How to cook pea puree correctly: simple cooking methods

I am glad to welcome you to the pages of my blog! Tell me, what vegetable can be used to make porridge with nutritional value no worse than that of meat? Of course, from peas! There are many ways to cook pea porridge. For example, my son loves “empty” peas, only with butter. For my husband, I make various roasts, adding meat, brisket or stew. It turns out very satisfying and healthy: this legume is rich in vitamin A and improves metabolism. At the same time, the calorie content per 100 grams of porridge boiled in water will be only 89 kcal.

To prepare, take split peas: green or yellow. To reduce the cooking time, it is better to soak the cereal for several hours. If you don’t have time, the process can be shortened to half an hour by using cold water with ½ teaspoon of soda. Then you need to rinse it well - and you can cook. You can cook it in a saucepan or slow cooker, pressure cooker, simmer in the oven, and even a microwave will do! Seasonings usually include salt and ground black pepper.

What to serve with pea porridge? Baked ribs or pulled pork with sauce are great. You can simply lightly fry the onions and carrots and add spices.

Proportions of water and peas for delicious porridge

Pea porridge can be cooked in water or broth, but not in milk. Whatever liquid you choose, you will need the same amount. Also, the volume of the liquid component will not change depending on the cooking method: whether it is cooking in a saucepan or in a slow cooker. In a saucepan the dish will cook faster, but in a slow cooker the water will take longer to boil.

To get the desired result, it is important to know how much water is needed for a given degree of boiling:

  • for crumbly porridge, stick to a pea to liquid ratio of 1:2, excluding soaking water. For example, for 1 cup of cereal you will need 2 cups of liquid;
  • from a ratio of 1:3 you will get medium thick porridge;
  • A tender, homogeneous pea puree will come out if you use a 1:4 ratio.

When the liquid has boiled away and the cereal is not yet ready, add only hot boiled water.

On a note! A glass with a volume of 250 ml holds 200 g of unshelled peas and 230 g of shelled peas.

How to cook properly

You can cook peas in various ways. Previously, housewives used only pots for this purpose. Now almost every kitchen has multicookers, pressure cookers and other useful attributes of household appliances. Any of these devices will always come to the rescue, but for most women, cooking in a pan remains their favorite method.

How to cook in a saucepan

Cooking beans in a saucepan is the easiest way. After soaking, the culture must be rinsed several times in cold water until the cloudy sediment completely disappears. Place the prepared beans in boiling water, reduce the heat and cook, stirring occasionally. The proportions of water and peas during cooking are 3:1.

Cooking time for pre-soaked peas is 40-90 minutes. Everything will depend on the shape of the peas, variety and age. When cooking, a white foam almost always forms on the surface of the water. This is a protein that has coagulated due to high temperature; it must be carefully removed with a spoon. You can easily check the readiness of the beans by slightly biting the pea.

I prefer to make the porridge medium-cooked, when it is already tender, but the peas have not completely disintegrated. I pre-soak the legumes and leave them to swell overnight. It’s better to put it in a cool place - in such a period of time it can turn sour. After this, the dish cooks a little longer, but more evenly, and is better absorbed by the stomach.

Prepare for the recipe:

  • 1 cup split peas;
  • 3 glasses of water for soaking;
