Vodka, formalin solution, alum and water
Medical alcohol, like vodka, has bactericidal properties.
This means that these liquids can neutralize the smell of sweat from growing bacteria on clothing. It is especially important to carry out such cleaning in the armpit areas, because... It is in these places that unpleasant odors most often accumulate. For processing we will need the clothes themselves, alcohol and an iron.
Fill the item in the armpit area with alcohol, not sparing the latter, and let the material dry completely. As the alcohol evaporates, the smell will gradually disappear. As soon as the clothes are dry again, take the iron and steam the treated area with it. As a result, the clothes are ready for use.
A mixture of the following ingredients will help you easily cope with the problem: vodka, formaldehyde solution, alum and water.
- We take regular vodka. You don’t have to buy an expensive one; you can choose one of the cheap ones for the cleaning process. Pour it into a convenient container with high sides.
- Add 1 tablespoon of formaldehyde solution, 1 tablespoon of alum and 50 grams of water to the vodka.
- When this is done, mix everything thoroughly to a uniform consistency.
- The next stage of work is to apply the prepared mixture to the armpit area of our foul-smelling clothes. To do this, dip a cotton pad into the solution and apply circular movements with light pressure to the desired areas of the fabric.
After this, we rinse the item in running water, check the result and, if necessary, reapply the product, slightly rubbing it into the fibers. When we are 100% satisfied with the result, we dry the clothes and continue to use them.
Why might a jacket smell?
Natural leather material has the ability to absorb any foreign odors well. The most common unpleasant odors are: sweat, cigarette smoke, mustiness, and the smell of food if, for example, a jacket was hanging on a hanger near the kitchen. Often the product may smell like second-hand goods.
Each situation requires its own approach. Products that help cope with bad odors must be selected individually.
Bad aromas have varying degrees of absorption and difficulty in eliminating. That is why any one substance cannot be universal for all occasions. Let’s look at this in detail today. But first, let’s find out what kind of products are used in the fight against odors ingrained into leather products.
Features of leather products
Leather material is very dense in its structure, which is practical, since it is difficult to tear high-quality leather, but it also causes a number of maintenance difficulties. Leather outerwear easily absorbs various unpleasant odors, which are not easy to remove. Often, leather material, after prolonged use, develops abrasions that need to be painted over with special paint, and it is best to do this by dry cleaning. It is recommended to regularly soak leather products with special moisturizers.
The humidity of a leather product is directly related to its increased absorption of unpleasant odors. Leather items should always be thoroughly dried.
Gasoline and ammonia
Regular table salt can easily solve the problem.
To do this, dissolve 1 tablespoon of salt in a glass of water. The water should have a temperature no lower than room temperature. If we want to get rid of stains and the smell of our sweat glands on woolen or denim clothes, we make a more concentrated solution. Add not one, but two tablespoons of rock salt to a glass of water.
- Strain the solution through gauze and apply it, moistening a cotton swab, to sweat stains in the armpits. When applying, we try to gently rub the saline solution so that it penetrates as deeply as possible into the fibers of linen, viscose, silk or cotton.
- Then we leave all these things for about 10-15 minutes, during which the salt will draw out the unpleasant odor.
- After this, we wash the clothes in running water, dry them, iron them if necessary and continue to use them for their intended purpose.
If the smell of sweat on a T-shirt, shirt or pullover has recently appeared and has not yet penetrated deeply into the fibers of the fabric, lemon peels will help fight it. They will instantly draw out the unpleasant aroma without leaving a trace of it.
To do this, you need to cut off the zest from the lemon. It will be more convenient to work in a large piece, so we try not to make it too small. Now we take clothes and rub the armpit area with the prepared zest. After this, rinse the item in running water, dry it and enjoy the result.
Another helper is citric acid.
So, take 2 teaspoons of citric acid and dilute it in 100 ml of water. Mix thoroughly and apply to sweat stains on your favorite item. Now let it rest without touching it for 1 hour.
After this, rinse in warm water and, if necessary, wash in a washing machine in the standard mode for the given fabric from which the salvaged clothing is made.
If we work with woolen fabric, then the prepared solution must have a higher concentration. In this case, take 250 ml of water and add 1 tablespoon of citric acid to it. After treating the clothes with it, leave it for 2 hours. After that, we wash it in the machine, dry it and continue to wear it.
Clothes made from light fabric can be saved by using a mixture of salt and ammonia. This method is not recommended for colored items, because... ammonia can discolor bright colors.
To implement our plan, take a glass of water, fill it with water and add 1 tablespoon of salt. Mix the salt thoroughly and add 1 teaspoon of ammonia to the resulting brine solution. After mixing the third ingredient with the previous two, we take out a clean cotton pad or a piece of soft white fabric.
When the 100% result becomes visible, you need to rinse the treated item and leave it to dry in the open air.
A reliable remedy for solving this problem is a mixture of lemon juice and soda.
- To prepare the solution, you need to take a fresh lemon, cut it and squeeze it into a small container. The amount of juice we need for work should be 2 tablespoons.
- Then you need to add 1 tablespoon of vinegar to the squeezed juice and mix thoroughly.
- After this, use a clean cotton pad soaked in the resulting solution to carefully treat the axillary areas of the clothing until stains and odors completely disappear from them. Now all that remains is to rinse the clothes, dry them and continue to use them.
It is recommended to use gasoline on denim or any other items with a rough structure. It is also better to wear latex gloves before starting work to protect the skin on your hands from corrosion. When all the recommendations have been taken into account, we begin to implement our plans.
We prepare cotton pads, household gasoline and ammonia. We soak the wheels in gasoline and carefully wipe off the yellow sweat stains on our clothes. We begin to work from the edges, reaching in a spiral to the center of the contamination. At the same time, under no circumstances do we put pressure on clothing. Otherwise, gasoline will penetrate deep into the fibers of the fabric, which can lead to its damage.
We suggest you familiarize yourself with How to remove chewing gum from clothes effectively without damaging the item
After treatment, take a clean cotton pad and soak it in ammonia. Then we process the same places. This is done to remove gasoline particles from clothing. In this form, leave the item alone for 60 minutes.
After this, wash the product in the machine as usual with the addition of conditioner to get rid of the strong smell of gasoline. Then we dry the clothes, iron them and use them for their intended purpose.
How to remove the smell of sweat from a leather jacket and restore freshness to the product
Leather jackets have not gone out of fashion for several decades.
In addition to a stylish look, such clothes are practical. It will last a long time and will have a presentable appearance. But what if this item of clothing “smells” bad? Let's talk about how to remove the smell of sweat from a leather jacket. Hyperhidrosis is a common problem among all population groups. Although sweating is a normal physiological process, over time, leather products become saturated with various odors much more than clothing made from other fabrics.
Eliminating odors is quite difficult and is one of the biggest problems with leather clothing. Indeed, in some cases it is almost impossible to remove the ingrained stench of sweat.
In this article, we’ll look at how you can get rid of the smell of sweat on leather products, and also share the secrets of dealing with unpleasant odors emanating from them.
How to remove the smell of sweat from a leather jacket: proven methods
Personal hygiene rules will help minimize the accumulation of sweat secretion on leather clothing. If the problem already exists, then the following methods will help deal with it.
Dry cleaning
The method is quite expensive, but 100% effective. If your leather jacket has unsightly circles under the arms and an unpleasant odor emanates from it that you can’t handle on your own, dry cleaning is the best solution. It will help your leather product find a “second” clean life.
Vinegar
Vinegar has proven itself well as a “killer” of unpleasant odors. You can use it in two ways:
- Surfaces from which an unpleasant odor emanates (armpits) should be treated with table vinegar. Leave the product for several hours, then wipe the skin with soapy water. Rinse everything off with a cloth in clean water.
- Vinegar can be used not only in “direct contact”; its vapors do an excellent job of eliminating the smell of sweat. To clean, fill the tub or tub with water; it should be hot. Add 1 tbsp to it. table vinegar. Place the leather jacket directly above the steaming water. After 3 hours, the smell of sweat will disappear, and the vinegar aroma can be removed by regular ventilation.
Baking soda
Another product loved by housewives because of its ability to remove unpleasant odors. To eliminate the aroma of sweat using baking soda, you can use the following methods:
- Turn the jacket inside out and sprinkle baking soda on the “smelling” areas. Lightly wet with water and rub the powder into the product. When the moisture dries, shake off any remaining baking soda from the fabric.
- Place the inside out leather jacket in a container (this could be a basin, cardboard box, etc.). Cover the product with baking soda and forget about it for 5 days. After pulling out, shake off the remaining powder and ventilate if necessary.
Lemon acid
To remove an unpleasant odor from a leather jacket, squeeze out the juice of one lemon and dilute it with the same amount of water. Using a spray bottle, spray the resulting liquid onto the entire product or contaminated areas. Wait 3–5 hours. Wipe the problem areas with a cloth previously soaked in soapy water, then with a clean one.
Flavoring with natural products
Another option for removing the smell of sweat from a leather jacket, which is actively used by modern housewives, is to neutralize the sweat with other pleasant notes. “Aroma treatments” are used exclusively for dark leather jackets, since light-colored items can leave stains.
- Orange. Remove the peel from the fruit and wipe the top of the product with it. Particular attention should be paid to the areas under the arms. The orange will add aroma to the skin, while absorbing the unpleasant odor.
- Coffee. Dry ground coffee should be applied to contaminated areas. Wait 3–5 hours and shake off the remaining powder.
Hydrogen peroxide
Option for light colored leather jackets. You will need 3% hydrogen peroxide. Use 3-4 tbsp per glass of water. l. peroxide. Use a sponge to treat areas with an unpleasant odor and let dry. Reapply the mixture on top. Continue the procedure up to 3–5 layers.
Ammonia
For a composition that will combat unpleasant aroma, you need 1 tsp. dilute ammonia in 1 tbsp. soapy liquid. Using a sponge, apply the composition to the “smelling” areas and leave for an hour. After the expiration date, wipe the surfaces with clean water and allow to dry. Leather items after this treatment should not be hung in direct sunlight.
A radical approach - home washing
It is known that it is not recommended to wash leather items, since excess moisture causes things to lose their shape and their presentability. But when there is no other choice, washing becomes the last saving solution. To wash a leather jacket yourself, you can resort to two methods:
- Manual. The jacket must be washed in warm water, and to eliminate the smell, add 1 tbsp. table vinegar. Soak the item for 8–12 hours. Squeeze and dry. Then wash by hand using liquid powder and baking soda (0.5 cups).
- Machine washable. If you don’t want to wash by hand, then a washing machine will come to the rescue. The mode must be selected “delicate wash” or “hand wash”. The temperature should not be more than 30 C. Liquid powder will best cope with the task of removing unpleasant aroma. Skip the spin cycle.
Drying leather products is carried out in a dark place. To prevent the jacket from losing its shape, place it on a terry towel. Place dry towels inside and also in the sleeves. When most of the moisture has been removed, hang the jacket on a hanger and dry it completely.
How to remove sweat odor from a leather jacket without washing
In addition to the methods described above for eliminating an unpleasant odor, you can use methods that will teach you how to remove the smell of sweat from a leather jacket without washing.
- If you just notice an unpleasant odor coming from your jacket, the first correct decision would be to ventilate the product in the fresh air. The minimum that an item should be aired is 24 hours. The main thing is to control the weather conditions and not let your jacket get wet in the rain. The procedure is carried out as follows: turn the jacket inside out, hang it on a hanger and send it outside to a well-ventilated place.
- To prevent the smell of sweat from “stretching” onto the skin, you can sew armpit linings on the inside of the jacket, which can be steamed and washed if necessary. This way, the item will remain fresh, and excess moisture released by the armpits will be absorbed into special double linings. 3. Use of newspapers. This method is quite effective, but it is better to use it after removing the “aroma” using any of the above methods. After cleaning, wrap the product in newspapers and leave for 2–5 days. The newsprint will absorb any remaining moisture as well as any remaining odor.
To forget about the problem of the smell of sweat emanating from a leather jacket, you need to follow basic rules of personal hygiene, use antiperspirants that will help minimize the release of sweat secretion and mask the trail that appears. Don’t wear your clothes to unpresentable circles under your armpits, change your clothes more often. In addition to the aesthetic component, this will help extend the life of your items.

Lemon acid
Boric acid is an aggressive agent, so it should not be used on clothes made from delicate fabrics. You can permanently damage an item. If the clothing consists of coarser and more unpretentious material, then this method suits us.
But it’s better to protect yourself and test the effect of boric acid on an inconspicuous area of the item. To do this, dilute boric acid in an amount of 10 g in 1 liter of water. Stir thoroughly and perform a test.
If the outcome is favorable, apply the solution to areas of clothing soaked in sweat and leave it alone for 30 minutes. After the time has passed, wash the clothes in the usual way, dry them, iron them if necessary and enjoy their fresh look and smell.
Basic methods
To remove the smell of sweat from outerwear, express methods for getting rid of “odors” will come to the rescue.
Here is one of them:
- Turn your leather jacket inside out and lightly dampen the lining in the armpits and back area using a spray bottle.
- Fill the wetted areas with baking soda and rub it well with a brush.
- Wait 30 minutes and remove any remaining baking soda using a dry brush.
- If necessary, dry previously wet areas using a hairdryer, without bringing the device close to the product.
After this manipulation, the mildly repulsive odor will be completely removed, and the more persistent odor will lose its harshness almost completely.
Lemon acid
To rid a leather jacket of corrosive tobacco odor, you must:
- Dilute dry citric acid in water using a 1:2 ratio.
- Pour the resulting solution into a spray bottle.
- Hang the jacket on a hanger.
- Generously spray it outside and inside with water and citric acid.
- Leave the product alone for 2 hours.
After this, you need to make a weak soap solution that will help remove the lemon. It is enough to soak a foam sponge in it and quickly wipe the item of clothing, so that after drying you can enjoy the real smell of leather, not sweat or tobacco.
Vinegar
It is no secret that ordinary table vinegar is not only the main “acidifier” of some dishes, but also one of the best helpers in removing unpleasant odors. However, to use it to rid a material such as leather of the smell of sweat or, for example, cigarettes, you need to put in a little effort.
To begin, take a trempel, which can be either plastic or wooden, 9% vinegar, a jacket and go to the bathroom.
- Pour enough hot water into the bath so that it rises about 10 cm.
- Add 250-300 ml of vinegar to the water.
- Hang your jacket over your swimsuit.
- Leave it in this position for 1.5-2 hours.
After this, you will need to wipe off the drops that formed on the jacket after being in the home “steam room”, dry it on the balcony or in another well-ventilated place.
Fighting cigarette odor
People who smoke know first-hand what the problem of smoky items is. Outerwear suffers most often.
Removing the smell of tobacco smoke from a jacket made of real leather or leatherette is not so difficult. One of the listed options will come to the rescue.
Lemon juice
How to remove odor using this product? Lemon juice should be used dissolved with water, in a ratio of 1 to 1. The mixture is poured into a mechanical sprayer, and the outerwear item is well sprayed inside and out. Particular attention should be paid to the sleeves and collar part.
For convenience, the jacket can be hung on hangers. After 2-3 hours, the outer material is washed with a sponge with soapy water, and then with just clean water. After this, dry the jacket with a dry towel.
Citrus
Fruits such as orange, grapefruit, and lemon are excellent odor neutralizers. You can also use fresh citrus peels to combat tobacco. But this method can only be used on dark materials, in order to avoid staining light skin.
How to remove the smell of cigarette smoke using citrus peels? Just rub the peel well on the area of the collar, sleeves, and possibly underarms to neutralize all excess. Let it dry for about 15 minutes, and then wipe the jacket with a damp sponge and dry with a dry cloth.
Natural coffe
How else can you get rid of the smell so that your jacket doesn’t smell like cigarettes? It is no secret that coffee not only has a pleasant aroma and works as a flavoring agent, but also has sorbent properties. It perfectly absorbs any fragrance.
This method will take some time, but it's worth it. All you need to do is find a large bag that will fit the jacket. We fold and place the product in it, then pour in ½ cup of natural ground coffee and tie the bag tightly. You will have to wait about 2 days, but the product will no longer smell of tobacco, but will acquire a pleasant coffee aroma.
We suggest you familiarize yourself with Washing terry towels at home
You can also try using external washing of an outer wardrobe item with water and a laundry rinsing concentrate. This product not only gives a pleasant aroma, but is also able to remove unpleasant odors.
It is enough to dilute the substance with warm water (1/3 cap of product per 1 liter of water), stir well and wipe the most odorous areas. Leave for 10 minutes and wipe the jacket with a clean damp sponge.
What else can I do to remove the smell?
- If there is a slight absorption of sweat into the lining of the jacket, you can gently stretch the fabric without touching the skin. If possible, place plastic film between the leather and fabric parts of the product before washing. This will additionally protect the skin from getting wet.
- Treat areas of sweat contact with a vinegar solution. Table 6% or diluted vinegar essence is suitable. Do not wet the product excessively. Strong wetting of the skin disrupts the structure and leads to deformation.
- Preparing homemade compositions based on essential oils will prevent sweat odor from being absorbed into the skin of the product. You need to dilute a couple of spoons of liquid soap or baby shavings in a small amount of warm water. Add lemon, orange or other citrus essential oil. Stir the mixture until a stable foam appears and treat the jacket inside and out. After this, wipe the jacket with a dry soft cloth. Dry in a well-ventilated place.
- Bacteria give the smell to sweat. To get rid of them, it is necessary to treat the product with disinfecting compounds. Regular baking soda perfectly kills pathogenic bacteria. Prepare a paste of several tablespoons of baking soda and water. Carefully process the inside of the leather product. Dry and brush off any remaining mixture with a brush.
- Lemon juice diluted with half and half water will help remove the smell of sweat. The leather is processed from the reverse side and dried.
- A few drops of pharmaceutical ammonia diluted in a glass of water work well to eliminate unpleasant odors. You can treat both the inside of the leather and the lining with this composition. The product must be dried. The smell of ammonia disappears easily along with the unpleasant odor of sweat.
Proper use of leather products and timely drying and ventilation of capricious material will help avoid the appearance of extraneous unpleasant odors.
Even products made from natural materials sooner or later lose their attractiveness. Traces from rain or food can ruin the appearance of the jacket. Basic procedures will help you get rid of them.
A leather jacket will inevitably develop dirt that cannot be wiped off with a wet cloth.
First you need to find out what material the clothes are made of - natural or artificial. You can check this by looking at the following characteristics:
- Suede fabric is always sewn on the reverse side of a leather product. You can find an area on the jacket to look beneath the surface of the leather material. If there is fabric underneath, the item is not natural.
- You can use the old, well-known method: set fire to an area of skin hidden from view. When burned, genuine leather gives off a special, recognizable unpleasant aroma. Leatherette, unlike it, will burn quickly.
- It is dangerous to wash a leatherette product – it may not survive it. But even natural items should be washed carefully, taking into account the general recommendations. Using strong detergents can permanently damage the product.
Despite the apparent complexity of the problem, there is actually far more than one way to remove it. Choose the one below that is most suitable for you.
Lemon water:
- Make this solution: natural lemon juice and water in equal proportions.
- Use a spray bottle to spray the entire item or just problem areas.
- Leave the jacket for a couple of hours.
- Wipe the leather item with a damp towel and soapy suds. Remove the soap with a clean, damp cloth.
Vinegar:
- Treat the bad-smelling areas of the item with vinegar and leave for a couple of hours.
- Wipe the surface with a damp towel and soapy water.
- Remove any remaining soap with a clean, damp towel.
Vinegar fumes:
- Fill the bath with hot water and add enough vinegar to it so that its aroma is intense enough.
- Hang your jacket on hangers directly above the bathtub.
- Close the bathroom door and leave for a couple of hours.
- Afterwards, let the jacket dry. Don't worry - the smell of vinegar disappears quite quickly.
Baking soda:
- Apply lightly moistened baking soda to the odorous areas on the underside of your leather jacket.
- When the baking soda dries, simply shake off any remaining residue.
You can get rid of the smell of leather products and remove unpleasant odors from a leather jacket of other origin using even simpler methods.
It is highly not recommended to wash leather products - excess moisture can cause them to lose their shape, attractive appearance and even shrink. But if your wardrobe item has already had a long service life, this may be the only right solution to freshen it up.
- Fill a basin with warm water, add a glass of vinegar and soak your leather jacket in the resulting solution overnight.
- In the morning, lightly wring out the item and dry it.
- When the jacket is completely dry, wash it with liquid laundry detergent and half a glass of baking soda. Baking soda will help remove the vinegar smell.
Washing can also be done in a washing machine, but you should follow some recommendations:
- The washing mode should be delicate. In some washing machine models, this mode is called “hand wash”.
- The water temperature is not higher than 30 C.
- It is recommended to use liquid laundry detergent for delicate items.
- The spin should not exceed 300 revolutions, or even better, not use it at all.
- You can add heavy cream while rinsing. This will restore the loss of fat in the skin.
Actions after washing:
- Drying a leather jacket should be in a dark place. Place the product on a towel, also stuff dry towels into the sleeves and inside. When the water has drained and the jacket becomes damp, you can hang it on hangers and dry it that way.
- After washing, knead the dry item with your hands using cosmetic milk.
- Lubricate the entire surface of the material with glycerin. The jacket will absorb it for about 3 days - this is normal. But after this the skin will become smooth and soft. When the skin has sufficiently absorbed the glycerin, knead the skin with your hands again and remove excess glycerin with a soft towel.
You need to figure out how to get rid of the smell on a second-hand leather jacket. It is important to immediately note the fact that perfume or eau de toilette will not get rid of the unpleasant odor. And if they contain alcohol, they can ruin the appearance of a leather jacket, since when this substance is exposed to the surface of the leather, it can lose its color, begin to burst and be exposed to external influences. In order to eliminate negative odors, it is necessary to use only those products that have been tested by time.
Recently, shopping in second-hand stores has become quite common. This is due to a fairly large assortment and low prices. Things purchased in this way have a significant drawback - the smell of formaldehyde or methyl bromide, which is used to treat clothes before going on sale.

Killing the smell of sweat
Dealing with the smell of sweat can sometimes be even more difficult than the smell of tobacco smoke. But it is still possible to correct the situation. Other means may be suitable here.
Ammonia solution
Ammonia and water are what perfectly remove sweat odors from the lining of a leather jacket.
Dilute 2 tbsp. spoons of the substance in 0.5 liters of water, and thoroughly wipe the lining area in the collar and armpits. You can repeat the procedure 2-3 times. The pungent ammonia smell will quickly evaporate along with sweat.
You can also solve the problem of the sweaty smell of a leather jacket with the help of soda.
You need to turn the item inside out, dilute soda powder with water to the consistency of a thick paste, and treat the fabric in the armpit area.
You will have to leave the composition on the jacket until it dries completely, and after that it will be enough to simply shake off traces of soda.
Essential oil
Essential oils not only have a strong aroma, but also disinfectant properties. Therefore, you can also get rid of the stench of sweat with their help.
You will need to take any essential oil you like, preferably citrus or tea tree oil, drop 3-5 drops into a soap solution and wash all smelly areas of the product. You can also wipe the outside of the jacket; esters will not harm the natural material.
Table vinegar
A fairly common remedy is table vinegar. If you dilute it with water in a ratio of 1 to 1, you can easily get rid of unpleasant odors from sweat.
You can wash the armpit area with the solution and spray the entire lining with a spray bottle. When the material dries, the nasty spirit will not remain.
How to remove the smell of sweat from a leather jacket?
Leather is a very common material in our everyday life . It is used to make jackets, shoes, belts, bags, and upholstery for furniture... But nothing lasts forever. Over time, the skin begins to deteriorate, often from excessive moisture. She is also exposed to various odors: cigarette smoke, food aromas, perfume, sweat.
Leather products quickly absorb odor.
All of the above options cause discomfort. But fortunately, there is a solution to this problem. The main thing is to start with less strong detergents and gradually move on to more aggressive ones, provided that the odors still do not go away.
Preventing odors on leather products
To prevent unbearable sweat odors from appearing on your jacket, you just need to follow the usual rules of personal hygiene: deodorants and antiperspirants for the body, regularly changing clothes, taking a bath/shower. Try not to dress too warmly where it will be hot - dress according to the weather.
The first method is normal ventilation.
At the first appearance of the smell, the jacket should be ventilated.
- If the smell of sweat has just begun to appear and has not reached excessive activity, you can simply ventilate the product in clean air. You need to check the weather forecast; if there is no sign of rain and the weather is good outside, you can hang your jacket outside for 24 hours. Exposure to ultraviolet rays can help get rid of a variety of unpleasant odors. Be careful: rain can ruin the item.
- If an unpleasant odor appears on the furniture, you can try to solve this problem as well. Open the window/balcony wide, place the fan between the sofa and the window. Remove anything that will interfere with the air flow on the furniture.
The second method is expensive but easy
It is better not to wash outerwear in washing machines.
If you have the financial means, you can dry-clean your favorite leather goods, especially if they are too dirty or saturated with unpleasant odors.
But, fortunately, you can easily do without dry cleaning by cleaning everything at home using the most common technical liquids and detergents.
Method three - vinegar
Baking soda is the best helper in fighting stains.
This procedure must be carried out quite carefully so as not to risk the jacket.
- You need to pour a small amount of hot water into the bathtub, add one glass of vinegar to the water, and hang your leather jacket so that the steam directly hits it. By closing the bathroom door, prevent excess air from entering the jacket. After a few hours, the unpleasant smell of sweat on the jacket will disappear.
- You need to rub the areas of greatest sweating (armpits) with vinegar. You can do this with soap, but vinegar “lotions” are more effective. The main thing is not to overdo it with quantity.
Fourth – soda to the rescue
- Regular baking soda will help remove the smell of sweat from a leather jacket. You need to turn the product inside out and sprinkle it with soda. Moisten with water and rub in the mixture. Afterwards, dry the jacket. When dry, shake off the soda residue.
- Place leather items in a cardboard box. Sprinkle the surface with baking soda and do not touch it for five days. After the time has passed, take the clothes outside and shake off the soda. Jacket gets rid of odors.
Fifth method - lemon juice
You need to dilute lemon juice with water in a 1:1 ratio. Spray the entire jacket/separate areas with a spray bottle. After several hours, wipe the jacket with a cloth and soapy foam. Then rinse off the soap and wipe with a dry soft cloth.
Method number 6 - wiping
Brushes for suede.
- Use a soft brush designed for suede or leather to clean the entire surface of the product. Use a soft cloth for thin areas. This will remove the top contaminated layer and eliminate the smell.
- A soft cloth should be soaked in a special liquid to clean leather items. Professional products can be easily found in supermarkets, specialized leather stores or on the Internet. They do not need to be washed off, they will not worsen the overall condition of the item.
The seventh method is newspaper
This is more a way not to remove odors, but to store leather items. After the product is cleaned, it can be wrapped in newspaper and left for 2 days. The newspaper will help absorb excess moisture and pick up aromas. Regularly storing leather items in newspapers will help eliminate odors from painting.
Eighth – coffee
Ground coffee is good for removing sweat odor.
You can remove unpleasant aroma from your jacket using freshly ground coffee. All you have to do is generously sprinkle the product with coffee and after a day just shake out the jacket. It must be remembered that this method is absolutely not suitable for fair skin.
Ninth – orange
You need to peel 4 small oranges. Hang the jacket, rub the surface with the outside. This scent can easily overcome any unpleasant trail. This method is not suitable for light skin colors - red spots may remain!
The last one is secret
This trick can help prevent sweat from getting on your jacket. You need to sew double armpits onto the jacket. After some time, they can be easily torn off, washed and sewed back on. The jacket will remain unsaturated with sweat.
What to do to avoid spoiling leather items?
- do not leave your skin in the sun for more than eight hours, because the color may simply disappear;
- do not use bleaches - the unpleasant aroma will naturally go away, but the surface of the skin will be damaged;
- regularly wipe leather items with glycerin, cosmetic milk or egg white;
- if exposed to rain, wipe the jacket with a dry cloth, dry it, but not close to a heat source;
- do not use different solvents for cleaning, because this can cause the leather to become brittle and dry;
- do not wash leather products in the washing machine - they may not withstand it;
- Do not rub the skin too vigorously - it may become deformed.
Many people have a fear that they might somehow ruin their item; they need to apply the cleaning mixture to an inconspicuous small area and see how the skin reacts. Once you are sure that everything is in order, you can continue.

Shampoo for oily hair
Shampoo for oily hair can help cope with the problem. It's even better to take shampoo with the scent of menthol, lavender or other fresh additives. They will help eliminate sweat odor more thoroughly.
When starting to work, take the contaminated item and slightly moisten the problematic parts on it. Then generously rub them with shampoo and leave them alone for about 10-15 minutes. During this time, the shampoo will remove greasy particles from the fabric fibers at the stain site and neutralize the odor. After this, all that remains is to rinse the shampoo consistency from the clothes, dry them and iron them as necessary.
If the smell of sweat remains on clothes after washing
Fabric softeners and fabric softeners will quickly deal with the problem of unpleasant odors.
In the wardrobe of each of us there are many things made of synthetic materials. Namely, they absorb odors remarkably well and do not “let go” of them for a long time. It is enough to wear such clothes once, and you will already need to wash them. But it often happens that even this does not save you from the pungent aroma. How to remove the smell of sweat from clothes in such cases?
To avoid such unpleasant surprises after washing, you need to carry out the procedure correctly.
- Before washing soiled clothes, soak them in warm water for 45 minutes. Pre-soap under your arms with laundry soap. Add a little vinegar or soda to the water. You need to soak it separately, without mixing it with other clothes, otherwise the smell may be absorbed into other things.
- Before turning on the washing machine, add half a glass of 9% vinegar and 3 tablespoons of soda to it, namely to the drum.
- The amount of powder needs to be increased slightly.
- You can use oxygen bleach; you can also wash colored items with it.
- Use fabric softener.
- All washing machines have a pre-wash function. Use it, as it will help rid your clothes of unpleasant odors and heavy dirt.
- Dry washed items only in air.
We remove the smell of genuine leather, second-hand goods and mold
These types of odors are quite persistent and it is not so easy to get rid of them on your own. However, it's worth a try. As a last resort, you can always go to dry cleaning.
Ammonia
Ammonia will help remove odors such as mold, specific leather or second-hand ones only if you wipe the entire jacket with it on the outside and spray it on the inside.
You can also try soaking the item in a basin of water and ammonia for 15-20 minutes. The ammonia will quickly dissipate, there is no need to worry, and all other fragrances should disappear with it.
If a natural leather jacket suddenly acquires a musty smell after being stored in a closet for a long time, then only drying it in the heat on the balcony (but not in direct sunlight) and, of course, airing will help. Unfortunately, this method rarely helps with the smell of second hand goods.
Wash
Every owner of a leather jacket simply must remember that this product is prohibited from being machine washed! Otherwise, the material may become deformed and become thinner.
However, small “water treatments” will not harm such clothes, however, if you take the utmost care:
- Pour warm, slightly hot water into a basin.
- hand washing detergent in it
- Soak a clean foam sponge in the soapy water.
- Take the jacket in your hands.
- Begin to gently wash the lining.
So, you shouldn’t immediately go to the dry cleaner if your favorite leather jacket suddenly starts to “smell” differently than it should. After all, you can get rid of, for example, the smell of sweat or tobacco not only in specialized places, but also at home. In some cases, this won't even take much time.
Leather outerwear will decorate any wardrobe. It is convenient and practical to use. But often there is a need to remove the smell from a leather jacket, with which it is heavily saturated. To solve this problem, simple household remedies such as coffee, lemon, ammonia, ammonia, and soda are ideal.
Baking soda
An excellent solution in this situation can be dry cleaning of clothes using ordinary soda. To work, you need to choose a place in the house from which, after completing the process, you can easily remove traces of white soda powder. One option would be to use a washboard in the bathroom.
We take a blouse, T-shirt, jumper or other thing that we want to get rid of the smell. Open a box of baking soda. Sprinkle its contents evenly onto the armpit area. It is important that the soda forms a thin layer. Now gently rub the grains into the fibers of the fabric. You need to rub it in gently, without putting too much pressure on the material.
Professional products
Today, in almost any hardware store you can buy a cleaner for dermantine products. Carefully read the instructions of the purchased product to ensure that it is exactly suitable for a certain type of material. Modern professional products do not affect the color and shine of the product and do not cause any damage. They are applied using a cloth or, if the product is in the form of a spray, then by spraying.

An alternative replacement is shoe polish, suitable for treating bags, wallets, and linseed oil, more used for removing odors from clothes.
Store-bought odor neutralizers
Special products for removing various odors from the skin can be purchased today at any hardware store. Of course, these compounds are synthetic and are not cheap, but in some cases you cannot do without them.
It is recommended to use store-bought neutralizers only after reading the instructions. They are mainly used by spraying onto the surface and lining of the product.
These products should not be confused with regular flavorings. They may also smell good, but they also have the additional properties of absorbing and evaporating unpleasant odors.
Useful tips
When you come in from outside, wipe the surface of the leather, this way you can prevent the pores of the material from clogging and extend its service life.
If you don't agree with any of the ways to remove unpleasant odor from a leather jacket, try removing it another way. For example, you can always buy an odor absorber. Whatever you choose, you should act until the expected result is obtained, and then there will be no doubt about your own attractiveness.
- Never use substances such as acetone, gasoline or other solvents to clean or remove odor from leather items - they will simply ruin your expensive item and make the leather brittle and dry.
- When coming from the street, periodically wipe the leather with a damp cloth - this will prevent the pores in the material from clogging and extend its service life.
Laundry soap
Laundry soap can easily and quickly remove this “aroma.” Moreover, it is not necessary to treat entire clothes with it. It will be enough to just stretch the problem areas.
- To do this, take a foul-smelling item, moisten the armpit areas with running water and thoroughly rub them with ordinary laundry soap. The soap should form a thick layer on the fabric, which will draw out the odor from the fibers that does not suit us.
- After this, we leave the clothes for about 10 minutes and wait.
- Then rinse the treated area with water, thoroughly washing away the soap from its surface. You need to wash it off until it is completely removed.
Now all that remains is to dry the wetted area and iron it. That's it, the clothes are ready for further use.
Spray for treating things
The undeniable advantage of sprays is that they are universal, which means they are suitable for any type of clothing from simple T-shirts to bulky coats and jackets. The second advantage of sprays is the content of organic silver in them. It not only removes the unpleasant odor of sweat, but also has an antibacterial effect, prolonging it over time.
To get rid of the smell, you need to apply the product to foul-smelling areas of clothing and leave it alone for 30-40 minutes. Then, after the allotted time has passed, you need to wash the item in the washing machine using the manufacturer’s recommended cycle, dry it and enjoy the cleanliness. If desired, the treatment can also be carried out after washing or instead of it.

How to get rid of sweat odor on white clothes
Yellow sweat stains are especially visible on white items. Getting rid of them and the smell will not be easy, but it is possible even at home.
- Mix water and vodka in equal proportions. Treat the area where your armpits are with the resulting solution. And then wash as usual.
- Hydrogen peroxide will do an excellent job of removing yellow marks and a strong aroma. You need to add one tablespoon of hydrogen peroxide per liter of water. You need to soak the product in this solution for half an hour. After treatment, wash the items in the washing machine. You can add a whitening agent to the powder.
- Add two aspirin tablets to a glass of lukewarm water. They need to be crushed first. Stir until completely dissolved and treat stained areas. Leave for 2-3 hours. After this, rinse and wash with powder.
Removing the smell of sweat and its traces is a rather difficult process, so try to prevent the problem. Maintain personal hygiene. Wash things more often using high-quality powder. In winter, wear a T-shirt under your sweater. If you still cannot control your sweating, you can purchase special anti-sweat pads. They are very thin and will be invisible to others.
Important! When using any product, do not forget about the possibility of ruining the thing. Therefore, be sure to test before use. Apply a small amount of the selected product to an inconspicuous area of fabric. If its structure and color do not change, you can safely use this method.
Dish detergents
Another option is to use dish detergent. This method is suitable in cases where there is no time to wash the entire item, but you need to wear it to a meeting with someone in the next hour. But be careful - the product used should not contain dyes or fragrances. Otherwise, stains may remain on the surface of the material.
So, dilute the dishwashing liquid with water in a ratio of 1:3 and intensively foam the resulting solution. Then we apply it evenly to those places of clothing that we want to get rid of the unpleasant odor. We wait about 5-10 minutes, during which you can calmly prepare to leave the house, collecting your bag, briefcase, etc.
Effective ways to eliminate other unpleasant odors
A leather jacket may smell unpleasantly like smoke, or the material from which it is made may have a bad odor. To eliminate these problems, the coffee method is suitable. To do this, place outerwear and a pack of ground coffee in a large bag, sprinkle it on the product, let it stand tied for 48 hours, shake off the remaining coffee. Or you can dilute lemon juice with water (in a 1:1 ratio), treat the jacket with it, and let it dry thoroughly. All of these ways to combat corrosive odors on a leather jacket are simple and inexpensive. Using them, you can enjoy using this fashionable and always relevant wardrobe item for many years.
New products made from genuine leather always have a characteristic smell. Over time, the specific aroma disappears, but there is not always the desire or opportunity to wait. In addition, leather jackets often absorb surrounding unpleasant odors.
It is possible and even necessary to fight such a nuisance. It is of course possible to get rid of all these bad fragrances on your own, the main thing is to know and understand how to do it correctly, as well as what means are suitable.
First of all, let's talk about why a leather jacket can acquire an unpleasant aroma. What causes bad odor?
Low temperatures
As you know, microbes die when exposed to low temperatures. This means they automatically stop releasing the products of their vital activity, which speeds up the process of weathering the smell.
So, we take the clothes and take them to a well-ventilated room with a low air temperature. If it’s cool outside, we hang it on the balcony or loggia. In cases where it is impossible to find such temperature conditions, a refrigerator with a freezer can come to the rescue. And so that the clothes do not become saturated with the smell of the products in them, we place the clothes in a plastic bag, closing it tightly.
Table vinegar
You can use a 9% vinegar solution. Moreover, there are two effective options for restoring freshness to clothes using this product.
The first of them is less time-consuming and consists of simply applying table vinegar to problem areas with a cotton pad. You can also use a simple spray bottle to spray flowers. When applying the solution, it is advisable to lightly rub it into the fibers of the clothing and leave it alone for 10 minutes. After this, the treated area must be rinsed with warm water and hung up to air to get rid of the acid smell.
For the second option, in addition to table vinegar, you will also need a saucepan and a stove. Dissolve 1 tablespoon of vinegar in 1 liter of water, place on the burner and bring to a boil. Then we take the clothes and hold them over the steam until the smell disappears completely. Then, as in the first case, we ventilate the item by hanging it in the fresh air.
Alternative methods
If you suddenly discover that a leather jacket, sent to the closet for winter storage, has begun to “emit” an unpleasant odor, you can try to eliminate it using not the most conventional methods.
For example, you can perform “aromatherapy”. How to do it?
- Take 2-3 large juicy oranges.
- Cut off the skin with a sharp knife.
- Use the pulp for food, and rub the inside of the product well with the skins (pay special attention to the armpits and other odorous areas).
By the way, you can rub the top of the jacket with orange skins that have not yet dried; this will give the material not only a unique aroma, but also softness and shine.
The principle of removing unpleasant odor from a jacket using coffee is similar to the method with oranges. Indeed, in this case, the emphasis is also on a stronger aroma, which, when weathered, “carries” with it all other odors.
- Roast a handful of coffee beans.
- Grind them to a powder.
- Place the product in a plastic bag with no holes.
- Cover it with coffee powder.
- Tie the bag tightly.
- Allow the jacket to soak in the new scent for 2-3 days..
Immediately after this, take out the outerwear item, if necessary, remove any remaining powder from it and hang it on the balcony for ventilation.
Ammonia
Ammonia is in any home medicine cabinet, so why not use this product to combat unpleasant odors on your jacket. In addition, liquid soap can also be a good “pair” with ammonia, although it should be colorless.
- Mix ammonia (1 tsp) and soap (200 ml).
- Take a brush or sponge and soak it in the resulting solution.
- Generously coat the entire inside of the jacket..
- Wait at least 1 hour.
- Rinse off the ammonia-soap solution using a clean piece of cloth soaked in water.
Potassium permanganate solution or hydrogen peroxide
In this case, the choice of cleaning agent is directly related to the color of the product, since only dark things can be treated with potassium permanganate solution, but peroxide, on the contrary, is more suitable for light ones.
However, in both cases, the procedure will be the same. In addition, you can even combine two pharmaceutical drugs to increase the strength of the effect on unpleasant odors:
- Dilute potassium permanganate in 1 liter of warm water , using only 2-3 grains.
- Take a clean dish sponge.
- Soak it in a pale pink solution of potassium permanganate.
- Use a sponge to thoroughly wipe all the inside parts of the jacket..
Newspapers
We should turn to their help when we are dealing with bulky items that are problematic and sometimes simply impossible to wash. We are talking about winter jackets, coats, raincoats, and down jackets. It’s very easy to sweat in all these clothes, even if you walk into a warm room from a frosty street for a minute.
When starting to remove the unpleasant odor, we prepare a stack of newspapers, sort them into sheets and crumple them. Then we stuff the sleeves with the resulting lumps. If necessary, if the smell has spread to the entire inner lining of the product, stuff the entire garment with crumpled newspapers and fasten it with a zipper or buttons. After this, we wrap the outside of the clothes with the remaining sheets of newspaper and leave them wrapped for several days.
Newsprint and wrapping paper
A little-known fact, but paper can absorb unpleasant odors, provided that the leatherette item is completely dry. Newsprint will provide better results than office paper. The process consists of the following steps:
- Take an ordinary cardboard box and put crumpled paper in it, then, directly, the source of the unpleasant odor.
- Close the box tightly and leave for several days.
- If you still feel this smell when opening it, then wait another couple of days.
We suggest you read: Why there is an unpleasant smell in the refrigerator and how to remove it
Iron and vinegar
There is another very effective way to change the situation for the better. It will 100% cope with the task, giving clothes a fresh smell.
So, we remove the wet item from the machine drum after washing. We place it on the ironing board. We plug in the iron, heating its soleplate. While this process is gaining momentum, prepare gauze or white cloth and soak it in vinegar. After this, we place the gauze over the clothing. Now take a heated iron and iron the salvaged wardrobe item.
Pre-wash and potassium permanganate solution
There is one very simple way that will help deal with the problem. It involves re-washing clothes. If after the first wash the result does not satisfy us, we load the clothes into the drum of the machine again, pour a new dose of this powder into the washing powder compartment, and, accordingly, a dose of refreshing conditioner into the conditioner compartment.
In order to get rid of the ingrained smell of sweat on clothes consisting of natural materials with a small percentage of added synthetics, you need to use a weak solution of potassium permanganate. But without additional actions it may not work. Therefore, before processing, it is better to wash the clothes in a washing machine in the mode specified by the manufacturers on the label.
After this, dry the item. While it’s drying, don’t waste time and prepare a weak solution of potassium permanganate.
- To do this, dilute a small amount of potassium permanganate granules in warm water. The water should take on a faint pink color.
- Then we soak a clean white rag, sponge or cotton pad in it and wipe the problem areas of the clothing, which are very often the places where the material comes into contact with the armpits.
- As soon as this process is completed, we give the potassium permanganate solution half an hour to clean, after which we wash and dry again and enjoy the result.
Cleaning a Second Hand Jacket
Before washing your leather jacket, you will need to complete the following preparatory procedures:
- Dip a cloth in water and walk it over the contaminated areas. You need to check whether the fabric of the rag is stained. If it has changed color, washing the jacket is contraindicated. Tanned leather contains animal fats, which help keep the leather in acceptable condition. They can be washed with substances contained in washing powder.
- Minor stains can be removed with a sponge soaked in vegetable oil. After this, you need to treat the skin area with colorless vinegar.
- Before washing your jacket, you need to check whether it can be subjected to this procedure. You need to find a piece of leather sewn inside and wash it. If it changes in size or color, it is not advisable to wash the item.
White spirit and ammonia
One of the safest and most helpful products is white spirit or, as it is otherwise called, Stoddart’s solvent. It can be effectively used on colored clothes, black, wool or silk.
To achieve a better result, you need to make a mixture of the described substance with ammonia. In this case, it is necessary to adhere to strict proportions. Otherwise, the effect will be exactly the opposite - the sweat stain with its smell will become even more ingrained into the fibers of the fabric. Also, when adding ammonia in a larger volume than necessary, you can cause discoloration of the colors on clothes.
So, mix white spirit with ammonia in a ratio of 4 to 2. Apply the resulting solution to clothes directly in places where sweat stains are visible. We do not rub it in under any circumstances. Let the mixture absorb into the fibers of the fabric on its own. Leave the applied product and allow it to work independently for 1.5 hours.
