After renovation there are always excess building materials left. Some of them cannot be useful in any way on the farm and are simply thrown away, while some, on the contrary, have many different applications that were invented by folk craftsmen. The latter also includes linoleum, the use of which, in fact, is the subject of this article.

If after repairs you still have pieces or even small trimmings of this flooring, do not rush to throw it away. Below I will tell you some interesting ideas for using it, and you will be convinced that this material is really useful in the household.

Crafts from linoleum

Mousepad

A small piece of linoleum will make an excellent computer mouse pad.

Draw on paper or find it on the Internet and print the desired stencil. Circle it, applying it to the wrong side of the linoleum. Cut along the outline. That's it, the mat is ready.

By spending a few minutes, you will receive a high-quality item of the shape you like with an original color, while also saving on the purchase of a new rug.

Crafts

Pieces of facing material make excellent:

  • slippers - there are never too many of them, especially at the dacha;
  • coverings for steps and veranda floors, including those laid out from pieces;
  • knife sheath;
  • cases for phones, tablets;
  • insoles for shoes;
  • soles for felt slippers - sew pieces of linoleum to street slippers so that they do not get wet from moisture.

Linoleum for upholstery of steps, floors in the shower and toilet should be laid across the course. This is necessary to prevent slipping and not falling.

Convenient tool organizer

Sew an organizer with pockets for storing tools from linoleum scraps.

Cut out two rectangular pieces: one for the base of the organizer, the second for the pockets. The second rectangle should be narrower, but longer than the first.

Mark the width of the pockets on the base. Decide on their volume. Tools with thick handles will require looser pockets. For screwdrivers and scissors - flat so that the tools do not slip or fall out from below.

Align the left sides of the rectangles and use an awl and strong thread to sew them together. Making allowances for sufficient volume of pockets, sew the top rectangle to the base along all the marked lines.

To keep the pieces from shifting as you sew, bring the bottom edges together and secure with paper clips, removing them as you go. For convenience, use a thick rubber backing when making punctures with an awl.

Attach the organizer to the wall of your workshop or garage and place your tools - now they will always be at hand.

Floor mat

If you have several scraps of linoleum of different colors left, then make an original floor mat from them.

Cut out squares or rectangles and fold them in a checkerboard or other pattern. Join the edges using a special adhesive called liquid welding.

This rug looks unusual and is easy to clean. It will decorate the hallway, veranda or summer kitchen.

Practical and functional solutions

The remains of the new linoleum can be used for its intended purpose: to make a mosaic covering. There should be enough of these pieces to cover a certain area (the floor of a balcony, bathroom, corridor). If there is a lot of material left, you can cut out identical squares and lay them on glue in a checkerboard pattern. You can cut rectangles and squares of different sizes from the leftovers in accordance with the area of the scraps. In this case, you will have to tinker with arranging the mosaic parts on the surface and trimming them.

Checkered covering made from scraps

You can make rugs from scraps of new material. A small piece of cute material is suitable for a computer mouse pad. Larger pieces - for a rug under your feet in a car or in the bathroom.

Old linoleum and the remains of the new one will be used in the country. Any summer resident will give a hundred tips on what to make from leftover linoleum. This material can be found in garden plots in any application:

  • Skate on the roof of the gazebo. Waterproof material can be used instead of galvanized tin skates.
  • Linoleum will extend the life of a wooden bench or table, making it comfortable and easy to clean. On the street, the surface of the bench and table is constantly dirty from dust and other debris blown by the wind. And just wipe the upholstered bench with a rag, and it will be like new. This option for using old linoleum has been tested by millions of residents of city high-rise buildings, where domino players gather in their courtyards.
  • Seals for garage doors. A strip of flexible material nailed to the bottom of the door or at the junction of the sashes will prevent heat loss during the winter.
  • Summer residents lay strips of linoleum along the paths in the garden between the beds. To prevent the surface from slipping in wet weather, it is sprinkled with straw.
  • When roofing any outbuildings, linings for nails are cut from old linoleum.
  • For kids it makes an excellent ice cube that glides down the slide.

Important! All these options for using old material do not apply to natural Marmoleum. It is not suitable for outdoor use and will deteriorate quickly.

Old homogeneous (single-layer) PVC linoleum is an excellent material for preparing large volumes of glue and mastic:

  • To prepare the glue, clean the old material from dirt and cut it into small pieces. The smaller the size, the faster the glue will turn out. Acetone is used as a solvent. Sliced linoleum is poured into a container of the required volume (a half-liter glass jar) and filled with acetone. Close with a lid. Linoleum will dissolve within 24 hours and turn into a viscous mass. This glue is used for gluing metal, ceramics, and wood. If glue is used to install tiles, it will perform the function of waterproofing.

Making glue

  • If you add filler (chalk) to the resulting glue, then, depending on the concentration, you get putty or quick-drying mastic. Unlike most store-bought putties, this one will remain flexible after drying and will not crack.

Soles for slippers

Fur house slippers, sewn in the shape of funny little animals, often have soles made of fragile material that wears out quickly. If the soles are worn out, then do not rush to throw away your favorite slippers. Use to replace linoleum trim.

Place the two pieces right sides together, trace the sole and cut out. Glue a felt or fur insole on the inside. Having connected the top of the slippers with the sole, sew around the perimeter with strong threads.

To feel confident on any floor, choose linoleum with a surface that will provide good grip. Smooth, glossy material will not work as it will slip on a wet floor.

Mosaic

Linoleum mosaics are very popular, since the varied colors of this coating are a good material for colorful mosaic compositions. In addition, making such crafts from linoleum with your own hands is not at all difficult.

Linoleum cutting scheme

Mosaics can be used for wall panels or as decorative inserts on furniture.

The instructions for completing the mosaic are quite simple:

  1. Trimmed panels of different colors should be laid out overlapping. To prevent the pieces of material from moving relative to each other, four small nails must be driven into the material.
  2. The covering is cut between the nails, after which they are pulled out and the resulting bridges are cut.
  3. After this, you need to remove the trimmings and join the finished linoleum panels end-to-end. If the cutting was done carefully, the canvases of different colors will fit tightly together.

Linoleum mosaic

Small scraps should also not be thrown away; they can be cut into small squares and laid out in a pattern. In this case, you first need to make a sketch of the future mosaic, then transfer the image to the base and, focusing on the sketch, select pieces of a certain color.

Procedure for laying linoleum on mastics

Mastics “Syntalaks”, “Gumilaks”, “Gerilaks” and “Akrilaks”, well pre-mixed, are applied with a spatula to a carefully swept dry floor (concrete, wooden) in a layer of 1.5-2 mm, after which the linoleum is immediately laid. DFK mastic is used for gluing all types of linoleum and wooden parquet. At temperatures below 15 ° C, mastic cannot be used. The mastic is applied to the floor with a spatula and after a few minutes the linoleum is laid. If the mastic has thickened, it should be heated by placing it in a jar of hot water (but not higher than 80 ° C). PS-B mastic is also used for gluing all types of linoleum. Prepare it no more than an hour and a half before application (mix mastic with hardener in a ratio of 10:1). Apply to the floor with a spatula. But this mastic is toxic; you need to work with it using rubber gloves.
