Tips and tricks on how to wash a baby stroller at home

A baby stroller is one of the most intensively used items.

It is exposed to dirt, dust, rain and other negative factors. The child's activities also contribute to vehicle pollution.

To keep the stroller clean, it must be cleaned and washed periodically. So that it does not lose its consumer qualities and remains neat, beautiful, and safe, this must be done correctly.

Read the article about whether and how to wash a stroller (stroller, transformer, etc.) at home, how to disassemble it before and reassemble it after washing.

Is it possible?

Baby strollers are presented on the market in a variety of models designed for a specific age of the child. They include cleaning at home.

Removable fabric parts are washable: hoods, capes, mattresses. The supporting structure, wheels, metal fastenings are subject to dry or wet cleaning.

It should be remembered that the duration and efficiency of washing depend on the number of removable parts . It is easier and faster to wash a fully or partially disassembled structure than a non-disassembled one.

Before purchasing a product, you need to study the design of the stroller and the features of the material from which it is made.

Conscientious manufacturers indicate:

  • material used (fabric, synthetic fabric, leather substitute);
  • recommended washing (hand, machine);
  • mode (temperature, speed, spin);
  • chemical cleaning agents (allowed, prohibited).

Only directly from the manufacturer's instructions can you reliably know whether the stroller can be washed.

What about the new one?

If the new stroller was stored and transported in its original packaging, then before using it, just wipe it with a damp cloth. This will help get rid of fine dust and particles of packaging material.

The decision on the need to wash a new item that was left unopened by the seller is made by the child’s mother based on her ideas about child safety.

Recommendations

  • A rain cover for a stroller may be needed during snowy conditions.
  • To avoid heavy steering, wash the wheels every 3 months. There is no need to use chemicals; strong water pressure is sufficient.
  • Check the serviceability of parts, bolts, fasteners, brakes, locks and various mechanisms.
  • It is best to keep the warranty receipt from the moment of purchase, even if it seems that nothing will happen to the purchased product.

In order for the product to serve you as long as possible, you need to take care of it several times a month. Usually parents want to put their child in it until the age of 3, so buy a disassembled stroller in advance. You can find many videos like “Washing the Zippy Stroller” for your reference, because this is the company that many parents choose.

How to disassemble a stroller, transformer, etc. before washing?

A universal, practical, convenient transport for a baby is a transformer . It is used all year round, so you have to wash it more often than other strollers.

The complete set and mounting features of the transformer depend on the brand and the specifics of the model, but its main characteristics are the same for all types. The transformer consists of a large number of parts. It needs to be disassembled before washing.

To do this optimally, it is recommended to follow the suggested procedure:

  1. Remove shopping cart.

  2. Pull out the cradle and envelope.
  3. Unfasten the fabric parts fastened with straps, Velcro, or buttons. Such elements include a muff, a mattress, a bag.
  4. If the hood is attached to the base with bolts or screws, then use the appropriate tool to detach it.
    To quickly determine the connection locations, you can use the diagram from the instructions supplied with the product.
  5. Remove all covers if possible.
  6. Remove the bow that supports its shape from the hood.
  7. Remove the wheels by pulling the special brackets.

What to do with non-separable ones?

Washing strollers with non-removable covers and elements is carried out without a complete disassembly stage. Such designs, if possible, preliminarily facilitate:

  • remove the wheels
  • bumper,
  • additional accessories.

The manual method is used for cleaning. For example, a stroller, otherwise called a cane, is washed with a large sponge or brush dipped in soapy water.

Washing begins from its upper part - the hood, not forgetting the metal parts. After this, rinse and wipe thoroughly.

If a family lives in a private house with its own plot, then it is better to wash a non-separable stroller outside using a water hose. In urban environments, a bath is used for washing.

Main types of strollers

Baby strollers can be classified according to the age group for which they are intended. There are divisions based on the number of wheels and upholstery material. As a rule, parents focus on functionality and maneuverability.

Based on this, several main directions can be identified.

Classic models

They are designed to transport children from birth to six months. They are a prototype of a cradle, with a flat and hard bottom. Classic strollers have a folding bottom and large wheels with good shock absorption. They are available in many well-known brands, in a wide variety of colors and finishes. A typical classic model is the Inglesina Sofia.

Walking models

Stroller

They are suitable for children who have learned to sit. Manufacturers indicate the age group from six months to three years. The stroller is a block with a large hood and a removable foot cover. Due to the adjustable backrest, it can be reclined to a lying position. One of the well-known brands that produce walks is yoyo.

Three-wheeled models

They are distinguished by their relatively light weight and maneuverability. These strollers are easy to transport and store, as when folded they take up very little space. The package can include both a cradle for newborns and a sitting unit.

Transformers

Disassembling the stroller before washing
Transformable strollerThe most economical option for children's transport. The walking block transforms into a cradle by inserting a mattress or envelope into the walking block. Suitable for children from birth to three years.

The main difference between such strollers will be the presence of two or three blocks in the set. A big advantage would be a monolithic block for newborns, as it is the warmest and most not blown, unlike other models.

The 3 in 1 options come with a car seat with adapters that can be used to mount it on the wheel unit. The wheelbase itself can be swivel or classic, depending on the model. Prominent representatives of universal strollers will be the Adamex Barletta and Tuttis Zippy.

Preparation for the process

After maximum disassembly, preparation for washing begins . It involves removing dry lumps of dirt from the wheels and the outside of the stroller with a brush. If necessary, this stage is supplemented by removing stains from food and drinks.

If it is not possible to remove dried dirt using a dry method, it is moistened with water. Soaked dirt is removed with a damp cloth.

The dry cleaning procedure must be done carefully so as not to damage the fittings and the integrity of the fabric.

Handwash

This method can be used to clean fabric models. Hand washing will allow you to thoroughly and delicately wash all parts of the product without damaging the fittings or seams.

It is produced in several stages:

  • heavily soiled parts can be soaked in warm water with added detergent for thirty minutes;
  • fabric elements are placed in a container with soapy water at a temperature of about forty degrees;
  • using a soft brush or sponge, clean each part separately;
  • after removing dirt, rinse in cool water;
  • chrome parts are first cleaned with a damp cloth, then wiped dry;
  • the wheels are washed under pressure with clean water and wiped with a dry piece of cloth;
  • Using a damp cloth, remove dirt from leather parts;
  • The bottom of the cradle and other non-removable elements are carefully cleaned with a sponge and soapy water; soap and excess water must be removed.

Following this algorithm, you can thoroughly clean the fabric base from dust and dirt.

Manual cleaning of the stroller

This method is not suitable for cleaning eco-leather models. Leatherette products require a more delicate approach.

To remove contaminants without causing harm to the material, you can adhere to the following recommendations:

  • remove all detachable parts;
  • a well-wrung out damp sponge removes traces of dust and dirt;
  • in case of significant contamination, a weak soap solution can be used;
  • soap residues are removed with a damp cloth;

There are models with a minimum of detachable parts, for example transformers. Combination options are also possible, where there are both fabric and leather elements. In such cases, a steam generator will be an ideal assistant.

It will easily clean the most inaccessible places and additionally disinfect the product. Unfortunately, not everyone has a steam generator. Therefore, models with a combined finish are most suitable for manual cleaning.

Step-by-step cleaning instructions

To ensure that your child’s vehicle does not become deformed from washing or become covered with cracks, stains, or creases, you should follow the following rules:

  1. To choose a washing method, the composition of the material from which the stroller is made is taken into account. For example, if all the removable parts are made of raincoat fabric, then they can be washed in a machine. If these parts are combined with artificial leather, the stroller can be washed by hand.
  2. Individual parts may require different cleaning methods. For example, a hood is machine washable, while a bedspread decorated with an embroidered monogram can be hand washed. Hard-to-reach corners are easily cleaned with a steam generator.
  3. The bottom of the structure, seat belts, and other non-removable parts are carefully cleaned with a brush.
  4. Chrome parts are polished with a damp cloth.
  5. The wheels are washed under running water.
  6. Hypoallergenic washing and cleaning liquids are used.

Before washing for the first time, you should check the material for resistance to the selected cleaning agent.

In the washing machine

The fabrics from which stroller sets are made contain structured synthetic fibers. They add strength, water resistance, and increase wear resistance to the product.

Machine washability makes caring for these strollers easy. In this case, all that remains for manual work is cleaning the wheels and the main base.

Washing recommendations:

  • all removable elements are placed in a special bag that protects them and the machine from mechanical damage;
  • a delicate mode is established;
  • the temperature is set to 40C°;
  • super rinse function is used;
  • push-ups are performed at low speeds.

Automatic spinning and drying cannot be used for parts with insulation. The water drain mode is suitable for them.

as laundry . Regular washing powders can leave streaks on the surface of items. Additional treatment with rinses and conditioners does not make sense.

Manually

If the product contains a leather substitute, artificial PVC fabric, or a lot of accessories, then it requires wet cleaning or hand washing. Considering the lightness and waterproofness of such materials, this most often applies to strollers.

If there is a removable hood and leg cape, their processing consists of the following steps:

  1. Soak in warm soapy water for 20 minutes.
  2. Carefully hand wash at 50C° with baby powder.
  3. Rinse until completely free of soapy water.
  4. Light squeezing.
  5. Straightening things out.

Products made of PVC, eco-leather, and combined elements require delicate care. They are cleaned with a damp soft sponge. For heavy soiling, add detergent. Remove any remaining water from the surface with a viscose napkin.

Laundry or baby soap and dishwashing detergent are also suitable for hand washing . The criterion for choosing a product is complete rinsing and anti-allergy.

Do not use chlorine-containing cleaning products or subject the stroller to aggressive mechanical cleaning.

How to apply the cleaner?

An alternative to washing is cleaning with foam cleaners for cars and carpets.

Advantages of this method:

  • quick and easy application;
  • thorough destruction of dirt and rust;
  • removing stubborn stains;
  • there is no need to disassemble the product.

To use, the contents of the can are sprayed onto surfaces. Dried foam with dirt particles is removed with a napkin, vacuum cleaner or shaken off.

To quickly clean an eco-leather stroller, you can use car interior leather cleaner . In this case, the bonus will be enhancing the color of the stroller, polishing, and eliminating odors and microorganisms.

How to wash a stroller correctly: tips for parents

Most people, when purchasing a stroller, first of all pay attention to its appearance, ease of assembly and transportation. And only a few think about how they will wash and clean this vehicle in the future. Meanwhile, with prolonged use, the stroller becomes dirty. Spots appear on it, and dust and dirt accumulate in the fabric elements. How to wash a stroller, restore its freshness and protect your baby from dust?

Washing covers and hoods in the washing machine

Covers and hoods can only be washed in fabric models of baby strollers. Strollers made of artificial leather cannot be washed. The main care for leather parts is cleaning with soapy water.

Before you start washing, you need to remove everything that you can from the stroller. Unfasten the buttons, unscrew with a screwdriver anything that may interfere with the dismantling of the fabric parts. Carefully inspect the elements that were removed from the stroller. If there are stains, carefully remove them with stain remover, following the instructions for the product used.

Next, load the fabric parts into the drum of the machine. When washing such items, the most suitable option is detergents for delicate fabrics. In the washing machine itself, select the delicate wash mode and the water temperature of 30 ° C. Do not use the spin option.

At the end of the wash, remove the items from the drum, gently wring them out and hang them to dry. Do not dry fabric parts near heating devices or in direct sunlight.

Washing the stroller by hand

Often, some parts of the stroller cannot be removed for washing: there is a hard frame inside or non-removable arches are in the way. In this case, hand washing will help. It is best to carry it out in the fresh air: in the country house or in the courtyard of a private house, using a hose with water for rinsing. But if you don’t have such an opportunity, then a bathroom will do just fine.

Strollers have parts that cannot be washed, such as seat belts.

Hand wash steps:

  1. Place the stroller with wheels directly into the bathtub. Naturally, you first need to clean the wheels.
  2. Prepare a warm soapy solution. To do this, add baby powder to a bowl of water. Stir it thoroughly.
  3. Wetting the brush in the prepared solution, walk over all surfaces of the stroller.
  4. Rub especially dirty areas with laundry soap. To combat stubborn stains, use a stain remover.
  5. Using the shower hose, remove the soapy water from the stroller.
  6. Without using detergent, brush the fabric parts again.
  7. Rinse the stroller again and leave to dry.

Please note that the stroller contains parts that cannot be washed. For example, seat belts. It is better to wipe them with damp wipes. If the bottom of the stroller is made of plywood, chipboard or MDF, then try not to get it too wet. It is better to clean this part with a damp soapy sponge. Remove any remaining product with a clean damp cloth. It is enough to wipe metal parts with a damp cloth.

Tips for washing strollers from different manufacturers

Strollers from different manufacturers have their own dismantling features. Knowing how to properly disassemble a certain brand of technical equipment, you can easily wash any stroller.

To disassemble Tutis Zippy strollers, you need to unscrew the bolts hidden by the fabric and located on the hood pipe. Do not wash the supplied mattress in the washing machine. It is made of very delicate fabric that can only be washed by hand.

In Polish Adamex strollers, the bolts are also hidden under the fabric of the hood. The hood itself is made of dense fabric that can easily be machine washed at 60°C. Older models of this brand are not collapsible at all. They are cleaned only by hand.

Inglesina strollers are distinguished by the fact that all parts are removable. The process is simplified by many rivets. True, to remove some elements of the stroller, you will have to tinker. Fabric parts tolerate machine washing well, are easy to wash and have good wear resistance.

With the right approach, washing a stroller is not at all difficult. Timely washing will return the stroller to a fresh look, extend its service life and protect your baby from the negative effects of dust and dirt.

Are there differences for different models?

Types of children's vehicles are divided according to their main characteristics into classic, recreational, and transformers. They differ in purpose of use and functionality.

It is impossible to separate them into separate groups based on the type of cleaning - all strollers, even of the same brand, differ in the material of manufacture, assembly method, and completeness.

In addition to the manufacturer’s instructions, when washing a specific stroller, a combination of factors is taken into account:

  1. The degree of disassembly of the structure.
  2. Number of removable parts.
  3. Composition of the material.
  4. Availability of additional accessories.
  5. The presence of combined elements.

Effective ways to remove stubborn stains

  1. Splashes of mud, which are a must-have for walks in the off-season, can be difficult to remove. To get rid of stubborn dirt, you must first rub it with a brush without water, apply a stain remover, wait and wash it by hand or machine.
  2. Tar, fuel oil and asphalt are removed from textiles using potato starch. After adding a couple of drops of turpentine and ammonia to it, pour the mixture onto the stain and wait. Clean the dried stain with a brush. If a yellowish trace remains, it must be treated with peroxide to neutralize the tint.
  3. Some stains can be removed with acetone. But first you should try the method on an inconspicuous area to find out the reaction of the tissue.
  4. Stains from various food products can be easily removed using laundry soap or dishwashing liquid.
  5. Greens can be removed from the stroller cover with a paste of soda and salt mixed in equal proportions.
  6. You can try removing old stains with wine vinegar.

Attention! The main rule to follow when cleaning the stroller from stains is to thoroughly rinse off all detergents.

Cleaning removable elements

The fabric parts of the stroller set can be washed by machine or by hand. The method is selected depending on the degree of contamination, material, presence and structure of the filler.

Mattress (coconut, etc.)

The way to keep a mattress clean depends on its filling. Models with coconut flakes and foam rubber are popular .

Coconut filler does not collect dirt, dust, or odors. Such mattresses cannot be washed, because moisture causes the shavings to lose their orthopedic properties.

If absolutely necessary, they are dry cleaned. The mattress cover is machine washable.

To do this you should:

  • remove the cover;
  • fasten it with clasps;
  • Set the machine to delicate wash and heavy rinse settings.

The foam mattress absorbs odors, dust, and moisture. Considering the structure of foam rubber, it can only be washed by hand, following the instructions:

  • soak the product in soapy water for half an hour;
  • use a brush to carefully walk in a circular motion over the surface;
  • repeat the procedure until the spots disappear;
  • Rinse the mattress in several changes of water until the soap scum completely disappears.

cradle

A special feature of the cradle is its dense bottom, made of plywood or fiberboard. These materials should not get wet.

A combined approach is used for cleaning:

  1. All removable parts come unfastened.

  2. Depending on the type of fabric, they are washed in a machine or by hand according to the appropriate rules.
  3. The walls and fixed parts are cleaned with a soapy cloth.
  4. Use a cloth soaked in clean water to remove any remaining soap.
  5. Surfaces are wiped with a microfiber cloth.
  6. The bottom is cleaned with a vacuum cleaner and wiped with a slightly damp cloth.

Cases

Dense, durable fabric is used to make the covers. If the manufacturer allows machine washing, then the sequence of actions is as follows:

  • Spread heavily soiled areas with laundry soap and leave for a few minutes;
  • put in a washing bag;
  • Wash on delicate cycle, high rinse, light spin.

When using laundry soap to dissolve heavy soiling, it is necessary to ensure that the soap does not bleach the treated area of the fabric.

If only hand washing is allowed, then the procedure for cleaning removed covers contains the following steps:

  • soaking in water with a cleaning agent;
  • gently clean the dirt with a sponge or soft brush;
  • Gently rinse until any remaining foam disappears.

Bag

To restore the cleanliness of this quickly dirty item, follow these steps:

  1. The hard bottom is pulled out.
  2. The bag is machine washable on a delicate cycle with minimal speed.
  3. Instead of spinning, the water drain mode is used.
  4. The washed item is wrapped in a dry towel and gently patted until excess water disappears.

Hand wash is used if the hard base of the bag is sewn inside. In this case:

  • the bag turns upside down;
  • immersed in a warm soapy solution to the bottom level;
  • washes off dirt and stains without touching the bottom;
  • rinses under running water;
  • straightens out and hangs over the bathtub with the handles down.

Hood

When machine washing a hood, you should follow the following algorithm:

  1. Pull out the metal shackle.
  2. Wash in an acceptable mode, with intensive rinsing, spinning at low speeds.

The hood can be washed by hand if it contains permanent knitting needles or arcs that give it its shape. For this we use:

  • cleansing with a brush dipped in soapy water;
  • wiping with a sponge and clean water;
  • polish with a clean cloth until streaks disappear.

Removable parts of the stroller can be washed by hand

Machine washing rules

You can also wash the stroller in a washing machine. This is the second stage of washing, it is also simple, and involves parts that can be removed independently: the hood, covers. Before washing the product, you need to remove stains. There are strollers where the hood can be washed by hand, as it can be removed with a screwdriver and contains iron parts. The cover is washed in an automatic machine, so it is attached with a zipper, buttons and can be easily removed. After you have removed the stains, the parts can be placed in the machine.

How to remove difficult stains?

It is possible to remove old stains from the stroller using stain removers and cleaning aerosols. Alternative methods using available home remedies are safer for the child’s health.

Mold

Fungal mold appears when the stroller comes into contact with moisture for a long time. To avoid this, you need to follow simple rules:

  • store the vehicle in a dry, ventilated area;
  • after exposure to rain or snow, wipe all parts dry;
  • After washing, dry the stroller thoroughly.

Chemical antiseptics will help destroy mold. Products that do not contain chlorine are more convenient, for example “Persol”, “Oxy Crystal”.

The order of their application:

  1. Dilute with water in the proportion indicated on the label.
  2. Treat affected areas.
  3. Leave for 15-20 minutes.
  4. Rinse and dry the product thoroughly.

Before treating with chemicals, you must wear work clothes, protective gloves, and goggles.

Among the popular methods, the use of soda, 9% vinegar, 3% hydrogen peroxide solution, and tea tree oil is popular. A slurry is made from soda and water, 1 tsp. oil dissolves in a glass of water.

Liquids are poured into a spray bottle. Apply the selected product to areas with mold and leave for 2-3 hours . After drying, the treatment areas are thoroughly wiped with a viscose napkin.

Traces of milk

Oxygen stain removers in the form of a pencil, for example Faberlic, UdalixBaby, are suitable for removing milk marks.

Rules for their use:

  • wet the stain;
  • rub with a pencil until foam appears;
  • after 10-15 minutes, remove the residue with a cloth;
  • if the milk traces are old, then you need to repeat the procedure several times.

Popular wisdom suggests using chalk, salt, sodium borate . Crushed chalk or salt is sprinkled thickly on the soaked spot in the evening. In the morning, dry crumbs are brushed off with a brush.

The dirty area is treated with an aqueous sodium solution. After half an hour, the solution is thoroughly washed off.

How to remove mold from a stroller

Previously, during the “soviet” era, all the strollers were at the entrance, and no one stole them. Now in our houses there is no way to store strollers, so many people store them on balconies. And, as you know, there is dampness, and mold starts growing there. There are many remedies for mold, but the most harmless are vinegar and soda.

  1. Vinegar works very well against fungus. There is no need to dilute 9% vinegar. Even old black mold can be washed off with vinegar. You need to treat with vinegar in a well-ventilated area, preferably on a balcony. Dampen a sponge with vinegar and wipe all fungus-affected areas on the covers. Leave for 40-50 minutes, then machine wash.
  2. Baking soda - dilute baking soda with water in a 1:1 ratio, apply this slurry to the covers, after an hour go over them with a sponge, and put them in the washing machine.

Whitening methods

It is possible to refresh the color and return the whiteness to the parts of stroller transport by bleaching. The product used depends on the type of material:

  1. Oxygen bleaches, as well as hydrogen peroxide, laundry soap, and soda are suitable for fabrics.
    The parts are immersed in an aqueous solution with ready-made bleach or peroxide for the time required for brightening. Small pieces of laundry soap along with baking soda are diluted with a small amount of water. The surface is impregnated with this mixture. After a couple of hours, the products are rinsed with plenty of water.
  2. For leatherette, citric acid or juice, shaving foam, and denatured alcohol are suitable. The selected product is carefully rubbed into the part. After a few minutes, the residue is removed with a wet cloth.

If the stroller has reflective elements, then bleaches cannot be used.

Detergents

The best option for machine washing is concentrated washing gel. Pediatricians recommend the use of detergents adapted for children. Powder products can easily leave white streaks and marks.

For manual cleaning, in addition to special gels, you can use:

  • laundry soap;
  • baby dishwashing detergent;
  • baking soda;
  • baby soap.

The choice of products depends on personal preference and convenience; all of them can easily clean the surface of dust and dirt and are completely washed off with water.

How to dry?

You need to dry the stroller so that the parts do not shrink or warp. There are rules for this:

  • washed items are shaken and carefully straightened;

  • wet parts are stretched onto the stroller frame;
  • the stroller is placed in a ventilated place, preferably on a balcony;
  • it is not allowed to be exposed to sunlight;
  • if there is no balcony, then the structure is installed away from the radiators.

It is recommended to spray the dry parts with a protective agent.

Adviсe

  1. To avoid spoiling the appearance of the stroller, you can selectively wash areas with more intense contamination. Those parts that are less susceptible to contamination (hood, pockets, sides of the cradle) are wiped with a damp sponge.
  2. Places that a child may come into contact with during walks must be washed more often and thoroughly. This part of the stroller is the cradle. It should be removed before cleaning. This is not difficult to do. The mattress from the stroller can be washed with powder, and the cradle itself can be treated with a steam cleaner.
  3. The bottom, made of plywood, should be handled with care. To avoid damage, such a part of the stroller must be protected from moisture.
  4. Seat belts and metal parts of the stroller are wiped with damp wipes.
  5. It is easier to remove a dried milk stain if you cover it with a thick layer of white chalk or table salt overnight and shake it off in the morning. You can also sprinkle the contaminated area with talcum powder and iron it through paper, and after a day clean it with a brush.
  6. Dried difficult stains of milk or juice should be removed by first lubricating them with stain remover and washing them by hand.

  1. Insert a metal arc into the hood.
  2. Put on and fasten the covers.
  3. Fasten the removable parts.
  4. If necessary, secure the hood with bolts.
  5. Install wheels.
  6. Put the cradle and envelope.
  7. Hang and place additional accessories.
