The fashion for leather clothing and accessories does not lose its relevance. But sooner or later there comes a time when you need to wash leather pants, a skirt, clean gloves or a bag. Despite their practicality, such things require an individual approach and adherence to certain washing rules.
- 1 General rules 1.1 Cleaning dry and wet
- 1.2 Hand and machine wash
- 1.3 Removing stains
General rules
Clothing and bags made of genuine leather do not tolerate washing well, so it should be used as a last resort. General recommendations:
procedure | Can | it is forbidden |
machine automatic | only if the manufacturer has indicated such a possibility, in a delicate mode | if the product contains tannins, it will shrink after washing in the automatic machine |
handwash | in cool water using liquid products | It is prohibited to use products containing chlorine or abrasive components |
drying | outdoors | inside the machine, near heating devices, in direct sunlight |
You cannot load several different leather items into the washing machine at the same time; each of them must be washed separately. It is better not to wash combined skirts, jackets made from multi-colored leather fragments at home, but immediately send them to the dry cleaner.
Cleaning dry and wet
In order not to resort to washing, care for a leather jacket, skirt, and pants should be carried out regularly. If contamination appears, it must be removed immediately. There are a huge number of professional products on the market that are completely safe for the skin. They perfectly emulsify grease stains, remove dirt from the surface, and do not affect the tanning coating or dyes. If you don’t have a special product at hand, the easiest way is to make a soap solution with laundry soap and glycerin.
Hand and machine wash
The optimal way to wash a leather jacket and other wardrobe items is by hand. It is delicate and does virtually no harm. First, you need to soak the item for 10-15 minutes.
Important! The water temperature for soaking leather products should not exceed 30 degrees.
Next, the areas of contamination are treated with a soft brush dipped in a soap solution. This can be dissolved laundry, cosmetic (without dyes and bleaches) soap, powder that does not contain aggressive components. After this, the leather product is thoroughly rinsed and shaken well.
You can wash leather trousers, gloves, and a bag in a washing machine, provided that the manufacturer has indicated this option on the label. The machine is set to the most delicate mode available. The water temperature should be from 30 to 35oC. It is better not to use the spin mode; in extreme cases, set it to no more than 300 rpm.
Advice! If there are scratches or abrasions on the skirt or pants, it is better not to machine wash the items, as the defects will appear even more.
Removing stains
The easiest way to deal with dirt stains is to use a soap solution. Place the item on a flat surface and wipe off the stains with a sponge soaked in the solution. After this, remove soap stains with a dry cloth. If this method does not help to cope with the stains, then you can make a mixture of lemon juice, water and vinegar. The components are mixed in equal parts and the stains are wiped with a moistened sponge. This method allows you to cope even with old stains. To prevent the skin from becoming rough and dry, after cleaning it is recommended to treat the skirt with baby cream.
You can clean leather gloves from greasy stains using purified gasoline that does not contain any additives. After which you will have to hang the item on the balcony or street so that the unpleasant smell disappears.
Important! Do not use acetone or nail polish remover to clean leather. They will break the protective coating and the item will be damaged.
Pen paste stains are removed using a stationery eraser and tape. First, glue the tape, carefully remove it, and erase the remaining ink with an eraser.
Is washing always recommended?
The very first thing you should do when the time comes to put something in order is to carefully study the label. Everything is stated there:
- Is it washable?
- Is dry cleaning acceptable?
- Is it worth ironing?
- what temperature the material can withstand;
- whether the product can withstand machine washing or is only hand washable;
- what detergents can be used.
This applies not only to leather, but to absolutely any item. By carefully following the information on the label, you will be able to clean or wash your clothes without causing any harm to them.
Features of working with specific products
To prevent a leather skirt from shrinking, soak it for only 10 minutes. It is forbidden to use washing powder; a solution of laundry soap and water is suitable, in which a soft brush is moistened and the skirt is lightly wiped. Afterwards the skirt is rinsed and shaken. Next, turn it inside out and wash the lining separately. Care must be taken to ensure that the lining and skin do not touch. The skirt cannot be washed more than once a month.
