Genital fleas: what they look like
Fleas belong to the order of wingless bloodsuckers, which includes more than 2000 species. Human apartments and houses are attacked by representatives of common fleas – Pulicidae. There are 160 species in this family, including human, dog, and cat fleas, as well as plague carriers, rat fleas.
The parasites have a small, laterally compressed body no larger than 5 mm in size, a developed abdomen, a head with a piercing-sucking mouthparts and 6 paws, with the help of which they hold themselves in the fur of a mammal and make jumps.
Insects do not require a nest to reproduce. Females scatter fertilized eggs, some of which die. After 2 weeks, surviving eggs turn into larvae and then into adult fleas.
What are "genital fleas"
Genital fleas usually refer to all types of fleas that live in your home (in furniture, in the floor, carpets and rugs, in clothes and even in soft toys).
We all know cat or dog fleas, but in addition to these species, the “sexual” category also includes bird, rat and human fleas.
People called them sexual because the most favorite way for them to get into your apartment or house is through cracks in the floor . It is precisely because a person most often notices a small bloodsucker on the floor that this type of flea received the general name “genital fleas” .
The danger of genital fleas
Fleas, falling on the fur of a mammal, remain in it, as they constantly need blood. They move easily from dog to human, mouse, pet hamster or cat.
Different types of jumping ectoparasites share the ability to cause diseases:
- pulicosis;
- Sarcopsillosis.
Fleas are carriers of infectious diseases and parasitic worms - nematodes.
Blood-sucking insects that attack pets and humans spread pathogens:
The danger of fleas to humans.
- plague;
- cholera;
- tularemia;
- myxomatosis;
- tick-borne encephalitis;
- hepatitis B and C;
- salmonellosis;
- brucellosis;
- typhus;
- yersiniosis.
The insect bite causes a noticeable itch in the victim. Young individuals who have not yet synthesized the enzyme responsible for pain relief are bitten especially painfully.
By scratching the skin until it bleeds, the victim introduces additional infection into the wound. Most often, staphylococcal and streptococcal infections penetrate into the blood, causing the appearance of pustules at the site of the lesion.
If the inflammation is not treated, pyoderma develops - a purulent-inflammatory skin disease. In pets, constant itching leads to dermatitis.
Genital fleas: description
These are insects that live on the body of a person or animal, where they feed on blood. Insects live up to 3 months, going through several stages of their development.
During the period of its existence, the female can lay up to 500 eggs, from which transparent larvae, up to 1 mm long, are born. After this, they begin to eat various organic remains. At this stage, they can be found in places where a lot of different garbage has accumulated, in places where pets live, as well as on their fur. The larvae are quite tenacious because they can tolerate sudden temperature fluctuations and quickly adapt to toxic components.
If conditions allow, then after a couple of weeks an adult parasite grows from the larva. The adult insect is different in that it can make high and long jumps, which aggravates the problem, since the flea is almost impossible to catch. To feel comfortable, a flea needs to eat at least once every 3 days. While waiting for its potential victim, a flea can remain without food for a long time.
How do they get into the apartment?
Genital fleas enter a person’s home on the fur of animals, clothes and shoes of the owner of the apartment or guests. Having entered the house, the insect hides in the pet’s fur or the pile of flooring, carpets, and in the joints of the floor (linoleum, boards, parquet).
The reasons for the appearance of fleas in an apartment can be:
- living above a damp basement, which is not cleaned from insects;
- entry from the entrance or neighboring apartments;
- unsanitary living conditions, cluttered housing.
If there are mice in the house, then rodent nests become the permanent habitat of genital fleas. Here the insects are provided with a cool, damp shelter and a constant source of nutrition in the form of rat blood.
If a cat gets into the basement or the owner comes down, then the fleas, jumping on them, spread throughout the house. On human clothing, blood-sucking parasites move into the hallway, bedroom, kitchen, and on cat fur - into outbuildings and neighboring houses.
How to deal with fleas in an apartment
Before starting to kill fleas, it is necessary to identify the source of their appearance. Without this, it is impossible to organize effective preventive measures. If blood-sucking parasites do not block the path of penetration into a human home, after treatment they will disappear from the house only for a while. But after a few weeks, you will again notice how fleas are crawling on the floor, and your arms and legs are covered with bite marks.
The first likely source of fleas in an apartment is pets. In this case, the following actions will help get rid of parasites and protect against their reappearance:
- Treat the bed and all pet items and wash at high temperature.
- Treat the animal against fleas with a veterinary drug and a special shampoo.
- Periodically drip flea and tick drops onto the withers, wear a special collar, or use other effective methods of protecting pets from blood-sucking parasites.
The second common reason for the appearance of fleas in an apartment is their migration from technical and neighboring residential premises. Blood-sucking parasites can go in search of a new habitat in two cases:
- The number has increased significantly; the previous food supply is not enough.
- The conditions in the room changed to unfavorable: the air temperature and humidity significantly increased or decreased, and disinfestation was organized at the facility.
In this case, saving a house from a flea infestation will help by simultaneously treating the house with insecticidal preparations, sealing cracks in the floor, walls and ceiling, organizing barrier protection - spraying chemical repellents and toxic agents on the ventilation opening, door and window openings, pipes and other possible places movement of fleas.
The flea control strategy can be organized according to two principles: on your own or with the help of a professional pest control service. When is it advisable to destroy blood-sucking parasites yourself?
- you are confident in your knowledge and skills;
- fleas have appeared in the house recently and have not yet had time to reproduce;
- you can purchase an effective chemical and properly treat the premises in compliance with safety requirements and taking into account the nesting areas of parasites.
The easiest way to kill fleas yourself is to treat your apartment with an effective household insecticide. The method is especially effective if you start fighting at an early stage of the appearance of blood-sucking parasites, when they have not yet had time to reproduce. In stores you can find drugs in the form of spray, cream, gel, concentrated liquid, granules, powder. The best option is an insecticide in the form of an aerosol. It is easy to spray, and the smallest particles can penetrate into the most remote areas. To treat the space under the baseboard, various corners and crevices, it is better to purchase a special nozzle in the form of a thin long tube.
Important!
Before using an insecticide, you must carefully study the manufacturer's instructions.
If the drug requires preliminary preparation, it should be diluted in a well-ventilated and ventilated area in the indicated dosages. Before processing an apartment, you must wear gloves, safety glasses, a mask or a respirator. One of the main factors influencing the effectiveness of self-disinsection is the quality and thorough treatment of hard-to-reach places. One can only hope for the death of all fleas if the chemical has penetrated into all areas where the blood-sucking parasites live. Parasites prefer to make nests in closets, in high pile carpets, under bathtubs and baseboards, in secluded crevices and corners.
How to fight fleas if all household chemicals have been tried, but blood-sucking parasites are still found in the apartment?
Professional treatment of the premises is a guaranteed way to get rid of fleas
While it is quite possible to deal with single fleas on your own, given their widespread distribution and large numbers, the only effective way to cleanse your home of parasites will be professional control methods. SES specialists organize disinfection taking into account the physiological, biological and other characteristics of the life activity of blood-sucking parasites. One of the main difficulties in killing fleas is the high resistance of eggs and larvae to external factors due to a reliable protection mechanism. But experienced specialists have long developed proven methods for solving the problem.
Employees of a professional pest control service use certified chemicals with a long-lasting residual effect to combat indoor fleas. It will destroy not only adult individuals, but also larvae, as well as young animals that hatched from eggs after the premises were treated. If the client strictly follows the specialist’s instructions, the insecticide will destroy all parasites in the house.
The second reason for the high effectiveness of professional pest control methods is the spraying of a chemical using a cold or hot fog method. Today this is the most effective way to treat premises. For this, a fog generator is used, which emits the working product in the form of an aerosol under high pressure. The smallest chemical components hover in the air, settle on all surfaces of the apartment, penetrate into corners, cracks, holes, the space under the baseboard and other hard-to-reach hidden places where fleas often make nests. A thin insecticidal film is formed, upon contact with which the blood-sucking parasites die.
A distinctive feature of a professional approach to flea control is an integrated approach. Specialists organize not only the treatment of the premises, but also preventive measures and barrier protection against the reappearance of blood-sucking parasites. A disinfection service employee will give recommendations on how to prevent another second invasion of individuals. Professional methods are a universal way to combat any blood-sucking parasites: bed, carpet, basement, ground, house and sand fleas.
Signs of infection
To make sure that there are fleas in your home, you can lay out sheets of clean paper on the floor. On a white surface, insects will be clearly visible.
A sign of the spread of ectoparasites is the restless behavior of animals, their constant desire to scratch their ears, neck, and groin. These parts of the body are less hairy and are favorite places for fleas to attack.
A person's legs suffer. Many bite marks appear on them, which look like small red spots. The affected areas are characterized by unbearable itching.
Ways to get rid of genital fleas in an apartment
The best way to combat fleas is to treat pets with detergents that are harmless to mammals. Treating your apartment with insecticides will also help get rid of fleas.
For disinfestation of premises the following is used:
- household chemicals with insecticides (shampoos, floor cleaners, aerosols);
- traditional methods (herbs, plant extracts, salts).
It is necessary to systematically treat the apartment and animals with insecticides.

Chemical treatment
Professional cleaning of premises from parasites is carried out using several methods using chemicals toxic to insects.
The most effective methods of disinfestation:
- hot fog;
- cold fog;
- fine spraying.
Fogging involves spraying a substance that is poisonous to insects with a generator. Hot and cold fog differ in the temperature of the solution. It is better to use cold fog in an apartment, as this method damages the furniture less.
Hot fog can be used in basements. Fine-droplet spraying is carried out using a special sprayer.
Furniture and walls in the house are treated to a height of 1.5 m, paying attention to every nook and corner of the room. Wash with anti-flea solutions or spray with aerosols carpets, dog or cat bedding, areas under radiators and behind the refrigerator.
After treatment, the room must remain closed for at least 2 hours. It is better to leave home for 1-2 days. After returning, you need to ventilate the apartment, then wash the treated surfaces with soapy water. Only after this can children, adults and pets return to the house.
To completely exterminate insects, it is necessary to repeat the treatment after 10 and 20 days.
Anti-flea solutions for cleaning floors
Wet cleaning helps fight harmful insects. It is carried out using purchased or independently prepared solutions. Mixtures help reduce the activity of arthropods (but not kill them), get rid of larvae, eggs on the floor and furniture surfaces.
You can add to the water for wet cleaning:
Wet cleaning in the apartment can be done by adding flea shampoo to the water.
- pet shampoo for parasites;
- insect growth inhibitors;
- Diatomite powder;
- preparations for removing fleas from livestock.
If there are few fleas in the room, then instead of drugs you can use laundry soap. It is grated and added to a bucket of water, then the contents are mixed well until everything is completely dissolved.
After washing the floor with a solution of laundry soap, after complete drying, you need to treat the surface with clean water. You can use baking soda instead of soap solution. 4-5 spoons are enough per bucket.
Application of aerosols
It is convenient to spray insecticides from aerosol cans. The procedure is carried out twice with an interval of 7 days, since aerosols destroy adults and larvae, but do not affect eggs.
Aerosols are considered the most effective:
- “Dichlorvos” - a 190 ml aerosol is used over an area of 20 m²;
- “Raptor” – a 350 ml can is enough to treat 60 m²;
- “Raid” – 350 ml of product is enough to kill insects on 35-45 m².
When using pest control products, precautions must be taken. When choosing an aerosol, it is important to consider the area of the house, including all living rooms and utility rooms. Sometimes several cans may be required.

Use of chemicals
- During processing, toxic substances are used that have a detrimental effect on parasites. Treatment methods such as room spraying, cold and hot fog can be used.
- Regarding this method, such as fog treatment, it is often used by specialized services, since professional equipment is required. The treatment process involves spraying a pesticide at different temperatures. Cold fog is used in residential areas because it has less effect on surfaces. But for basements they use hot fog.
- When processing an apartment, it is necessary to pay great attention to hard-to-reach places. Surfaces are processed up to 1.5 meters in height. They treat floors, baseboards, carpets, behind the refrigerator and radiator, and places where pets sleep.
- Such processing requires compliance with safety measures, since toxic chemicals are used and they can harm the health of people and animals. After the procedure, you will need to leave the premises for at least 2 days. Upon return, surfaces must be thoroughly washed and only returned to residents. Remember that insecticides do not affect flea eggs, so after 2 weeks the procedure is repeated to kill young fleas.
Folk remedies to help
Traditional methods against blood-sucking insects are best used in combination with synthetic insecticides. Natural remedies are suitable for preventing infestation by parasitic insects. Herbal preparations do not kill parasites, like chemical insecticides, but repel and drive them out of the house.
An exception is Pyrethrum powder, which is ground chamomile inflorescences. This folk remedy is widely used by professional exterminators, who sprinkle the corners of rooms with Pyrethrum after chemical treatment.
Herbal infusions
The best herbs for fleas include chamomile inflorescences, wormwood, lavender, tansy, calamus, thyme, and eucalyptus.
Wormwood, spread in bunches in the corners of the house, with its unpleasant odor helps drive out fleas and prevents them from entering the home.
An infusion is made from wormwood, tansy, and eucalyptus, which is used to treat areas where fleas accumulate in a spray bottle. To prepare the product, mix herbs, taking 2 tbsp. l. tansy and wormwood and adding a spoonful of eucalyptus to them. The collection is poured with 2 liters of boiling water and left for 12 hours. When treating a room with herbal infusion, there is no need to use protective equipment or remove family members and pets from the house.

Rock salt
Cleaning using rock salt, which is scattered in corners and other places where fleas accumulate, helps to get rid of insects in the house. The chitinous cover of parasites is destroyed upon contact with salt crystals.
Dry baking soda powder has a similar effect on insects. To reduce the number of adult arthropods, the floor should be sprinkled with dry salt, soda, or a mixture of both. It will not be possible to completely clean the room in this way, but the number of blood-sucking pests will decrease.
How does pine needles work?
The smell of pine needles repels fleas. It is sprinkled on the floor and furniture. After the pine smell disappears, the needles are replaced. To drive arthropods out of the apartment, the procedure is repeated several times.
Spruce branches can be kept in the house constantly so that insects avoid it.
The effect of citrus fruits on genital fleas
Peels and decoction of citrus fruits are used against fleas. The crusts are laid out in the corners of the apartment, on window sills, under furniture.
The room can be sprayed with an infusion of fruits. Any citrus fruit is suitable for its preparation. The fruit along with the peel is finely chopped, pour 2 tbsp. water and leave for a day. The resulting infusion is filtered and the room is sprayed from a spray bottle. This product will not kill insects, but it can repel them.
Preparing the premises for disinfestation
Before processing the premises, people and animals, including fish in aquariums, are taken away from home for a day. If the aquarium cannot be removed, it is closed for the duration of treatment.
The apartment is carefully prepared for disinfestation:
- clean upholstered furniture;
- vacuum carpets and floor coverings;
- the equipment is covered with polyethylene;
- furniture is moved away from the walls;
- the bag is thrown out of the vacuum cleaner, as it contains flea larvae and eggs;
- do wet cleaning.
Cleaning the apartment is necessary to eliminate possible places where parasites accumulate.
All products are removed. To achieve a high concentration of insecticide, vents, windows and doors are tightly closed. The pillows are taken outside, frozen in winter or warmed in the sun in summer. Bed linen is washed in hot water with the addition of chlorine-containing detergents.
Safety precautions
Personal protective equipment used during disinsection.
Disinsection of the premises is carried out wearing personal protective equipment. There should be no other people or pets in the apartment at this time.
When carrying out work you must use:
- protective clothing that completely covers the skin;
- respirators;
- gloves;
- eye protection goggles.
The home is pre-prepared for chemical treatment against insects. All doors, windows, ventilation grilles are hermetically sealed so that the insecticide does not penetrate into neighboring apartments where there are people.
After treatment, work clothes are washed separately from other items, and hands and face are thoroughly washed.
Preventive measures
After disinsection, measures are taken to prevent the spread of parasites. Every 1-2 months, pets are treated with drops applied to the withers or washed with flea shampoos.
If there are no animals in the house, once a month you can spray Dichlorvos or Bolfo in the room and leave it for several hours. Upon return, you will need to ventilate your home well for 2 hours.
Wet cleaning is done by adding a little zoo shampoo or a few spoons of soda to the bucket. Branches of repellent herbs or citrus peels are placed in the corners of the house.
Breeding from pets
Bars insecticidal drops for killing fleas on pets.
The best way to poison fleas on animals is with products from pet stores. There are pet shampoos that are safe for pets and effective against fleas, collars treated with insecticides, and drops that are applied to the animal’s withers.
The easiest way is to use drops:
- "Hearts"
- "Frontline";
- “Advantage”;
- "Leopard";
- “Stronghold”;
- “Delix.”
Veterinarians recommend safe and not the most expensive products “Delix” and “Bars”.
Vet pharmacies sell pet shampoos for the treatment and prevention of flea infestations. You cannot use the products often, as they contain insecticides in low concentrations. The best shampoos for dogs and cats are “Bars”, “Fitoelita”, “Doctor Zoo”, “Lugovoy”.
Collars are not as reliable as drops or pet shampoos. Sometimes pets protest against this decoration and remove it at any opportunity.
But if the animal agrees to wear a collar, you can use:
- Bayer;
- "Leopard";
- “Kiltyx.”
If your pet cannot tolerate a collar and does not like to wash itself, it can be treated with flea spray.
It is possible to get rid of parasites at any degree of infection with the help of the drugs “Frontline”, “Bars”, “Bolfo”, “Clandestine”.
Sprays help quickly, but not all pets can tolerate their strong smell. To ensure that the animal stands still during treatment, a special collar can be placed around its neck.
How to remove genital fleas
Their presence in the apartment can be detected by observing the behavior of pets. They are the first to receive the bites of these insects. In order to prevent the spread of these insects to the human body, you should immediately begin removing the parasites.
The whole process will be divided into three stages.
Fig. 3 - Life activity of fleas
- The fight must begin by eliminating fleas from the body of pets. In fact, they themselves are in most cases carriers of parasites. And removing the reasons is half the success of the entire event.
- Next, you should kill the fleas in the apartment. To do this, you should use chemicals.
- And after you have succeeded in exterminating the fleas themselves, it is necessary to get rid of the larvae, eggs, pupae that are located under baseboards, floor crevices, on upholstered furniture, on carpets, in places where moisture creates conditions for this - that is, where insects preferred to hide.
As a final method of control, general cleaning is required, including thorough washing of baseboards and other problem areas with disinfectants.
Methods that use folk remedies help to more effectively remove insect residues and do without chemicals.
Removing parasites from pets
To get rid of fleas from our pets - cats and dogs - the following remedies are used.
Form | Application |
Drops that are applied to the withers of the animal. | Contains ingredients that can kill insects. They are applied specifically to the withers in order to make it impossible for the animal to lick off these active substances. |
Flea sprays. | An effective remedy. If you treat your pet with it, the insects hatch very quickly. The selection of sprays should take into account the weight and age of the animal. An effective way to avoid licking the fur when using it is to put a special collar on the animal. |
Flea shampoo. | This is the gentlest and safest method for removing parasites from a pet's body. There is a wide selection of such products on the market. |
Flea collar. | Purchasing cat and dog collars is becoming a popular method of prevention. Animals quickly get used to them, and all that remains is to change this preventive accessory approximately once every three months after their expiration date. |
It is more effective if you use them in combination: for example, drops + collar, shampoo + collar. Almost all products are presented as harmless, but when used they require some caution so that there is no overdose of the active substance and the animal is not harmed.
