Suede: material features
Suede is tanned leather that has undergone special treatment with a fatty or formaldehyde composition. Due to special processing, the material becomes soft and velvety.
Due to its strength and wear resistance, suede is excellent for making clothing, shoes, and accessories.
The fleecy surface of suede is not only very pleasant to the touch, but also has increased plasticity, which allows you to implement interesting design ideas. Often, bags made of natural suede amaze the imagination with their non-standard appearance - the abundance of draperies and decorative elements turns them into an incredibly stylish accessory.
Features of this material include water resistance. However, you should not expose the accessory to moisture again, as frame bags may then lose their shape.
Main types of pollution
Capricious suede is very susceptible to contamination. Due to its characteristics, this material requires high-quality and safe dry cleaning every three months.
Regardless of color and size, suede bags require regular cleaning and quality care.
The main types of pollution include:
- dust. The fleecy surface of the bag gathers in folds, where particles of dust and dirt accumulate. If they are not removed in a timely manner, the appearance of the accessory will be hopelessly damaged;
- greasy spots. Thin deer suede is especially susceptible to such stains. They often appear near the handles and locks of the bag, where fingers often come into contact with the material;
- gloss and scuffs. Occur due to long-term use of the accessory;
- food stains. Juices, wine, melted chocolate - all these contaminants should be removed from suede as quickly as possible. Otherwise, the stain may be absorbed and change the color of the material;
- ink. Fresh ones can be removed quite effectively using home methods, but old ones have to be dealt with using professional means;
- organic origin. These include blood and in some cases mold;
- chemical substances. The most difficult type of pollution to remove. However, there are proven cleaning methods for removing them.
Is it washable?
Every housewife is concerned about the question of whether suede bags can be washed. This material does not tolerate moisture well, so it is not recommended to completely wet the products. Automatic washing in a washing machine is prohibited, even on gentle (delicate) cycles. Under no circumstances should accessories be soaked or wrung out.
Ways to wash suede bags with linings inside:
- If the lining is removed, separate it from the bag itself. Wash, dry and put back on.
- If it is not removable, you need to turn it out of the product as much as possible. Blot with a soapy sponge and dry thoroughly. Only after this can it be returned to its place.
You can still wash a suede handbag, but only in special cases when manual cleaning does not help. Then washing should be carried out at a temperature no higher than 30 degrees, without soaking and spinning. It is not advisable to clean the accessory this way more than once.
Dry cleaning of suede bags is carried out by special services. The cost of cleaning in such companies usually starts from 1000 rubles. But the result is worth it - the product will be perfectly clean.
Nubuck (unlike suede) cannot be subjected to wet processing at all. Therefore, to clean this material, it is recommended to purchase special products in stores. They usually come in the form of cleansing wipes.
First steps when discovering fresh stains on suede
The sooner you start cleaning, the easier it will be to deal with the contamination. Provided proper actions are taken, fresh stains in most cases are removed without the slightest trace.
If moisture gets on the suede, you need to blot the area with a clean cloth. Movements should be careful, without pressure. Then you need to let the bag dry naturally.
Under no circumstances should you dry your suede bag with a hairdryer or place it on a radiator! These actions will irreversibly damage the natural material.
A cloth napkin will absorb liquid dirt and prevent it from spreading into the depths of the material
. If liquid dirt is found on a suede bag, then manipulating the napkin can only make the situation worse. Such contamination must be allowed to dry, and then very carefully removed from the pile using a brush.
It is better to choose a brush for removing dirt with natural bristles; it is softer and does not damage the surface of the suede.
If a suede bag gets stained with wine or blood, then it is necessary to treat the stain with a special product in the form of a spray or foam within the first two hours. Professional stain removers cope very well with stains of food and protein origin, the main thing is that cleaning is done immediately after stains are detected.
The advantage of treating stains on suede with a professional product is that with this method of cleaning there is no mechanical damage to the top layer
If this set of measures was not effective or you are faced with an old and deeply ingrained stain, then there are proven methods for removing stains from suede.
Cleaning methods
The taboo on water baths for suede products does not mean that such accessories have a short life. There are many ways to restore the former shine to a bag made of fleecy leather without the risk of permanently ruining the item.
Soap solution
Soapy water is not prepared for dipping, but to obtain a liquid that will affect trapped dirt, weaken the degree of their adherence to the fibers and make it easier to clean out dirt particles later.
Use the solution only when dealing with stubborn dust and dirt. To obtain the working composition use:
- 5 parts water;
- 1 part ammonia.
After mixing the components, dip a sponge made of dense foam rubber into the solution, and then squeeze it out as hard as possible. And only after that they drive it through contaminated areas, each time moving against the pile. After waiting 5-10 minutes after treatment, additional wet treatment is carried out, but with a different composition.
It requires:
- 1 liter of clean water;
- 1 tbsp. a spoonful of ordinary kitchen vinegar 6%.
A minute after the second treatment, the surface of the product is thoroughly blotted with thick paper napkins, removing as much moisture as possible from the suede.
Soda milk
The composition is suitable for removing old street dirt. For the working solution you need:
- a glass of milk (cow's, goat's, or even store-bought and low-fat);
- 1 tbsp. l. baking soda.
After waiting for the powder component to dissolve, the problem areas are treated with the composition, squeezing the sponge as hard as possible. After 10 minutes, the area is minimally moistened again, but with vinegar water. Then blot it with paper material with good absorbency and dry the accessory by hanging it on a hook.
Ammonia
This substance copes well with shiny sides and greasy stains on suede products.
For application, use a solution by adding a tablespoon of ammonia to a glass of clean water. For better penetration, moistened areas are lightly treated with a stiff brush made of natural bristles or a special rubber one. After keeping the mixture on the surface for 3-4 minutes, the residues begin to be actively removed using cellulose wipes.
water vapor
Evaporation rising above boiling water can even out the villi in places with the greatest stress from touch. To improve the appearance of the bag, hold it over a hot “fog” for no more than 10 minutes. Then excess moisture is removed, the item is dried and brushed over the treated area.
Mechanical cleaning
This is the most popular method of treating suede surfaces, as it does not affect the chemical environment inside the villi and the skin itself. For processing the following is used:
- Special brushes made of rubber material. They may have false “bristles” in the form of straight or shaped grooves, or similar to regular ones, but with a small head.
- Clothes scrapers with bristles.
- No longer used or new toothbrushes.
- “Erasers” made of light rubber.
- Old crusty crusts from loaves of black bread.
Vinegar
However, like ammonia, it is better not to treat suede with pure vinegar, even if it is very greasy. The optimal composition of an acidic aqueous solution: 1 to 10, where the smaller part is the active component. After processing the product, it is immediately blotted to prevent moisture from penetrating into the very depths of the pile and skin.
Petrol
To clean suede from fat deposits, use only special and purified gasoline, which is sold in any hardware store. The substance evaporates quickly and therefore when working with it, a number of conditions are observed:
- Located outdoors or in a well-ventilated area.
- During this process, do not approach open flame sources. Do not smoke during the cleaning procedure.
Absorbent
Fresh, greasy marks are combated with powders with good absorbent properties. Suitable for this role are: drunk and dried natural coffee, activated coal crushed into dust (only for dark-colored accessories), soda, ordinary chalk (for light and white bags).
Salt
With its help, they prevent the fat in a fresh stain from eating deep into the surface of the material. Do not use on black and dark items due to the risk of streaks after accidental contact of the item with water. Both dry and slightly moistened salt are suitable for application.
Special means
Stores that sell suede items often offer care products. Usually this is a foam for applying to greasy surfaces or areas with salty stains - a common occurrence after walking along winter streets with ice reagents scattered on the asphalt. Their only advantage over homemade suede cleaning products is that they are completely ready for use.

How to care for (clean) a suede bag at home?
Often, representatives of the fair sex refuse to purchase a suede bag due to the widespread opinion that it is difficult to care for such material. Meanwhile, it is not at all that difficult, you just need to take into account some important nuances.
Faux suede
Treatment with water-repellent aerosol
It is necessary to shake the container with the product, apply a thin layer evenly on a clean and dry surface of the product and leave for 10 minutes so that the aerosol is fully absorbed. After this, you just need to comb the surface of the bag with a special suede brush.
Washing suede with shampoo
It is necessary to dilute a little shampoo in a small amount of water (no more than 20 g per 1 liter of water) until a thick foam mass is obtained. Then, using a sponge with a hard pad, you need to apply the resulting solution to the surface of the bag and rub the contaminated areas. After finishing cleaning, rinse the sponge well under water and use it to remove any remaining soap solution from the treated areas.
Special products for suede
To care for such a product you must have:
- a polymer sponge or a soft cloth with small lint;
- double-sided brush for cleaning suede surfaces with rubber bristles;
- special water-repellent agent;
- aerosols for removing stains from suede.
Devices for cleaning suede bags
To properly and safely care for natural suede, you need to purchase special accessories. They are sold in stores that sell shoes, and their cost is quite affordable. High-quality brushes and sponges will help extend the life of the product and make it easier to care for its appearance.
A universal triple brush can replace several devices at once. On one side it has metal bristles, and on the other there is a rubber brush for processing dirt. There are special protrusions on the sides for removing particles of dirt and dust from hard-to-reach places (the space under decorative elements, folds, seams).
The metal elements of the brush lift and fluff up the suede fibers.
With such a brush it is necessary to clean suede only against the direction of the pile. This protects the surface layer of the material from mechanical abrasion.
Video: review and methods of using a brush for cleaning suede from the Twist Casual Care series
I highly recommend purchasing such a universal brush. It contains everything you need to care for your suede bag at home. The convenient handle allows you to quickly and easily remove small dirt and dust from the surface of the accessory.
The sponge with large pores is placed in a plastic case for convenience. It can be used to process light-colored suede without intensive dyeing. This sponge effectively removes dirt particles from under the fibers, and is also suitable for treating shiny areas.
The suede sponge is designed taking into account the characteristics of the material and helps maintain the deep matte finish of the suede.
The working part of the double crepe suede brush is made of flexible and elastic rubber, placed in a case in a special way. This ensures complete and comprehensive treatment of the fleecy material during cleaning, and also allows you to give the surface layer volume.
When cleaning suede products with a double crepe brush, movements should be short, without using force, otherwise the pile will receive mechanical damage
A universal triangular brush is suitable for those who do not want to purchase a whole arsenal for caring for suede products. It combines several devices at once. Among them:
- eraser for removing grease stains and cleaning agent residues;
- rubber brush to remove particles of dust, dirt and make the fleecy material dull;
- nylon pile for regular processing of the product;
- metal wire elements for deep cleaning of suede.
A triangular brush for suede with different cleaning surfaces will allow for complete care of the product.
Features of caring for a suede accessory with laser treatment
This material must be cleaned as carefully as possible. It is better to abandon aggressive chemicals in favor of more gentle and natural formulations.
A suede bag with laser treatment should be protected from moisture and try to treat it daily with water-repellent aerosols, especially in rainy weather.
For cleaning, it is recommended to use a soap solution with ammonia.
Step-by-step instruction:
- Dilute in 200 ml. water ½ tsp. grated baby soap without dyes or flavors. An alternative is laundry soap.
- Add 1 tbsp. l. ammonia.
- To stir thoroughly.
- Soak a suede brush in the solution and scrub the stains.
- Gently rinse off any remaining residue with cold water.
- Brush the material with a rubber brush.
- Dry at room temperature. On average, the process takes 15-20 hours.
You can see how a suede bag is cleaned with a special spray in the video.
Features of washing and drying suede bags
Suede bags, even very dirty ones, are strictly not recommended to be washed in an automatic machine. In eight cases out of ten, machine washing irreversibly destroys a suede product.
An accessory that requires global cleaning can be washed by hand using mild detergents, but only if it does not have a frame. Due to the fact that the frame of the bag is most often made by the manufacturer from thick corrugated cardboard, the bag may lose its shape after wet processing.
How to wash a suede bag by hand:
- Empty the bag completely before washing.
Be sure to check before washing that there are no foreign objects left in the bag. - Pour warm water into a basin (suitable temperature 36–39°) and add a mild detergent to it. Beat the foam.
Use liquids for washing woolen and delicate fabrics as a detergent. - Immerse a suede bag in the soapy solution and leave for half an hour.
- After the specified time has passed, rinse the product thoroughly in cool water and dry it with dry paper.
Try to use this cleaning method as rarely as possible, no more than once a year.
Do not rub suede with brushes during washing and do not apply pure soap to dirty areas.
How not to clean a suede bag
First, it is recommended to find out what kind of material it is and what features it has. Natural suede is a soft, specially crafted leather. As a rule, it is extracted from the skins of deer, elk and other cattle. The leather is fat tanned, resulting in it becoming soft and elastic. The artificial material is made from polyester and cotton and is impregnated with Teflon on top. It is more durable, repels water and can even survive mechanical damage.
The main rule is not to wet the bag with water, because natural suede does not tolerate moisture. After drying, the material will definitely have stains that cannot be removed with anything. In addition, deformation and damage to the item is possible. When cleaning a suede bag at home, you must follow these rules:
- The product should be cleaned as quickly as possible, without allowing the material to get wet through;
- It is unacceptable to use powders and bleaches; it is better to replace them with gel or shampoo;
- Do not completely soak the bag or leave it wet for a long time;
- It is highly undesirable to rub or wring out the material; excess moisture is removed with a towel or paper napkins.
Attention! Drying suede bags in a machine, on a radiator or in the sun is prohibited. The product should be stuffed with paper or cloth and left in the fresh air. It is recommended to go over a damp item with a brush (silicone, rubber) or sandpaper to avoid streaks.
Nubuck cannot be wet - for these purposes it is better to buy napkins and protective sprays. Nothing will happen to artificial suede, so you can safely wash it even in a machine. It is necessary to select the correct temperature (up to 30 degrees) and turn off the “spin” function.
Ways to quickly and accurately refresh your bag using improvised means
In order to clean a suede bag at home from grime and dirt, you will need simple ingredients that can be found in every home. These are universal products that will suit all bags made of this material.
- Soda with milk. This method will help to simultaneously remove dirt and refresh the color of the accessory. Take the components in a 1:1 ratio. Make a homogeneous mixture. Take a cotton pad and apply the resulting mixture to the stains, then remove with a damp cloth.
- A regular eraser. Take a white eraser, preferably unused. Gently wipe the dirty areas with it until the dirt is removed. Then treat the area with a damp cloth.
- Soap solution. To do this, you need to take warm water and laundry soap. Make a soap solution and dip a soft sponge into it, squeeze out. Gently and carefully scrub away any stains on the bag, and then use a damp cloth to remove any soap scum from the bag.
These are the three simplest methods that do not require complex tools or ingredients. They can be used by owners of suede handbags of any style and shade.

How to clean from dust and dirt
To quickly and effectively clean your bag from dust, you need to take a special brush designed for suede. It can be two- or three-sided. It is a combination of a rubber brush, a metal brush and nylon hair to lift the pile. In general, it is best to buy such a brush together with a suede accessory.
How to use the tool? Rub the accessory with gentle, sweeping movements until it is completely clean.
If there is not dust on the bag, but a little dirt, it is better to let the dirt dry. In this case, you can carefully and painlessly remove the dirt with a brush without damaging the material. After this, you can apply a little salt and then repeat the brushing. If the contamination is serious, then you can make a 1:1 mixture of ammonia and starch and apply it to the dirty area. Then clean with a special brush.
How to get rid of stains and grease
It is impossible not to put at least one spot on the bag even when wearing the accessory with the most care. Sooner or later this will happen, even if the owner himself is as careful as possible. How to deal with the problem?
If it is a grease stain, then it is better to treat it as quickly as possible. Immediately blot off excess fat with a dry cloth. Then cover the stain with salt for a few minutes and clean with a brush. For light suede, you can use talc or chalk, and for dark suede, coffee grounds are suitable.
If the stains are from wine, blood or tea, you can use one of the following options:
- Detergent.
For 1 liter of water take 1 tbsp. a spoonful of liquid soap or dishwashing detergent without abrasive particles. Add a few drops of ammonia. Use the resulting mixture to treat the stain with a soft sponge, immediately blotting off excess moisture. Leave for a few minutes, then wipe with a damp cloth. - A solution of ammonia.
To do this, you need distilled water and ammonia in a ratio of 4:1. Use a cotton pad soaked in the solution to wipe the stains. After they disappear and the bag dries, lift the pile with a brush. - Vinegar solution.
For 1 liter of water you need to take 1 tsp. vinegar. Moisten a cotton pad and gently scrub the bag. After a few minutes, wipe this area with a damp cloth.
The main thing is not to use abrasive products that can damage the suede texture.
Talcum powder works well for fresh red blood stains. Apply it to the stain for 4 hours, then remove it and apply soap foam for another 10 minutes. Then wipe with a clean sponge and allow to dry naturally. Ammonia, vinegar or liquid soap are likely to be found in any home.
Cleaning light suede bags
Light handbags in white, peach, ivory or champagne look very beautiful and stylish. But they also require especially careful treatment. If dirt or a stain appears on such an accessory, it is important to remove the problem as quickly as possible before it becomes embedded in the material.
How to clean a suede bag in light colors:
- First of all, you need to use colorless substances
so that they do not stain the suede. Vinegar, ammonia, chalk, talc, and tooth powder are suitable for this. - The first two components are diluted with water
, and dirty stains and areas on the handbag are treated with this solution. - After treatment, the bag is wiped with a damp cloth
and
allowed to dry
, then the pile is lifted with a brush. - Dry stains
can be
removed using talcum powder, chalk, or tooth powder
, which are sprinkled on the stain for several hours. Then clean with a brush and lift the pile.
A couple more ways to clean dark and bright suede handbags
- For a brown bag, coffee
. To do this, mix coffee with water in a 1:2 ratio. Dip a brush into the resulting mixture and thoroughly work the stain. After the bag is dry, wipe off any remaining coffee grounds with a napkin. - the
suede on the bag if the stains are small. You need to boil water in a saucepan and then steam your purse for a few minutes. Use a rubber brush to remove dirt and then carefully dry the accessory. - Pumice.
This cleaning option is suitable in the most difficult cases, when dirt has become thoroughly ingrained into the purse. Take a pumice stone and gently, without pressing, rub the dirt. This option will not remove the grease stain, but it will help remove large pieces of dense dirt. It is only important that the latter is already dry, otherwise cleaning will only drive the dirt deeper into the material.
Is it possible to wash a suede bag?
A suede bag cannot be machine washed. Even if it is too dirty, you shouldn’t ruin it completely. Powders and other detergents contain substances that can completely ruin the appearance of the product. And then there will be nothing left to do but put it in a closet out of sight or simply take it to a landfill.
If you still want to wash your handbag, it is better to choose the most gentle method: take a small basin, pour warm water with mild shampoo or soap without glycerin. Gently wipe the surface of the bag with the resulting solution, then wipe thoroughly with a dry towel and leave to dry naturally.
You cannot leave it in the sun or force dry it, because the accessory will lose its appearance.
If the above methods do not help, then you can try going to a dry cleaner. But remember that only high quality material can withstand the use of chemicals. Therefore, to begin with, it is better to try to remove the problem at home using gentle methods.

Methods
Methods are selected depending on the type of contamination and the desired effect. It is recommended to use the most gentle means first and move on to aggressive ones if the first ones do not help achieve the intended goal.
Special brush
Special brushes are available in several varieties. Recently, the market has been flooded with triple brushes, which have more than one working surface in order to increase cleaning efficiency without purchasing several separate tools for this.
A brush with metal or stiff bristles is suggested to lift the lint and remove dirt in the roughest possible manner. Brushes with rubber or rubber bristles are required to remove shiny areas. And dust can be removed using rollers with adhesive tape.
Eraser
You can purchase either a special eraser designed for such purposes, or use a stationery eraser - the mechanism of action does not change. To remove dirt, you only need to lightly rub the dirty area.
Table vinegar
This product will help not only effectively deal with dirt, but also raise the pile. Best used to remove stains such as dust, grime and dirt. The use of vinegar is possible even without its subsequent rinsing from the product.

Salt
Removing grease stains from a bag should be done as quickly as possible. Most often, you may have salt on hand to help solve the problem. The stain should be blotted with a paper towel or napkin to remove excess grease, and then sprinkled with absorbent. It will absorb the remaining substance. This method has a significant drawback - it cannot be used on dark bags.
Steam
Steam will not help in the fight against dirt. It is required to be used if you need to fluff up the pile and remove shiny areas. You can use either boiling water, a steam generator, or an iron that supports this function. Be careful not to bring the bag too close to the soleplate of the iron, and also be careful not to over-wet the product.
Absorbents
In addition to salt, other absorbents can be used. Their role can be talc, starch and crushed oat bran. The latter should be heated in a dry frying pan or water bath and the stain should be rubbed. The first two products just need to be poured onto the stain and left for half an hour, and then remove the residue with a brush.
Detergents
If other methods have failed to remove the stain, you should wash the product in a soapy solution. You can prepare it using dishwashing detergent, liquid soap or shampoo. In this case, you should ensure that the product is completely dissolved in water before immersing the product in the solution.
Petrol
Delicate material can be cleaned of any type of contamination using refined gasoline, but you should be careful when using it. When carrying out the procedure, you need to gently rub the stain with a cotton pad soaked in the solution, and then sprinkle with fine-grained salt, which will absorb both dirt and gasoline. The remaining product is removed with a brush.
Ammonia
This product must be mixed with water in a ratio of 1:4. This solution can be used to clean suede bags of any color. Using a swab dipped in this solution, you need to treat all contaminants, and then remove the ammonia itself using a sponge soaked in clean water.
Milk and soda
A glass of milk needs to be heated to 40 degrees Celsius and a teaspoon of baking soda dissolved in it. Using the solution, you need to treat the contamination, and remove the residue with a damp cloth.
Professional products
The market offers a large number of products that make it easy to clean the product at home. In most cases they come in the form of foam, but there are also gels, creams and emulsions. They should be used according to the attached instructions. They work better in combination with special brushes.
How to care
Caring for a suede product must be carried out in accordance with all the rules for handling this material. If you follow all the tips and recommendations for cleaning and drying, as well as proper use of the product, you can maintain its presentable appearance for a longer period.
To clean a suede bag, you need to use special brushes that will not negatively affect the condition of the pile. What's wrong with a regular rag? It smears dirt and damages the fibers of the material, and therefore is not usually used for cleaning suede products.
It is worth adhering to the precautions for using the product, which suggest refraining from walking in the rain and snow with this product, since otherwise there may be stains and water stains on it. It is recommended to regularly clean the product, preventing stains of dirt that are on it from becoming better entrenched in the material.
It is worth not only proper cleaning, but also drying the product. The bag should be stored with paper stuffed in it and preferably in a special case or box so that dust does not accumulate on the product.
If possible, you should avoid completely dampening the product as this may ruin its appearance. If you follow the rules of care and use of the product, you can extend its life, preserving the shape and color of the bag for a long time.
