If you're planning a trip to Thailand, you'll no doubt be wondering whether the food in Thailand itself will be the same as what you get at your local Thai restaurant. Will it be the same familiar food, or will the dishes and taste be different because these dishes have different recipes? As a rule, Thai restaurants outside Thailand are very similar to their originals, but you will not find such a variety of types and tastes anywhere else except in Thailand itself. We offer you a list and recipes of the most popular Thai dishes.
Vermicelli soup
Products and ingredients:
- 4 cups well-cooked chicken broth
- Small onion
- 2 pcs. lemongrass (sorghum)
- 2 kaffir lemon leaves
- 1 dessert spoon of kaffir juice
- 1 dessert spoon of garlic
- 2 chilli peppers
- 1 small peeled galangal root
- 2 tablespoons seafood or fish sauce
- 2 tablespoons sugar (palm)
- 100 grams instant noodles
- 20 grams coriander
- 1 spoon of salt
Preparation of the recipe for vermicelli soup:
Cook a rich chicken broth and salt it to taste. Add lemon grass, kaffir juice and leaves, chopped garlic, pepper, galangal root to the prepared broth and simmer over low heat for about 25 minutes. It is important that the broth does not boil too much.
Add sugar and fish sauce to the brew, stir well to dissolve the ingredients. The mass should be homogeneous.
Separately, soak the vermicelli in cool water and leave it to swell for 30 minutes, then drain the water and add to the boiling soup.
Coarsely chop the coriander leaves, add them to the soup and cook for about a minute over low heat.
Serve hot.
Som Tam (papaya salad)
Som tam - a sweet, spicy, salty salad made with chopped green papaya, tomatoes, garlic, shrimp, nuts and chili peppers - is one of Thailand's most popular salads. You will find it almost anywhere that sells food. The combination of flavors may seem unusual, but delicious. However, Thais like their som tam to be spicy, so when ordering this salad, make sure you have a lighter version of the dish in terms of spices.
Features of Thai cuisine
Thais love seafood and fish. They like salads made from fresh vegetables, mushrooms, and aromatic greens. Residents of the Land of Smiles will not refuse well-cooked meat - chicken, pork, and less often - beef, or rather buffalo.
What do Thais cook? It’s easier to say what they don’t cook. Thai cuisine includes dishes made from everything that moves, flies, and swims. You may well see crocodile kebabs and frog dishes on the menu, or see a hawker on the street selling fried insects.
Thai cuisine resembles the finest poetry. The chefs use only fresh products. They prefer dishes that are quick to prepare and like salty, bitter, sour and sweet tastes to be harmoniously combined.
Many tourists believe that Thailand has mostly spicy food. Thais like the spicy taste. However, the choice is so large that finding dishes without spice is not at all difficult.
Cooking lovers can try Thai recipes at home. True, it is not wise to completely copy them. The fact is that some ingredients are difficult to obtain here, others are expensive... If you want to get an unusual result and a pleasant taste, adapt Thai recipes to our Russian realities. Everyone at home will be delighted!
Tom Yum soup
This sweet, tangy, flavorful soup is traditionally made with large shrimp, mushrooms, and your choice of vegetables. In the most traditional version, the soup is boiled in water, but those who like experimenting have gone so far as to use coconut milk as the basis (although this option is more common outside of Thailand). And what’s also important is that Tom Yum can be very spicy!
They say that Tom Yum relieves cider hangovers, so if you had a really good time the day before, run not to the 7/11 store for beer, but to a Thai cafe for a plate of Tom Yam!
Ingredients for cooking Tom Yam with seafood (2 servings):
Ingredients for Tom Yum soup:
* Thai chili paste – 1 tablespoon;
* fish sauce – 1-2 tbsp. spoons (depending on its salinity);
* coconut milk – 60-100 ml; onion – ½ onion;
* garlic – 4-5 cloves;
* small hot peppers – 2-3 pcs. (of course, if you are afraid of spicy dishes, you don’t have to add it, but... then the whole point is lost!);
* lime – 1 piece;
* kaffir – 3-4 leaves;
* galangal (or ginger) – 1 small root;
* lemongrass – 2 sprigs; mushrooms – 150-200 g;
* cilantro – one branch; water or chicken broth - 0.5 l; shrimp 4-6 pcs.; small squids – 5 pcs.; * sugar - to taste.
How to prepare Tom Yum soup with seafood:
The Thais do not have exact recipes; they put the required composition and quantity of ingredients, trusting their chef's instincts, so there is no need to be meticulous - trust your taste and imagination. The total cooking time for the soup is 15 minutes.
Place a saucepan with broth (water) on the fire and add food there in the following order: chopped mushrooms, chopped galangal (or ginger) and kaffir leaves, cut into large slices of lemongrass. After everything has boiled, remove the pan from the heat for 5-10 minutes - so that the brew brews and all the herbs and roots give off their aroma. But especially hungry people can skip this step and immediately continue cooking.
Place back on the heat and add 1 spoon of chili paste, half a chopped onion, chili pepper and tomatoes. Add fish sauce at the boiling stage. It is better to start with one tablespoon and only then, if you feel that the soup is missing something, add more.
Then it's time for the shrimp. Mix everything well, add the garlic and after another couple of minutes, remove the pan from the heat, add coconut milk and squeeze out the lime juice.
Ready! Pour into bowls and add cilantro. Serve with rice and... eat with pleasure! Bon appetit!

Thai Sausage – Thai sausages
There are two types of Thai sausages: Isan sausages - sausages with pork and rice; and northern Thai sausages with herbs and spices. And don’t think that Thai sausages will resemble Russian ones. Both the ingredients and the cooking technique differ enormously. The combination of ingredients sounds unusual and a little repulsive, but their taste is very refined and quite good.
Soup with tom yum sauce
Products and ingredients:
- 5 cloves garlic
- 2 large chilli peppers
- 4 tablespoons sunflower oil
- Lemon zest
- 10 grams fresh ginger
- 2 spoons of sugar
- 5 grams lemon juice
- Half a liter of chicken broth
- 300 ml coconut milk (coconut cream)
- 375 grams peeled shrimp
- 120 grams of small champignons
Preparing the recipe for Tom Yum Soup:
To prepare the soup dressing paste, take the garlic, cut it into thin slices and lightly fry in a frying pan. Fry the chilli pepper, cut into half rings, until it changes color and darkens. Grind the garlic and pepper in a blender until smooth and fry a little again. Grate the ginger using a fine grater. Add lemon zest, juice, chopped ginger, sugar to garlic and pepper, mix well and simmer until the paste thickens.
Prepare chicken broth. When the broth begins to boil, pour in the coconut milk or cream and, stirring, add the dressing paste. Stir the soup while it simmers, continuously for 2 minutes.
Rinse the mushrooms well under running water, separate the cap from the stems and cut into large slices. Add them to the soup. Send the peeled shrimp there too. After all the ingredients have been added, cook the soup for a few more minutes.
