Classic Punch recipe
This is the original version that became the basis for many other recipes. It was introduced to Europe from India in the early 17th century.
List of components:
- Hot water – 700 ml;
- Rum – 350 ml;
- Black tea in leaves - 2 teaspoons;
- Medium lemon;
- Granulated sugar - 3 large spoons.
Making a classic alcoholic Punch:
- Boil water and cool slightly, brew tea with it, leave for 12-15 minutes, then strain through a strainer;
- Add rum, fresh juice from one lemon, add sugar and stir thoroughly;
- Pour the liquid mixture into a deep container (for example, a saucepan) and heat over a low flame for about 15 minutes. It is important not to exceed the temperature limit of 70 degrees, otherwise the alcohol base will begin to disintegrate, and the taste will change for the worse;
- Remove the saucepan from the stove and pour the contents.
Typically served in special tea glasses with cup holders or in porcelain or ceramic cups.

Punch ingredients and formulas
Meanwhile, the traditions of “punching” evolved very quickly. The classic recipe has long been forgotten. It is now interpreted as a mixture of fruit juice, spices and sugar, fortified with wine and rum. There is no shame in using honey instead of sugar, or bourbon or brandy instead of rum. Among all sorts of teetotalers, they even call an ordinary compote a punch - this is a non-alcoholic punch. But if you want to understand alcoholic beverages and follow traditions, do not forget about the “five-part” basis of the first punches. In Europe they look at it this way:
Formulas for “European” punch
Classic punch = (hot wine + sugar + spices) + fruit juice/fruits/berries + rum
Burning/fiery punch = ((sugar + rum/cognac)*set on fire) + (hot wine + spices + sugar) + fruit juice/fruits/berries
Cold punch = classic punch + ice
Non-alcoholic punch = fruit juice/compote + fresh and/or canned berries/fruits

Do I need to snack on punch?
A low-alcohol drink doesn't need a serious snack

Apples, pears, oranges, kiwis, tangerines are combined with punch.

- stewed fish.
Sweet alcohol harmonizes with chocolate. But since it is sweet in itself, do not offer milk chocolate to your guests. Bitter is suitable, as well as bitter with additives: spices, nuts, pepper

New Year's punch
Ingredients:
- 0.5 liters of rum and the same amount of cognac
- Juice of one lemon
- 6 oranges
- A little grated nutmeg
- Pinch of cinnamon
- 60 carnations
Quite an unusual punch recipe for a New Year's party. You need to stick ten cloves into each orange, after which the oranges are placed in the oven and baked until the rind turns brown. Next, you need to put the oranges in a saucepan, pour alcohol into it, heat to 70 degrees, add lemon juice to the mixture. When the drink is heated, nutmeg is added to it, and the mixture is poured into punch glasses or into specially prepared cups.
By the way, the amount of ingredients is given for 8-15 people, so for a pleasant evening with a cup of punch for two, you need to take a smaller number of ingredients.
These recipes are enough to prepare original drinks for a New Year's feast or a large noisy party for 10-20 people. Good luck in celebrating the New Year!
Philadelphia Fish House Punch
In "Imbibe!" David Wondrich wrote (freely translated by an author new to the original language): “Philadelphia Fish House Punch deserves protection by law, education in schools, and should be on every table during the Fourth of July celebration.” This recipe was invented by a group of rebellious colonial Americans - fishermen, politicians and similar Philadelphians - who founded the Schuylkill Fishing Company of Pennsylvania, also known as the State in Schuylkill, in 1732. The club members actually declared themselves a sovereign state and continue to pursue this line to this day.
Heady and heavy, Philadelphia Fish House Punch is meant for lazy summer afternoons (or—if heated like mulled wine—lazy winter weekends), so we don't recommend combining it with any plans, fishing or otherwise.

Origin story
The drink called punch is known all over the world, but few know what the word itself means - the name of the product, and some cannot see the logic in such a name at all. But in fact there is logic. Moreover, this name contains the whole essence of the drink. Don't believe me? The word “punch” comes from Sanskrit, where it means “five”. And what is the logic here, you ask? The fact is that initially punch was made from 5 ingredients: sugar, alcohol, lemon, water or tea and spices (although some argue that this five consisted of wine, honey, rum, tea or juice and water). And it was the Indians who were the first to make this refreshing drink.
Around the 17th century, English sailors brought the recipe for this drink to Europe, where the novelty quickly found fans. People liked the taste of this low-alcohol drink. Its popularity quickly grew, the recipe literally spread around the world, but almost every country added its own favorite ingredients to the classic composition of the punch. So around the 1630s, a new favorite drink appeared in Britain - Christmas punch, to which wine or brandy was always added. But after the British tried Jamaican rum, brought by travelers in the mid-17th century, they began making rum-based punch. And by the way, the world-famous milk punch was also invented by the British.
According to another version, punch was invented by pirates. Do you remember that on the flag of these conquerors of the seas there is a pirate with a mug in his hands? So, supporters of this version are sure that there is punch in the mug. But they disagreed about which pirates invented the punch - English or Caribbean ones. They say that both of them drank something resembling punch - rum diluted with tea. But they didn’t do this out of a passionate desire to experiment and create interesting cocktails. Everything is so banal. In those days, the taste of rum was very far from modern quality and in order to dull the bitterness of the alcohol (and they drank it as a preventative against colds), pirates began to dilute it with sweet tea.
But punch reached Russia only in the 18th century. But I immediately fell in love so much that a new word even appeared in the lexicon. Since that time, Russians began to “punch,” that is, gather in groups and enjoy punch.

History of the drink
The classic recipe for alcoholic punch is a drink based on fruit juice. But then it was combined with other components or replaced with tea. Over time, non-alcoholic versions were created based on milk and chocolate, and many different spices were added to the drink.
Experts distinguish two versions of the occurrence of punch. According to the first, the drink was invented in India, but it was not very widespread there. Then English sailors tried it and took the recipe to their homeland. On the road, its composition changed many times, some ingredients were replaced by others, others were excluded or, conversely, added. This is how punsh reached Europe, with an impressive variety of options and tastes.
According to the second version, the drink was created in sultry Jamaica, an island where rum and sugar cane were always in abundance. The British were also the first to learn about it and transported several liters of alcohol to Great Britain, from where it spread throughout Europe. Initially, punch was cooked for the Christmas holidays and served exclusively hot to warm up in cold weather.
