Types of markers and methods for cleaning them
Determining the type of marker will help you quickly get rid of traces of it. Types of base for markers:
- oil,
- alcohol,
- water,
- chalk,
- paints and varnishes.
Oil, chalk and water markers are the easiest to clean. Regular soap, a solution of washing powder, or dishwashing gel will help. Rule for removing traces of marker on alcohol: use alcohol-containing products. This is acetone, vodka, shaving lotions. Paint markers can only be washed off with powerful solvents.
Before cleaning, you need to take into account the material on which the dirty mark remains. It is dangerous to use solvents on some surfaces: such substances help set marker stains and corrode the material. You should treat plastic and varnished kitchen surfaces with care.
It is better to avoid abrasive products and start with the least aggressive ones. On expensive furniture, it is recommended to carry out a test: apply the cleaning agent to an inconspicuous area and make sure that the coating does not react.
Types of markers
Felt pens are made using different technologies. The main mechanism of their operation is that the coloring liquid flows from the vessel along a soft porous material that protrudes beyond the felt-tip pen in the form of a small feather. It is important to understand that markers come in different bases, and this determines what substance can be used to remove the stain. Three types of markers are common:
- Water based.
- Alcohol based.
- Oil based.
Knowing what type of marker the one that was used to apply the unwanted stain on the furniture belongs to, you can quickly find a way to wipe off the applied coloring matter.
How to remove marks from hard surfaces
It will not be difficult to wash off traces of a felt-tip pen from such surfaces, since their structure does not allow the substance to penetrate deeply and take hold. The first product you should try for cleaning hard surfaces is alcohol.
How to proceed:
- Soak a piece of cloth or cotton pad in alcohol or an alcohol-containing product. For example, ethyl alcohol is replaced with strong alcohol.
- Rub the marker mark or briefly press the material against it.
- The stain will begin to dissolve and remain on the fabric or cotton wool.
- Before complete dissolution, sometimes you have to change the napkin for a new one.
Advice Do not actively rub or smear marks from an alcohol marker. Cover the area with a cotton pad soaked in cleaning product. If it is heavily soiled, you can lightly rub the item, but only within the area of the stain.
Products for metal - “White spirit” solvent: applied to a sponge, and the stained area is treated with it.
An easy way to remove marker marks from plastic is to treat them with toothpaste. Suitable uniform, white, without abrasive particles. How to remove permanent marker:
- Apply a small amount of paste to the stain.
- Leave for a few minutes to absorb.
- Moisten a soft sponge with water and rub gently.
Melamine sponge is designed for a wide range of stains. This type of household eraser will help remove marker marks. Just wet the mark with water and rub until it disappears completely.
A gentle method for varnished wood and plastic is a regular rubber band. The principle of operation is the same as with pencil marks: just rub until they disappear completely.
Ways to clean marker marks
The name “permanent marker” speaks for itself; removing even a small stroke is sometimes quite difficult. The problem is especially acute in families where there are little artists who manage to decorate everything except the sketchbook. The main task is to gently clean the surface without damaging it. Do not use dry powders; start with gentle products, and in the case of aggressive chemicals, use less concentrated ones first.
Attention! To find out how a certain surface reacts to a cleaner, test it on a small area in an inconspicuous place.
First, let's talk about the simplest situation when traces of a marker can be removed without any problems. The peculiarity of hard and durable, non-porous surfaces (glass, tiles, iron, kitchen countertops, natural stone, etc.) is that the ink does not have time to be deeply absorbed. Before it dries completely, the stain is erased very easily, practically no traces remain. If cleaning is not carried out immediately, light marks may remain. Here is a list of suitable means:
- alcohol and alcohol-containing liquids, as well as acetone. Apply the product to a napkin and remove the stain with gentle movements;
- mix baking soda and toothpaste in equal parts, apply to ink, leave for 5 minutes. Use a damp cloth to wash off the ink with a little effort. Complete removal may take about 20 minutes;
- WD-40 - put on rubber gloves, wet a sponge, wipe the stain;
- The melamine sponge does not act as quickly as we would like, but it works reliably. Lightly wet the washcloth, squeeze out the water and thoroughly wipe the problem area;
- a special felt-tip pen for removing stains is only effective on smooth surfaces. Run it along the unwanted stroke; if the ink does not disappear completely, wipe the area with dishwashing gel.
You can partially remove or disguise marker marks with a pencil grater. Remove eraser marks with a dish sponge. Many housewives say that you can wash off ink of various origins from hard surfaces with sunscreen. This method is possible, but it gives a weak result; to completely destroy the stain, the procedure will have to be carried out 2 or 3 times. Apply a little cream to the stain with a brush (do not smear), leave for a few minutes, wipe with a soft cloth.
How to remove marker from fabrics
The most effective, but also the most dangerous option is soaking in bleach or another bleach. If you overexpose the material, it will begin to deteriorate, the appearance of the item will deteriorate, and it will become short-lived. The method is only suitable for white fabrics with a dense structure. It is not advisable to use ordinary powders; options for removing felt-tip pen marks from clothing are selected based on the type of material:
- satin - prepare a mixture of milk, vinegar, borax and lemon juice (2:2:1), treat the stain, leave for 15 minutes. Blot the ink several times with a soft, clean, well-moistened sponge;
- dense fabrics - moisten the sponge in alcohol or acetone, wipe the stain;
- cotton - squeeze lemon juice, apply it to the problem area, leave for 8-15 minutes. Pour a little more juice onto the ink and gently wipe it off with a soft sponge;
- delicate fabrics - proceed as in the case of cotton, only dilute the juice with water 1:1.
It is more difficult to remove marker from paths and carpets, especially if the product is too light or fades. First, it is better to try ethyl alcohol, moisten a sponge with it, gently apply it to the stain several times, but do not rub, otherwise the stained area will become larger. Another option is to apply hairspray to the problem area, leave for a few minutes, when the ink dissolves, remove any remaining dirt and product.
After removing the ink, you need to wash the item by hand or select a delicate cycle on the washing machine. If a light spot remains, and there is no unnecessary damage to the fabric, the procedure can be repeated. Never wash items in hot water immediately after a stain appears; the ink will become firmly fixed in the fibers. When cleaning by any method, you can only use water at room temperature.

Remove any remaining dirt with a sponge soaked in alcohol (light touches), then wipe the surface with a dry cloth.
Attention! Pure alcohol cannot be used to clean wood; dilute it to 45 degrees or use vodka.
When cleaning wooden or lacquered furniture, use products recommended for hard surfaces. Sunblock will gently erase the marker, apply it to the stain, leave for 10-12 minutes and rinse. Do not rub the surface with a mixture of baking soda and toothpaste, apply the paste onto the mark of the felt-tip pen, let it dry a little (no more than 5 minutes), remove the residue with a damp washcloth.

How to remove felt-tip pen from wallpaper
Before you take out the felt-tip pen, figure out what type it is. There are three types of felt-tip pens and all of them are removed from the surface of the wallpaper in different ways: based on water, alcohol and oil.
To remove dirt from a water-based marker, take a cotton rag or cotton wool and soak it in hydrogen peroxide. Using gentle, gentle movements, rub over the stain on the wallpaper. Do not rub too hard, as you risk removing the pattern on the surface and even the wallpaper itself along with the felt-tip pen. The mark will not begin to rub off immediately, since it takes some time for the peroxide reaction to take place. Be patient and calm. If you have vinyl wallpaper, then instead of peroxide, use a stain remover that is used in washing clothes.
Alcohol-based markers are the most difficult to clean. There are three ways. The first is based on the “wedge-wedge” principle. Moisten a cotton wool or rag with alcohol or an alcohol-containing substance and gently rub the dirty area.
It is important that the alcohol-containing substance is transparent. And also change the cotton wool more often. Otherwise, marks will remain.
To erase a felt-tip pen on this basis, toothpaste is also used. An exclusively white substance is suitable. Rub the stained area with a cotton swab coated with paste, leave for a couple of minutes, and remove the layer of paste from the wall. The felt-tip pen should come off if you simply rub it a little afterwards.
The third method is based on the first, but improved. Combine rubbing alcohol and lemon juice in equal proportions. Moisten a cotton wool or cloth with this mixture and rub the painted area. Repeat several times until the stain disappears. But remember not to push too hard.
