How to remove greasy and dirty stains from interior doors - proven means and methods

General, periodic or unscheduled cleaning is part of our everyday life, and there is no escape from it. Most of the measures provided for in such cases are carried out using long-established, traditional technologies. However, not everyone knows how to effectively remove grease stains from laminated doors. In fact, if you look at it in detail, all the techniques implemented at home are quite simple.

When starting to remove stains, you need to take into account that doors made of PVC, chipboard or plywood are more “gentle” in terms of care. As a rule, they are the ones that are laminated, and this protective and decorative layer is easily damaged by abrasives, especially if it is a paper-based film. Therefore, when washing such interior doors, extreme attention and accuracy is required.

  • Sponge or soft napkins. One will not be enough to remove grease stains.
  • Warm water.
  • Cleaning products - soda, alcohol, essence (lemon or vinegar), household solvents, laundry soap. They are used depending on the origin of the stains, including fatty ones. After all, the latter may not be the only ones on the canvas, box, or trim. Therefore, when deciding what to wash wooden doors with (plastic or otherwise), this must be taken into account; It’s unlikely that anyone will be happy with the prospect of putting them in order in several “passes.”

Operating procedure

Determination of the nature and extent of pollution

The door may not necessarily be stained with drops of grease. Traces and dirty spots appear on it even after repeated touching with seemingly clean hands. But the secretions of the sweat glands still remain. As a rule, in the place where the handle is located. Gradually, dust adheres to this area, and the lamination begins to darken. Such a preliminary examination will allow you to determine exactly what and how to remove grease stains from doors covered with laminate.

Preparation of the solution

Depending on the degree of contamination, one of the following options is selected:

  • soapy;
  • vinegar (10%);
  • lemon essence (same concentration).

Surface preparation

To simplify the process of removing fat, the base must be freed from adhering dust and dirt. The housewife decides how to wash the door herself, focusing on the material of the door and the type of lamination. As a rule, the same soap solution is sufficient. But here you need to know a sense of proportion. It’s one thing if the canvas is made of plastic - in relation to the liquid (if it is not aggressive), this material is inert. But if you have to wash a wooden door, you should be careful; the canvas is immediately “dried”, that is, wiped dry with a soft cloth.

Fat removal

  • To do this, you will need a weakly concentrated solution (1 to 10) of citric acid or vinegar. Alternatively, alcohol. The product is carefully applied with a moistened cloth to the stain. Recommended exposure is about 2.5 - 3 minutes (with an average degree of contamination).
  • Rinse off the solution along with fat fragments with clean warm water.
  • Wiping the door with a dry cloth.

  • It is not recommended to keep the solution for more than 5 minutes. Any of the drugs used is to some extent aggressive, and can damage it with prolonged contact with the protective layer. The same fully applies to the question of how to care for doors with lamination. In this regard, they are much “gentler” than their metal or glass counterparts.
  • When caring for wooden doors and removing various stains from them, it is advisable to dry the treated area with a hairdryer. This is safer and faster than wiping the surface with a cloth.

If you choose the right method for removing grease stains, then there will be no traces left on the laminated door. It is advisable to clarify this issue before purchasing it. Furniture showroom managers are well versed in this and will definitely give some sensible advice.

Removing grease from glass doors

Our apartments often use glass doors. And on their smooth surface, greasy stains remain especially often and stand out quite strongly. If it is ordinary glass, then there should not be a problem. Just wipe with a damp or alcohol-soaked soft (so as not to leave scratches) cloth and everything will go away. However, sandblasted frosted glass is a completely different matter and is much more difficult to remove grease from. In this case, several methods are usually used:

  • Soap and ammonia based products;
  • Baking soda, which we will use to scrub away grease stains using a soft sponge;
  • Alcohol or glass cleaner containing alcohol;
  • Ammonia mixed with water in a ratio of 1 to 10.

What you need to know before cleaning

When starting to clean interior doors, you need to consider some points:

  • Do not start cleaning door coverings without testing the selected cleaning product. To do this, you need to use an inconspicuous area. If there are no negative consequences, then you can begin to thoroughly wash the surface.
  • Do not use any kind of hard brushes, steel wool or scrapers. They will certainly lead to the integrity of the coating being compromised. Once the stain is removed, it will be necessary to repaint or replace the entire door.
  • Do not use the following strong reagents when cleaning: 96% alcohol, pure, undiluted acetone, acids and solvents.
  • Do not leave the cleaning agent, or water, on the surface to be cleaned for a long time to avoid unpleasant consequences such as swelling or lightening of the area.

Methods for cleaning doors made of various materials

Before you begin removing grease stains from the surface of interior doors, you need to clarify what material they are made of. Cleaning methods depend on this.

Chipboard and MDF (verified by the editors)

Method 1: citric acid or vinegar cleans chipboard and MDF surfaces well. Prepare a solution of 2 tbsp. l. lemon (or table vinegar) in a glass of water and use a soft sponge or cotton pad to clean problem areas.

Method 2: make a soda solution (take 3 tablespoons of product per 200 ml of water). The dirt is washed off with a soft sponge soaked in it, and then wiped dry with a clean rag.

Method 3: prepare a solution of water and dishwashing gel and foam thoroughly. This foam is applied to greasy blots and left for 5 minutes. After this, the remaining dirt is washed off with water and wiped with a dry cloth. This method is suitable even for white products.

After cleaning using any of the above methods, be sure to polish the surface using soft flannel.

Verified by the editors: MDF doors have greasy, old stains. Previously, alcohol-based glass and surface cleaners were used for cleaning. The result of cleansing is 10 out of 100.

A solution with citric acid was tested on one of the doors . The photo shows 100% removal of stains from the door. But it wasn't easy. The procedure had to be repeated several times with pressure. Cleaning an entire door in this way is very difficult, time-consuming and troublesome.

result after cleaning stains with citric acid solution

The next test is cleaning with soda solution . Stains from doors are washed quickly, without any effort. After cleaning, you need to wash off the whitish stains. The only drawback is that the drops fall on the floor, which will need to be washed immediately. And this may not be part of the plans of those who are used to doing general cleaning partially. Which is even correct, so it’s worth laying something down.

Popular door cleaning methods

Surface cleaning depends on the quality of the material. For MDF and chipboard, which are common in our regions, the following methods are suitable:

Method 1

Vinegar or citric acid is suitable for cleaning such surfaces. It is necessary to prepare the following solution. For a glass of water, add 2 tablespoons of lemon or the same amount of vinegar. Wet a sponge or cotton pad with the resulting solution and wipe the problem area with it.

Method 2

It is necessary to prepare a soda solution, observing the proportions of 200 ml of water and 3 tablespoons of soda. Moisten the resulting liquid with a sponge and wipe off the dirt. After this, wipe the problem area with a dry cloth.

Method 3

Prepare a solution from dishwashing gel and water. Then lather it and apply it to the greasy stain for 5 minutes. Dirt is easily removed and wiped dry. This method is ideal for white products. Regardless of which cleaning method is chosen, it is necessary to wipe the door thoroughly after washing. For this, use soft flannel. It makes it easy to polish the surface.

For MDF doors, you can choose an alcohol-based glass cleaner. They perfectly remove greasy stains. You can also use folk remedies, but you will have to make an effort to clean it.

Laminated interior doors removing oil stains how to remove greasy stains from doors

In order to increase its service life, any product must be properly cared for. And interior doors require special care. Care products for interior doors depend on the material from which they are made. Laminated doors are based on a plywood board or chipboard, with a pattern on top, usually on a paper base, and laminated with a special film. The main rule in care is the preservation of the top, laminated layer. But even on such doors stains of various origins can form, which spoil the appearance and which are best removed.

To remove stains from a laminated door you will need (and it is best to always have on hand):

  • Several soft napkins or a small sponge
  • Solutions of household solvents (ammonia, acetone)
  • Alcohol
  • Vinegar or lemon essence
  • Laundry soap
  • Soda

Stains on a laminated surface can be removed in the following ways:

  1. First of all, it is necessary to determine the origin of the stain.
  2. Before you begin removal, remove dust from the surface of the door leaf (you can use a damp cloth).
  3. Using a cloth moistened with a mild detergent, you can remove stains from juice, wine, and chocolate. The napkin is applied on top of the stain for three to five minutes, and then wiped with a soft, dry cloth.
  4. Household solvents can be used to remove stains from nail polish, cigarettes, lipstick, markers, felt-tip pens or pencils. A sponge moistened with any solvent (acetone, white spirit, etc.) is kept on the stain for a short time, and then wiped with a soft, dry cloth.
  5. If coffee stains appear on the surface of a laminated door, they can be removed with alcohol or ammonia solution. If the coffee stain was not removed immediately, and it has already dried out, then you can prepare a special solution (three teaspoons of baking soda per two hundred grams of water). Gently wipe the stain with a sponge or cloth soaked in the solution, dry with a hairdryer, and wipe with a soft, dry cloth.
  6. Stains left by wax or chewing gum are most easily removed. The area of contamination is thoroughly dried and cleaned with a small scraper. The operation to remove such stains must be carried out with extreme caution so as not to damage the surface.
  7. If acid stains appear on the surface of a laminated door, they can be removed with a cloth soaked in a solution of vinegar or lemon essence. Similarly, a napkin is applied to the stain, and after three to five minutes it is thoroughly wiped with a soft, dry napkin.
  8. Complex stains caused by paint or shoe polish can be removed with special products designed for this purpose. Such products can be purchased at any hardware store.

This will avoid possible deformation of the top laminated surface. But if you still can’t remove the stain, you shouldn’t immediately think about replacing the entire door. Currently, there are special pencils for masking stains on laminated surfaces. You can purchase such a pencil at a hardware store and choose the color and tone to match the color of the door. You can also cover the stain with a special color-matched film. It is not recommended to clean stains on a laminated door with abrasive cleaners, as this may damage the surface.

The laminated door is based on chipboard, or even plastic, which is covered with a paper layer with a pattern, on top of which a film is placed. Why do greasy stains appear on door coverings?

Mostly, grease stains are localized in the area where the door handle is located, since this is where we most often touch with our hands. As you know from biology courses, the skin of our hands tends to secrete sweat-fat segments. When it comes into contact with the surface of the door, those same transparent sweat marks remain on it, onto which over time many dust particles settle and turn into real dirty spots. This problem is especially common among young housewives with small children and pets.

But it is also worth noting that greasy stains on the surface of interior doors appear as a result of contact with a variety of biological or chemical liquid substances that have a certain percentage of fat content.

Every woman strives to maintain 100% perfect cleanliness and external beauty of all surfaces in the house, therefore, in order to most effectively remove traces of grease from a wooden surface, it is recommended to first accurately determine the type of coating. Then start selecting the most effective cleaning product.

Advice: before you start cleaning the door from various contaminants, it is recommended to conduct a trial test for the interaction of the door with the selected cleaning agent in an inconspicuous area. If no reaction occurs during a test application of the cleaning product, use the selected ingredient to clean the main area of contamination.

Also remember that it is not recommended to remove stubborn stains using the following substances:

  • pure alcohol;
  • undiluted acetone;
  • all types of solvents;

  1. Apply the remover to the surface with a brush. This must be done carefully, brushing in one direction.
  2. Creating a compress. To enhance the washing effect, the surface must be wrapped in film. And it will be left in this state until the wash acquires a brown or dark brown color, usually this process takes from 40 minutes to 4 hours.
  3. Removing varnish. Depending on the thickness of the varnish layer, this must be done either with a spatula or sandpaper.
  4. Neutralization of the remover. After the work of removing the varnish is completed, its remnants should be washed off with water and vinegar.

When the door is cleaned of old varnish, and therefore of all grease, it needs to be sanded with sandpaper. And use a brush to remove all dust and debris.

This completes the preparation of the door for varnishing. You can use a wide brush to apply varnish to the door. This should be done evenly and in one direction. And depending on the required tone, layers can be applied from 1 to 3.

Greetings, readers of my blog.

Stains from water and grease, the appearance of abrasions on the surface - all these are the reasons for the loss of the presentable appearance of interior doors. Mostly, stains appear around door handles, as well as at the bottom of the door leaf at the point of contact with the feet. The problem of dirty doors becomes especially urgent with the appearance of children or pets.

If the surface of the door leaf is partially dirty, remove the stains from the door

won't be difficult. If the defects affect the entire surface, then you will have to resort to more radical methods.

Every normal housewife strives to maintain order and cleanliness in the house. But some surfaces are very sensitive to cleaning and in order not to make mistakes you should follow my recommendations:

  • For the manufacture of interior doors, wood is used directly or indirectly, which is resistant to high humidity. Even for simple cleaning, you should not use a very damp cloth, as this can lead to swelling of the fabric.
  • To remove grease stains from the door, you should not use aggressive agents such as acetone, solvent, or alcohol.
  • To remove stains, use a soft sponge for washing dishes, not wire brushes. The damaged surface of MDF or laminated doors cannot be restored - you will have to change the canvas.

Why do greasy stains appear on door coverings?

Basically, the surface becomes oily at the level of the waist and chest. This is due to the fact that people touch this area more often. And since the skin secretes fats along with sweat, upon contact with the surface of the door leaf they end up on the surface of the coating. If you don't wipe the door for a long time, dust and pet hair will settle. Also, stains are formed due to the contact of fatty substances on the surface.
