How to choose anti-bedbug medications
When choosing a drug for bedbugs, you must be guided by important criteria:
- The composition should not contain too high concentrations of chemical compounds, as this will negatively affect the health of both people and pets.
- Consider the aroma of the product. More often, such preparations do not erode for a long time, causing inconvenience to residents of an apartment or house.
- Method of use of the drug. Some of them can be used immediately after purchase, others need to be diluted in water.
Types of bedbugs
Scientists have data on the presence of more than 5 thousand species of bedbugs. The most common is the bed bug, which prefers to settle in a person’s home and feeds on human blood. Despite this, other types of bedbugs deserve attention. For example:
- Water bug . This insect prefers to settle in bodies of water and feed on creatures living in the water. It grows up to 1.5 cm in length. The water bug is not dangerous to humans. But its bites can cause allergic reactions and pain.
- Wood bug . It prefers to live on various kinds of bushes and, for humans, does not pose any danger, even if it gets into an apartment or house.
- Green bug . A fairly common pest that lives on plants such as raspberries and strawberries. It does not pose any danger to humans, but it is dangerous for strawberries and wild strawberries, as it feeds on the juices of these berries.
- Red bug . They usually appear in early spring, when the sun begins to warm up, and in the fall, when the last warmth is observed outside before the onset of cold weather. They can be seen by their bright colors and numerous groups basking in the sun. These creatures feed on plant sap and have a detrimental effect on the condition of many trees.

To combat bed bugs, you need to dissolve 50 ml of the drug in 1 liter of water and disinfest the furniture. You can return to the apartment in five to seven hours after thoroughly ventilating the room.
Handy methods of dealing with bedbugs
You can use improvised means that are in addition to modern store-bought drugs.
- Salt. Stir in water to form a concentrated liquid. Then add 2 tbsp per 1 liter of salt. hydrogen peroxide and medical alcohol.
- Vinegar. Mix equal parts industrial alcohol, naphthalene, vinegar. Treat surfaces with the resulting product. You can also lubricate with vinegar essence without mixing.
- Petrolatum. The product has a viscous consistency. Apply it to the legs of the bed. Bed bugs running through the Vaseline will get stuck. In the morning, all that remains is to throw away the dead insects.
- Industrial alcohol. Pour technical alcohol (denatured alcohol) into the places where insect nests are found.
- Ethanol. Parasites cannot tolerate alcoholic beverages. Alcohol suppresses the central nervous system of insects. It is necessary to wipe the surfaces with such a liquid.
- Turpentine. Used in homemade insect repellent formulations. Mix 1 tbsp. turpentine and kerosene, add 80 ml of water and 20 ml of liquid soap. Use this mixture to wipe problem areas where pests may appear.
- Ammonia. Dilute in water – 0.5 tbsp. ammonia per 0.45 liters of water. Spray in the room.
- Kerosene. Stir 200 ml of cresol and kerosene each, add 10 g of naphthalene. Apply this solution to areas where there are bedbugs (you can use a brush).
"Xulat"
“Xulat” is also a modern microencapsulated insecticide, the active component of which is three substances at once:
- tetramethrin;
- piperonyl butoxide;
- cypermethrin.
Poisoning of the parasite and death occur within two to three hours after its contact with the poison. “Xulat” is not addictive. The residual effect lasts for six months.
The advantage of the drug is the absence of odor and complete safety for people.
Soap is an assistant in getting rid of bedbugs
This method is not suitable for textile products (bedspreads, carpets, linen). The solution is used to wipe only floors, furniture, walls and other hard surfaces.
It is recommended to use household. Grind the product using a grater. Then fill with water. The result is a concentrated soap solution. Use it to wipe surfaces in the house where bedbugs can move.
Apply the composition with a brush or sponge. There is no need to rub it hard - just moisten it. You should not wipe it - wait until it dries. You will have to repeat these steps 2-3 times a day.
Soap solution is also used in another way - poured into the cracks where there are bedbugs. Insects suffocate.
In addition, soap is alkaline, so parasites are poisoned. It is allowed to add salt to the solution. Household soap is replaced with liquid soap.
It is recommended to wipe surfaces with insecticidal preparations before using Vaseline.
Verbal support
A winning position involves studying the enemy in detail. Agree, if you are well informed about who is opposing you, then the fight will become easier. You can ask your friends and relatives about how to poison bedbugs at home.
We recommend that (if the opportunity arises) you ask not only your loved ones, but also your neighbors if they have had unpleasant “roommates”. At a minimum, you will hear good advice and receive support, and at a maximum, they will come to your aid. Therefore, it is important to maintain good relationships.
If it concerns a multi-storey residential building, then it is advisable to know which of the neighbors has or had parasites. Perhaps a sympathetic person has some “Dust” left or some kind of aerosol that he will be happy to share. Such situations are not exceptional; they are very common.
Anti-bug herbs
Herbs repel bed bugs with their scent. At the same time, the plants are safe for humans and pets. They use wormwood, tansy, chamomile, calamus, wild rosemary.
Plants are used both fresh and dried. The main thing is that they have a pungent aroma.
You can tie herbs into bunches and hang them around the room. Dried plants are ground into powder and scattered around the perimeter of the room, under the sofa, bed, mattresses and armchairs. The only negative is that you will have to periodically replace powders and bunches of herbs with fresh ones.
Tinctures are prepared based on such plants. This requires:
- 8 tbsp. raw materials pour 1 liter of boiling water.
- Cook for 5 minutes.
- Leave until it cools down.
- Strain and spray around the room from a spray bottle.
- Wipe the surface with the product.
This procedure will have to be done 2-3 times a day.
Hazard to human health
There is an assumption that bedbugs are carriers of deadly infections. There is no scientific evidence for this yet. However, the insect can still seriously injure children and adults. First of all, mentally. The table will show why parasite bites are dangerous to human health.
Table - Why bed bugs are dangerous
Danger | Details |
Bites | — One individual leaves a chain of five to seven bites; — there is a risk of infection through the area injured by the bug |
Allergic reaction | - It can be very extensive; - sometimes anaphylactic shock occurs |
Anemia | — Iron deficiency occurs due to blood loss; - the condition is diagnosed in childhood |
Insomnia | Due to regular attacks by bedbugs at night, people do not get enough sleep |
Stress | — Regular lack of sleep puts the body in a state of stress; - there is a need for psychological support |
Depression | — Often turns into prolonged stress; - requires the intervention of a psychiatrist due to danger to physical and mental health; - significantly worsens the patient’s quality of life |
Essential oils
Essential oils are used to combat bedbugs. Such products repel pests due to their specific aroma and affect the nervous system of parasites.
Thyme, mint, lavender, clove, and eucalyptus oils are better suited. You can leave 2-3 drops around the perimeter of the rooms, near beds and sofas.
Essential oils are mixed with clean water - 1 tsp. per 100-200 ml of liquid. Then spray from a spray bottle around the room, over bedding and furniture.
You will have to repeat the procedure periodically. You can use more than one oil, but mix it in different combinations with the same parts.
Cedar oil works well. It repels insects and is used to treat bite sites. The product relieves itching, burning, swelling, redness, and accelerates healing.
Lavender oil is used for preventive purposes when traveling. The corners of suitcases are moistened with it to prevent bedbugs from being brought home from hotels and other places.
How to prepare a room for treatment
In order to carry out sanitization effectively, it is important to know how to properly prepare the room for it. To do this you need:
- Remove absolutely all food and dishes from the apartment. If you are unable to do this, you must store it in a remote location and be sure to completely cover it with an impervious material.
- Move all furniture away from the walls at a distance of at least 10-15 centimeters. This is necessary in order to provide yourself with full access to all corners, baseboards, and crevices in which pests can hide.
- Remove all contents from linen drawers and soft corners.
- Wash bedding, as well as clothes that may be contaminated, in hot water. Please note: it cannot be treated with insecticides together with furniture.
- Remove other family members and pets from the premises. This rule should be followed even if you use folk remedies for bullying. (more details about anti-bedbug products)
Important: before you start working with any chemicals, you need to take care of personal protective equipment. At home, it is mandatory to use a respirator, gloves, and goggles. All this is necessary in order to protect the skin and mucous membranes from harmful effects, on which chemical burns from insecticides may remain.
Only by following all the above rules can you be well prepared for further processing of the room. It can be done using various means.
General recommendations
Bedbugs react to sudden changes in temperature. In winter, you can open windows and doors and ventilate the room. Or take mattresses, bed linen, pillows, carpets, etc. outside for a couple of hours in severe frost.
For this, the recommended temperature is less than -25 0C. Extreme heat also kills bedbugs. Things are left in direct sunlight. The temperature outside is from 40 0C.
Another method is steam treatment. Apply locally, suitable for furniture. You can use a steam generator or steam cleaner. Bed linen can be boiled in water. Boiling water is also used to water bedbug nests.
Features of self-baiting bedbugs
The difficulty of calling highly qualified specialists is obvious: lack of funds. Trained people sometimes demand excessive amounts from apartment owners for their services. Requests often do not correspond to the size of wallets, so such intervention is refused.
The results of their work, of course, are extremely positive, but the financial factor takes the cake. However, one should not despair. Killing bedbugs at home doesn’t mean washing the floors, but for humans everything is doable. Note that it is quite possible to achieve similar productivity by cleaning the room from arthropods yourself.
Here are the advantages of this approach:
- A person is free to choose how much money to spend on an event.
- There is no risk of damaging household appliances due to carelessness (unless your own hands fail).
- Time is at your disposal.
So let’s focus on the independent “rite of residential exorcism.” Speaking of sacred...
