Is it possible to wash trousers in a washing machine?
Here you will learn how to properly wash suit trousers in a washing machine. How to properly clean things that are prohibited by the manufacturer from being machine washed.
First of all, let's figure out what material they are made of. The main types of material for making trousers are:
- Synthetic material;
- Viscose, semi-viscose;
- Semi-cotton;
- Pure cotton;
- Linen;
- Wool.
There are also less popular materials such as velor, corduroy and velvet. Dry cleaning only is recommended for them. To clean such trouser fabric, use a special, soft brush with fine bristles.
If your pants require more thorough care, you should soak the pants by adding a special detergent for delicate fabrics to the water. Do not use spin. It is better to dry on a horizontal surface, first placing a towel under the product to absorb excess moisture.
Washing methods differ for different types of material. For trousers made of more delicate fabrics, for example, washing velvet in a machine is not advisable. It is also better to wash corduroy by hand. Usually the manufacturer indicates on the tag whether the items can be washed in a machine.
How to wash them correctly and how to preserve the arrows after washing. So, select the delicate or hand wash mode on the washing machine and set the temperature to no more than 60C. Do not forget that classic pants should be placed in a special bag for washing, and it is better to dry them folded in the direction of the arrows.
How to care for trousers made from different materials
When choosing a washing method, you need to take into account the type of material of the product, because it can react differently to detergents and water temperature. Wool clothes should not be washed in hot water (more than 40 °C), as the material may shrink. Fabric trousers with wool, for example, mohair, cashmere, are not easy to wash, so it is better not to do this at home.
For trousers made from linen and cotton, the washing method is the same, but these items cannot be rinsed in cool water, as the material may shrink if the water temperature changes sharply.
It is very easy to wash stains on linen and cotton pants, as this fabric is highly resistant to many stain removers. Grease stains are easily removed with dishwashing liquid, ink stains disappear when treated with alcohol, stains from tomato juice disappear with hydrogen peroxide. But a stain on wool trousers is not easy to remove, since this material is very capricious.
Corduroy trousers can only be washed by hand, after first turning them inside out. Gently wash your pants in warm water and rinse thoroughly. Corduroy pants should not be squeezed or rubbed too hard.
If the pants are slightly dirty, they are made of corduroy, you can clean them:
- lay out clothes on a hard surface;
- add a little powder to warm water and dip a sponge into the solution;
- use a damp sponge to treat corduroy trousers without rubbing water into the fabric;
- Rinse the sponge and go over the fabric again.
Viscose pants need to be washed very carefully, as when wet the fabric loses its strength. Polyester clothing can be machine washed at a water temperature of no more than 40°C.
Before washing, leather trousers should be soaked in warm water for half an hour to soak them. You need to wash such clothes very carefully and dry them in a room close to a heater or radiator, but not on the device itself. To hide all imperfections, you need to lubricate completely dry leather trousers with a special cream.
You can try to wash off all the stains in the washing machine, setting it on the delicate cycle at a water temperature of no higher than 30 °C. If your leather pants are simply dusty, it is better to simply wipe them with a damp sponge dipped in a soap solution. When the clothes are dry, apply a special product or cream to maintain the shine and moisture of the skin.
Light leather pants are washed in warm water with the addition of baby soap or shampoo and a couple of drops of ammonia.
How to wash sweatpants and other trousers
How to properly wash corduroy items, sports or wool pants, trousers with creases and stripes. Before you start washing, sort your items by material type and color. We put white and light linen on one side, colored and dark linen on the other.
This is necessary to preserve the color of the products and eliminate the possibility of some items molting onto others. Corduroy items, items made of wool, cotton and textiles must be washed separately.
Heavily soiled items must be soaked in a bowl of water (40-50C) before being washed in a washing machine, adding liquid detergent or laundry soap. Wet stubborn stains and scrub thoroughly with laundry soap. Next, hand wash the problem area. It is not recommended to wash woolen items by rubbing or twisting. This will stretch them.
To give things freshness, soak them in warm soapy water and then rinse. This will help avoid even delicate washing, while removing fresh dirt.
Hand washing trousers
Tips to help you wash your trousers by hand quickly and without problems:
- You need to remove all foreign objects from your pockets: phone, wallet, cash, candy. Yes, this is an obvious tip, but sometimes even the most focused owners forget about it.
- Next, you need to fasten the zipper and, if present, all the buttons.
- The pants need to be carefully straightened so that after washing they retain their shape and the arrows do not disappear.
- It is worth paying special attention to the choice of detergent. For woolen pants, a special detergent is required; for washing other materials, it is better to use delicate laundry powder or regular laundry soap. The powder should be dissolved in a separate container, then there will be no soap stains left on the clothes.
- You can make a cleaning solution and apply it to your brush. After this, completely rub your pants. When using a liquid product or soap, you also need to apply it to the brush, and then only to the item of clothing.
- Particular care must be taken to coat the bottom of the trousers, as well as the pockets and belt. If your pants are very dirty, you should leave them for half an hour after treatment. During this time, the detergent will be absorbed into the dirt and will completely remove the dirt after washing.
- The final stage is to wash off the detergent using a shower or under running water.
- The trousers do not need to be wrung out. It is enough to hang them over the bathtub for 30 minutes to drain the water. After this, the pants can be hung in another room, on the balcony or outside. In sunny weather, the pants will dry much faster.

Features for products with arrows
Most suit trousers have pressed creases. When washing by hand, you should try to straighten the item so that the pant legs lie freely in the bath and do not bunch up. Twisting such products is categorically unacceptable, as is spinning, which can destroy the shape of the hands.
Before putting such pants into the drum of the machine, they are carefully folded so that the arrows on both legs match. The trousers themselves must be carefully rolled up and placed in a laundry bag.
The less exposure they are exposed to, the better. When machine washing trousers with arrows, it is better to turn off the spin cycle completely.
Drying Features
- After washing, hang your pants over the bathtub.
- Do not dry clothes near heating appliances, this will shrink them several sizes.
- After the dress pants are dry, you should place them on a drying board, folding them in the direction of the arrow. The arrow starts from the first belt loop. Next, we iron them, as if applying an iron to the arrow for a few seconds. We do the same with the back side.
- When drying trousers, to avoid creases, use a special hanger at the waist.
- We finally dry the items by hanging them on a special trouser hanger and leaving them for at least a day.
- Do not wear wet pants after washing so that the creases set well.
- Do not dry cotton items near the radiator. It is best to simply hang them on the clothes dryer.
- For dry pants, fold the pant leg to the pant leg along the arrows.
- It's easier to iron trousers with neat creases using little tricks.
Rules of care
Read the label before ironing your pants. At what temperature does the manufacturer recommend ironing them? Iron your trousers from the wrong side. To align the arrow, you can use a woolen thread soaked in a solution of vinegar or formic alcohol.
If ironing creates shiny areas on your trousers, this can be easily corrected. You moisten the gauze with the same vinegar solution, apply it to this place and use an iron to steam the product.
The frequency of washing should be no more than 1-2 washes per week. Limit machine washing to once; how often to hand wash items depends on the degree of soiling. It is not recommended to wash trousers together with jeans and other items made of thicker fabric.
- The washing machine jumps during the spin cycle, what should I do?
- Why does the washing machine make a lot of noise when spinning?
How to effectively remove stains
Before removing dirt, you need to clear the area of dust. Then, in an inconspicuous place, preferably on a piece of cloth that was sold with the trousers, you should check how the material transfers the product.
The stain must be treated from the edge to the central part, and then the fabric around the stain must be treated. You should not rub the material, just soak it in a suitable solution.
Such contamination must be immediately sprinkled with salt and rubbed. Then the salt is changed several times until the stain is eliminated. Talcum powder is also great. It is better to remove greasy stains from wool trousers with gasoline.
Wine or juice
Red wine or juice stains are also sprinkled with salt and left for 20 minutes. Then the product is rinsed with warm water. A weak solution of citric acid can remove old stains. White wine stains can be removed with ice or cold water.
Blood
It is better to remove such stains in cold water. Fresh dirt just needs to be rinsed under running water and then washed with laundry soap. You can also soak the item for 4-5 hours in cold water, to which powder, stain remover or bleach can be added if desired.
Ink
Contaminants from pens are removed with a swab soaked in alcohol, lemon juice or citric acid solution. A mixture of wine and ammonia alcohols, mixed in equal quantities, has an excellent effect. Only after removing the stain can you begin the main wash.
