Columbia omni-heat technology: myths and reality

Omni-Heat technology is an innovative development of the Columbia brand, specializing in the production of sportswear and equipment. The idea is not new - it was first described and announced back in 2010.

The essence of Omni-Heat is its unique temperature regulation. There are silver dots on the inner surface of the clothing that return its own warmth to the human body. A comfortable temperature is maintained much more effectively, while excess moisture is removed. According to studies, compared to conventional insulation, it is possible to achieve 20% more heat retention.

How to wash by hand correctly?

To preserve the original characteristics of the jacket longer, it is better to wash it by hand. But this, of course, is only relevant for people who wear things carefully, without leaving complex, difficult-to-remove stains on them.

It is very difficult to wash a down jacket simply in a bathtub or basin, since it becomes very heavy when wet. Therefore, it is recommended to wash by hanging the jacket on hangers secured with a rope above the bathtub.

The hangers should be wide and strong, otherwise the wet jacket will fall off them. Before washing, the down jacket is completely buttoned up to the very top of the neck.

The item must first be thoroughly wetted with a shower, and then all areas should be treated with a sponge and soapy water. The following can be used as a solution:

  • delicate washing gel;
  • laundry soap soaked in water;
  • any shampoo;
  • You can take a cleaning product for upholstered furniture.

Omni-Heat down jackets should never be cleaned with rough brushes. The use of aggressive abrasive detergents is not allowed. By breaking these rules, you can easily ruin the item.

After the front side of the down jacket has been washed, it needs to be removed and turned inside out.

Washing lining fabric should be done with no less care and caution.

After finishing the treatment with soapy water, you need to rinse the jacket thoroughly with cool water from the shower on both sides. This process requires care and patience. If a little soap composition remains on the fabric, after the product dries, it will turn into whitish stains.

The washed jacket is not wrung out or twisted. It is simply left to drain on hangers for 3-4 hours, and then laid out on bath towels for further drying.

To make the jacket dry faster and avoid a musty smell, it is advisable to place it close to the battery. In addition, it must be periodically turned over and turned one way or the other.

Manual cleaning of down jackets

Columbia Omni-Heat winter jackets can be washed without a washing machine. The algorithm is quite simple:

  1. The product must be hung on a strong rope.
  2. Water with cool water.
  3. Apply detergent to the down jacket.
  4. After processing the front side, process the back side.
  5. Rinse the jacket thoroughly.

Fresh, small stains can be removed with a damp cloth. The sooner you remove stains, the higher the likelihood of success.

Shoes

Both outerwear and warm shoes are indispensable in the frosty season.

The most popular product in recent years has been the men's Columbia Bugaboot Omni-Heat boots. The shoes are equipped with a waterproof membrane that helps overcome even the deepest snowdrifts, wet snow and slush.

Michelin Winter Outdoor Compound is a sole created using the latest innovative technologies. It provides excellent traction on the snowiest and most slippery surfaces. The shoes retain their characteristics up to a temperature of -30 oC. A nice feature of the model is that it is made of natural leather materials. Protection from dirt is provided by the shoe's ultra-light overshoes. The average price of this model ranges from 7,000 to 10,000 rubles, depending on the color and seasonal discounts.

The Columbia Omni-Heat women's boots are considered an ideal option for the fair sex. Like men's models, they have all the necessary characteristics: frost resistance, excellent grip, high-quality material and a unique sporty style. A wider range of colors has been developed for girls, so that the fair sex can choose warm shoes to match different outfits.

All about COLUMBIA. Technologies, sizes, materials. Let's get to know each other better.

February and March are the time of maximum discounts on warm clothes for the outgoing winter. I have long noticed that it is during these months that most stores, especially in the USA, sell out of jackets, overalls, etc., reducing prices to the minimum.

And of course, many take the opportunity to buy quality new clothes for the next season. For yourself and your children.

Here I will tell you in detail about one of the most popular and beloved brands of innovative clothing - Columbia.

About technology: what we get when buying things made from fabric with a specific name and how to choose among them the one that suits your expectations.

About sizes: how not to make a mistake.

My personal shopping experience.

I will also give links to popular stores where you can buy them at a good price.

A useful cheat sheet for all occasions when meeting with Columbia! Maximum information about this brand.

I think that among people of our generation, there are practically no people who think that “synthetics are bad” and not good. And everyone understands that the fabric composition on the label “polyester” or “nylon” has long been a pure formality, because in reality it can have hundreds of options with very different properties.

And of course, modern “synthetics” in terms of comfort, practicality and health benefits have surpassed “natural cotton” or wool by an unattainable distance.

But synthetics are also different from synthetics. And it’s really good and cool, if it’s not a Chinese “little dog”, but branded materials created using patented technologies. Which actually deliver on their promises.

Columbia designs its clothing and footwear using science and hands-on research, studying the body and the external environment. Technologies can be applied zonally in the “right places”. Different fabrics for different purposes. Where there is maximum heat transfer from the body and it is necessary to preserve it, where there is increased abrasion of matter and it is necessary to protect it, where there is increased sweating and it is necessary to increase “breathing”.. etc. Thus, one thing can be literally “stuffed” with cool features :).

How can you tell what kind of fabric it is by its name? Each well-known “advanced” brand has its own features, developments and names.

The Columbia brand uses the following

Columbia Omni-Tech

— Protects from water and “breathes.”
This is a waterproof membrane
that removes evaporation. Breathable, durable protection from water and wind, repels dirt.

The patented OutDry lamination system allows for unsurpassed waterproofness, breathability and lightness of the product.

Columbia uses an invisible water-repellent DWR (Durable Water Repellent) treatment on the outer surface of the fabric to prevent water from being absorbed, but beading up.

Columbia Omni-Heat down jackets are hand washable

You can also wash the Columbia Omni-Heat down jacket by hand. To do this, put it on a hanger, and hang the hanger on a rope above the bathtub. Using a clean washcloth, water and laundry soap (you can use shampoo or liquid detergent), wipe the outside of the down jacket

Pay special attention to the most contaminated areas. Then wash it all off with water. If necessary, turn the down jacket inside out and wipe it in the same way from the inside.

Be careful here, as you are dealing with the capricious Omni-Heat technology. You shouldn’t twist the down jacket after washing: just squeeze out the excess water slightly and let it drip over the bathtub for several hours. Then dry it using the same method described above.

  • You should wash a down jacket only when necessary; if you have the opportunity not to do this, then don’t do it. It’s better to wipe, wipe off the dirt, rub only the top fabric and do not experiment with Omni-Heat, it is very capricious and sensitive to improper use.
  • Columbia down jackets with Omni-Heat technology can be washed, but dry cleaning is safer. Many people write about this on forums and advise you to be careful.

Columbia is a brand of reliable, lightweight and durable clothing that is quite popular among tourists. Winter jackets sold under this brand provide warmth and an increased level of comfort. They are comfortable both for everyday wear and during sports. This is due to the presence of a special coating. It provides rapid evaporation of steam, blocking wind and repelling water.

Branded clothing is of high quality. The only disadvantage of such things is the difficulty of care. If you ignore the recommendations, you can greatly spoil the appearance of the down jacket. Columbia products are created using Omni-Heat technology.

Before you start washing, you must familiarize yourself with the following rules:

  1. If the down jacket has a down edge, unfasten it. If this is not possible, washing at home will have to be abandoned.
  2. The jacket is placed in the washing machine inside out.
  3. The laces are tied, and the buttons and zippers are fastened.
  4. Heavily contaminated areas are pre-washed.
  5. If the jacket consists of an outer part and an inner lining, they must be washed separately.
  6. Outerwear made of membrane fabric should not be soaked.
  7. The cleaning product must be tested before use. This will prevent the fibers from breaking.

COLUMBIA for sports

Ordinary people often ask the question: What is the difference between clothing for professional athletes and clothing that consumers buy in stores.

Let's look at this issue using the example of the equipment that COLUMBIA made for freestyle. Columbia equipment was made specifically for the Winter Olympic Games in Sochi for three teams:

Sportswear for the Russian national team:

Sportswear for the USA team:

Sportswear for Team Canada

If we take the technological component, then the latest technologies are tested on clothing for professional athletes, and technologies put into mass production are also used. OMNI-HEAT THERMAL REFLECTIVE technology is used as the main technology in freestyle equipment. This is silver dot technology, in which, as mentioned earlier, the required amount of heat remains under the clothing, and excess heat is removed bypassing the silver dots. And a completely new LighTrail technology was tested - a high-tech zipper, which is not yet used in mass production, hopefully for now.

A zipper made using this technology is practically invisible on clothing and is waterproof. The LighTrail zipper is much lighter than its “toothy” counterparts and more flexible. The zipper is “sewn” to the fabric using a laser and special glue; the zipper pawl is made in such a way that when closed, neither water nor air leaks through it. Columbia took several years to develop the LightTrail zipper.

If we take into account the cut and individual selection for different sports, then clothing for professional athletes has nothing in common with clothing for the mass consumer. When making clothes for freestyle skiers, COLUMBIA designers literally followed on the heels of the athletes, having reviewed a lot of competitions. The personal wishes of the athletes were also taken into account. The result was a masterpiece of equipment in the full sense of the word. The clothes turned out to be very light, not hindering movements when performing tricks. For moguls, one of the freestyle disciplines, nuances that are applicable only to this sport were added to the equipment. When passing the course of hillocks and jumps, the athlete’s legs work like a spring and in order to hide their forward movements, Columbia designers came up with a snow camouflage that merged with the track and made the movements of the legs almost invisible.

For halfpipe, another freestyle discipline, when athletes perform tricks while moving along a chute, the equipment is made longer for the beauty of perception and comfort of the athletes.

From all of the above, we can conclude that clothing for professional athletes is undoubtedly different from clothing sold in stores, but they have common points.

Jackets with Omni-Heat

Jackets with Omni-Heat technology are equipped with a special breathable Thermal Reflective layer. It consists of an aluminum lining with a layer of silver dots that reflect the heat of the human body. The jacket is 20% more effective at maintaining a comfortable microclimate without letting warm air out.

Excess moisture is removed, which allows you to maintain human comfort. In 2010, the company conducted large-scale testing of new products in the most severe climatic conditions. The volunteers went to the ski resort of Chamonix in France. The sports equipment showed good results under temperature changes and withstood strong winds and snowfalls. Some athletes climbed Mont Blanc, where the Omni-Heat jacket also performed well. For harsh climatic conditions, a jacket from Columbia with this technology is perfect. The brand uses natural down and feathers as insulation, which allows you to warm a person even in the harshest climatic conditions.

Omni-Heat Boots

Columbia's Omni-Heat boots were a breakthrough in the athletic shoe market. The main innovation was the presence of a lithium ion battery: thanks to it, you can turn on the heating of the entire sole at any necessary moment. When there is no need for additional warmth, the boots can be worn as regular shoes.

The battery life is from 4 to 6 hours, then it can be charged using a regular USB cable. The manufacturer offers several different models of boots for the winter - both with low tops and high ones. Options are available for women, men and children.

Another feature of winter shoes with Omni-Heat is an improved sole. It has a high-quality tread that protects against slipping.

DeWALT DCHJ062B

Photo: https://market.yandex.ru

Despite the fact that the manufacturer positions this model as heated clothing, the heating element, battery and control panel are sold separately (at least in many stores). The jacket has three heating modes, which is indicated by the color on the indicator: white, red and blue. To run the heat supply function, you need a battery adapter, a battery (10.8/12V Li-ion or 18/20V Li-ion) and a charger. At the same time, using the USB output located on the adapter, you can charge your smartphone. A DeWalt 20V MAX and 12V MAX battery will do. By the way, the first of them provides up to 7 hours of heat supply.

About the presentation of new technology

In the fall of 2011, the long-awaited presentation of the new winter collection from Columbia took place, which was produced using innovative Columbia Omni-Heat Thermal Reflective technology. The first testing of the new product took place at the 2010 Olympic Games. The entire Canadian team wore this brand and won the entire podium in cross-country skiing. This shows the practical result of using this technology in the best possible way.

Its meaning is that the clothes in this collection involve “smart” thermoregulation. Natural human heat is reflected from the soft aluminum pad and returns back to the owner, and excess heat and moisture are removed outside. Unlike other insulation materials, Columbia Omni-Heat can retain up to 20% of heat.

At the presentation, everyone could test thermal underwear, jackets and suits from Columbia. I even had the opportunity to go skiing and talk about my impressions. Then there was a reception and a briefing.

All guests were extremely pleased with the presentation of new technology from a famous American brand.

COLUMBIA Technologies

In the field of technology, Columbia went in four main directions:

Technologies in the field of insulation

Technologies in this category allow you to keep warm in any weather conditions.

OMNI-HEAT REFLECTIVE

It is based on the reflection of a person’s own heat from silvery points located on the fabric, while excess heat and moisture pass freely between the silvery points and are removed outside without causing overheating and wetting of the body.

TURBO DOWN

The essence of the technology is a combination of down, Omni-Heat synthetic insulation and an Omni-Heat Reflective layer with silver dots. The combination of these materials allows you to retain heat even when wet. This technology is used in the manufacture of jackets.

OMNI-HEAT ELECTRIC

With this technology, clothing and shoes are heated through heating elements integrated into clothing and shoes, which are powered by metal hydride rechargeable batteries. Clothes, shoes and gloves are made using this technology.

Technologies in the field of moisture protection

Technologies in this category allow you to remove moisture evaporated by the body.

OMNI-TECH

The essence of the technology is a microporous membrane that does not allow moisture to penetrate inside the product. It is used in the manufacture of outerwear, jackets and trousers.

OUTDRY

A technology in which shoes and gloves are laminated, allowing them to be waterproof on one side and breathable on the other. Used in the manufacture of shoes and gloves.

OMNI-DRY

Super breathable waterproof protection. The highest percentage of waterproofness and breathability. Used in the manufacture of shoes and gloves.

OMNI-WICK and OMNI-WICK EVAP

A technological system for removing vapors from the body, moisture is quickly absorbed into the fabric and evaporates. You can spend a lot of time actively wearing clothes made from this fabric without fear of sweating. Jackets, shirts, jumpers, underwear and accessories are made from this fabric.

Comfort technologies

Technologies and scientific developments in this category allow you to feel comfortable even in hot weather.

OMNI-FREEZE

Technology that helps regulate temperature and feel cool even in hot weather. Flat threads made of special fiber increase the area of contact with the body, allowing heat to be transferred and thereby cooling the body. T-shirts, sweatshirts, T-shirts, and tennis shirts are made using this technology.

OMNI-FREEZE ZERO

The technology of blue dots applied to the fabric allows them to react with sweat, due to which the temperature of the fabric decreases, evaporating moisture and the body cools. Shirts, T-shirts, T-shirts, and sports running shoes are made using this technology. PROTECTION Technologies in this category will protect you from any vagaries of nature, be it a rocky road, strong wind or a swarm of mosquitoes.

OMNI-SHADE

The technology blocks ultraviolet rays, protecting against radiation and harmful effects of sunlight. This technology is used to produce sweatshirts, T-shirts, tennis shirts, shorts, jackets, and trousers.

INSECT BLOCKER

A new trend in clothing manufacturing, special impregnation of fabric will eliminate the need to use insect repellent spray. Withstands about 70 washes.

TECHLITE

This technology is used in the manufacture of soles and insoles, making them lighter. The sole made using this technology absorbs shock very well, allowing you to protect the foot and has increased wear resistance. Insoles made using this technology have antimicrobial properties and do not absorb odors. Soles and insoles are made using this technology.

OMNI-SHIELD

This technology does not allow liquids with a temperature below 77 degrees Celsius to be absorbed, repelling them. Clothing made from this fabric dries much faster than usual due to the fact that it absorbs less moisture. Trousers, jackets and accessories are made using this technology.

OMNI-WIND BLOCK

Wind protection technology. A high-tech fabric membrane will protect you in any, even very strong and piercing wind. At the same time, it allows the body to breathe, removing evaporation. Jackets, jumpers, and sweatshirts are made using this technology.

OMNI-GRIP

Shoe sole manufacturing technology. Shoes made using this technology have increased traction due to a specially selected rubber composition for certain surfaces. The technology is used to make shoe soles.

How to wash Omni-Heat

The Omni-Heat coating is wash sensitive. To ensure that the down jacket does not lose its performance properties, it must be washed correctly. From the very beginning, the thing needs to be prepared.

It is better to unfasten the natural or artificial edge in the hood area. Tighten all laces and tie them well.

It is better to fasten fasteners, rivets and zippers first.

If the jacket is heavily soiled, it is recommended to pre-wash it by hand. To do this, you can use a gentle stain remover, baby soap or shampoo.

The down jacket must be turned inside out; only in this form can it be placed in the drum of the washing machine. If the trim on the hood is made of natural fur and cannot be detached, such models cannot be washed by themselves; they must be dry cleaned.

Most models with Omni-Heat can also be washed in a regular washing machine. The manufacturer recommends choosing a delicate mode - it will help preserve all the properties of the clothing and not damage its fabric.

A pre-prepared down jacket is placed into the drum of the machine. The detergent compartment is filled with gel intended for washing delicate items. It works much more effectively than powder, retains color better and does not leave white streaks.

The delicate mode is set and the temperature is not higher than 30o. If there is a special mode designed for down items, you need to use it.

After finishing washing, it is recommended to rinse the item a couple more times to remove white stains.

You won’t be able to wring out a jacket with membrane fabric with your own hands – it will require too much effort. It is better to entrust this to the machine, but the rotation speed of the drum should be minimal so as not to damage the dotted surface.

To prevent the down from bunching up, the down jacket can be washed with tennis balls or other accessories that help distribute the filler evenly throughout the interior. You can also use special detergents for washing down items.

How to dry your Columbia Omni-Heat down jacket

Next, dry the down jacket by laying it on oilcloth

It is important that no part of it remains curled up, because then it will be difficult to dry. You can also place the down jacket near heat sources - for example, a radiator or a heater, but in no case on them

In addition, an important thing in drying a Columbia Omni-Heat down jacket is to periodically knock down the down during drying so that it does not form lumps. This should be done according to the same principle as you knock down a pillow. If you forget about this and comas occur, try breaking them up by hand on an already dry down jacket and fluffing it well. Then direct a powerful jet of steam from the iron onto it and repeat the process. Repeat this cycle until the down jacket regains its previous appearance and all the lumps have been removed.

Some people recommend washing the Columbia Omni Heat down jacket by throwing hard tennis balls into the washing machine. They should knock down fluff during washing so that it does not form clumps

However, it is important that the balls are absolutely clean and used exclusively for this purpose. It is also advisable that they be white so as not to leave colored stains on the down jacket

We do not recommend using them, because the mirror surface of the Omni Hit down jacket may be damaged. The strength of the outer fabric and the inner fabric of the Omni-Heat is different, which means the Omni-Heat has a greater chance of coming apart at the seams.

Columbia Omni-Heat Thermal Electric Circuit

Photo: https://market.yandex.ru

The outer layer is water-repellent and all seams are completely waterproof, as is the zipper. Part of the heating system is Omni-Heat fabric, which reflects a person's own heat as well as the heat that comes from the heating element. The heating elements themselves are located in pockets on both sides at waist level. This system is controlled by a rather small brain, which manages the heat supply. The system is powered by two lithium-ion batteries, which are comparable in size to a flip phone. Rechargeable batteries that can be recharged via the included AC adapter or any USB port. But the most interesting thing about this system is that the heating elements do not get hot, meaning you will not accidentally burn yourself on them. When you turn on the system, heat is supplied through the bottom of the jacket as well as the sleeves (at the wrists).

I bought a Columbia OMNI-TECH jacket at Sportmaster in Anapa. Complete G-NO. The fluff creeps in a lot. When you take it off, you look like a chicken. It’s still very cold.

Dmitriy

Hello. I’ll immediately start criticizing Columbia (the company). Previously, it was a quality brand for affordable money. What I felt on myself in 2021 from clothes - I can’t even call it garbage. This is complete trash. On the market, things are of better quality and look better. What kind of garbage and slag are you trying? Things from AliExpress are of high quality. The jacket has feathers coming out of it, worse than a cheap Chinese down jacket. Complete crap. The trousers, made of cotton, are the same crap, they look worse than those of a homeless person. You've gone downhill, Columbia, it couldn't be worse. I told and showed this to everyone. You are now a consumer goods product, and a gardener worse than the market. There, the quality is better than yours. (And once you had really high-quality and good things) you screwed everything up.

A month ago my husband and I bought a Columbia jacket with Imni Hit, at -5 I’m already freezing, I have to wear a very warm sweater, the cold is especially felt at the seams on the shoulders, you go into the store and come out completely wet, this layer doesn’t breathe at all. We bought the jacket at Sportmaster, they fell for the advertisement that even at -30 you won’t freeze. The only plus is that it's lightweight.

I move around on the playground, follow the child, push on the swing, play ball, but this doesn’t help. the jacket feels like it's chilling me! When I walk quickly it warms me up, but as soon as I stop I freeze:005:

This is me at -2 degrees, but what will happen at -10?

under the bottom I tried badlons and sweaters with different compositions - the result was the same, I ran home and warmed up under the blanket for another hour :(

Yesterday I bought a suit, I’m very, very cold, the saleswoman said that I wouldn’t freeze in it even at the North Pole. In the evening I decided to take a breather, went out onto the balcony in it, stood for about 10 minutes and began to freeze. Who has the same suit, do you freeze in it? My husband says it’s not the suit’s fault - it’s just you being like that :gy: . I want to go and take it today.

Flaws:

cold, not worth the money

From the very first days, fluff began to come out, at a temperature of -2 it was already cold, it was blowing. I can’t imagine what will happen at minus 20-25. This jacket is more suitable for spring or autumn. Overall very disappointed with the purchase.

It's a great waste of money. It might be suitable for autumn-spring, but I was counting on winter. For 12 rubles you could buy a long, warm down jacket. When I looked at it in the store, I doubted it - it was too thin. But the consultant convinced me that it was very warm, especially if you put on thermal underwear and a fleece blouse. I said about the jacket that technology has come a long way, and thanks to this I definitely won’t freeze. I tested it for the first time at -1 - it froze within half an hour! The Columbia Omni hit jacket is out! Like it should be warm during active recreation and sports. Manufacturers write the following about it: -it warms, gives off heat back, does not heat up in the cold, does not stain, does not need to be ironed, and is generally super duper!!!! The reality turned out to be different. So: - It warms if you put it on at 0 degrees or at above-zero temperatures. — there is a skirt inside, which, if you forget to fasten it, can seriously freeze you. — Although I took my size, the jacket is a little short((((It’s a pity! It barely covers my butt! — the material is, of course, good, I bought a white jacket, it’s easily soiled, but FANTASTIC!!! as soon as it got a little dirty, I took an ordinary wet napkin for one or two the jacket is clean again!!!! - At the ends of the sleeves there are these slits for the thumbs, they are pulled up very high!!!! So if you put your fingers in, it pulls very hard! The manufacturers probably wanted to create the effect of half gloves, I can say... it didn’t work out they have (((( - a hood!!!! It’s just some kind of horror! small, your head won’t fit! And if you push it in by force, you’ll look like you’ll laugh out loud!!! - Faux fur, rare, and unpleasant to the touch . I immediately changed the fur for myself. I bought the jacket at Sportmaster for 8990 rubles. I regretted it literally at the first frost. Despite the fact that I ski and skate. It’s very cold in this jacket, unfortunately. I still hoped for quality! I was disappointed (( (((and it’s all because of advertising! Omni hit! Omni hit! I also thought that maybe I had gotten a fake, but no. Real jacket!!!! This makes it doubly unpleasant.

All winter jacket models have a transformable hood that can be removed and put on depending on weather conditions and taste preferences. All models have a “skirt” for protection from cold, wind and snow, as well as sleeves that create an imitation of gloves. These characteristics provide the buyer with additional protection in cold weather and help maintain warmth throughout the day.

Women's jackets from Columbia Omni-Heat are presented in a large assortment of colors and sizes. The price category of the collection allows you to choose an option that suits your pocket: the most budget model will cost you 5,000-6,000 rubles, and the most expensive - from 20,000 rubles and more. A special feature is that most models can be compactly rolled up and folded almost into a pocket, which makes transporting clothes as convenient as possible.

What to pay attention to

Columbia down jackets are expensive, so it will be a shame if the item gets damaged during washing or drying. To prevent such an incident from happening, you need to adhere to the following rules:

  1. Do not use any chlorine-containing bleaches to clean contaminated areas.
  2. Do not dry your down jacket on a radiator or over a gas stove. This not only contributes to the appearance of yellow stains, but can also lead to a fire.
  3. It is not recommended to iron Columbia omni heat jackets with a regular iron. To smooth the fabric, you can only use a special steamer.

With proper care, the Columbia down jacket will keep its owner warm for years, even in the most severe frosts. If you are not sure that the item will be washed properly at home, then it is better to contact a dry cleaner.

Specialists know exactly how to clean such clothes without damaging them.

“Columbia” is a world-famous clothing brand, the main differences of which are the high quality of its products and their incredible comfort. Jackets of this brand have proven themselves to be the best, thanks to their practicality, reliability and excellent weather protection. All over the world, they appreciate the comfortable and lightweight outerwear of this brand, which is perfect for both sports and everyday wear. If you are the happy owner of such a wardrobe item, then sooner or later you will be faced with the question of how to wash a Columbia jacket, since over time even such a practical fabric becomes dirty.

How to wash a Columbia Omni-Heat down jacket in the washing machine

When using an automatic machine, you should choose gentle SMS (synthetic detergents) and delicate mode. Tennis balls are especially popular. They are used to prevent fluff from clumping. Not all housewives share this opinion. Many believe that this method has a negative impact on the performance of the down jacket. After washing, the Columbia product must be shaken.

Temperature

It should not exceed 30°C. It is advisable that the wash does not last long. The next step is to rinse in cool water. This stage is mandatory, otherwise stains cannot be avoided.

Spin mode

Jackets made of membrane fabric are difficult to wring by hand. When choosing a spin speed, preference should be given to the minimum number of revolutions. This is the only way to prevent damage to fabric fibers.

Powder selection

For Columbia Omni-Heat down jackets, you should select SMS in the form of liquid rinses and conditioners. Membrane fabrics are washed using cleaning compounds produced under such brands as Laska and Ushasty Nyan. When using powder, streaks appear on jackets. The porous structure becomes clogged, resulting in a sharp decrease in air permeability. The same can happen when using regular bleaches. Heavily contaminated areas are washed with baby shampoos, laundry soap and special gels. The latter can be purchased at the company store. If the label has a machine washable symbol, you will need a powder that does not contain bleaching elements.

When choosing a suitable product, you must take into account the color of the down jacket. For washing white jackets, it is not recommended to use SMS containing dye components. Columbia black products are recommended to be dry cleaned. This way you can reduce the risk of possible damage.

Preparing the Columbia Omni-Heat Down Jacket for Washing

Proper washing begins with careful preparation. The first step is to find the label that contains recommendations for caring for the jacket. If there is an icon on the label that allows you to wash the product without any restrictions, you can start preparing.

It includes the following actions:

  • all locks, zippers, buttons are fastened;
  • if there are edges or any fastened parts made of natural fur, they should be unfastened;
  • the most contaminated areas (usually the inside of the collar, cuffs and areas where the jacket comes into contact with the bag or backpack) are best pre-washed by hand using a delicate detergent;
  • with washed and soaked stains, you need to leave the down jacket for a while, about an hour;
  • Before machine washing, the jacket must be turned inside out.

If the product has natural fur inserts that cannot be removed, it cannot be washed either in a machine or by hand. Only dry cleaning or dry cleaning is allowed.
