour borscht on his tie in the dining room. But if a man wears a tie rarely, on special occasions, then he sometimes has to wash the tie after each use.

Preparing to wash a men's tie

In order not to ruin a men's tie by washing, you need to prepare for washing. Preparing to wash a tie includes several steps:

  • you need to read the information on the tie label - the recommended washing modes are indicated there;
  • then determine what material the tie is made of and whether this material is machine washable;
  • Check on a small area of the tie to see if the fabric is fading.

If there is a small stain on your tie, you can try removing the stain without washing. Still, it is not recommended to wash ties frequently to preserve their appearance.

Silk men's ties cannot be washed in a washing machine. They are carefully washed by hand in cool water using special detergents for silk products.

If the tie is fading, you should wash the tie by hand in cool water, without soaking, and quickly. Such a tie made of fadeable fabric should be dried in a well-ventilated place, spread out, for example, on a terry towel.

Storing a men's accessory

A good owner has everything in its place in his wardrobe: shirts, sweaters, coats. But what is the right way to store ties in a closet? There are several methods:

  1. In a supine position. There are special cases or suitcases for this, or allocate space in a dresser drawer. This method is convenient because it is not difficult to search for products, especially when there are a lot of them.
  2. On a hanger. Most experts prefer this storage option. After the accessory has been worn, it needs a “rest”. It must be untied so that it does not wrinkle and lasts longer. To make it easier to find them, you can buy special hangers. Wool and cashmere ties should not be stored on hangers as they lose their shape.
  3. If you are going on a trip, you will not be able to keep the product unwrapped in your suitcase. Special covers are sold for this: rectangular or round.

Do you use a hanger to store ties?

Not really

How to wash a tie by hand

If the tie is very dirty, soak it in warm water with washing powder for 40 minutes. Then gently wash the tie by hand or with a soft brush. After washing, rinse the tie several times in clean water.

To maintain the brightness of the color, you can add a little salt to the powder in the washing water.

After washing and rinsing, the tie should not be wrung out or twisted. Shake the water off the tie and lay it on a terry towel to absorb excess water.

Is it possible to use a washing machine?

In this way, you can only wash accessories made of linen or cotton fabric. In this case, it is necessary to take measures in advance to minimize the likelihood of damage to fibers and deformation of the product:

  1. To do this, set the washing machine to delicate mode.
  2. A water softener is added to a special compartment. This reduces the impact on the fabric fibers and the tie is less deformed.
  3. Be sure to turn off the spin mode.
  4. The water temperature is set to 40 degrees or less so as not to spoil the color of the product.

This depends, first of all, on the composition of the fabric from which the accessory is made. It is better not to even try to wash items with the addition of silk, linen, or wool using this method. These types of fabrics are best washed by hand.

Why? Fabric containing natural fibers can easily lose its shape. In this case, the tie will not have an ideal appearance even after careful smoothing and steaming.

Items made of polyester or with the addition of synthetic fibers can be washed. But you need to set the machine to the “delicate” mode, without spinning, and use only liquid detergent for delicate fabrics. You can also use special mesh bags designed to prevent delicate fabrics from deteriorating during washing.

And yet, if the tie is made of synthetics, but there is a “not machine washable” sign on the label, it is better not to risk it and wash it yourself.

Removing stains from a men's tie

After festive events, traces of alcohol may remain on your tie. The most unpleasant and persistent ones come from red wine. You can try removing wine stains with salt:

  • Sprinkle fresh stain with salt;
  • wash the tie in soapy water.

When washing a men's tie, do not use chlorine-containing products. To remove stubborn lipstick or ink stains, you can use special non-chlorine stain removers.

How to dry a tie

Important! It is strictly forbidden to wring out the product, even if you wash it by hand!

Carry out drying in stages as follows:

  1. Place the tie on a thick terry towel and use gentle blotting movements to remove the water.
  2. Place a dry towel on a hard, flat surface and dry the product flat on it.
  3. A slightly damp tie can be carefully straightened, covered with another towel on top, then placed on it with any heavy object that fits the shape. Leave the accessory in this form until completely dry.

Dried this way, it will generally not need ironing.

Delicate items should not be dried near heating appliances - they may lose their shape. For the same reason, the drying process cannot be accelerated with a hot iron.

The washed item is not wrung out so as not to deform the fibers. The tie must be dried on a line, carefully leveled and allowed to drain naturally.

An alternative way of drying is to lay the product on a flat horizontal surface, first laying a terry towel on it, and gently blot it dry. Then the tie should be left straightened out to dry naturally.

How to iron a man's tie

If the tie is well straightened and dried after washing, you don’t need to iron it. But if it gets wrinkled, you can iron the tie through a layer of damp gauze or thin cotton cloth, or use a steamer.

When ironing, you need to set the iron to the minimum temperature and iron the tie in one direction.

If you wash your tie correctly, it will look dignified and elegant.

Ironing

It is not recommended to iron a tie, as this will cause it to lose its strict shape and fade. For this purpose, you can buy a portable steamer that is suitable for delicate items. It perfectly aligns the fabric without damaging it at all. But it is not always possible to use this device.

You can also iron a tie at home, but this only applies to extreme measures. There are a few rules to keep in mind:

  1. The item must be clean before ironing. Do not iron if there are stains, otherwise they will not wash off.
  2. Ironing should be done through a wet gauze cloth.
  3. Apply just a little pressure on the iron.

To make this piece of clothing look perfect, you need to iron the tie. Carefully study the label on the back of the product - it indicates at what temperature the item made of a particular material should be ironed. Do not overheat the iron or use steam, especially if the product is starched.

Proper care of your tie will allow you to maintain the product's impeccable appearance for a long time.

Even if you managed to avoid making mistakes when washing, the risk of this remains when ironing. Therefore, you need to take a particularly responsible approach to this process.

A high-quality iron will make it possible to reduce the risk of incidents during work.

Most modern models are equipped with a temperature regulator, which allows you to set the average or minimum degree of heating, which depends on the power of the built-in heating element.

Be sure to place damp gauze between the iron and the tie. To prevent seams on the back side from imprinting onto the front side, you can use a cardboard insert.

But you should not use the template that was made in the previous paragraph. Since plastic or tape can melt and solder when the temperature rises.

This process adds elegance, but if you are still afraid of using an iron, a steamer can come to your rescue. It allows you to quickly and efficiently get rid of wrinkles.

After drying, the question arises, how to iron ties at home? There is also nothing complicated in this procedure. After the first time, subsequent ironing will take place automatically, your hands will do what you need.

Every housewife should know how to iron a tie, because this accessory is always in sight. If the procedure is carried out without using an iron, then the product is simply rolled into a tube and left in this form for several hours.

This method is suitable if the accessory is not very wrinkled.

How to iron a tie?

Silk accessories can only be treated with steam at a distance of at least 10 cm from the product. Products made from other types of fabrics can be ironed when they are still damp, the main thing is to observe the temperature regime of the electrical appliance and carry out the manipulation through gauze.

How to fold to keep the accessory in perfect condition?

Ties made of natural silk and other delicate fabrics require special handling. They must be inspected for contamination before being stored. If there are any, they must be removed immediately.

Remember! In the future, it will be simply impossible to remove old stains from silk products without harming the fabric! The color of the product will inevitably change, and the structure of the fabric at the spot may be damaged.

The best storage method is special hangers. If there are none, then you can hang it on an ordinary hanger, but before that, untie it and carefully straighten it. Experienced housewives suggest this storage method: untie the knot, roll the product into a ring and store it in a cardboard or plastic box.

To give the accessory an ideal look after storage, treat it with a hand steamer.

If you take a tie with you on a trip, purchase a special box - a case for this purpose. The product will not wrinkle and will look fresh even after being stored in a suitcase.

  • do not wring out the tie when washing;
  • dry flat.
