What is used to beat out the carpet? We beat out the carpet correctly: how, where and what is the best way to do it? Doubts and clarifications

With the onset of winter, when there is frost outside and fresh fluffy snow falls, it becomes possible to clean and refresh carpets in a natural way that has been proven over many years - cleaning carpets with snow. Many have heard and know about this useful method of cleaning carpets in winter, especially since you don’t need to buy carpet cleaning products, spend extra money and time, everything is simple and easy, the main thing is to know how to properly clean a carpet with snow and in what order.

Cleaning carpet with snow in winter

- an ancient way to clean thick fleecy fabric from dust, dirt and even germs.
Despite the fact that today carpets do not fully fulfill their original role, because now floors can be insulated in several different ways, carpets still create coziness in a room, which is why they are still used in everyday life. Therefore, it is imperative to know how to wash and clean a carpet correctly, because dense pile collects dirt and develops microbes. In some cases, there may even be ticks in the carpet, which can lead to serious health problems for family members.
Despite the fact that cleaning a carpet with snow seems possible only in outdoor conditions, it can be done even at home. We'll look at both carpet cleaning options in the sections below.

Cleaning the carpet with snow

So where should you start cleaning your carpet? Regardless of which method is chosen, the following rules should be followed when cleaning the carpet:

  1. Before you start cleaning the carpet with snow, the household item must be thoroughly cleaned of dirt and dust, and it is best to knock it out. This is because if snow cleaning is done incorrectly, the pollution situation will only get worse.
  2. If possible, try to go as far as possible from the city and industrial zone. It is best to choose holiday villages or forests for carpet cleaning.
  3. It is very important that the snow is only fallen and loose; you should not use snow that has become crusty when cleaning the carpet.
  4. Remember, the faster you clean your carpet with snow, the better and better the result will be.
  5. Do not use additional detergents or household chemicals when cleaning the carpet with snow: this will only worsen the situation with contamination.

These basic rules apply to both methods of cleaning a carpet with snow; now let’s look at the options in more detail.

.

On the street

There is nothing easier than properly and effectively cleaning a carpet with snow outside. To do this, just choose a frosty day, preferably if the snow fell no earlier than two days ago

. Having vacuumed the carpet in advance, you need to roll it up and take it outside. When choosing a workplace, give preference to those areas where in the summer there is clean and level ground without grass. The ideal option would be to clean the carpet on an asphalt surface.

First, lay out the carpet face down, then carefully cover the surface with snow and begin to beat out the carpet with very quick movements using a plastic beater. Try to go over the entire surface of the carpet evenly.

After this, the carpet must be carefully transferred to clean snow. Try not to drag the rug so that the dirty snow does not drag along behind you, but enlist the help of a family member to carefully lift and move the rug to a new place.

Now we lay out the carpet face up, and then repeat the manipulations described above. Try to walk on the carpet as little as possible while cleaning, if possible.

After you have thoroughly beaten the carpet, use a broom or wide brush with stiff bristles to sweep away any remaining snow from the front side of the carpet. If the carpet is small, you can lift it and thus remove the remaining snow. If the rug is quite large, simply throw it over the horizontal bar and knock it out thoroughly again.

For some time, the carpet can be left outside so that it is saturated with fresh frosty air.

Remember that for high-quality cleaning, the carpet must be knocked out. In this case, you will even observe how dust, dirt and other debris remain in the snow under the carpet. If you clean the carpet only with a brush, worrying about the material or structure of the carpet, the desired effect will not be achieved. In addition, such cleaning may take a long time, and then the carpet will become saturated with snow, which will subsequently melt and be absorbed into the fabric, which will negatively affect the condition of the carpet.

If you are too concerned that the plastic beating will warp the carpet, use terry cloth, such as a towel, as a pad. This method is more labor-intensive, but certainly does not have any negative consequences.

After such cleaning, the carpet will not only be cleaned and acquire a pleasant aroma, but will also sparkle with new colors.

At home

If the carpet is too large and it is not possible to take it outside, you can clean the carpet with snow at home. To do this, follow the following sequence of actions:

  1. First, we need to carry out preparatory activities. It is imperative to lay thick polyethylene on the floor in the room in which the cleaning will take place.
  2. Do not forget that before cleaning the carpet you need to vacuum it thoroughly.
  3. A few hours before the start of cleaning, open the windows in the room so that it can be ventilated. This will also reduce the temperature in the room, which, in turn, is very important for cleaning the carpet with snow at home.
  4. We collect several buckets of fresh and clean snow from the street, after which we begin the cleaning process. Sprinkle the surface of the carpet with snow, and then, by analogy with the previous method, knock out the carpet evenly. Upon completion of the procedure, it is necessary to remove the remaining snow.
To do this, you can use a vacuum cleaner with a flag cleaning function or an ordinary broom. In the case of the second option, remember that there will be a lot of dirt, which will also have to be removed later.
  5. We carefully lift the carpet, for which we will again need additional help, remove the dirty polyethylene, wash the floor if possible and cover it with new, clean oilcloth. Turn the rug over face down and place it on the plastic. Now we again need to cover the surface with snow and knock it out. This should be done carefully, because strong mechanical stress can damage the pile.
Upon completion of the procedure, we clean the carpet from any remaining snow, remove the film and leave the carpet to dry for a while. At the same time, you should not close the windows to the room.

This method is not as effective as cleaning a carpet outside, but it is possible if the carpet is very massive. In any other situation, try to move the rug outside.

After cleaning the carpets with snow, you need to dry them at room temperature so that the pile heats up gradually: this way the moisture will come out and evaporate naturally.

It is useful to clean the carpet with snow at least once a year in order to refresh the pile, as well as to destroy pests, such as moths or ticks, that may have gotten into the fabric. Having studied the material provided, now you know how to carry out the procedure correctly at home and on the street.

With the advent of steamers, washing vacuum cleaners, and safe chemical products, cleaning carpets correctly and efficiently has become much easier. Despite this, some people prefer to knock out heavily soiled items outside, most often in the courtyard. This manipulation is very effective; if you do it at least twice a year, you don’t have to worry about the freshness of the air in the apartment.

The approach has only two negative points. Firstly, the manipulation is quite specific and few people carry it out according to all the rules, hence the not the best result. Secondly, recently there has been controversy over the legality of cleaning carpets in the courtyards of residential buildings.

Is it possible to beat carpets in the yard outside?

If just a few years ago everyone could beat out their carpets in the courtyard of the house, and for this purpose special stands in the form of horizontal bars with massive crossbars were even placed on the street, today the situation has changed dramatically. Understanding why events suddenly became banned, we can highlight the following points:

  1. Dust, dirt, particles of various aerosols and chemical products accumulated in the pile enter the atmosphere, which negatively affects the environment and even contributes to the destruction of the ozone layer. To avoid this, you must prevent the distribution of the listed components. To do this, you can simply cover the carpet with a damp sheet before the beating process.
  2. The dirt flying away from the processing of the product can settle on the clothes of others, washed clothes (some people still dry it in the yard), and items from the playground. A wet sheet also prevents or minimizes this moment, but before starting treatment it is better to assess all risk factors and knock the carpet away from people.
  3. Noise. In a busy courtyard not far from a busy road, no one will pay attention to the characteristic claps. And in a secluded enclosed courtyard with a minimal noise level, there are bound to be dissatisfied people. For this reason, it is better to clean carpets in the daytime, and not in the early morning, and on weekdays, and not on weekends.

There are no laws prohibiting this particular manipulation. But there are provisions that do not allow the cultivation of dirt in the courtyard of a residential building. Therefore, it is unlikely that it will be possible to carry out cleaning without hindrance if one of the neighbors does not agree to it.

Can all carpets be beaten in the yard?

All further recommendations assume that readers have the legal right to beat carpets, but do not know which carpets can and cannot be beaten in the yard. In fact, there are only two restrictions - the material used to make the carpets and the current state of the products.

According to the first point, it is necessary to “weed out” all products made from delicate materials. With intense beating, they can stretch and tear. Everything about the condition is also obvious. It is better not to knock out carpets that are torn, torn or otherwise damaged. It is better to order professional carpet dry cleaning in Vladivostok and remove all stains chemically. The carpets will be noticeably more durable and last longer.

How to beat out a carpet - professional and improvised tools

Several factors go into choosing the right carpet beating tool. You will have to take into account not only the density of the product, but also the time of year, the length of the pile, and the degree of its contamination.

  • To efficiently remove a carpet in winter, you need to take a special tool with rubberized elements. It will not freeze or crack in the cold, ensuring high-quality workmanship of the product.
  • In the summer you can get by with a plastic tool, the main thing is that it is sufficiently flexible.
  • You can use sticks, mops and other available means, but only to remove the main dirt. They will easily get rid of sand between the fibers, but will not completely remove dust deposits.

Tip: Rattan beaters are very popular today. Some housewives weave them themselves and regularly update the devices. Such products are environmentally friendly, allow you to quickly and thoroughly beat out the carpet, do not break and bend well, without harming the pile.

The area of the instrument also plays an important role. Small carpets and items with delicate textures can be processed with massive beaters. They will allow you to work through the material fairly quickly, spending a minimum of time and effort. But for massive products, it would be correct to take a beater with a small working area.

You will have to spend more time on the work, but this way the carpet will really be cleaned to the maximum. When using a large tool, you will either have to apply a lot of force and in a few minutes it will run out, or all the dust will simply move into the upper layers of the pile.

How to beat out a carpet if you don't have a beater?

Some people who are interested in how to beat a carpet correctly are faced with the problem of not having a beater and are looking for options to replace it. In general, there are few solutions. The best option is to buy a beater (its simple version will cost 50-300 rubles). If the solution does not suit you, you can use improvised means. For example, take a regular stick (of optimal weight and not sharp). You can also use any elongated wooden header, preferably one with a rounded edge, to cover a larger area of the rug. The main thing is that the chosen product does not damage the carpet. If in doubt, it is better not to think about beating out the carpet if you don’t have a beater, but to go to the store and buy the required products. This step will have a positive effect on the condition of the carpets.

How to beat out a carpet correctly - features of different approaches

Regardless of the season in which the treatment is carried out, there are several rules, the observance of which allows you to beat out carpets efficiently and quickly:

  1. The yard should be dry and windless. If the action takes place in winter, then light snow is allowed.
  2. Before starting treatment, the carpet must be vacuumed on both sides using a dry method. Then we roll it up with the pile inside and take it outside. In the yard, you need to inspect the horizontal bar for any protruding elements and wipe it off from dirt. Few people know that carpets can also be cut on a horizontal surface, for example, on dense grass or a short-cut lawn.
  3. We hang or lay out the product with the pile down, and begin to knock it out with short, frequent blows without applying significant force. We act consistently, moving from top to bottom. This is the only way to prevent dust from moving to neighboring areas.
  4. Maximum efficiency can be achieved by working as a team. While one person knocks out one part of the product, the second can lift the carpet by the opposite end, this will protect it from dust and dirt.
  5. After achieving the desired result, it is recommended to turn the product upside down and knock it out again, but only from the inside. It is generally better not to use a beater on the pile. Only very dirty carpets can be knocked out from the front side, after covering them with a damp sheet.
  6. The final stage of processing will be superficial cleaning of the item on both sides with a slightly damp brush.

During the winter months, snow is used to enhance the cleansing effect. It is applied generously to the surface of the laid out product, after which the carpet is knocked out and the remaining snow is swept away. It will be correct to carry out the approach on both sides of the functional device; this is the only way to get rid of all the dirt. If there is not a lot of snow, you can lightly rub the suspended object with it, and then work it with a beater.

The summer equivalent of this approach is to use a damp sheet. The main thing is not to add detergents to the water; clean liquid will return freshness to the pile faster. If the product is saturated with tobacco smoke or other unpleasant odors, then use a very weak vinegar solution. However, after cleaning the carpet will have to be left in the fresh air for several hours so that the pungent odor will disappear from it.

Contrary to popular belief, beating carpets on open balconies is not recommended; it is practically useless. The item must be blown from all sides, only then will it be thoroughly cleaned.

To keep your home tidy and fresh, carpets and rugs should be cleaned at least twice a year. If summer is considered the ideal time for chemical treatment of a product, then in winter it is best to treat the carpet with snow. Contrary to popular belief, there may be several options for the approach; if desired, the manipulation can be carried out even at home. Snow cleaning allows you to quickly and efficiently restore the cleanliness and freshness of household items and get rid of harmful microorganisms and mites.

Regardless of the type of manipulation, you must adhere to the following rules:

  1. Treatment is carried out only with loose, soft snow without crust. In this case, the mass should not be in a thawed state, and the carpet should not be allowed to get wet.
  2. It is best to use a freshly fallen product that has not yet become covered with slag and gas exhaust.
  3. Before starting the procedure, carpets and rugs need to be vacuumed, you can even knock them out additionally.
  4. The active stage of processing must be carried out as quickly as possible. If the product is very large, it is better to clean it in parts so that the pile does not have time to get wet.

Tip: Dealing with a massive carpet on your own is quite difficult. It’s better to take on the treatment in a large group, distributing the areas between everyone, then the risk of the item getting wet is minimal.

  1. When treating a carpet with snow, you should not use industrial or homemade detergents. If the product is too dirty, it must first be cleaned chemically and exposed to snow a couple of days after that.

If the manipulation is carried out correctly, positive changes will be immediately obvious. After this, it is recommended to keep the product in the cold for at least a day, hanging it on a durable stand.

How to knock out a carpet

Looking at how carpets are beaten, sometimes one gets the wrong idea about this process. It seems there is nothing complicated: you stand there and hit the fleecy sides of the carpet with a stick. In reality, everything is more complicated; you need to knock it out correctly. Special plastic beaters are best suited for this, but they cannot be used in severe frost; in winter, rubberized accessories are preferable.

If there are no such devices, a strong stick will do, but it will take longer to wield it.

Before cleaning, you can cover the carpet with a damp old sheet: the dust will remain on it and will not fly towards you or into the windows of nearby apartments.

Let's get started with the cleaning technique. You need to stand behind the wind; people with respiratory diseases are better off either not doing this, or wearing a respirator, a mask made of damp cloth or gauze. Start from the top, visually dividing the carpet into several horizontal stripes. We clean the top strip first, go lower, and so on until the very last one. After doing this on one side, the carpet should be turned over.

Many people believe that only a carpet can provide coziness and comfort in the home. Indeed, the carpet pleasantly warms the feet, pleases the eye with colors, and children can play on it comfortably and safely. Carpets muffle neighbors' and own noises. In gratitude for all this, the carpet requires one thing - care.

Old carpets are less difficult to maintain and require less care. This can be explained by the fact that during their production there was also a testing stage: carpets woven from wool were soaked, ironed, dried and weathered so that they became resistant to physical influences and did not shrink after washing. Modern carpets are released for sale without this stage.

Vacuum cleaner and brush

Therefore, when buying a new carpet, remember: it is better to clean it with a soft brush or broom for the first six months. Small fibers may collect on them, there is no need to be afraid of this: this removes the loose fibers that remained when cutting the pile surface. Only after the carpet pile has become sufficiently compacted can you use a vacuum cleaner to clean it.

Here are the rules that are equally important for cleaning both new and old carpets:

Do not clean the carpet against the pile - this is not only inconvenient, but can also damage its texture.

It is better to brush only short-pile carpets. Long bristled brushes can catch and cause damage.

Beater and broom

If you are going to “knock out” a carpet in the yard, then remember: you can only hang it on a thick round crossbar and in no case on a rope or fence - otherwise you can damage the threads of the frame. In addition, the pile of the carpet should face down. Beat out the dust only with a soft beater (preferably made of twigs) and then clean the carpet with a brush on one side and the other.

The carpet will become brighter if you beat it through a rag soaked in a solution of vinegar (1 tablespoon per 1 liter of water).

In winter, the carpet is laid on the snow with its pile down and lightly beaten out. If there is a dark trace of dust left on the snow, the carpet must be moved to the side and knocked out again. The procedure is repeated until the snow remains clean. Then the carpet is turned over, the pile surface is cleared of snow with a brush or broom and rolled into a roll. You cannot fold the carpet!

To clean the carpet, you can use one of the special liquid products. There are a lot of them on sale now, you can choose what you need specifically. Some products not only clean carpets, but also protect them from moths and carpet beetles for several months.

Traditional methods

1. Scatter fine table salt over the carpet and sweep it with a broom previously soaked in hot soapy water or a weak solution of washing powder (1/2 teaspoon per 1 liter of water). Contaminated salt must be replaced with fresh salt several times. Remaining salt can be removed with a vacuum cleaner. Instead of salt, you can use dried tea leaves or sawdust.

The main condition for cleaning a carpet in the snow is clean, freshly fallen snow on a frosty day, so that it is free of ice, loose and not wet.

If the previous condition is met, then feel free to roll up the carpets and choose a place on the street where the cleaning will be done. It is necessary to choose a place with a clean snow surface and sufficient area for cleaning the carpets, since you will need to move them several times to a new clean place.

We spread the carpets with the pile down on the snow and sprinkle snow on top and begin to beat them out and just walk on them so that dirt and fine dust come out of the fibers.

We move the carpets to a new place and repeat these procedures, this needs to be done several times until the snow under the carpet, after knocking it out, becomes clean, this will mean that the dust has already come out of the carpets.

After these procedures, the carpets are turned upside down, sprinkled with snow, beaten out and the snow is swept away with a brush or broom.

At the end of cleaning, the carpets are hung on a crossbar or horizontal bar and the snow is knocked out of them; if there is no crossbar, then carefully sweep the snow from the carpet and roll it up.

The last stage of cleaning carpets with snow is to dry it at home. Carpets should be laid out and allowed to warm up at room temperature and dry. The main thing is that the carpets dry well and the moisture leaves the fibers. If there are wet areas on the carpet, it is better to dry them, as described in the article.

Options for cleaning carpet with snow - features of the manipulation

If you can find an impressive area of clean, untrodden snow on the street, then it is better to carry out the procedure in the fresh air. It will look like this:

  • First, spread the carpet face down and sprinkle it generously and evenly with snow. We take a plastic beater and begin to beat out the product over its entire surface with quick movements.
  • Shake off the remaining snow, transfer the product to a clean area and lay it out with the pile facing up. We also sprinkle the surface with snow and begin to knock it out with intense short movements. At the same time, we try not to walk through the pile a lot.
  • Next, shake off the snow again, add new snow and gently but thoroughly sweep it away with a broom or brush with elastic bristles. After this, it is enough to shake off small carpets several times; large ones will have to be thrown over the horizontal bar and beaten thoroughly.

If it is impossible to take a massive product outside, it can be cleaned with snow at home, but this must be done correctly, otherwise there is a risk of rotting of the pile and base.

  • First you need to prepare. In the selected spacious room, we line the floor with oilcloth; it should be slightly larger in area than the carpet. We close the door and open the windows so that the room is well ventilated and the temperature drops a little.
  • We collect a bucket or two of snow, pour a thin layer onto the pile and lightly beat it out. We collect the remaining product with a vacuum cleaner, you just need to make sure that the model is not afraid of water. In a pinch, you can get by with a broom, but there will be a lot of dirt even with oilcloth.
  • We turn the item over with the pile down, replace the oilcloth with a clean one and carry out the same manipulations. The reverse side must be knocked out carefully so as not to greatly deform the pile.
  • We turn the carpet over again, laying it on a clean floor. It is not recommended to walk on it for some time; you need to wait until the item is completely dry.

The second method is best for cleaning massive carpets; in extreme cases, they can be rolled halfway and processed in sections.

Do I need to beat out carpets in the snow or is surface treatment sufficient?

Some housewives doubt that long-pile carpets or delicate materials need to be beaten out. They prefer to clean it only with a brush. Such an approach has a right to exist, but achieving optimal results from it will only be possible by repeating the approaches many times. Even after this, a significant amount of dust will likely remain between the fibers. In this case, the product will have time to get wet through.

If you use beaters made of soft rubberized plastic for impact, then you don’t have to worry about deformation, and the positive effect will be obvious. As a last resort, you can hang the carpet on a stand, take a terry towel, roll it in the snow, cover the carpet and knock the item out through such a layer. This approach is more troublesome, but quite effective and absolutely safe. You just need to work as quickly as possible, changing towels regularly.

To keep your home tidy and clean, rugs and carpets need to be cleaned at least twice a year. If summer is considered the ideal time to carry out chemical treatments on a product, then in winter it is best to clean the carpet in the snow.

Contrary to popular belief, there may be several options for the approach; if desired, this manipulation can be carried out even at home. Cleaning with snow allows you to quickly and efficiently restore the freshness and cleanliness of household items, as well as get rid of harmful microorganisms and mites. Let's look at how to clean a carpet in the snow so as not to spoil the decorative covering and ensure it is perfectly clean.

General rules

To clean your carpet with snow, follow these rules:

  • Treat only with soft, loose snow without crust. At the same time, it should not be in a thawed state - the carpet should not be allowed to get wet.
  • Freshly fallen snow will do the best job of cleaning - it has not yet become covered with slag and gas emissions.
  • Before starting the procedure, rugs and carpets should be vacuumed or beaten.
  • The active cleaning stage should be carried out as quickly as possible. If the product is too large, it is better to clean it in parts so that the pile does not have time to get wet.

Important! It is quite difficult to handle large carpets alone, so it is advisable to take on cleaning in a large group, distributing them among all areas. Thus, the risk of getting wet is significantly reduced.

  • When treating a carpet with snow, do not use homemade or industrial detergents. If the product is too dirty, it should first be cleaned chemically, and only after a couple of days you can start snow cleaning.

After a correctly performed manipulation, positive changes are immediately visible.

Important! You should not bring the carpet into the house immediately after cleaning - keep it in the cold for at least another day, hanging it on a strong stand.

Options for cleaning carpets with snow - features of the procedure:

  • Lay the rug face down and sprinkle it evenly with snow. Take a plastic beater and start quickly knocking the product over its entire surface.
  • Shake off any remaining snow, transfer the product to a clean area and place it with the pile facing up. As before, sprinkle the surface with snow and beat with short but intense movements. Try to walk on the pile as little as possible.
  • Shake off the snow again, add new snow and carefully but gently sweep it away with a brush or broom. After this, it is enough to shake small rugs several times; large ones need to be thrown over the horizontal bar and knocked out well.

If it is impossible to take a product that is too large out of the house, then it can be cleaned with snow at home. However, this must be done correctly, otherwise there is a risk of rotting of the base and pile. So, we clean the carpet with snow at home:

  • In the selected spacious room, cover the floor with oilcloth; its size should be slightly larger than the area of the carpet. Close the door and open the windows so that the room is well ventilated and the temperature drops slightly.
  • Take a couple of buckets of snow, pour it onto the pile and lightly beat it out. Use a vacuum cleaner that is not afraid of water to remove any remaining snow. If you don’t have this in your household, then you can get by with an ordinary broom, but in this case there will be a lot of dirt.
  • Turn the product over with the pile down, replace the oilcloth with a clean one, and carry out the above-described manipulations again. The reverse side should be knocked out carefully so as not to deform the pile.
  • Turn the rug over again and lay it out on the clean floor. It is better not to walk on it for a while - wait until the product is completely dry.

Important! It is better to clean massive carpets in this way; in extreme cases, they should be rolled halfway and cleaned in sections.

Where to beat the carpet?

If you live in your own home with a yard, carpet cleaning is not a problem. Residents of apartment buildings are less fortunate. Small courtyards usually contain public gardens, playgrounds and hangers with laundry for those who do not have a balcony. Beating carpets there is problematic and unethical.

You can find a secluded place in your yard and use a sturdy tree as a knockout stand. But even here you need to be careful with the knockout time.

Pops and hits on the carpet are usually heard far away, so they should not be knocked out in the morning or late evening, but in the second half of the weekday.

An alternative would be special detergents and a vacuum cleaner. They are applied to the coating according to the instructions, then the remaining product and dirt are removed using a vacuum cleaner. If there is an opportunity to take the carpet out into the yard for cleaning, let’s consider the wisdom of cleaning by beating.
