How much does it cost to stretch shoes in a workshop and can it be done at home? Review +Video

Over the years of work in the service sector, in particular shoe repair services, the Old Master household service center has accumulated extensive experience in repairing various shoes. Shoes are an integral part of the wardrobe of each of us.

Like any thing, over time our favorite shoes break down - it’s time to take them to our shoe repair shop, where professional craftsmen will perform all the necessary manipulations, such as installing patches, heel guards, heels, spikes, heel pads, insoles, half-insoles or replacement of instep supports, heels, buttons, Velcro, elastic bands, soles, zippers (with a cut in the boot) in order to return your item almost to its original condition.

It’s funny, but just recently repair shops were not particularly popular, however, many people strive to keep their favorite pair for as long as possible, extending its service life in every possible way if necessary. Our company's specialists are ready to repair shoes of any complexity.

We work with shoes of all brands and are ready to take on any job. The quality of the work we perform every day can be judged by the large number of reviews and the photo reports section.

Treatment of shoes with wax, fat, glycerin

Shoe treatment is used to maintain the flexibility of shoes, and, as a result, extend their service life. In general terms, the process goes something like this: the shoes are coated with oil until it lingers on the surface of the leather before being absorbed, after which the shoes are left to dry. This process can take a long time, up to two to three days.

Elimination of sole and insoles fractures, as well as repair of broken soles and insoles

Each shoe has its own individual tread - it can be either smooth or textured. If the first type of repair is not difficult, then the second type is not so simple. Often, the repair process looks like this: at the very beginning, the master grinds the sole of the shoe at the fracture site, after which the place is stitched with thread, and a special sticker is glued to the seam - “prevention”.

How to stretch shoes at home?

You can correct uncomfortable shoes at home, using improvised means. - Boiling water. The fastest way to stretch your shoes yourself. Pour hot, boiling water over the shoes in which you are uncomfortable and pour some inside. Wait a little until the shoes cool down to a tolerable state and put them on, walk in them for about half an hour and during this time the material may be deformed exactly to fit your foot. - Alcohol. Soak a cotton pad or cloth with alcohol-containing liquid and wipe your favorite shoes inside and out. Put them on a thin sock and wear them until the moisture disappears.

- Castor oil or Vaseline. The principle of using both of these substances is the same - treat an uncomfortable pair with them inside and out, put them on your bare feet and, enduring the unpleasant sensations, stay in them for 20 minutes. It is also one of the fastest methods of stretching shoes compared to others. - Steam. A painstaking method - you need to hold an uncomfortable shoe over boiling water so that it is evenly heated from all sides by the heat of the steam. Next, we put it on the sock and walk for half an hour.

ATTENTION! This method can be dangerous, since you can actually get burned by too hot steam.

- Warm socks. The most famous method of how to stretch shoes at home. We put on the unlucky shoes on a thick sock and walk as long as we have enough patience, then, after giving our feet a rest, we repeat the action several times. - Vinegar. Wipe your shoes, boots or boots from the inside with a three percent solution and leave it like that for 10 hours. Then try on the shoes - if they still feel tight, then repeat the manipulation again. - Paraffin. We rub shoes in tight places with a regular candle and leave them for 8-10 hours, most conveniently overnight. Then wipe it off and try it on; if nothing has changed, it is advisable to rub it again, repeating the procedure three times.

- Newspapers. We also wet uncomfortable shoes and press the newspapers tightly inside, leaving them like that for 3 hours. If the shoes are not dry, then we tamp a new batch of newspapers, throwing out the old one. After drying, you need to try on a pair and if it does not become more comfortable, you can repeat everything again or move on to other methods of stretching shoes.

- Cold way. Suitable only for shoes made of high-quality material. We put well-tied disposable bags of cold water into a tight pair and place the shoes/boots/shoes in the freezer. As water freezes, it will expand and stretch the shoes. So you need to keep it for 4 hours and when removing the packages, be careful so as not to damage your favorite item.

Strengthening soles and heels

The heel is the most vulnerable part of any shoe. The design of the heel itself depends on its height, as well as the material used in manufacturing. For example, leather heels are made from fleeks - special leather scraps - to which a fender is attached, thereby creating a kind of depression on the upper surface, which must exactly correspond to the heel bulge of the shoe.

With plastic heels, the situation is completely different: when making a heel, nylon or any other thermoplastic mass is used, which, using injection molding, turns into a finished heel. The repair methods for different types of heels will naturally be different.

Professional methods: workshop and stretcher

The easiest and most reliable way to give a pair of shoes the most comfortable shape is to have them stretched at a shoe studio.

Many workshops today have equipment that allows you to stretch shoes in width in the foot or in the boot, including locally, which is required if a person has bulging areas on the foot. Moreover, even an uncomfortable rise can be corrected.

The only thing that the workshop will not undertake is stretching the shoes lengthwise, since in this case the size is determined by the fastening seams. You can only increase the width of the shoes or stretch the heel.

A shoe stretcher uses special equipment, including a set of lasts that are adjustable in width using screws and have the ability to attach small attachments to them that imitate bulges in a particular area of the foot. For this reason, the result lives up to expectations, and the shoes themselves do not deteriorate, even if they are made of thin leather.

If for some reason you do not have the opportunity to take your shoes to a workshop to correct their size, then you can try to make them more comfortable yourself.

Thus, you can order lasts via the Internet similar to those used in workshops, and purchase sprays or foams at a shoe store that are specially designed for fitting shoes to your feet.

Individual tailoring of shoes

It is worth noting that, recently, individual tailoring of shoes has become increasingly popular - in addition to the original design chosen by the buyer himself, such shoes always fit you perfectly in size and will not cause absolutely any inconvenience while walking. However, the production of such shoes has its own characteristics, and, like every pair produced at the factory, the process of tailoring an individual order is divided into many components. Naturally, such shoes are made using specialized equipment, however, some details of the future model can be worked out manually by the master himself. Let's take a closer look at the process.

Before the master begins making shoes to order, all the details of the future product are discussed, such as preferred materials, style, production time, as well as the final cost of the finished pair. Often, after this, the master makes a 3D model of the future pair, where the client clearly gets an idea of the product being manufactured. Speaking about the cost, it is worth noting that it is always purely individual, and is calculated both on the basis of the cost of materials for sewing and on the basis of the time spent on sewing.

Individual tailoring of shoes also eliminates many problems associated with non-standard foot sizes; fortunately, before starting production, the master must take measurements of the client’s feet. In general terms, the process goes something like this: first, the client stands on a sheet of paper with both feet, after which the master traces the contours of the foot with a pencil.

Next, to create an individual size, measure the distance from the outer edge of the foot to the inner edge, passing through the highest point of the arch, located near the bend of the foot. The master also necessarily measures the circumference of the straight instep of the foot. For this, a measuring tape is used, which is also used to determine the fullness of the foot. An important detail is also the fitting of shoes - this allows you to adjust some parameters, thereby achieving exactly the result that the master agreed on with the client.
