How to clean linoleum from yellow stains

Linoleum is a very popular floor covering due to its technical and operational properties, reasonable price, and wide variety of color shades. It easily tolerates different types of cleaning - both dry and wet.

But sometimes hard-to-remove red or brown stains from standing metal objects that have become embedded in the material appear on it. How to remove rust from linoleum? What folk methods and special means are suitable for this, and what is not recommended to use in order to avoid damage to the contaminated surface?

Traditional methods

The materials used to get rid of stains using traditional methods are mostly publicly available, inexpensive, and can be found in almost any home:

  1. Lemon acid. Sprinkle on the rust stain and then wash off with water. To enhance the effect, dissolve 1 teaspoon of citric acid and salt in 1 glass of hot water, and treat linoleum with the resulting solution. If necessary, the procedure can be repeated.
  2. Lemon. A rag is generously moistened with lemon juice, applied to the stain and left for a while. Then the stain is wiped off with the same rag. Second option: instead of a rag, apply a piece of lemon to the rust.
  3. Acetic acid. Dissolve 1 tbsp in 1 glass of warm water. spoon of acetic acid. Immediately after treating the stain with the specified product, the stain is wiped with hydrogen nitride (ammonia).
  4. Kerosene. Generously moisten the rusted surface with the flammable mixture and leave for 30-40 minutes. After time, thoroughly wash off the kerosene with cold water.
  5. Baking soda. A natural product known for its cleansing properties, thoroughly rub the rust-affected area, then rinse with water.
  6. Potassium salt of tartaric acid (tartar). Mix 1 tbsp. l. crystals and 2 tbsp. l. water. The prepared paste is applied to the stains, wiped thoroughly with a brush, and washed with water.
  7. Soda. Carbonated drinks containing orthophosphoric acid (Fanta, Coca-Cola, etc.) cope well with the problem. You can moisten a rag with one of them and wipe the rusty areas. Another way: pour the soda into a spray bottle and apply it to the linoleum.

To obtain a more effective result, the methods can be combined with each other.

Tip: after removing rust stains from the linoleum with a woolen rag, apply linseed oil or drying oil in their place. Leave for a day, then rub the surface until shiny. This will return the coating to a well-groomed appearance.

Special means

In hardware stores you can purchase various special products for cleaning linoleum from rust stains:

  • liquid cleaning products of the Sanox series, which contain oxalic acid, which copes well with rust;
  • Cif brand cleaning cream;
  • bleach (popularly known as bleach), chlorine-containing bleaching agents (for example, “Belizna”), diluted in water in a ratio of 1:10 and applied to the rust for about 1 hour.

Before using household chemicals, it is advisable to first check the possible results of their impact on linoleum by applying a small amount of the product to an inconspicuous area of the coating. After treatment with these products, the linoleum should be thoroughly washed with warm water and wiped with lemon juice.

Important! Be sure to use gloves when cleaning linoleum from rusty stains with special products. After finishing the procedure, ventilate the room well.

What is not recommended for processing linoleum

There are products that should not be used in the fight against rust stains on linoleum.

These include:

  • water too hot;
  • drugs that have a strong alkaline reaction;
  • abrasive materials (emery, pumice, etc.);
  • aggressive disinfectants.

These products can adversely affect the condition of the coating, damage it, and ruin its appearance.

Do not be upset if rust stains are found on the linoleum. Proper use of folk methods and special means can completely eliminate this problem.

We fight yellowness and traces of walking

Washing linoleum from stubborn dirt is not the most difficult thing. Things are worse if there are yellowed spots. Light linoleum looks great in the interior, but some types are prone to yellow or brown spots. If you have light-colored linoleum, do not place rugs with a rubberized backing on it, especially if the backing is dark. You can often observe that under such a rug the coating changes color. This phenomenon is called “migration of plasticizers” and it does occur. The saddest thing is that it is very difficult to return the original color. You can try professional remedies, because all others will definitely be ineffective.

If the linoleum has turned yellow, it will be difficult to wash it

There is another problem with light linoleum - the color changes where there is more foot traffic. In general, this is not characteristic of all varieties, only some. And it is impossible to predict which one will behave this way. These could be batch characteristics or changes in technology. This also happens and such changes are also very difficult to deal with.

Restoring the shine of the floor covering

You can clean linoleum until it shines without much effort by adding a little fabric softener to the washing water.

A mixture of water and milk (1:1), which creates a kind of protective coating on the surface, will help you clean the linoleum so that it shines. For disinfection, instead of chlorine-containing liquids, a solution with vodka or vinegar is used.

2 Fighting stubborn dirt

If washing with a soap solution does not bring the desired result, then use other, more effective means. There are special liquids designed for cleaning linoleum, but effective compositions can be prepared at home.

For stubborn dirt use:

  1. 1. Alcohol solution. Add 1 part vodka or alcohol to a bucket with 5 parts water. Dissolve a handful of laundry soap shavings in the liquid. Soak a rag in this water, wring it out, and treat the contaminated surface with circular movements. This product is good for getting rid of grease stains in the kitchen.
  2. 2. Kerosene or gasoline. You can try to remove stubborn stains using these products. However, you should act carefully so as not to damage the surface of the linoleum. Soak a cotton pad with the liquid and use gentle movements without pressure to treat the stains. Afterwards, wash these areas with a soapy sponge and a damp cloth.
  3. 3. Sauerkraut. An effective folk remedy against severe pollution is sauerkraut juice. It is poured in a small amount onto the problem area, left for a few minutes and treated with a sponge. Afterwards wipe with a damp cloth.
  4. 4. Drying oil. By washing dirty linoleum with drying oil, you can not only get rid of old stains, but also give the coating shine. The liquid also prevents cracks from appearing on the material, so it is recommended to use it once every few months for preventative cleaning. Pour a little drying oil onto a clean rag and wipe the contaminated areas with it. Afterwards, take a piece of flannel and polish the treated areas.
  5. 5. Mastic. For a new coating, use a colorless liquid; it is better to clean the old one with a dark one. In addition to removing old dirt, mastic makes various defects in the material less noticeable, protects it from dust, dirt, water and mechanical damage. Use the product according to the instructions on the package.
  6. 6. Melamine sponge. A melamine sponge will help you get rid of stubborn stains without using household chemicals. The stain is moistened with a small amount of water and gently rubbed with a sponge. You need to wear gloves to avoid damaging the skin of your hands, and after cleaning, wipe the floor well to remove sponge particles.
  7. 7. Floor cleaning products “Mr. Proper”, “Mr. Muscle” and others. The liquid is added to a bucket of warm water according to the proportions specified by the manufacturer. Soak a rag in the solution, wring it out to remove excess water, and wipe the contaminated areas. Wash off with clean water.
  8. 8. Compositions for cleaning tiles. Light linoleum can be washed with a tile surface cleaner. It helps get rid of dirt and grease. Directions for use are indicated on the packaging.

Rough linoleum can be cleaned of old dirt using a slab cleaner (for example, Adriel). It is diluted in warm water before use.

Auto chemical goods

You can look in the cleaning products section of your auto store. There are definitely products for plastics and polymers. For example, LAVR is a velor and upholstery cleaner. It is also suitable for plastic and vinyl parts. Can also be used to care for home furniture. The same company - LAVR - has a plastic cleaner - you can even choose the scent there.

    Not recommended for cleaning:

    1. Abrasive materials.
    2. Products with a strong alkaline reaction.
    3. Aggressive disinfectants.
    4. Very hot water.

    Important! These products can damage the surface of the linoleum, make it dull or change color.

    To prevent dirt from accumulating on the linoleum, forming stains that are difficult to remove, it is recommended to do wet cleaning daily. Warm water, at a temperature of approximately 35 degrees, is suitable for this. You can add laundry soap or a special product to the water for washing the floor. Please note that the packaging of this flooring product indicates whether it is suitable for linoleum flooring.

    To protect the top layer of linoleum, it is better to use polish. As a result of these actions, a protective layer is formed on the surface. To give a beautiful shine, it is recommended to rub the linoleum coating with linseed oil or drying oil once a month. This will also protect against cracks.

    Linoleum has turned yellow - how to clean it? Many flooring owners have asked a similar question. Experts say that it is useless to fight the yellow spots that appear on the coating. Or extremely difficult. Because they are not on the surface, but inside the material. To avoid problems with how to wash light linoleum from yellowness, measures must be taken in advance.

    Measures may be as follows:

    1. To prevent the top layer of coating, which protects linoleum from yellowing and destruction, from being destroyed, it is necessary to use emulsions. The industry has specially developed compositions that help extend the service life of the material.
    2. Regular wet cleaning using mild detergents and rinsing with clean water. Then plasticizers (special substances that impart elasticity to the coating) are not destroyed and yellowness does not appear.
    3. Periodically (once every 3 months) use special polishes for rolled finishing materials. This coating preserves the top layer and does not allow dirt to penetrate into the deeper layers. And the problem of how to wash light linoleum from yellowness disappears by itself.

    Timely care of linoleum and the use of gentle care products will ensure long-term preservation of the coating. The problem of how and with what to wash yellowed linoleum is easily solved. The most effective thing is preventive care and careful attitude.

    Removing stains from linoleum

    This coating easily withstands dry and wet cleaning. But before you start removing the stain, you should determine the type of contamination. The most common of them are:

    • from fat;
    • from spilled greenery or iodine;
    • the appearance of mold;
    • rust marks;
    • ink stains from a marker or felt-tip pen;
    • drops of paint.

    Once the type of contamination has been determined, it is necessary to choose the correct method for eliminating it.

    Green stains

    The bottle of brilliant green solution cannot always be opened carefully, so it may accidentally spill on the floor. It is easiest to remove fresh markings before they become too deeply ingrained into the surface. It is wiped with a solution of powder and warm water until it disappears. If the pattern on the linoleum is light in color, then use bleaches: chlorine gels, hydrogen peroxide or laundry soap.

    When you try to wash a stain from linoleum with a cloth, do not spread it too much beyond the blot so that the area of contamination does not increase. Then moisten cotton wool with hydrogen peroxide and wipe off the remaining brilliant green. As the tampons become dirty, they need to be changed until there is no trace left of the stains.

    If hydrogen peroxide is not available, you can sprinkle soda on the brilliant green and pour a thin stream of vinegar over it. At the same time, the foam will absorb the color. The procedure can be repeated several times, since this method is safe for linoleum.

    White spirit or other alcohol can help remove an old green stain from a medical antiseptic. Do the following procedure:

    1. Protect your hands with rubber gloves from the harmful effects of the cleaning product.
    2. Soak a kitchen sponge in one of the above solutions and remove the brilliant green with it. If it is strongly ingrained into the surface of the linoleum, then the solution should be poured for 10-15 minutes, and then wipe the area again.
    3. After working with solvents, rinse the area with clean water to completely remove any remaining household chemicals.

    How to remove brilliant green

    It is very difficult to wash off the brilliant green from the coating. This is easier to do before the blots have had time to dry.

    1. Before removing stains on linoleum, blot them with a soft cloth. Do this carefully, being careful not to smudge the green puddle or increase the volume of the mark.
    2. When the liquid from the floor has been collected, take camphor alcohol or a bottle of peroxide. Dampen the cotton and start wiping the stain.
    3. The cotton wool will quickly turn green, replace it with a new one. Repeat the procedure until the brilliant green is washed off.

    A simple and affordable way to remove brilliant green stains from linoleum is with baking soda and vinegar. Sprinkle baking soda generously over the mark and begin pouring vinegar on top in a thin stream. A violent chemical reaction will begin. The resulting foam will “pull” the brilliant green from the coating. This method is absolutely safe for the floor, and it can be repeated as long as necessary for the stain to fade.

    How to restore shine to linoleum

    There are several ways to help restore the original shiny surface of linoleum:

    1. Dissolve milk in water (1:1) and rinse the floor with this solution several times.
    2. Wipe with a soft cloth and soapy water and dry the coating thoroughly. Then treat it with a woolen cloth with the addition of drying oil or vegetable oil. (First test the method on an inconspicuous area, since oil solutions can erase paint from some linoleums).
    3. Treat the floor with mastic.

    The service life of linoleum will be extended if you use these tips:

    1. Avoid using hot water, hard tools and abrasives.
    2. Chemicals with strong alkalis and acids can damage paint.
    3. Use special products designed for caring for PVC products.
    4. Remove stains immediately after they occur.
    5. All dirt can be removed using window cleaners that contain alcohol.

    The service life of linoleum will increase if you treat it with care and regularly care for such a coating. Hard brushes and harsh chemicals contribute to wear. If stains suddenly appear on the linoleum, try to remove them immediately so that they do not spoil its appearance and the structure of the material. Remember these tips, and the floor will delight both you and the guests of your home with cleanliness.

    Eraser

    Black streaks from shoes at the front door are a fairly common problem. It is difficult to get rid of it using traditional detergents, so a stationery eraser comes to the rescue in this situation. It quickly copes even with stubborn dirt.

    Shoe marks can be easily erased with an eraser

    To eliminate dark streaks, you need to rub an eraser over them, and then remove the residue with a dry cloth and wash the linoleum with soapy water. In addition, chewing gum is removed in this way. To do this, follow the instructions:

    1. Apply an ice cube to the chewing gum for 2-3 minutes.
    2. Carefully remove dirt with a knife.
    3. Wipe off any remaining chewing gum with an eraser.
    4. Wash the linoleum with soapy water.
    5. Dry the surface of the floor covering with a dry cloth.

    The eraser helps get rid of green stains, grease, iodine, coffee and other contaminants. If this method does not help, then you will have to turn to help, alcohol, vinegar or solvents.
