If rust stains appear on denim, first of all you need to find out what means you can use to remove them so as not to ruin your trousers. There are several safe ways to clean fabric from such contaminants.
Acidic products

Under the influence of acid-containing agents, iron begins to decompose into two substances, which can be easily washed separately from each other..
Washing is carried out according to the following scheme:
- Acid is applied to the contamination (if citric acid is used, it is mixed with water in advance to form a kind of slurry).
- The fabric is heated with a hairdryer or covered with a cloth and ironed.
- After completing these steps, wash the clothes in the usual way.
Glycerol
- Glycerin is heated in a water bath or in a microwave oven.
- The product is applied to the dirt.
- After 5 minutes, the product is washed off.
After performing this procedure, not a trace remains of the stain.

- The cleaner is applied to the stain.
- After 15 minutes, the dirt is treated with a stiff brush.
- Clothes are washed in large quantities of powder.
- Rinse in clean water several times.
Toothpaste
What do we have to do:
- A small amount of paste is mixed with water.
- The resulting mass is applied in a thick layer to the rust.
- Wait about half an hour.
- Jeans are washed in the usual way, rinsed well.
Lemon and hydrogen peroxide
- Apply lemon juice to the stain.
- After 5 minutes, the stain is rinsed with water.
- Hydrogen peroxide is applied to it and left for 5-6 minutes.
- Jeans are washed and rinsed thoroughly.
Removing stains from denim and outerwear
In modern life, almost every housewife has had to deal with scale. An excellent anti-scalp product helps combat this problem, which will save you from unwanted stains on denim clothes. In addition, washing off rust on denim clothes can be done in a well-known way - using lemon juice or citric acid. It is necessary to apply freshly squeezed juice or citric acid diluted in water to the stain and dry it with an iron or hair dryer, after which the item must be washed thoroughly. What means are considered the most gentle?
Among the effective means, the following should be highlighted:

- Fairy. Dishwashing detergent is mixed in equal proportions with glycerin. The stain is treated with this paste. A day later, the jeans are washed.
- Hyposulfite. A teaspoon of the product is mixed with a glass of water. The solution is heated to +60 °C. The area of fabric with the stain is soaked in the liquid until the rust disappears.
- Salt. This product is mixed with vinegar in equal proportions. The resulting mass is applied to the dirt and left for 12 hours, then the clothes are washed and rinsed in the standard way.
How to remove stains?
Rust very quickly penetrates deeply into the fabric and becomes fixed in its fibers. How to remove rust stains from jeans, especially if they are old? Grandma's proven recipes and modern household chemicals will help. First, you should try to wash the stains with a high-quality powder with a whitening effect. It is best to use gel powder, which is especially suitable for washing light-colored trousers.
How to remove a rust stain on light-colored jeans with powder? First, the gel is applied to the stain and left for half an hour. Then the stain is washed off with a brush. After this, rinse the item and rub the stain again with household soap. Only after such manipulations are the trousers sent to the washing machine and washed at high temperature with a large amount of powder. But this method of how to remove rust on jeans is more suitable for light-colored trousers made of more or less dense fabric.
But how can you remove rust from jeans that are made from delicate fabric that requires careful handling? In this case, proven stain removal recipes will help. For example, you can use glycerin.
Removing stains with glycerin
If the fabric from which the jeans are made does not allow the use of aggressive powders and stain removers due to its texture, then you should try to get rid of rust marks using glycerin. You should slightly heat regular glycerin, which is sold in tubes in pharmacies, in the microwave, and then carefully apply it to the rust. Leave the glycerin on for a few minutes and then wash it off with regular dishwashing detergent. There should not be a trace of rust left.
It is much easier to remove rust marks from thick fabric. Acids will help with this.
Removing rust with acids
If the jeans are made from a thick enough fabric that can safely “survive” the effects of acids, then try to wash off the rust at home with acetic, tartaric or citric acid. This method of removing rust from jeans is quite gentle, but is only suitable for thick fabric.
The principle of action of acid on rust stains is very simple - the substance decomposes iron into two components, which can be easily washed off separately. Even complex rust stains can be removed at home with simple acids, which can be purchased anywhere.
Ways to remove traces of machine oil
1. Laundry soap. The most gentle thing. Just rub the dirty area with laundry soap and leave for 3-4 hours. Then scrub the stain vigorously with a stiff-bristled brush under hot running water until completely removed. It may take 10-15 minutes. Then wash your clothes as usual.
2. Dishwashing liquid. Helps in removing new machine oil stains as it is designed to wash away grease. Treat the stained area with dishwashing detergent (the fabric should be thoroughly soaked) and leave for several hours, then rinse with warm water and wash.
3. Toothpaste. Absorbs fresh machine oil well. Apply white toothpaste to the stain and leave until completely dry, then wet, scrub with a toothbrush and rinse in warm water.
4. Washing powder. Its thick consistency successfully removes oily marks. Dilute the powder with water to a homogeneous thick mass, apply the mixture to the stain, rub well, remove the contaminated powder, apply a new portion and remove again. Repeat the procedure until the trace of machine oil is removed. To increase the effectiveness of the technique, add a little dishwashing detergent to the powder.
5. Ammonia. Works only on fresh machine oil stains. Dilute ammonia halfway with hot water, soak the stained fabric in the solution for 15 minutes and put it in the wash.
6. Iron (heat treatment). Apply a thick layer of napkins to the outside and back of the contaminated fabric, heat the iron and iron the napkins. The high temperature will melt the machine oil, which will be absorbed into the wipes. In this case, an unpleasant odor may appear in the room.
7. Stain remover. Use a stain remover suitable for the item (for white or colored clothes), the main thing is not to damage the fabric. Apply the product in a thick layer to the contaminated area, leave for 30 minutes, then rinse with water. When streaking, mix the powder and stain remover in equal parts.

8. Gasoline. Like motor oil, it is made from petroleum, so both substances dissolve each other. Technology: mix gasoline with liquid soap in a 1:1 ratio, apply the solution to the stain and leave for 60-80 minutes. Rinse with warm water and cover the contaminated area with baking soda, which will remove dark stains from the stain. After 10 minutes, rinse off the soda and wash as usual. Gasoline can be replaced with kerosene or acetone-based solvent.
9. Special spray. Thanks to a special chemical formula, it is designed to remove stains from engine oil in cars, but also works well on clothes. You can buy the product (there are several brands) at an auto store. Proceed according to the manufacturer's instructions.
10. Ammonia and turpentine. Used to remove stains on silk, wool, velvet and acetate. Mix both substances in equal parts, then wipe the stained area with a cotton pad soaked in the solution. Wash your clothes. Ammonia can be replaced with denatured alcohol.
What do they take out?
If rust remains after washing, do not rush to take the clothes to the dry cleaner or throw away the item. Remove stains with budget-friendly means:
- oxalic acid;
- potash (potassium carbonate) or baking soda;
- glycerin;
- white chalk;
- acetic acid;
- lemon juice (powdered citric acid);
- hydrosulfite solution (I use it only on undyed fabrics).
Rust, like any metal, comes into good contact with acids, disintegrating under their influence, so applying acidic substances will help to easily remove stains, even on colored ones.
All of the listed funds will not be needed immediately; you can take only a few, based on the quality or color of the fabric, or from the substances at hand.
