Delicate attitude and no rush: how to wash a cashmere coat at home?

Cashmere coats are deservedly popular. They are light, warm, elegant and always at the peak of fashion.

To maintain a pleasant appearance, cashmere requires appropriate care. This rather capricious fabric does not tolerate high temperatures and aggressive influences.

How to wash a cashmere coat at home and is it possible to do without washing it directly? To clean a cashmere product without damaging its shape, color and structure, you must follow certain recommendations.

How can you clean cashmere outerwear?

Dry cleaning, machine washing, hand washing, dry cleaning are possible options that will help bring cashmere clothes into proper shape.

To decide on an option, you should start by examining the manufacturer's tag sewn to the product. In each individual case, only she will provide comprehensive information on caring for the item.

Cashmere is an expensive fabric. Sometimes manufacturers add cheaper natural and synthetic fibers to coats.

If the sewn-in label says WS 100% or 100% CASHMERE, this means that the product is made only from cashmere fabric. In this case, the item cannot be machine washed. The optimal solution is dry cleaning.

Products made from natural cashmere are impregnated with a special composition that maintains their shape and increases the service life of such clothing. Washing in a machine has a negative effect on this composition, washing it out of the fabric.

If the tag contains mention of other materials added to the fabric structure:

  • viscose,
  • nylon,
  • wool,

This will make caring for the item a little easier.

The manufacturer may allow delicate washing in a washing machine, dry cleaning or hand washing; the exact care parameters are outlined in the form of symbols on the coat label.

Coats made from natural fabrics do not like exposure to water. After water procedures, the item shrinks, losing its shape ; sloppy pellets may form on the surface, which spoils the appearance.

How to clean a coat made from natural fabric

Drape coat

Drape is a heavy, dense woolen fabric that does not fade, wrinkle, or fade. Since products made from natural wool are sensitive to hot water (they may shrink in size), we will clean the drape coat using the dryest methods possible.

  • To remove dust, use a coarse brush in the direction of the pile.
  • Rye bread will also help cope with dust: spread your coat on the floor and crumble the crumb on top. Then roll the crumbs over the surface of the fabric until balls form. Brush off any remaining crumbs (don't brush them off if you want to become a favorite of the local pigeons).
  • Try to remove stains on your outerwear without washing. Dissolve a little mild detergent in water and dampen the stains on the drape with this liquid. Wait 5-10 minutes and wipe the coat with a damp sponge to remove soap particles.
  • As a last resort, you can try washing the coat, but preferably by hand and in lukewarm water (no more than 30 °C).
  • After all bath procedures, be sure to dry the drape properly. Hang it on a hanger in a well-ventilated area. Give the coat time to dry completely so that it does not lose its shape.

Tweed coat

Tweed is an elastic wool fabric with a small pile. It gets dirty a little, practically does not wrinkle and lasts a long time.

  • To remove dust, vacuum the coat.
  • If the tweed is stained, dry the stain and then brush off the dirt. This may be enough.
  • If dirt has become embedded in the fabric, do the same as with a drape: moisten the dirt with soapy water, and then comb it with a damp brush.
  • It is highly undesirable to wash a tweed coat. If this is necessary, do not use a washing machine and do not leave the fabric in water for a long time. Wash and rinse tweed by hand in warm (no more than 30 °C) water.
  • Dry your coat properly: on a horizontal surface between two towels to avoid deformation.
  • You need to iron tweed from the wrong side, placing a damp cloth between the fabric and the iron.

Cashmere coat

Cashmere is the airy undercoat combed from the barrels of fluffy mountain goats. This is a very soft and delicate material, sensitive to external influences. Therefore, we will treat him extremely courteously.

  • To remove dust from your coat, wipe it with a damp cloth.
  • Soak greasy stains with a small amount of purified gasoline, and sprinkle talcum powder on top. Once dry, brush off any remaining residue. If necessary, repeat the procedure again.
  • To remove sweat stains, prepare cotton wool, soap and ammonia. First, wipe the stain with a swab soaked in soapy water, then with ammonia, and then with a damp cloth.
  • To remove a stain whose origin you cannot identify, mix glycerin and ammonia in equal proportions and rub the stained area with the mixture several times. Then remove any remaining liquid with a damp cloth.
  • Read the label carefully: some types of cashmere cannot be machine washed.
  • If your coat can be washed (when it is really necessary), choose a delicate cycle without spinning, a water temperature no higher than 30 ° C and liquid detergents. Remember: cashmere should not be rubbed or twisted, otherwise it will lose its shape.
  • To properly dry cashmere, lightly wring it out with your hands after washing and place it on a towel spread on a horizontal surface away from heaters and direct sunlight. Do not dry your coat on hangers to prevent it from stretching.
  • If you want to iron cashmere, do it only with steam, without touching the surface of the iron to the fabric.

Coats made from other types of wool

If you understand that your coat is made from the down of some animals, but do not understand which ones, follow the general recommendations for caring for woolen products. Before using any cleaning method, test it on a small, inconspicuous area of clothing.

  • Remove dust and small lint with a soft, dry brush or roller with adhesive tape.
  • To add shine to a dark-colored item, wipe it with a cotton swab dipped in strong black tea.
  • Worn areas on the collar or sleeves can be treated with a mixture of ammonia and salt in a ratio of 1: 4. Problem areas are rubbed with it, and the remains are cleaned with a brush.
  • Clean any stains from the edges to the center: this will prevent streaks from appearing on the fur.
  • Remove greasy stains from the inside of the product using a cotton swab moistened with purified gasoline. Place a piece of clean cloth on the outside of the stain. When the dirt disappears, wipe everything with a damp cloth.
  • Alcohol stains can be removed with vinegar and alcohol. Mix the liquids in equal proportions, moisten a cotton swab with the solution and wipe the stain.
  • Other stains can be removed using a soapy solution with ammonia. To 100 ml of warm water, add a tablespoon of liquid soap and ammonia. Soak a cotton swab in the solution and treat the stains with it. Then remove any remaining soap with a damp cloth. For prevention, carry out this procedure regularly.
  • If the coat can be washed (there is an inscription about this on the label), do it by hand in water not hotter than 30 ° C so that the product does not shrink. Preferably with a special detergent for wool. Do not twist or rub the coat to avoid creases.
  • Dry all items horizontally, lined with towels to absorb moisture. If you hang a natural coat on hangers, it can stretch out due to its own weight, so it’s better not to take risks.

How to prepare a product for washing?

The rules for preparing a cashmere coat for washing are identical to the rules for any outerwear:

  • carefully study the instructions for cleaning the product on the label;

  • unfasten the fur, remove the belt and overhead decorative elements;
  • check the internal and external pockets and remove all items from them;
  • remove visible stains;
  • When washing clothes by machine, fasten all the buttons and zippers, turn them inside out and place them in a special laundry bag.

If you don't have a laundry bag, you should use a regular white duvet cover . Additionally, before washing, you can use a sticky clothes roller to go over the entire surface of the coat. He will remove:

  • small hairs,
  • hairs,
  • threads

The collar, pockets, cuffs and lining should also be refreshed using a soft brush lightly moistened with water.

How to properly wash by hand?

Hand washing a cashmere coat is quite a painstaking task, but the result is worth it. It is important to observe the temperature regime, gentle force of influence, and the quality of rinses.

Only liquid detergents are suitable for washing this type of clothing. If you don’t have this on hand, you can use regular hair shampoo.

The algorithm for washing a cashmere coat by hand is as follows:

  • Pour warm water into a sufficiently large container, the temperature of which does not exceed 30°C;

  • dissolve the detergent, do not add bleach;
  • completely immerse the clothing in water, lightly pressing the fabric with your hands;
  • leave for twenty minutes;
  • with smooth movements of the palms along the surface of the fabric from top to bottom, walk over the entire product, squeezing and rubbing is not allowed;
  • particularly contaminated areas can be brushed with a soft brush or sponge;
  • rinse the coat several times, thereby removing any remaining detergent;
  • drain all the water, lightly press the item, getting rid of excess liquid;
  • spread out on a horizontal surface, laying it on a cotton cloth or towel, changing them as they get wet.

Water for washing and rinsing cashmere products must be at the same temperature , otherwise the material will deform and shrink.

Cleaning Features

Cleaning any outerwear begins with an inspection of the product. Hang the coat on a hanger in a well-lit place, carefully inspect the surface and inside of the coat for stains, dirt, abrasions and greasy areas. Pay special attention to the lining and problem areas, including cuffs, collar and pockets.

Study the product label for instructions on how to properly clean, wash, dry and iron your clothing. But even if the label says you can wash your cashmere coat at home, dry clean first. Moreover, greasy stains and many stains can be removed only in this way.

To clean a cashmere coat, use a special clothes brush with soft bristles, as well as a soft cloth or sponge. Under no circumstances should you use a regular hard brush, and you should not scrub the material too hard.

Otherwise, cashmere will become deformed and will not return to its previous shape. You need to clean your coat with soft, smooth blotting movements using a sponge or a special brush for cashmere.

After dry cleaning, clothes are dried in an upright position on a hanger in a well-ventilated area. To prevent creases or dents from appearing on the material, leave the product hanging in the bathroom with air steamed with hot water.

Then the cashmere will smooth out, retain its texture and look like new. After machine or hand washing, coats can only be dried horizontally! You can wrap the item in a large terry towel to absorb excess moisture.

Can it be washed in a washing machine?

If the product label allows machine washing, it means that the manufacturer has provided this cleaning option, and strict adherence to the requirements of the pictograms will preserve the appearance and refresh the item.

Sometimes, after washing, cashmere can lose its original color, bright colors fade. This should be taken into account when deciding how to clean your coat.

The process of washing a cashmere coat in a machine includes several steps:

  • this item is washed alone, there should be no other clothes in the drum;

  • pour liquid washing gel into the special compartment of the machine, be sure to add conditioner - it will soften the cashmere fabric after washing;
  • there is no need to pre-soak the product;
  • select one of the following washing modes – “hand”, “delicate” or “wool”, turning off the spin function;
  • maximum water temperature thirty degrees;
  • the coat must be rid of the slightest traces of washing liquids, otherwise unsightly stains will remain; for this, use an additional rinse or the “rinse+” mode;
  • After washing is completed, the clothes are laid out on a horizontal surface, pressing lightly, and blotted from excess water with a terry towel.

How to Clean a Faux Fabric Coat

Polyester coat

Polyester is a special type of synthetic fabric made from polyester fibers. It wrinkles little, retains its shape well and is easy to wash.

  • Dust can be removed with a brush or simply by thoroughly shaking the coat.
  • To remove stains, use a stain remover (check the reaction on a small area of fabric first).
  • Treat difficult stains with table salt: sprinkle on the stains, and after half an hour, wash off with soapy water.
  • Remove the most stubborn stains using a 10% borax solution: apply it to the coat, then wipe the stain with lemon juice, and then remove the residue with a damp cloth.
  • The coat can be washed by hand in water no hotter than 30°C, without twisting or creasing the fabric.
  • Wash polyester in the washing machine with a mild detergent. Choose a delicate or synthetic mode.
  • Do not wash polyester in hot water or use bleach as this will damage the fabric.

Neoprene coat

Neoprene is an artificial foam rubber covered on both sides with fabric. Neither water nor stains linger on neoprene, and bacteria do not multiply. It does not wrinkle or wear out.

  • Did you manage to get it dirty? Feel free to throw your coat in the washing machine: delicate cycle, temperature no higher than 30 °C, soft powder. You will have to wash it twice: first the outer surface, then the inside.
  • Also dry the coat on both sides, avoiding direct sunlight. Periodically turn it inside out and back again.
  • That's it, your neoprene coat is ready. Remember: it is not recommended to wear such non-breathable products for more than 2-3 hours a day.

Dry clean without washing

This cleaning method involves the use of dry substances and solutions, minimizing contact of the fabric with water.

After preliminary preparation of the coat for cleaning, shake it several times, getting rid of small debris and dust, place it on hangers in a vertical position, and fasten it.

For dry cleaning, use a soft bristled brush or sponge . You can lightly moisten it with water and carefully clean the entire surface of the product with gentle movements from top to bottom:

  1. Dishwashing detergent can help remove greasy stains: apply a drop of it to the dirty area, wait a few minutes, then easily wipe with a cotton pad.

  2. The same stains on light cashmere fabric can be removed with talcum powder. The algorithm is as follows: pour a thick layer of talcum powder onto the dirty area, leave for a couple of hours, and clean with a brush. Talc can be replaced with salt.
  3. Contaminants from coffee and tea are removed with a mixture of glycerin and ammonia in a 2:1 ratio. After applying the composition to the stain, blot the area with a damp sponge.
  4. Lipstick marks can be removed with alcohol.
  5. Stains left by ink are removed with soda, a little water is added to it, turning it into a paste, applied to the ink mark and left for ten to fifteen minutes, then brushed off and wiped with a damp sponge.

When using industrial stain removers, make sure they do not contain chlorine.

After cleaning the contaminated surface, the coat should be allowed to dry, carefully smoothing the fibers of the fabric in the affected area so that it does not differ from the rest of the material.

Methods for cleaning a cashmere coat

Very often, a coat is susceptible to the appearance of unwanted stains, and they appear in spots, so there is no need to go to the dry cleaner; you can remove them yourself. But you need to remember that the method of cleaning cashmere products should be selected based on the nature of the contamination.

Oily stains

One of the most common problems is greasy stains. You can clean a cashmere coat at home from this type of contamination using baby talc. They need to be sprinkled generously on the stained area and left for several hours. The talc will absorb all the fat, and then all you have to do is shake it off your coat. Most likely, you won’t be able to completely remove grease stains the first time. Therefore, the procedure must be repeated until the desired effect is achieved.

Stains on collar and cuffs

Using a solution of ammonia and gasoline, you can remove stains on the collar and cuffs of a cashmere coat. The ratio of this mixture will be 4:1. The area of contamination is thoroughly soaked with a diluted solution, sprinkled with salt and carefully treated with a sponge. If the cuffs are very greasy, then to achieve the best result, you should use a stiff clothes brush.

Lipstick stains

It is common for women to have lipstick stains on their clothes. You can clean a cashmere coat from this type of contamination using an alcohol-containing liquid. As soon as the lipstick marks disappear from the fabric, you need to treat the area with slightly heated glycerin. Then rinse with cold running water.

Under no circumstances should you delay cleaning your cashmere coat, as fresh dirt is always easier to remove without affecting the clothing.

Light cashmere coat

It’s worth noting right away that any cleaning of a light cashmere coat at home requires great care; in addition to the fact that the material is very delicate, the color of the product also aggravates the process.

If for some reason you do not want to go to the dry cleaner, then you should use special means to remove contaminants. They are sold in the same stores where the clothes themselves are sold. But remember that a certain type of stain should be removed with a composition that is designed to combat it.

You cannot use brute physical force, since the big disadvantage of cashmere fabric is the rapid deformation of the structure of the material. When removing dirt, it is best to use light movements, reminiscent of blotting. If a brush is used for cleaning, it must be specially designed for this purpose. This device has a soft textured surface that will not violate the integrity of cashmere, and at the same time will cope with its assigned duties perfectly. This brush should be used not only to remove stains, but also to restore the appearance of the product.

Dark cashmere coat

The requirements for cleaning methods for a black cashmere coat are essentially identical to those for removing dirt from light-colored models. It is also worth selecting special formulations depending on the type of dirt and being very careful when removing stains so as not to disturb the structure of cashmere.

How to dry?

It is important not only to carefully follow the recommendations for washing cashmere clothes. Properly organized drying of the product is also of great importance.

A few simple tips will help you complete the coat cleaning process without any problems:

  • after washing, spread a large terry towel on a flat surface (table or floor) and place the item on it;

  • straighten all the folds and bends, giving the clothes the required shape;
  • Use a cotton cloth to blot the entire surface of the product, pressing;
  • periodically change the towel and cloth to dry ones;
  • hang the almost dry coat on wide hangers and dry it in a vertical position;
  • You can iron this item from the inside out through damp gauze;
  • Steaming is carried out without touching the surface of the clothing with the iron.

In addition, there are three limitations to remember:

  • Do not dry coats using heaters or hair dryers;
  • the item should not be in direct sunlight or in a draft;
  • It is prohibited to dry wet cashmere items vertically.

Failure to follow these rules will lead to shrinkage of the coat, sagging of the lining, the appearance of folds and creases, and deterioration in the appearance and thermal qualities of the product.

It is best to store a cashmere coat in a special case; it will protect the material from the adhesion of small particles, dust, and contact with other things.

How to clean a drape coat

Drape is the most popular material for sewing coats. Drapery products are in high demand among both men and women due to their thermal insulation properties. It is noteworthy that a drape coat is not cold in winter and not hot in spring. Such qualities brought drape to first place in the list of materials for outerwear.

However, it is products made from drape that are subject to more frequent cleaning, since such a coat acts as an everyday wardrobe item. And it is the drape product that, as a rule, cannot be machine washed. It is almost impossible to wash it by hand: it simply will not be possible to effectively remove dirt due to the large weight of the wet material. Therefore, an interesting cleaning method was invented.

To deal with stains and remove dust from the drape coat, it is recommended to use a regular carpet cleaner. You must act according to the instructions: dilute the product in water until foam appears, apply to the surface, and after drying, clean with a brush.

You can also use a soap solution made from wool detergent and water. Dip a clean cloth in this mixture and treat the contaminated areas. You can simply walk a little over the rest of the surface with the same rag.

In this case, the top layer of material should only get slightly wet. After half an hour, the solution will take effect, after which you can remove the residue with a clean cloth soaked in water. The cleaned drape coat must be hung on hangers of a suitable size and left to dry completely.
