How to bake salmon
One of the simplest and easiest forms of cooking fish in the oven. Wrap fresh or frozen salmon steaks in foil. Drizzle lemon juice over steaks and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Seal the foil well and bake the salmon on a tray in the oven. When the aluminum foil puffs up, this indicates that the salmon is ready.
This is a very easy dish, so if you're trying to eat healthy, you can enjoy a delicious dish with few calories. For another form of salmon preparation, prepare a seasoning ahead of time with olive oil, lemon juice, salt, pepper, basil and parsley.
Marinate salmon steaks in this mixture for at least an hour in the refrigerator.
Then heat the oven to 220ºC and wrap the salmon steaks in foil. Place them on a baking tray. Bake until salmon flakes with a fork, 35 to 40 minutes total.

Place fresh salmon steaks in an oven tray and sprinkle with spices typical of Italian cuisine such as marjoram, basil, sage, as well as pepper, salt and ground garlic. Add sliced champignons, 2 tbsp. spoons of lemon juice, and cover the baking sheet with foil. Bake at 200ºC for 20 minutes. Remove from the oven, while the fish is hot, sprinkle with grated Parmesan cheese and enjoy this delicious recipe.
And our latest baked salmon recipe is a delicious dish full of Mexican flavor. Place two salmon steak fillets in an oven tray. Top the salmon fillets with 1/2 teaspoon sauce anglaise, a few drops of lemon, and cajun spice mix (available in most supermarkets). Cover the fillet with foil and bake at 250 degrees for 20 minutes. Serve salmon with red beans and rice.
Why cook salmon in foil? There are only two reasons for this:
- The fish will turn out more juicy as it is cooked in its own juice.
- Salmon can be prepared in this way for those who are on a diet or want to reduce the calorie content of the finished dish. Meanwhile, salmon in foil will turn out much tastier, as if this dish were steamed.
How to cook salmon in foil? After cleaning and stuffing the fish, you need to wrap it in one layer of foil. Do this carefully, otherwise the fish juice will quickly flow out through the holes, and the dish will turn out a little dry.
Of course, you can cook salmon either in its pure form or by pre-marinating or stuffing it.
Salmon in foil - preparing food and dishes
How to choose fish and which one is best to buy for this dish? If you don’t know how to clean fish or are too lazy to do it, then buy fillets. However, be aware that deboned fish costs one and a half to two times more than unpeeled fish. In fact, gutting and conditioning salmon is as easy as shelling pears: cut off the head and tail, rip open the belly with a sharp knife and remove the entrails. It is best to prepare the fish cut this way if you want to prepare stuffed salmon. By cutting the carcass into portioned pieces, you will get steaks, which are best cut into two pieces lengthwise - this makes it easier to both cook and eat.
If you want to get salmon fillet, then cut the carcass lengthwise, remove the backbone and bones - this is not difficult to do, because a large fish also has a large skeletal frame. After this, remove the skin by simply prying its edge with a knife.
Salmon recipes in foil:
Recipe 1: No frills salmon in foil
In order to bake salmon in foil without any frills, you don’t need to spend a lot of effort. It's simple: clean the fish and, removing the bones and skin, add spices. Although this recipe is laconic, you can experiment with the finished dish to your heart’s content - add any sauce, serve with different side dishes or vegetable salads. By the way, it is best to serve salmon in foil with green salads, rice or white sauce.
Required ingredients:
- Salmon - any quantity
- Spices (basil, ground white and pink pepper are best)
Cooking method:
1. Prepare the fish. Ideally, you should cook salmon in foil after cleaning it, but you can bake fish even with skin and bones. Once cooked, removing the spine and bones will not be difficult. If you cleaned the fish, then rub the meat with spices and salt. After this, wrap the pieces in one layer of foil and put them in the refrigerator for half an hour.
- Preheat the oven to 180 degrees.
- Fill the deck in which the fish will be cooked a quarter full with water - as it evaporates, it will cause a kind of “greenhouse effect” that will prevent the fish from drying out.
- Place the salmon pieces on the deck and place in the oven for 25-30 minutes.
Useful tips
Oven-cooked salmon is a healthy, filling, tasty and easy-to-prepare culinary masterpiece. Among the advantages are the minimum time spent on cutting and processing a whole carcass. Using steaks or fillets further reduces cooking time.
Even a beginner can handle the task of cooking in the oven, because it’s simple. But there are several subtleties that will make cooking easier, help improve the result and end up with a blissful treat.
- The taste of the finished dish largely depends on the correct choice of the main ingredient. A chilled carcass is better suited for baking in the oven. In this form, the original benefits and taste are preserved.
- Buy a product that has a fishy aroma and a moderately rich color. A pale shade indicates age, and a too bright color indicates the presence of dye.
- Some housewives use frozen salmon. In this case, it is important to defrost correctly. To ensure that the carcass thaws and retains its structure, leave the fish in the refrigerator on the bottom shelf until the morning. I do not recommend defrosting in water, as the liquid has a bad effect on the taste and appearance.
- Do not defrost at room temperature, especially in summer. Warm air promotes the formation of pathogenic bacteria, and eating such fish is dangerous to health.
- If you bought fresh fish, but you can’t cook it right away, wash the carcass, remove the entrails, dry it slightly, put it in a glass container and put it in the refrigerator. Under this condition, salmon can be stored for three days. If you put it in the freezer, the period will increase several times.
- To cut the carcass, wait until it thaws slightly, but not completely. This way it is easier and more convenient to clean. Wash salmon only in cool water. Using warm liquid will spoil the taste and loss of juiciness. After the water procedure, be sure to blot with a napkin.
We figured out the intricacies of preparing salmon. It's time to look at popular recipes for cooking red fish in the oven. I offer time-tested recipes that have gained incredible popularity over the years and earned a lot of positive reviews.
Recipe 2: Salmon in foil with cheese
This dish will turn out delicious if you cook the salmon in foil for only half the allotted time. Then it will need to be deployed. The dish will come out very tender from the inside, with a delicious crust on top.

- Then place the pieces of fish on a deck filled with a quarter of water. Place the salmon in the oven, preheated to 180 degrees.

- After 15 minutes of cooking, remove the deck, unwrap each piece of fish and sprinkle generously with the nut-cheese mixture. Without wrapping, return the fish to the oven and bake for another 5-7 minutes.
Recipe 3: Salmon in foil with cottage cheese
This dish can be called a “protein bomb”, it is so rich in healthy protein. We recommend it to everyone who cares about their health.
Required ingredients:
- Salmon fillet - 340 grams
- Fine-grained low-fat cottage cheese - 150 grams
- Garlic - 2 cloves
- Sour cream - 2 tablespoons
- Fresh dill
- White sesame
- Spices
Cooking method:
- Dry the pre-cleaned fish and rub with spices and salt. For this dish you will need layers of fillet - preferably two of the same size. However, you can also use several thinner strips, but completely cleared of bones.
- Finely chop the dill.
- Squeeze garlic into cottage cheese, add chopped dill and salt. Grind the mixture in a blender, adding sour cream. Sour cream is needed so that the cottage cheese has at least a slightly viscous structure. Add sesame seeds to the resulting mixture.
- Spread the curd mixture onto one layer of fish and cover it with a second layer on top. Wrap the resulting “sandwich” in one layer of foil, then place it in the oven (on a deck filled a quarter with water). Bake the dish for 25 minutes at 180 degrees.
Recipe 4: Salmon in foil with potatoes
Boiled potatoes are a rather boring dish, but if you cook it according to the recipe described below, it will turn out to be a completely different dish. If you want to create both a side dish and a main dish in one fell swoop, then take note of this recipe.
Required ingredients:
- Potatoes - 5 tubers
- Spices, salt
- Olive oil
- Sour cream - 3 tablespoons
- Salmon fillet – 320 grams
- Garlic - 2 cloves
- Fresh dill
- Hard cheese - 200 grams
Cooking method:
- Wash the potatoes, peel them and cut them into two parts.
- Let's prepare the sauce. To do this, grate the cheese. Squeeze the garlic into the sour cream using a press, add chopped herbs and cheese, stir.
- Lay a sheet of foil on your work surface. On one half of it, after greasing it with vegetable oil, place half of the potatoes. Brush the potatoes with half of the sour cream sauce.
- Place layers of fish on the potatoes; also brush the fish with sauce.
- Cover the dish with half of the foil, then carefully place it on the deck. Bake salmon in foil with potatoes for 30 minutes at 170 degrees. Then test the potatoes for doneness by piercing them with a toothpick. If it turns out that the side dish is still damp, then you need to bake further, while reducing the temperature to 140 degrees.
Recipe 5: Salmon with vegetables
Another option for preparing royal fish, which will allow you to get not only delicious baked salmon, but also a side dish of vegetables. It is recommended to prepare the dish in such a way that the vegetables act as a “pillow” - their vapors will give the fish meat a subtle piquant aroma.
Required ingredients:
- Salmon fillet - 400 grams
- Bell pepper - 2 pieces
- Fresh tomatoes - 2 pieces
- Garlic - 5-6 cloves
- Fresh basil
- Spices
Cooking method:
- Prepare the fish - clean and dry, rub it with spices, then wrap it in foil and place in a cool place for half an hour.
- Let's prepare a vegetable “pillow” for the salmon. To do this, core the peppers and cut each into four pieces. Cut the tomatoes in half, peel the garlic, and tear the basil into leaves.
- Place a sheet of foil in the size of the deck, grease it with olive oil and lay out the vegetables. Also coat them with oil on top using a silicone brush. Place pieces of fish on a vegetable “pillow”.
- Wrap the dish in foil so that it is completely covered. Pour some water into the deck and place it in the preheated oven.
- Bake the dish for 25 minutes.
If you want to get a tasty crust on the fish, then 10 minutes before the salmon is ready, you need to open the foil and cook it further at a lower temperature (for example, at 140 or 160 degrees).
Red fish (pink salmon, chum salmon, salmon), united by one common name - salmon, is very popular, despite its considerable cost.
There are practically no bones in this fish, except for the spine with ribs. Despite the small scales, it is not that difficult to clean. Many recipes use only salmon fillets. In such cases, you don’t have to clean the fish, but simply remove the skin along with the scales.
Most often, salmon is baked in the oven. This type of heat treatment allows you to preserve most of the nutrients.
To prevent the fish from burning underneath, it is placed on a vegetable bed consisting of onions, carrots and other vegetables.
The delicate taste of the fish will become even more expressive if it is baked in a creamy sauce or with cheese.
Salmon can be cooked with potatoes. But you need to take into account the fact that potatoes take longer to cook than fish. Therefore, you need to take well-cooked potatoes and cut them into thin slices. Before baking, it is advisable to lightly fry the potatoes or boil them until half cooked.
Salmon is baked either whole or in the form of steaks.
A good solution is to use foil. It does not allow the fish to dry out, since the salmon is cooked almost in its own juice. This kind of salmon will appeal to those who are watching their weight and following a healthy diet, because the fish in foil can be baked without any fat or crispy crust.
- Most often, salmon reaches store shelves in the form of frozen steaks. When buying it, pay attention to the appearance. Pieces of fish should not be covered with ice. Frozen salmon has virtually no odor. If it has an unpleasant odor, you should refuse to purchase it.
- If you managed to buy a whole carcass, pay attention to the gills. They should be red, not gray, like stale fish.
- And, of course, it is unacceptable for the fish to be slippery to the touch or for pressure to leave pits on its body.
