How to wash and refresh a mattress: methods and means

Washing a cotton mattress or a mattress with another type of filling at home is very difficult. This is clear to everyone. Firstly, the large dimensions of this thing are to blame; it is difficult to imagine that a mattress measuring 2x2 meters can be stuffed into a washing machine or simply soaked in the bathtub.

Secondly, even if it were possible to place it in the bathroom, in most cases it will do nothing, since it still cannot be completely wet. In general, there are some difficulties that still need to be resolved somehow.

How to remove urine, blood or drink stains from mattresses with different fillings?

If you decide to wash an orthopedic mattress, you must understand that if the recommendations are not followed, the product may lose its useful characteristics and turn into an ordinary mattress. For light stains, you can use a sponge and laundry soap dissolved in warm water. This method is suitable if fresh stains have appeared that need to be removed immediately. Among other options that will not harm the orthopedic mattress it is worth noting:

  • using a steam cleaner. Such a device is capable of removing any stains from a soft surface. In order not to harm the upholstery, you should carefully select and set the optimal temperature;
  • use of vinegar solution. This method is actively used to remove urine stains. Vinegar does a great job with this. After processing, the product must be thoroughly dried;
  • purchase of special products. After studying the features of the filler and upholstery, you can go to a household chemicals store, which offers an extensive selection of products for removing dirt from soft surfaces. It is better to use a spray bottle to apply the product;
  • cleaning with ammonia. Using 15 gr. This liquid per 1 liter of water can remove stubborn stains. After completing the work, dry the product using, for example, a standard hair dryer.

Now you know how to wash an orthopedic mattress at home without wasting time and money on dry cleaning. To avoid this procedure often, use a mattress pad. The best option is to purchase a removable waterproof cover. You can quickly remove stains from a product placed in a special “case”. Treat your belongings carefully and with care. In this case, they will serve for a long time, without requiring complex care and maintenance.

The most common types of contamination of these products are stains from urine (cat or child) and drinks (tea, fruit juice, cognac). Washing them is half the battle; it is also important to dry the mattress properly, otherwise it will become moldy and become unsuitable for further use.

VinegarMix with water in a ratio of 1:3.
Lemon acidFrom urine and drink stains, including old ones1 tsp. mix with 200 ml of water. Wipe the work area with a cloth moistened with liquid.

Foam rubber product

It is advisable to wash such mattresses by hand. Machine washable if:

  • safe detergents are used;
  • the product is new enough, otherwise the foam will tear;
  • aggressive bleaches are not used;
  • The product fits in the drum of the machine.

VinegarMix vinegar with water in a ratio of 1:3.Wipe the work area with a cloth moistened with liquid.
Lemon acid1 tsp. mix acids with 200 ml of water.

Products with such fillers can only be washed on delicate cycles. In this case, you cannot use regular powder. It is recommended to replace it with gel or shampoo. If you are going to wash a mattress stuffed with cotton wool, bamboo or silk fiber, you need to remove stains from its surface. Yellow traces from urine and dark traces from cognac or tea are eliminated with vinegar, citric acid, ammonia, soda, and borax. Methods for preparing and using cleansers based on these components are described above.

After preliminary cleaning of the described or drink-stained product, you can wash it. If the size allows (for example, when it comes to a children's mattress), you can use a washing machine. In other cases, you will have to wash the item by hand. General rules for washing mattresses stuffed with cotton wool, bamboo or silk fiber:

  • maximum water temperature – 40 degrees;
  • “Delicate wash” or “Hand wash” mode;
  • minimum number of revolutions;
  • Rinse 3–4 times;
  • Spinning and machine drying are prohibited.

Mattress with coconut coir
Coconut fiber (which is often called shavings) cannot be wetted, otherwise it will lose its performance properties, and a mattress with such a filler will become unusable. It is allowed to remove only fresh dirt from its surface, which does not require the use of aggressive cleaning agents and intense friction.

Products made from holofiber and latex are easy to care for. They can be washed in a machine or by hand, after first cleaning heavily soiled areas using one of the above methods. As for orthopedic mattresses, they should not be wetted excessively. If there is dirt on the surface, you must carefully wipe the work area with a cotton pad moistened with hydrogen peroxide and wrung out well. It is recommended to entrust the removal of difficult-to-remove stains from urine and drinks from expensive orthopedic products to professionals.

After cleaning, the product must be thoroughly dried, otherwise mold will appear on it, and additional measures will have to be taken to eliminate it. How long a mattress takes to dry depends on the type and thickness of the filling layer. Thick items take longer to dry. When wet, cotton wool and foam absorb a lot of liquid and take a long time to dry. Compared to these fillers, holofiber dries much faster. In any case, this process will take more than one day.

Drying a washed mattress should take into account the following recommendations:

  • place to dry on a horizontal surface, turning it over periodically;
  • do not allow wet items to come into contact with direct sunlight;
  • Avoid placing the product near heating appliances;
  • Before placing it to dry, distribute the filler evenly;
  • Do not try to speed up the drying process with a hair dryer or iron.

Fresh urine stains are easier to remove from a mattress than old ones. Therefore, you need to start the procedure immediately.

Procedure:

  1. If the product has a cover, remove it and put it in the washing machine.

  2. Use a dry cloth that absorbs moisture well to collect the puddle. Blot the fabric with paper napkins. Do not rub or press on the stain so that the liquid does not seep deeper into the fabric.
  3. You can neutralize uric acid using table vinegar. It helps get rid of persistent odors. Vinegar is diluted with water in a ratio of 1:3, poured into a spray bottle and distributed evenly over the stain. Excess moisture is removed with napkins.
  4. Sprinkle a thin layer of baking soda on top of the stain. It is left on the surface of the product for 15 minutes. By reacting with vinegar, baking soda will effectively clean the mattress and absorb odors.
  5. After 2 hours, the mattress is vacuumed.

It is not recommended to make the bed immediately; it needs to be ventilated. If possible, take the mattress out into the fresh air for 10-12 hours. This will get rid of all foreign odors.

If animal urine gets on the mattress, then additionally use hydrogen peroxide.

Use a diluted antiseptic (100 ml of peroxide is required for 200 ml of water). It is applied to the stain after vinegar and soda, the solution is sprayed with a spray bottle or distributed with a soft sponge.

This will result in thick foam. After 2 hours, remove any remaining product with paper napkins and a vacuum cleaner. This method is effective only when the stain is fresh and has not had time to dry.

Baking soda and your favorite essential oils can be used to create a natural dry cleanser.

For all types of mattresses: cotton, children's, coconut, orthopedic, spring, dry cleaning is suitable. Before you start cleaning, you need to thoroughly vacuum the mattress. A simple and effective way to keep the mattress clean is to add 10-15 drops of your favorite essential oils to 1-2 packs of soda, mix, cover the entire sleeping surface with a thin layer of aroma soda composition through a sieve for at least 6-8 hours, then vacuum. The soda will absorb excess moisture from the surface, disinfect, and essential oils will give a light aroma.

We dry-clean a mattress at home

Should I go to dry cleaning?

Anyone who intends to clean a mattress is faced with a choice: take it to a dry cleaner or do it on their own at home.

The first option is preferable if there are strongly ingrained stains and a persistent unpleasant odor that cannot be dealt with using improvised means.

It is not recommended to try to remove particularly persistent traces with chemicals , which include urine, rust and other stains of biological origin.

This can lead to large stains on the fabric and increased odor. It is better to immediately contact the services of professionals, then there is a better chance of returning the mattress to its original cleanliness.

When the area of contamination is too large, and the lifespan of the mattress exceeds 5-6 years, then it is wiser to replace it with a new one. In such a situation, even professional help may not help; it will only waste time and money.

Orthopedic products are also difficult to clean, since they consist of several layers (in the middle there are springs or a latex plate, on the sides there is padding polyester, coconut, holofiber, foam rubber or a combination of different materials, on top there is a fabric cover).

This multi-layering causes the proliferation of pathogenic microorganisms inside. Dry cleaning will deal with this problem more efficiently.

How to care for a mattress?

The very first rule of care: it is better to prevent problems. A few simple recommendations will help with this.

  • Mattress cover. When buying a new mattress, it is important to immediately purchase a waterproof mattress pad, or better yet, two to replace it. In relation to the aforementioned mattress pad, waterproof does not mean airtight. The structure of the bottom layer of such a product has cells smaller than those of water molecules. It prevents the entry of water (and other contaminants), but does not prevent the material from “breathing.”

When buying a new mattress, it is important to immediately purchase a waterproof mattress cover.

  • Flip and turn. Regularly perform a revolution (top-bottom) and turn (head-toe). The revolution must be carried out at least once every six months. Turn, ideally once a month. This procedure has a positive effect on the orthopedic properties of the product and serves as a sanitary and hygienic measure.

Turn, ideally once a month.

  • Timeliness. Fresh stains are much easier to remove than old ones. Therefore, you need to act quickly.

Fresh stains are much easier to remove than old ones.

  • Cleaning. It is recommended to vacuum the product once every two weeks.

It is recommended to vacuum the product once every two weeks.

  • Home dry cleaning. From time to time you can carry out so-called home dry cleaning. A foam cleaner for cleaning upholstered furniture is applied to the surface of the mattress (according to the instructions). Leave for a short time. Wash off with a washing vacuum cleaner or a damp cloth. Leave the surface open until completely dry. Important! Only for people who do not have allergic reactions to household chemicals!

Suitable only for people who do not have allergic reactions to household chemicals.

  • Ventilation. The procedure can be combined with changing bed linen. Remove underwear and mattress cover. Open the windows and give the product the opportunity to “breathe”. It is recommended to ventilate the product outdoors 1-2 times a year for 3-6 hours. It is important that the weather is dry (no precipitation) and that the product is not exposed to direct sunlight.

The ventilation procedure can be combined with changing bed linen.
Hygiene. It is not recommended to eat in bed unless necessary. Food particles create an ideal environment for bacteria to multiply. If there is such a need (bedridden patient), you need to take care of additional protective equipment.

How to machine wash

Mattresses and pillows are machine washable, like any other bulky item, on a delicate cycle with liquid powders.

Facilities

Use liquids that dissolve quickly and are easily washed out of bulk products. Products suitable for washing mattresses are shown in the table.

Modes

For mattresses, a delicate wash mode is suitable, which involves heating the water to 40°C and minimal spin. It is better to turn off the spin cycle altogether and dry the mattress in a horizontal position in a ventilated area. To drain excess moisture, leave the product removed from the drum on the bottom of the bathtub in a straightened form.

How to clean urine from a mattress

If the urine stain is fresh, you need to quickly remove the mattress cover and put it in the wash. Remove any remaining urine from the mattress itself with a paper towel.

Remove stains with paper napkins

Then apply a 1:3 solution of vinegar and water to the puddle using a spray bottle or sponge (vinegar will remove the smell), sprinkle baking soda, it will absorb the remaining liquid, for 10 - 15 minutes, apply hydrogen peroxide (available freely in pharmacies), diluted in water in a ratio of 1:2.

Pour the solution into a spray bottle and apply to the surface

Soda, under the influence of acid, will foam into a stiff foam. After 2 hours, vacuum the mattress and wait for it to dry completely for at least 10 hours. This method is suitable for removing fresh ammonia stains from humans, children, and animals.

For a dried urine stain, try using the 1 tsp recipe. citric acid diluted in a glass of water, generously treat the stain, dry it, after exposure to the acid the dried stain should fade.

Citric acid will help deal with old stains

This recipe should be used with caution because acid is an aggressive substance and can corrode the surface of the mattress or ruin the filling. Never use chlorine-containing products, the dirty stain may fade, but there is a high probability of streaks and the ammonia smell will go away, but in its place will be a specific, sharp, heavy and unpleasant one.

  • use cold, ice-cold water without soap (warm blood will coagulate and “get stuck” in the fibers of the fabric, making it difficult to remove dirt);
    Apply a cloth soaked in cold water to the stain for 30 minutes.
  • moving a dry sponge or cotton pad from the edge of the stain to the center;
  • constantly blot the stain, do not allow the moisture to spread onto the clean area.
    Blot the stain with a towel or special cloth

There are several ways to remove old blood stains.

  1. Soak the stained area with cold water, apply oxygen bleach for 20 minutes, rinse, then wash.
    This technique is suitable for removable mattress covers. Oxygen bleaches can be used on removable covers or mattress pads
  2. Make a paste mixture from baking soda and fine sea salt 2:1, moisten the stain with very cold water and rub the paste in with your fingers, without going beyond the clean area.
    The exposure time of the mixture is 30 – 60 minutes. , depends on the age of the stain, remove the residue with a napkin, rinse with cold water, vacuum and take out to air to dry. Mix baking soda and sea salt and apply to the stain
  3. Apply hydrogen peroxide 3% to the dried blood and dry from the edges with a cotton pad, do not allow it to spread, repeat, if necessary, several times.
    You can use hydrogen peroxide, which is in any first aid kit.
  4. Use ammonia 3% in the same way, only first moisten the stain, then apply ammonia along the edge and gradually move towards the center of the stain.
    Ammonia can also be used to remove old stains

Mold contamination is very dangerous, especially for people prone to or suffering from allergies, since mold is a strong allergen. If there is a large mold coating, throw away the mattress. It is necessary to fight it.

You can remove mold from the outside of the mattress using special products, but they are not effective if the infection is deep

If dry cleaning is not available, then there is a folk method.

  1. Dry the mattress, preferably in the sun.
  2. Treat the surface with vinegar or alcohol solution.
  3. Dry.
  4. Treat with any disinfectant or solution.
  5. Dry.

Dirt from red wine can be easily removed by applying dishwashing gel diluted with water.

Dishwashing detergent should be diluted with water and applied to the wine stain.

Acetone can easily remove drops from nail polish, but be careful, if the surface is colorful, it may fade.

Traces of fat remove starch (any) salt.

A mixture of starch and salt is used for grease stains

Yellow stains can be treated with stain remover and oxygen bleach.

To avoid streaks after washing, you should dry the treated area with a hairdryer, and if they appear, they can be bleached using white washing powder.

When starting to clean urine from a mattress, you need to study the information on caring for a specific product. Depending on the type of bed, the methods for processing it differ. For example, products made from coconut coir cannot be wetted, but mattresses made from holofiber are not afraid of water.

In order not to spoil the bedding or cause pilling and holes to appear, you need to read the manufacturer’s recommendations, which are indicated on the product label. If there is no tag, then use the general instructions.

Foam rubber

A foam mattress is not afraid of water, but it needs to be wetted moderately. To remove urine, perform the following algorithm of actions:

  1. Remove bed linen and mattress cover. They are washed separately.

  2. Wet the stain with plain water. It is applied with a sponge so that the product does not become too saturated.
  3. Borax is spread over the entire area of the spots. This is a mineral detergent that has an antibacterial and antifungal effect. Borax is an excellent odor remover and can be used to clean a child's mattress. Boric acid is sold in pharmacies or gardening stores. The cost of 1 kg of powder is about 60 rubles.
  4. After 10-15 minutes, the borax is swept away with a brush. The remaining product is collected with a vacuum cleaner.

After such cleaning, the mattress should be ventilated for 12-24 hours and thoroughly beaten. You can’t cover it right away.

Cotton mattresses are afraid of moisture. The more they get wet, the more they become deformed. The fiber will roll up, and sleeping on such a product will be uncomfortable. Therefore, you need to clean it correctly.

Procedure:

  1. Lay the cotton mattress on the floor or other flat surface.

  2. Dissolve laundry soap or liquid powder in warm water.
  3. Using a sponge, treat urine stains and clean them with a soft brush.
  4. Remove foam with a damp, clean cloth.
  5. Rinse the brush and scrub the mattress again. If foam forms, remove it again with a soft, clean cloth. Processing is continued until the remaining detergent is washed out of the product.

After washing, the product is taken out into fresh air and left to dry completely. It needs to be shaken periodically so that the cotton wool is evenly distributed.

Bamboo and silk mattresses can be machine washed if they are the right size. When the product is large, it is processed manually.

Basic recommendations:

  • the water temperature should not exceed 40 degrees;
  • washing is carried out in a gentle mode, setting the minimum permissible number of revolutions;
  • rinse the product 3-4 times;
  • spin is turned off.

If the mattress has been washed by hand, do not twist it. To make water faster than glass, it is lightly crushed. When it stops dripping, the product is laid out to dry on a flat surface.

If there is a smell left after washing, then treat the cotton, silk or bamboo mattress with vinegar and soda, and after 2 hours it is vacuumed.

Spring

Spring products should not be filled with water, washed with a hose or shower. Moisture that gets inside will not evaporate, it will rot and spoil the base. The springs will rust, and mold fungi will multiply in the depths of the product.

Therefore, citric acid is used to remove stubborn urine stains from a spring mattress. The acid will discolor the stain and neutralize the odor, but will not harm the fabric or internal mechanism.

Use it as follows:

  • dissolve 2 tsp in 0.5 liters of water. citric acid;
  • the composition is applied to the stain;
  • after 2 hours, the area is blotted with napkins and vacuumed.

Woolen

Wool mattresses are not afraid of water, but do not tolerate high temperatures. Boiling water will damage it. You can get rid of urine stains using one of the following recipes:

  1. Aspirin. Dissolve 1 tablet in 1 liter of water. Treat the area with this product and leave it for 1-2 hours.
  2. Vinegar and ammonia. The components are mixed in equal proportions, applied to the stain and left for 2 hours.
  3. Combined composition. Mix 1 tbsp. l. toothpaste, 100 ml of hydrogen peroxide and 4 tbsp. l. starch. The composition is applied to the stain and left to act for 3 hours.

You can use any composition of your choice. When it takes effect, the mattress must be washed by hand or in a machine. The water temperature should not exceed 30 degrees. The spin is turned off. You cannot twist the product by hand. The water should drain on its own.

Liquid concentrates are used as detergents. They effectively remove stains even in cool water and wash out well. Repeated rinsing is mandatory.

Coconut

A mattress filled with coconut coir cannot be washed. Water reduces the functionality of the product, causing it to quickly deteriorate.

You can deal with urine stains using the dry cleaning method. To do this, the product is slightly moistened with water and sprinkled with soda. After 2 hours, the mattress is vacuumed and ventilated throughout the day.

If you cannot get rid of the stains and odor, you need to contact a dry cleaner. Since washing a mattress with coconut shavings is prohibited, you need to take care of its additional protection. The best option is to use a waterproof mattress pad.

Holofiber

It is not difficult to wash urine from a holofiber mattress. If the size allows, it can be loaded into the machine.

Basic conditions:

  1. Water temperature up to 60 degrees.
  2. RPM speed 600-800.
  3. Additional rinse 1-2 cycles.
  4. Detergent: liquid powder or gel capsules.

Before washing the mattress, it is treated with hydrogen peroxide. Large mattresses are washed by hand in the bathroom.

Removing urine stains

You can clean urine from a mattress at home using borax (sodium tetraborate), a universal disinfectant widely used in the production of detergents. To do this, you need to lightly moisten the stain in order to dilute its concentration and reduce the smell. Then sprinkle the problem area generously with borax and rub in thoroughly. Allow the surface to dry. You can speed up the drying process by placing the mattress in the sun or in a well-ventilated place. The powder should then be collected with a vacuum cleaner. The stain may not be completely removed, but its brightness will decrease significantly and the unpleasant odor will disappear.

How to clean urine from a mattress? Soap and water are quite effective in removing urine stains. Using this method, you can get rid of fresh formations, while trying to prevent moisture from getting inside the mattress. The contaminated surface should be blotted with a sponge (or towel) until the smell subsides. You can enhance the effect by adding alcohol or vinegar to the solution. The stain should be allowed to dry completely. You can speed up this action using a hairdryer.

How to clean urine from a children's mattress? A fresh urine stain can be removed with a mixture of lemon juice and salt. The ingredients must be mixed until smooth. Rub the resulting mixture onto the problem area and leave for 1-2 hours. Remains of the cleaning product should be carefully collected with a damp sponge.

Use of chemicals

Some types of stains - grease, cosmetics, stains of unknown origin, old blood - are classified as complex. In such cases, it is advisable to resort to chemical agents. It can be:

  • textile stain removers such as: “Vanish”, “Amway”;
  • wet wipes "Loc";
  • ammonia;
  • hydrogen peroxide;
  • table vinegar;
  • baking soda;
  • lemon acid;
  • liquid glycerin;
  • borax and boric acid;
  • aspirin and others.

In the fight against severe pollution, it is advisable to resort to the help of chemicals.
When the origin of the stain is unclear, a universal composition is prepared:

  • 250 ml hydrogen peroxide
  • 3 tablespoons soda
  • 1 drop of liquid soap or dishwashing gel

Step-by-step instructions for eliminating contamination:

  1. All ingredients are mixed.
  2. The solution is poured into a spray bottle.
  3. Apply to the problem area.
  4. Wait 5-10 minutes.
  5. Vacuuming.

The universal solution recipe is suitable in cases where the origin of the stain is not clear.

Wet spot cleaning

The second method is suitable for a large stain when the liquid has penetrated deep into the mattress. In this case there will be more work. We will need: water, napkins, vinegar, baking soda, and a sponge.

  • First you need to blot the stain so that the liquid is absorbed into the napkins.
  • Dampen the stain with a wet sponge. This will dilute the urine concentration and help remove the stain better. Do not press hard on the area of the stain, and do not rub it too hard - otherwise the urine will go deep into the mattress. 9% vinegar will help you remove the smell . It needs to be diluted with water in a ratio of one to three and poured into a spray bottle. Spray the stain and then immediately blot the area with tissues.
  • Remaining moisture can be collected using baking soda . Sprinkle baking soda powder onto the stain and leave for 20 minutes. The soda will absorb all the vinegar, along with any remaining urine.
  • Hydrogen peroxide and soda will help get rid of traces of urine . Pour hydrogen peroxide into a glass and dilute it with water in a ratio of ½ - 2 parts water, 1 part peroxide. Sprinkle baking soda onto the stain until the baking soda completely covers the stain. Pour the solution into a spray bottle and spray onto the stain. A thick foam should form, leave the mattress in this state for 1.5-2 hours. After the allotted time, collect the remaining soda with a dry cloth and thoroughly vacuum the problem area. After such cleaning, you need to ventilate the mattress well. If it is not possible to dry it in the sun, use a hairdryer or iron (through a cotton napkin).
  • Another way to wash a mattress from child or adult urine. For this we need: 3% hydrogen peroxide - 100 ml, baking soda - 1.5 table. spoons, dishwashing gel - ¼ teaspoon. Mix everything in a glass or ceramic bowl and pour into a container with a spray bottle. The gel must be added at the very last moment. The mixture will foam. Shake the container well and apply to the problem area. Leave for 10-15 minutes, then dry with napkins, remove any remaining substance, and dry the mattress completely.

What types of pollution are there?

During operation, the appearance of contamination is inevitable. First of all, it is dust and epithelium (dead skin particles) - pollution from which even a mattress cover will not protect 100%. If there is a child or a bedridden patient in the house, there is an increased risk of contamination of the sleeping surface with specific secretions - urine, feces, vomit.

In this case, you can’t do without a waterproof mattress cover. Difficult types of pollution include mold and tobacco smoke. In this case, first of all, it is necessary to eliminate the source of pollution. A neglected version will most likely require dry cleaning. Other types of contamination: cosmetics, food, spilled drinks, sweat, blood and others.

We suggest you familiarize yourself with Getting rid of spiders in the country house and garden with your own hands

For sanitary and hygienic purposes, it is recommended to vacuum the surface of the mattress once every 2 weeks (more often for people with allergies). A washing vacuum cleaner and a steam cleaner are a priority. These devices help to carry out deeper cleaning.

A vacuum cleaner and steam cleaner help with deeper cleaning.

If a vacuum cleaner is temporarily unavailable, you can use the “old-fashioned” method. Cover the surface of the mattress with a damp (well wrung out) sheet and beat it out using a beater. Then dry well.

To remove an old stain, you may need to proceed in several stages.

  • The easiest option is to use a textile stain remover.
  • Baking soda and hydrogen peroxide also give good results. Cover the stain with a thin layer of baking soda. A solution of water and hydrogen peroxide (1:1) is poured into the sprayer. Spray the liquid over the baking soda. Leave the wet mixture on the surface for 2 hours. Vacuuming.
  • The last, drastic measure is bleaching agents. A small amount of the drug is applied to the stain and immediately washed off with a wet cloth. Leave until completely dry.

Bleaching agents are the last, drastic measure.

First of all, you need to understand, and, if possible, eliminate the source of the unpleasant odor.

First of all, you need to understand the source of the unpleasant odor.

How to clean using dry and wet methods

Types of mattresses that cannot be washed are dry cleaned on the bed. The easiest way is to use a vacuum cleaner and baking soda:

  1. Mix a sufficient amount of powder (you can take a whole pack) with five drops of clear essential oil.
  2. Spread the baking soda powder over the surface of the mattress using a sieve.
  3. Leave it on all day.
  4. Vacuum in the evening.

    Dry cleaning

Dry cleaning products also include special stain removers in the form of wet wipes (Amway LOC), sprays (Amway PreWash Spray, Dr. Beckmann “Deodorant and Sweat”), pencils (Faberlic Edelstar). You can also use Vanish for furniture. Only foam is applied to the surface of the mattress.

Pillows and mattresses based on latex, coconut, and buckwheat are subjected to wet cleaning. Machine washing and washing with large amounts of water are contraindicated for them.

What to do:

  1. Fill the basin with cool water (not higher than 40°C).
  2. Add a small amount of dishwashing gel and lather.
  3. Wet a soft sponge and go over the entire mattress.
  4. Place the mattress upright and allow excess moisture to drain.
  5. Dry with a towel and leave to dry in a ventilated area.

It is not recommended to wring out the product and vigorously rub the detergent inside. The mattress is dried in an upright position away from heating appliances.

Getting rid of various types of stains at home

Parents of small children, pet owners, and relatives of sick people are concerned about the smell of urine in the house. If you or someone you love is not allergic to odor absorbers, try using a pet odor absorber. Apply it to the stained area as many times as necessary to achieve a positive result.

Odor absorber is designed to absorb and eliminate unpleasant odors in the home caused by pets

Otherwise, rub baby dry powder onto a fresh urine stain, remove it after a while and dry it with a hairdryer.

Iodine works well against ammonia odor, but is not suitable for white mattress covers.

Iodine solution can be used on dark clothes to combat odors

Moldy odor is removed by bleach (sold in online stores), dilute it in warm water and cover the entire surface, dry it, then vacuum it.

Disinfectant – bleach

The smell of sweat disappears from the saline solution. Apply to the entire area of the sleeping area, then take it out to dry in fresh air.

Tobacco odor is removed with soda; it should be sprinkled generously on the mattress and removed with a vacuum cleaner after 48 hours.

Preparing the mattress for washing

Before washing, prepare the product:

  1. Remove bedding.
  2. Remove decorative elements.
  3. Beat with a clapper or vacuum.

How to quickly dry a mattress with different fillings after cleaning?

You cannot use a mattress that is not dry. If you cover a wet product with sheets, mold microorganisms will multiply in it and an unpleasant odor will appear.

Helpful information:

  • The product should be dried on a flat surface so that there are no creases or dents on the mattress;

  • the product must be turned over regularly;
  • It is not recommended to dry the item in direct sunlight or near a switched-on battery;
  • While the mattress is wet, you need to evenly distribute the filler in it;
  • Do not iron the product or blow it with a hairdryer.

Drying time depends on the thickness of the product and the type of filler. Cotton wool and foam rubber take the longest to dry. From holofiber and latex, water evaporates faster.

How to steam

In addition to the vacuum cleaner, the surface of the mattress is treated with a steam cleaner, for example, from Karcher. The device cleans various surfaces without the use of chemicals. For a mattress, such cleaning is useful in destroying dust mites, especially if the mattress is large and not so easy to wash. The steam generator cannot cope with complex contaminants, but it will disinfect the surface without lengthy drying.

Steam cleaning

You can use an iron instead of a steam cleaner. Pour in water, set to steam and walk over the mattress, releasing steam frequently.

Tips for keeping your mattress clean

Never use chlorine to remove urine stains. This is a powerful chemical, but it is not suitable for treating a mattress. Sleeping in a bed soaked in bleach is not the best option, especially for children.

Such cleaning is harmful not only to health, but also to the upholstery of the product. At the very least, it will become tough. In the worst case, the fibers will simply dissolve, exposing the filler.

Heavy or rigid products with an orthopedic design cannot be washed in a machine or by hand. They are processed only by dry cleaning. Alternatively, you can call specialists to your home.

Before you start treating your sleeping area with a new detergent, you need to test it on a small area and monitor the reaction of the fabric.

To summarize, we can say that in order to keep the product clean as effectively as possible, it is necessary:

  • use a mattress pad (preferably two replacement ones) and wash it regularly;
  • regularly rotate and turn over the mattress;
  • vacuum the surface on both sides every two weeks;
  • during general cleaning, along with cleaning carpets and upholstered furniture, give the mattress a home dry cleaning;
  • ventilate the product every time you change bed linen and 1-2 times a year - in the fresh air;
  • observe the rules of hygiene - keep the body clean, do not eat food on the bed, do not smoke in the room;
  • remove stains promptly.

Follow the recommendations for keeping the mattress clean to preserve the quality of the product and the health of the owners.

Methods for cleaning a mattress

How to clean a mattress quickly and effectively? There are several cleaning options that can rid the product of dirt and stains that have appeared.

  1. Entrust it to dry cleaning services. The method is the simplest, but quite expensive, so not everyone can afford it.
  2. Carry out dry cleaning yourself using a vacuum cleaner. With a clean filter and dust bag, the device will be able to powerfully and efficiently extract fine dirt and debris from the product.
  3. Wet cleaning. This operation can be carried out in two ways: using a washing vacuum cleaner and manually. From the point of view of effectiveness, the first method is the most hygienic, because it washes away dust, fine dirt and mites well inside the product, and not just on its surface. By hand, the mattress should be washed with a weak solution of washing powder, wiped with a damp cloth, and then dried thoroughly in the fresh air.
  4. Home dry cleaning is effective with products for furniture and carpets, which should be applied to the surface of the sleeping area, left for a short time, and then washed off with a damp cloth or collected with a vacuum cleaner. Then the product needs to be dried.

General cleaning of the mattress is aimed at getting rid of mites and germs, as well as bringing the sleeping area into a tidy state. However, there are often stains on products that require special removal methods: blood, urine, coffee, wine and others. How to clean a mattress from stains?

Coconut filler

Today it is very fashionable to buy children's mattresses filled with coconut shavings for children. But these are not the chips that we add to confectionery products. This is the upper hairy part of the nut.

Coconut coir:

  • tough,
  • has antiseptic properties,
  • allows air to pass through well.

These properties make the material an excellent mattress filler. Products filled with coconut coir do not accumulate dirt, dust, or unpleasant odors. Therefore, there is no need to wash coconut mattresses purchased at Ikea or another store. This is simply not necessary. Moreover, when answering the question whether it is possible to wash a mattress filled with coconut, knowledgeable people answer that such a product cannot even be wet. Otherwise, it will lose its orthopedic properties.

The only thing you can really do is wash the mattress cover that is filled with coconut shavings. For example, sleep product manufacturer Askon advises removing and cleaning the mattress cover once every six months. For children's products, a more frequent washing cycle is suitable.

Some buyers, preferring cheap goods from Ikea, purchase foam mattresses. This material accumulates dust very well, absorbs odors and moisture. To keep the product clean, it is recommended to periodically wash the Askon children's mattress filled with foam rubber. You can do this manually. After removing the mattress cover, soak the product in warm soapy water. Carefully passing over the surface with a brush, we clean the foam rubber from stains.

The next step is rinsing. Since the filler perfectly absorbs water and soap, you need to rinse the product as thoroughly as possible. It is recommended to rinse a children's mattress in warm water, changing it 5-7 times until the foam completely disappears

Then it is equally important to dry the mattress thoroughly so that no moisture remains inside

Having understood the question of how to wash a mattress, you need to familiarize yourself with the rules for using the products.

  • Orthopedic products with coconut filling should not be placed on a sagging surface.
  • Children should not be allowed to jump on the mattress.
  • You need to put a waterproof mattress cover on your child's mattress.
  • To keep the orthopedic product clean, periodically vacuum the surface.
