How to revive a mink coat from last year
When the cold weather passes, we, without looking, put away warm clothes in a closet or pantry, at best, in a cover. But then winter returns, and the fur coat doesn’t look so good, and it smells even worse. We will not deal with who is to blame, but we will help with advice on what to do.
Don't risk using products like gasoline or hydrogen peroxide unless you're sure you'll do it right. Treasure your fur coat - take it to a special studio. We will advise you on how to refresh your fur before the new season.
If you are confident that you can do it on your own, you will nevertheless need a special fur brush (not to be confused with an animal brush) and an adsorbent such as sawdust or bran.
In the photo: a special brush for combing fur.
Gently and not too much shake the fur coat and pat it lightly, thus getting rid of dust and fine dirt. Depending on the degree of contamination of the fur, we do not recommend doing this indoors to prevent dust from settling in your home. As a last resort, use the bathroom.
Brush the fur well with a brush in the direction of the pile and carefully inspect the fur coat for stains and wrinkled fur.
In the first case, sprinkle the pile with a small amount of sawdust and gently rub it between your palms so that the dirt is absorbed. Then shake off the adsorbent and remove any remaining residue with a brush. In the second case, use a damp fur coat to get the fibers wet. Remember, you don’t need to wet your fur coat too much, it won’t do it any good, wet the required area only slightly. Brush the fur with a brush and let dry. After this, shake again.

Throw away contaminated cereals and use clean ones until they stop changing color.
- Petrol. Use it to clean stains from dark fur. To do this, take a cotton sponge, soak it in liquid and wipe off the stains in the direction of hair growth. Then the product is well dried and ventilated in the shade.

Drying
However, try not to let your mink coat get too wet. And when drying the product, do not use too high temperatures. There is a misconception that a wet mink will dry perfectly in a very hot room. When mink fur is subjected to sudden drying, it takes on a dull appearance and the inside becomes hard.
How to give a new look to a mouton
A mouton fur coat requires careful handling. This is due to the peculiar structure of the fur. Therefore, it needs special care, and the choice of products depends on the nature of the contamination.
Coffee mouton
With your own hands you can update a mouton fur coat by outputting:
- Oily spots. Dip a soft brush into a mixture of equal parts of vinegar, alcohol and water and comb the contaminated fur in the direction of hair growth. Excess moisture is removed with a paper towel, then the mouton coat is dried and combed.
- Old stains. The contaminated area is treated with a steamer. Ammonia is mixed with water (1:4), soaked in a cotton sponge and wiped over the fur. Then the mouton is dried and combed.
- Common pollution. Sprinkle the fur with high-quality starch (it’s better to put it on the table). Then rub it in with stroking and kneading movements of the palms. The starch that has absorbed the dirt darkens, after which the mouton product is immediately shaken out and sprinkled with clean powder again. This is repeated until the starch is white. Then the item is combed out with a brush.

Another very popular option for outerwear is the astrakhan fur coat. Such products are most often made from dark-colored skins, but light-colored models are also available. Regardless of the color, the astrakhan item also needs periodic updating. It is not recommended to clean such things on your own at home - at a minimum you can damage the structure of the curls, and at maximum you can completely deform the product, ruining its appearance.

But in case of emergency, you can use soap foam. Shampoo for curly hair or shampoo for dogs with curly hair is suitable for these purposes. The foam is applied to a soft sponge and carefully applied to the astrakhan surface. After 20 minutes, wipe the product with a clean, damp sponge. Afterwards, the product is blotted with a dry towel and dried.
Important! Water should not get on the inside - this can turn a still quite good fur coat into an irreparably damaged item.
How to repair it yourself
If you have the necessary skills, it is quite possible to repair a fur coat yourself. However, to do this, it is necessary to determine the nature of the damage.

How to sew an armpit seam
The armpits are considered a weak point. In this area, fur coats often deteriorate. To cope with the defect, you should take the following:
- glue Moment;
- bandage;
- needles;
- threads that match the fur in shade.
The simplest damage that can be easily repaired is the tearing of clothing at the seam. In this situation, it is recommended to stitch the fastening area 2 times. It is also necessary to secure the threads of the previous seam well so that it does not unravel again.
If the product is torn and the skin is damaged, you will have to use a bandage and glue. It is worth restoring the model as accurately as possible. Thanks to this, the defect will not be noticeable.
What to do if the membrane is torn
The causes of damage to the flesh include poor-quality dressing of the skin and old age of the fur. Damage to the underside of the model is a consequence of improper care. To cope with the problem, simply sew up the fur. For this purpose, it is recommended to choose a furrier's stitch. To do this you should do the following:
- Fold the flesh. In this case, the pile should be directed inward.
- Sew from right to left. This stitch resembles a regular overlock stitch. The key difference is that the needle is stuck into the same area twice. As a result, the connection area from the inside becomes almost flat.
- After the darning is completed, the fur coat should be unrolled and the seam smoothed with a moistened thimble.
By following these simple steps, you will be able to make the fixation area as invisible as possible. If suturing the mesh fails and it continues to tear, the material will need to be strengthened. To do this, it is recommended to stick a thin strip of leather or textile onto the damaged surface. It is not recommended to use superglue for this purpose as it will crack in the area of the tear.
A good option would be to use a casein solution. This substance is sold in almost all hardware stores and has an affordable price.
To glue a fur coat made of rabbit, nutria or mink, you can use Moment glue. A piece of soft and thin tissue must be applied to the affected area. Thanks to this, it will be possible to make the seam much more reliable.

How to seal a hole in a seam
If a certain element breaks in the seam area, you can repair the product yourself. To do this, it is recommended to do the following:
- Add the affected items.
- Place gauze or similar cloth on top.
- Secure all elements with pins.
- Fasten all the parts together using Moment glue. Another solution that is designed for gluing leather or suede is also suitable for this purpose.
If the procedure is performed correctly, it will be possible to restore the seam. Thanks to this, it will serve for a long period of time.
Installing a patch on a large hole
Fur clothing often tears on the sleeve or back. To deal with a large hole, it is worth installing a patch. To begin with, it is recommended to tear off the lining and remove the insulation. Then you should cut out the patch and place it on the affected area.
After which it is sewn to the area of the tear. To do this, it is recommended to use threads that match the color of the fur. The patch may be sewn with a marking stitch. After completing the repair, it is recommended to tap the damaged area with a wooden hammer. This will help make the fur noticeably smoother.
If the sleeve is damaged, it is recommended to open the side seam. It is then recommended to rip the lining apart. If the damage has smooth edges, it is permissible to make repairs yourself. In other cases, it is recommended to contact a specialist.
If a tear appears under the armpit, you should insert a piece of fur into the damaged area and sew it well. Such a fragment can be bought in a workshop or cut from another product. If the hole is small, you can use soft glue. In this case, rubber solution is perfect. The easiest way to repair products is from astrakhan fur. This fur has a fibrous texture. Thanks to this, it is possible to obtain an invisible seam.
When to clean fur?
Each fur product has its own service life. For example, fur coats wear out more than hats and vests. Do not forget that the period of wearing fur outerwear directly depends on the type of raw materials used. A mink coat can be worn for about 7 years, a rabbit coat can be worn for up to 3 years, but the most durable fur is beaver and otter fur - up to 20 years of wear. By the appearance of the fibers, you can easily determine the degree of contamination and identify fiber violations in time.
The fur of animals needs to be cleaned in the following cases:
- If numerous dusty contaminants with plaque are found on the surface.
- The color and structure of the edge became uneven.
- Particles of debris have accumulated between the villi.
- If the fur is matted, looks dull, and has double ends.
Important! In cases of severe damage to the edge, for example, there are creases, abrasions and partial absence of fibers, you should seek the services of experienced specialists. Such defects cannot be eliminated independently using folk remedies.
Store your fur coat correctly
In order for your favorite fur coat to serve you for a long time, preserving its original beauty, you should know the rules for storing fur products:
- Take the time to store your mink in a special fur refrigerator. It is thanks to the low temperature and humidity of such equipment that the edge will remain as attractive as when purchasing the product.
- If you have the means, you can organize storage at home in a regular refrigerator or in a separate freezer. When sending the product into the refrigerator with food, the packaging must be very strong and airtight so that the fibers do not absorb foreign odors, and such cellophane packaging is destructive for a fur coat.
- It is better to place the fur item in a cool, dark place in a special fabric cover with special anti-moth impregnation. The temperature in this room should be no higher than 12 degrees, and the humidity should be appropriate for the type of fur. It is advisable that the mink coat does not come into contact with other things in the closet, and even more so with the fur of other products.
How to restore the shine of fur?
If your favorite fur coat has lost its former shine and its attractive appearance is not so beautiful, then this means that the hairs have lost their natural fatty composition. First of all, the product needs to return the original fatty layer to the product. We recommend using several proven methods to restore the shine of fur:
- The easiest and most affordable way to restore the shine of a fur coat is using a solution with glycerin, lemon juice or citric acid. Any of the above ingredients must be applied to a cloth and treated with it on the fur product. After cleaning, the lint should be wiped with a dry cloth.
Important! It is useful to treat artificial fur from time to time with special antistatic aerosols. They will protect the edge well from contamination and remove accumulated electrostatic charges, which attract dust.
- A solution based on pork or fish oil. To prepare it, take 100 grams of liquid fat, 1 liter of hot water and 10 grams of toilet soap. All ingredients are mixed until completely dissolved, then cooled to 35 degrees, ammonia is added here - 12 drops. The solution must be applied to the fur; there is no need to rinse it off.
- There is another very good way that will help restore not only its former shine, but also thoroughly clean a dirty fur coat. We are talking about using refined gasoline with starch. All ingredients must be mixed until mushy, applied to the fur, allowed to dry, and then shake out the remaining mixture well.
- A long-lasting shine can be given to a mink product with vinegar or alcohol with the addition of water in equal proportions. You can also rub the villi with ordinary table vinegar essence. To do this, wear gloves and wipe the fur with a cloth or gauze previously soaked in vinegar.
Important! Do not forget about safety measures - the effect of the solution must be checked from the reverse side, and after a positive result, feel free to work with the outer pile.
- You probably didn’t expect to see walnuts among the ingredients presented, but they can really restore the shine to a mink coat. To do this, grind the walnut into crumbs, tie it in gauze or a bandage and wipe the edges with a bag, moving in the direction of the pile. The former shine will be restored thanks to the powerful nut oil.
Important! Use this method exclusively on dark-colored items.
- The easiest way to restore shine to a mink is to comb the pile with a wire brush.
Important! You should always remember that any procedure to return the fur to its former overflow (especially using gasoline or vinegar) should be carried out superficially, without getting on the flesh. Otherwise, a strong composition can greatly dry out and make the skin of the product brittle, so it is extremely important to treat only the outer pile of the edge. But glycerin will not damage the structure of the flesh, but, on the contrary, will make it clean and soft.
