Adding fabric to the cuffs
Lengthening with cuffs is the best option for solving the problem of how to lengthen the bottom of men's jeans and trousers for boys. This method allows you to make cuffs of different acceptable widths.
For this part, a fabric similar to the material used to make the item is suitable.
Printed fabric is used to lengthen the jeans of teenagers or young people who prefer to stand out from others.
To the measured circumference of the bottom of the trouser leg, add 2 cm for the seams and calculate the length of the cuff (usually 5-6 cm), then duplicate the element with non-woven fabric. Having sewed one section of the part to the wrong side of the trouser leg, make an edging stitch along the cuff. Iron the second edge 0.5-1 cm, place it on the face of the base material, and stitch it. Finish with heat treatment.
When selecting material for extension, you should exclude the use of knitwear. It doesn't stretch the same as denim. Also, fabric that fades is not suitable for work.
Secret cuff on stretch jeans
The tape is attached to the wrong side of the trousers, and the resulting double section of the cuff must be turned onto the front side of the trousers. The easiest way to secure the cuff is with a hand stitch, just make sure that the threads are not visible on the front side. For example, we took measurements - the required length of the jeans is 115 cm, and the trousers (with the hem cut) are 111 cm (of which minus 1 cm for the seam), which means that a strip 10 cm high is needed to fold it in half. In this way, you can periodically update your jeans, and a woman’s item can be lengthened with a dense mesh or openwork. However, you can correct the situation in a simple and quite effective way, without resorting to cutting and sewing. Turn the overhanging seam allowance over to the right side of the jeans and sew it by hand with a blind stitch, or sew it on with a sewing machine.
From cotton fabric, cut out two identical rectangular pieces with a width equal to the width of the jeans along the bottom edge with an allowance of 1 cm. By the way, it is the finishing stitch that sometimes spoils the appearance of the belt, especially if a contrasting thread is used for finishing. Place the bottom edge of the trouser tape (it has a thickening) to the chalk line and sew the tape on the sewing machine with two lines, as shown in this photo. The same can be said about seamless methods, where ordinary water is used to increase the height of the product. To lengthen your jeans by about 2 cm, you can use the seamless methods described below.
Changing a Hem Seam
The easiest way to lengthen jeans is to change the factory hem seam. This procedure can be done independently at home. To do this you will need scissors, chalk or pencil, thread and a needle. It is recommended to do the stitching on a sewing machine, this will make it smoother and less noticeable. But, if there is no such equipment, then you can stitch the product using a thin needle.
- Turn the garment inside out.
- Find the factory seam on them and open it using scissors or a sharp knife. This must be done extremely carefully so as not to damage the material.
- Remove the threads from both sides of the product and straighten it in the place where the seam was.
- Iron each leg of the jeans thoroughly. It is better to use an iron with a steam function for this purpose, this will help mask the seam more effectively.
- Try the jeans on yourself and mark the new length. This can be done with chalk or a simple pencil.
- Make a seam according to the new marking by folding the edge of the trouser leg or sewing it onto a special trouser tape.
After finishing the job, iron the jeans again and try them on yourself. The advantage of this method is simplicity. In addition, if you were unable to achieve the desired length the first time, you can carefully remove the seam and reposition it.
If you use braid for hemming, do not sew it to the very bottom of the pant leg. There should be 5 - 5.5 mm left from the hem or cut line to it.

How to make jeans longer with a fabric insert
It's a good idea to lengthen your jeans by 5 or even more cm by inserting a piece of other fabric. It can be denim material or thin fabric of one or the other with trousers in a tone. The width of the insert must match the dimensions of the trouser leg. The length is selected depending on the required height.
The jeans are turned inside out and the seam is ripped out on the side to the place where the insert material will be located. The pant leg is cut.

The fabric is sewn to both parts of the leg and connected to the side seam. Similar actions are carried out with the second leg. The finished product is ironed with a steam or regular iron through gauze.
How to lengthen children's jeans
The most interesting and creative process for remaking things is extending the life of children's clothing. Children grow up quickly, durable, high-quality denim material does not have time to wear out and looks good.
To lengthen children's jeans, original inserts are made from bright fabrics
All known methods are suitable for lengthening children's jeans:
- original inserts made of bright cotton, woolen fabrics, openwork, lace and decorative ribbons;
- cuffs of different colors;
- reducing hems without adding material and sewing contrasting or similar fabrics;
- changing the width of the waistband or adding an insert in the waistband area.
The methods are suitable for both girls and boys. The difference is that it is better to lengthen children's jeans for boys with plain or checkered fabrics, and for girls with colored ones.
Important! When choosing materials, preference is given to natural, soft, non-fading fabrics.
Inserts are made in places free from pockets and applications that do not create inconvenience for the child. Highly stretchable knitted fabrics, which look sloppy in places where they are seamed with jeans, are unsuitable for inserts.

The fashion for rolled up jeans or other pants appeared relatively recently, approximately in the 90s of the last century in America. Until this time, cuffs on jeans served more of a function of keeping them clean from dirt or saving them from the heat by making shorts out of jeans. They also rolled up their jeans when riding a bike. You've probably had to catch a sprocket on your bicycle more than once with your jeans while pedaling.
Features of lengthening jeans
In order to properly lengthen jeans with your own hands and not spoil the item, you need to take into account the properties of the material and the features of its processing. A small violation will lead to final damage to the item and the inability to restore it later. To get started, you need to prepare all the tools and materials:
- scissors, needles and pins;
- high-quality threads that match the color of the main fabric;
- chalk or soap for marking;
- tape measure;
- extension material.
The following tips will help you successfully transform your favorite item and make your jeans a little longer:
- Before work, trousers must be washed and dried thoroughly;
- thin fabrics are easier to sew onto jeans, so it’s better to choose them for inserts;
- for thick denim, you cannot use material that is too light to lengthen the pants, as the contrast will be too noticeable;
- when sewing the inserts, you must ensure that the material does not tighten the trouser leg;
- the fabric for the inserts must match the material in terms of stretch level, then the updated product will look neat and beautiful;
- You need to start working after trying on the trousers with shoes in order to correctly choose the optimal length.
Features of lengthening jeans for men
The most suitable way to lengthen men's jeans is to sew on a cuff made of a different material.
Not many representatives of the stronger sex consider it appropriate to use lace or bright fabric with a floral print, which is acceptable when working with children's trousers. Also, teenagers and young people who want to look unusually stylish at the same time do not refuse such cuffs.
For more reserved men, a companion fabric that matches the quality and texture of the fabric would be more appropriate. The cuff can also be contrasting in color; a cuff made of checkered or striped fabric looks original.
We suggest you familiarize yourself with what to do in order for jeans to fit correctly
Operating procedure
- A large container (baby bath, bathtub, large, etc.) is filled with warm water and baby shampoo (1 cap) is added.
- Jeans are completely immersed in water and left in it for at least 0.5 hours.
- After this, the pants are taken out of the container and wait a while for the water to drain. There is no need to squeeze!
- Remaining moisture is removed by rolling the jeans in a large terry towel. The pants are rolled up with a tight roller along the length of the legs, pressing on them so that the water is absorbed into the towel. The procedure is repeated several times, replacing the wet towel with a dry one.
- The remaining wet jeans are laid out freely on dry terry cloth - a sheet or towel. Methodically, carefully, but they stretch the legs. The work is done gradually, along the entire length, starting from the waistline, moving down.
- Having stretched the material as much as possible, proceed to drying. Jeans are dried by hanging vertically.
Preliminary stage
You need to prepare for work by checking that you have everything you need. In addition to a sewing machine (and an overlocker if possible), when lengthening jeans you will need:
- Needles of different sizes and pins for basting and joining materials.
- Matching thread color and quality.
- Scissors.
- The material for marking fabric is chalk or a small piece of soap.
- Measuring tools: measuring tape, ruler, square.
- Material for lengthening (denim, lace, cotton, etc.) and for processing (trouser tape).
Edge Length Adjustment
The method will lengthen the jeans by using hem fabric. This way it is possible to make the trouser legs longer by a maximum of 2.5 cm. The work is carried out on washed and dried trousers. It is permissible to rip the hem before washing the trousers or after this process.
The threads from the seam are carefully removed.
The whole process consists of the following steps:
- dampen the bottom of the trousers and iron them so as to make the fold invisible;
- cut out 2 ribbons 4 cm wide along the transverse thread of fabric;
- align the elements with their upper sides, place a long piece of tape on the bottom of the trouser leg, and stitch after basting. Fold back and iron the seam;
- unscrew the sewn tape, as with the usual processing of the bottom of the item. Baste the formed hem and sew it by hand so that the seam is not visible from the outside of the product.
Cuffs on jeans: design options
There are two ways to sew cuffs:
We'll show you the second way so you can wear your pants in different ways.
You should select the finished width of the lapel in advance. Cuffs can be sewn only for straight-cut trousers, whose width at the bottom (15-20 cm to the floor) does not change. Please note that for skinny jeans made of stretch fabric, the cuffs should also be sewn from knitted fabric, otherwise your legs won’t fit in them!
Let's move on to cutting and sewing!
Uncover
We made the cuffs with a finished width of 5-7 cm, and the height of the cut piece should be 2 times greater + 3 cm and 2 cm for allowances. The length of the parts should be equal to the width of the bottom of the trousers plus 2 cm for allowances.
Progress
Fold the cuff pieces right sides inward, in half. Stitch and iron seam allowances to one side.
Iron on the wrong side 1 cm from each edge.
Turn the pants inside out. Place the cuff with the wrong side inward, aligning its seam with one of the seams of the trouser leg. In this case, the cuff allowance should be directed in the opposite direction from the jeans allowance. Pin the cuff as shown in the photo near the hem.
Sew the cuff to the hem using a blind stitch. Sew the cuff along the seam to the seam allowance of the trousers in the same way. grab on the opposite seam allowance and along the entire upper edge of the cuff, grabbing 1 thread of the trouser leg.
Turn right side out 2-3 cm, then fold again.

It's easier with girls
The question of how to lengthen children's jeans arises before parents with enviable regularity. It is natural for a child to grow, and often this happens very abruptly and unexpectedly for mom and dad.
In addition to the pleasant feeling that the baby has become a little more mature, the growth process also leaves an unpleasant aftertaste in the soul, and after such physiological processes there is nothing left in the wallet at all. The matter, however, is quite fixable.
Lengthening jeans for girls is as easy as shelling pears; fortunately, there are simply an incredible amount of ideas for this. Here are just a few of the most popular and inexpensive:
- the trouser legs can be ripped open and a fringe can be made from the frayed seam;
- a cute frill made of colorful fabric or a lace ruffle sewn to the legs will make the trousers exclusive and not short;
- You can lengthen the pants not only along the bottom edge - an insert of lace or fabric placed in the knee area looks very impressive and aesthetically pleasing, in addition, thanks to this trick it is very easy to get rid of scuffs or holes formed as a result of falls or crawling.
The last option is a godsend not only for mothers of girls; fixing boys’ jeans in this way is also not difficult.
The easiest way
So, if the problem with short pants is obvious, it needs to be solved. The most basic way is to try using an existing resource. What does it mean? To begin with, you can rip open the existing hem and try to solve the existing problem with little effort. Perhaps the seam hides the missing 1.5-2 cm in the length of the trouser legs. This option is good for new jeans, because worn and washed pants wear out quite quickly at the bottom and after their bottom edge is ripped open, all the fraying is maximally manifested.
How to lengthen jeans as easily as possible? In cases where simple steaming followed by minimal hemming of the cut is not enough (or this option is impossible due to the severe wear of the pants), you can use another option. To do this, you need to add the missing length to them, choosing the most similar fabric. Such a cuff can be taken from other trousers by cutting off their length, in which case you don’t even have to work hard, the main thing is to sew the cuts together symmetrically. You can use a piece of fabric, but experts recommend cutting the pattern on the bias, since jeans are cut in production this way.
With finishing
Pants can be made longer using trim. This is especially true if you are thinking about how to lengthen women's jeans. For this we use:
- lace or lace ribbon;
- bright stripes of plain, printed fabric in checkered, striped, floral or polka dot patterns;
- wide braid;
- fringe;
- frill.

It’s easy to choose a trim to match the denim or contrast it to add “length” to the legs, turning the pants into eye-catching and stylish ones. Moreover, the first 3 types of finishing can be used at the bottom when the jeans are hemmed at the factory, but then the seam turns out to be thick.
Connecting the finishing strip to the embroidered hem of the trouser hem allows for a neat seam to be achieved. In addition to the fringe and frill, the rest of the trim is also inserted into the legs in the area where they are cut below or above the knee.
The method is suitable for those who are wondering how to lengthen children's jeans for a girl. However, it is important that the width of the trim matches the width of the trouser leg.
To get rid of the threads used to hem the hem, use small scissors with sharp ends.
Otherwise, the jointing will end with unplanned holes.
Ways to lengthen classic men's and women's trousers
Classic products require the use of more restrained lengthening techniques.
It is necessary to make maximum use of the depth of the bottom hem without using other material, the height of the lapel:
- The bottom seam is ripped out, carefully ironed and a new fold is made to a shallower depth. In this way you can lengthen the product by 1-2 cm.
- If the depth of the bottom hem is insignificant, a trouser tape that is sewn to the bottom edge of the trouser leg will help to add 1-2 cm. It will act as a hem.
- Trousers with a lapel can be lengthened by reducing the height of the lapel, or removed by moving the fold line to the desired size.
- If you have leftover fabric from sewing the same product, you can lengthen the trousers by adding a simple or double lapel, which will hide the seaming line of the parts.
These methods are used for both male and female models. You can also lengthen women's trousers at home using decorative elements: lace, braid, thin fabrics to match the product.
Six ways to create stylish cuffs on jeans
For decades now, jeans have been one of the most popular items in both men's and women's wardrobes. Distinguished by its unconditional convenience, and therefore loved by many, universal clothing has undergone many changes. If previously jeans were rolled up because of their length, now it is a fashionable feature and an original style.
To create an original look, you can even roll up jeans of the perfect length. There are several ways to create stylish cuffs on jeans that will look great with a simple T-shirt, or with a smart blouse, or with a wide shirt in a men's style.
Skinny with narrow cuffs
Narrow cuffs on tight jeans visually lengthen your legs and reveal your ankles, which looks very attractive and sexy. Rolled-up skinnies go perfectly with both flats and heels.
To make a narrow cuff on a skinny, you need to fold the jeans one or two centimeters outward twice and carefully smooth the resulting cuffs with your hands.
Straight-leg jeans with wide cuffs
Wide cuffs look great on straight, loose-fitting jeans. To make a nice wide cuff, you need to fold the jeans 4-5 centimeters outward twice, and then carefully smooth it out with your hands.
Hidden cuff for stretch jeans
For stretch jeans, hidden cuffs are great when the fabric is folded inward. To make an inner cuff on stretch jeans, you need to fold the edge of the leg outward, iron it thoroughly and carefully fold it inward.
