How to peel an avocado with a knife, spoon for salad, sandwiches, rolls at home

Publication in the group: Processing and preparation of products

The healthy avocado is a tropical fruit that has a creamy soft part and a huge pit located in the middle of the fruit. The edible part of the fruit is not very juicy and not as sweet as other berries. It is possible to free the soft part from the skin at home using different methods, depending on what dish the product will be used for.

Preparing for cleaning

Peeling an avocado at home is not difficult. Basically, the edible part of the product is eaten fresh, since the soft part contains a huge amount of nutrients. The pit and skin are inedible parts of the fruit because they contain toxins. They must be removed before eating the product.

Before peeling and slicing, the tropical fruit must first be prepared. To do this, you should initially wash your hands with the product. The fruit should be washed in slightly warm or cold water, without using liquid detergents that may get into the pulp. Afterwards the product must be wiped with a paper napkin. Avocado skin is a little rough, so for washing it is best to use a sponge, which will help completely get rid of dirt.

To free the fruit from the skin and seeds you will need to prepare:

  • cutting board;
  • kitchen knife;
  • tablespoon or teaspoon.

Washing the fruit is a mandatory step that should not be neglected. The surface of the skin contains bacteria that can cause digestive upset or contribute to the development of gastrointestinal diseases.

How to eat correctly

How to use avocados to make the bland product enjoyable? You need to eat it immediately after peeling, as the flesh quickly darkens. The answer to why avocados darken lies in the oxidation of fruit components in air.

Using lemon juice can slow down this process. It is enough to sprinkle the fresh pulp with lemon so that its appearance remains yellow with a shiny tint. You can leave the seed inside to preserve the color. Knowing how to eat an avocado so that it’s delicious, there will be many more lovers of this exotic food.

Avocados cannot be stored for a long time indoors. If you want to eat a sandwich with fruit paste again, you can prepare the pulp by mixing it with lemon juice and freeze the contents by loading the container into the freezer.

Raw

Alligator pears should be eaten raw. This way the fruits are more tasty and retain their beneficial properties as much as possible. After heat treatment, it begins to taste bitter, so fresh fruit can be added to hot dishes immediately before serving.

If the avocado seems bland to taste, then you can add lemon juice, olive oil and sprinkle with your favorite spices (ground red or black pepper). Additional components are added to the pit of the fruit left after removing the seed, and then the pulp is selected with a spoon. Knowing how to use fresh avocado, you can eat it to your heart’s content, adding additional ingredients or spices.

With an idea of how to make and eat avocado sandwiches, you can easily prepare “on-the-go” snacks. If you mix the pulp of the fruit with herbs, feta cheese or fresh cottage cheese, grind all the ingredients in a blender, spread the resulting mixture on bread, you will get a wonderful snack.

Try to buy unripe fruits. They quickly reach the desired condition at home and are ready for consumption after a few days. Ripe specimens can and should be eaten immediately; overripe ones will have to be thrown away.

Cook as part of dishes

Cooking has long ago adopted the product and adds a piquant twist of the exotic when preparing:

  • all kinds of snacks;
  • unusual pastas, sauces;
  • fruit and vegetable salads;
  • cream soups;
  • stuffed dishes;
  • fillings for vegetarian rolls;
  • side dishes for meat and fish dishes;
  • desserts in the form of mousses, ice cream, cocktails.

When preparing vegetable stews, avocado is stewed with vegetables or added raw to them when serving the dish. This way it retains nutritional components and does not acquire a bitter taste, which can hardly be called piquant.

Some people believe that only unusual, exotic dishes are prepared from avocados, but this is a misconception. For example, Mexicans love to eat guacamole. This is a traditional national dish that includes avocado pulp, flavored with lemon juice and salt, with the addition of tomato, bell pepper, onion and a few cloves of garlic. It is not difficult to prepare, and it is not unusual.

What goes well with

Due to its neutral flavor composition, avocados can be eaten in combination with various nutritional components of dishes. The ideal option is in addition to seafood, fish, vegetables, eggs. Alligator pear will “fit in” and add a unique nutty flavor to dishes with ham, chicken, beef and pork.

Pairs perfectly with citrus fruits: lemon, lime, orange. There are avocado dishes with bananas (smoothies, yogurt). You cannot eat this fruit with nuts.

The products are combined not only in their qualities, but also in the digestion time in the stomach. The longer this process takes, the more the digestive tract becomes clogged. Avocado toast takes 4 hours to digest, but if you add an egg to the contents, the process will take 8 hours.

How much can you eat per day

For vegetarians and lovers of healthy food, it is possible and important to eat avocados and introduce unusual exotics into the diet. Despite the mass of useful components, the fruit is saturated with fatty acids. They need to be eaten, but within reasonable limits.

Raw foodists are familiar with the principles of eating fruits and vegetables and know how often you can eat avocado: one fruit per day. This is a norm that it is not advisable to exceed, otherwise problems with weight gain will begin, and general health will deteriorate, as if you overeat fatty foods. These are nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and heaviness in the iliac region, familiar to lovers of fatty snacks.

In its purest form

In its purest form

Eating avocado raw in its pure form is the most common way. Only ripe pulp is suitable for food - there is no benefit from unripe and overripe fruits.

Ripe fruits have an ideal structure - neither hard nor soft, creamy, buttery. The taste depends on the variety, but more often it is creamy, with nutty notes.

The fruits are first washed, cut into two parts, pitted and peeled. Toxic substances contained in the pit and skin make them unsuitable for food.

Serve the halves with the skin on, carefully selecting the edible part with a teaspoon. The raw product without additives is eaten in the first half of the day - for breakfast or for a snack.

Flavored

Flavored

The neutral taste of avocado does not suit everyone, but it can always be enhanced by seasoning with juices or spices. Ideal combinations:

  1. Exotic fruit slices sprinkled with fresh lemon juice. Another plus is that lemon slows down the oxidation process, so the pulp retains its natural color longer.
  2. A fruit cut into cubes or slices and sprinkled with salt. It is eaten instead of morning sandwiches and toast with black or rye bread.
  3. A fruit sprinkled with the juice of orange, grapefruit or other citrus fruits.
  4. Avocado paste with seasonings. It is spread on bread instead of butter.

In salads

In salads

It is right to periodically diversify your diet, otherwise you will quickly get tired of tropical superfood. As an option, prepare salads from different ingredients. You can experiment with the composition and proportions - it is important to choose products with which avocado goes perfectly. This:

  • boiled eggs (chicken and quail);
  • low-fat cheese (hard and soft);
  • cucumbers, tomatoes, bell peppers and other vegetables;
  • dill, cilantro, spinach, lettuce, parsley;
  • tuna;
  • salmon;
  • other lightly salted fish;
  • seafood;
  • chicken;
  • turkey;
  • pine nuts;
  • cottage cheese;
  • low-fat yogurt without additives;
  • cream;
  • olive oil;
  • lemon juice;
  • black pepper;
  • salt;
  • garlic;
  • dried fruits.

From the listed ingredients you can prepare dozens of variations of salads, cold cream soup, and sauces. The last two dishes are thickened with cream or butter - without heat treatment.

The list can be expanded, but it is important to take into account the fat content and calorie content of the finished dish. Avocado has a low glycemic index (GI 15) and contains no sugar, so it is recommended for people on a diet.

The fat content in the product is high - on average 20 g per 100 g of pulp. And even though 80% of this amount is represented by healthy fatty acids, nutritionists do not recommend combining the tropical fruit with fatty meat or high-calorie foods.

Removing the pit

Once the tropical fruit has been cleared of its bitter peel, the edible part of the fruit will need to be removed from the pit.

To facilitate the process, it is recommended to follow the step-by-step steps:

  1. First, place the avocado on a cutting board so that its narrow side faces up. You need to place a kitchen knife in the center and apply a little pressure so that the blade can reach the bone.
  2. Then you need to slowly turn the fruit over to make the cuts larger.

  3. Next, using a kitchen knife, you need to divide the fruit into 2 halves. Each piece must be the same size.
  4. Using a teaspoon or tablespoon, you should pry up the bone and remove it.

  5. At the end of the procedure, it is recommended to sprinkle the edible part of the avocado with lemon juice, apple or wine vinegar.
  6. If the tropical fruit is not completely ripe, then you need to make several turns with the spoon, trying not to touch too much pulp.

There is another method for extracting the bone. To do this, you will need to insert a sharp knife blade into the bone. Then it must be sharply and forcefully removed from the pulp.

Step-by-step instructions on how to peel and pit an avocado:

Prepare an avocado, a small knife with a sharp tip, half a lemon and a teaspoon.

First, you need to peel the avocado. Depending on the variety and maturity of the fruit, this can be done in two ways. The first method, which is shown in the photo, is the simplest - we cut off a thin layer of peel with a sharp knife in much the same way as we cut it off when peeling, say, potatoes. This way you can peel both completely ripe and not quite ripe avocados. The second method can be used if the peel easily comes away from the pulp - then we make four longitudinal cuts on the peel along the entire length of the fruit and, prying each part of the peel on one side, carefully and easily remove it.

So, the avocado fruit is peeled.

Now, from the narrower side, cut the fruit exactly in the middle until the knife hits the seed.

We begin to turn the avocado without removing the knife from it. All this time, the knife should rest against the pit, and the cut should be made so that the halves of the avocado are as identical as possible.

When the fruit is cut, but not divided into halves, use a knife to easily separate one part from the other, holding the lower part (in which the stone will remain) and, as it were, removing the upper part from it.

Using a teaspoon, lightly pick up the bone and remove it. If the bone does not come away from the pulp well, turn it with a teaspoon, capturing as little pulp as possible. When the fruit is ripe, the seed comes off and we literally slip out, almost effortlessly!

Immediately pour lemon juice over the avocado halves - this will help us preserve the natural color of the fruit and prevent it from darkening!

Now you can easily cut the avocado into thin slices and use it as you wish.

When buying an avocado, pay attention to the condition of the fruit - its ripeness (the fruit should be slightly soft to the touch, not hard, but not too squeezable when lightly pressed) and the condition of the peel (even and rich color, uniform surface, no cracks or damage).

Avocado is a leader among foods that prevent the aging of the human body! It contains vitamins B, K, C, a lot of potassium, copper, glutathione (a powerful antioxidant).

If you think that I wrote this article in vain, just think about taking the pits out, but after I took the pits out of two buckets of cherries and a basin of plums at my grandmother’s dacha, I’m just a pit guru, I’ll take the pits out of anyone with my eyes closed - it means that avocados just don’t grow on your grandmother’s property, and you didn’t try to take that pit out of it. Because extracting an avocado pit is a completely special issue, those who have tried it at least once develop respect for it. I’ll tell you right away that you won’t be able to remove the pit with your bare hands without damaging the avocado carcass. The task can only be accomplished with the help of a knife. Sharp, not very sharp, long, short - it doesn’t matter, the main thing is that it is a knife.

First, of course, the avocado is cut in half with this knife. So what now? It itself will not fall apart into halves, and don’t get your hopes up, the seed will securely hold the pulp on itself. I don’t recommend cutting it into halves like an apple: the tender avocado will be crushed where you squeeze it with your fingers (that is, 50% of the perimeter of the cut), and you’ll have to forget about the beautiful halves. It’s better to take the avocado with both hands and turn the halves in different directions relative to each other: for example, if you rotate the right half clockwise, then twist the left half counterclockwise. The avocado pit is not round, so literally within the first quarter of a turn it will separate. But - only from one half of an avocado. You put this half aside, and then the fun begins.

Peeling peel for slicing

Before peeling an avocado, pay attention to the ripeness of the fruit and take into account what the vegetable will be used for. This method is suitable for ripe fruits. It is often used if the vegetable is purchased for serving, slicing, or sandwiches.

First you need to remove the bone. Each of the halves is further divided into 2 approximately equal parts. After this, use a sharp small knife to pick up the tip of the peel from the edge and pull it: the peel should easily come away from the edible part. The remaining pieces are cleaned in a similar way. Peeled avocado is cut into slices of the desired size and thickness.

Some varieties of avocado will be difficult to peel in this way, since even when the fruit is ripe, the skin adheres tightly to the flesh. In such a situation, you can use a potato peeler.
