Hawaiian Chicken and Pineapple Pizza

Friends, chicken pizza again, but this time in Hawaiian style, that is, with pineapples. This particular Hawaiian pizza recipe is prepared with chicken and pineapples and the result is a very tasty combination of white meat with exotic fruit. The latter in this baking is used in canned form, by extracting pineapples from a jar in their own juice.

If you haven't tried this combination when making homemade pizza, be sure to fill this culinary gap. I assure you, you will really like it!

You can buy pineapples already in the form of pieces, then you won’t need to chop them, although there are also cooks who bake whole pineapple rings in Hawaiian pizza. Although this is of course not for everyone. Now let's see how to make chicken and pineapple pizza - a Hawaiian recipe.

How to make Hawaiian pizza

  1. Prepare yeast pizza dough from 2 cups wheat flour. Stretch the dough onto a pizza baking pan and, covering it with a napkin, let the dough rise so that the pizza base is sufficiently fluffy, 2.5-3 cm thick.

  2. Many people argue that Hawaiian pizza should only be made with white sauce. Perhaps so, but I have only once tried pizza with a white sauce, apparently consisting of mayonnaise, garlic and spices. All other times the pizza came with normal tomato sauce and was extremely tasty. Therefore, you should not torture yourself and prepare 2-3 tbsp. l. good homemade tomato sauce.

  3. Peel one ripe tomato, remove seeds and peel, chop in a blender along with 1 clove of garlic, a pinch of salt and grated nutmeg on the tip of a knife. Season to taste and, if you want, you can add a pinch of Mediterranean herbs (oregano, basil, savory). Pour the resulting puree onto preheated water with 1 tbsp. l. olive oil in a frying pan and simmer until the sauce becomes thick enough to resemble ketchup.

  4. Typically, canned pineapple is sold in the form of rings or cut into cubes. By and large, it doesn’t matter how the pineapple is cut. But, purely for aesthetic reasons, I advise you to buy pineapple rings and cut them into quarters. For a pizza with a diameter of 34 cm, 5-6 pineapple rings are enough. However, be guided by your taste.
  5. Although Hawaiian pizza is made with bacon, let's stick with ham. Ham is a salted pork ham, sold in pieces or thinly sliced. Thin slices are great for Hawaiian pizza toppings. The size of the ham slices for the filling is arbitrary, but I recommend cutting the slices to the size of the pineapple pieces.
  6. The dough, stretched on the form, has already risen and become quite fluffy. If you find it too fluffy, you can compact it a little with your palms, reducing the thickness. Prick with a fork in several places. Brush the dough with tomato sauce.

  7. Evenly distribute the sliced ham pieces mixed with the pineapple pieces.

  8. Sprinkle with 1-2 pinches of dry oregano and drizzle with olive oil.
  9. Grate the mozzarella onto a coarse grater and distribute the cheese evenly, making sure that pieces of ham and pineapple peek out from under the cheese in places.

  10. As an optional addition, you can add a thinly sliced tomato or several halves of small cherry tomatoes. In this case, you should additionally sprinkle the tomatoes with a small amount of Parmesan. But this is all optional.
  11. Place the pizza to bake in an oven preheated to 200 degrees. The dish is baked for up to 20 minutes. Taking into account the characteristics of different ovens, after 15 minutes you should begin to control the readiness of the dough by lifting its edge on the baking dish.

  12. As soon as the dough begins to brown well, the pizza is guaranteed to be ready.
  13. By the way, many people do this if they wish, when the pizza has cooled down a little, i.e. no longer fiery hot, you can sprinkle a few small green basil leaves on top of the filling.

  14. Cut the finished Hawaiian pizza into 6-8 pieces with a roller knife and serve.

  • Hawaiian Pizza: The Most Controversial and Discussed Type of Pizza in the World

Since 2009, culinary debates about whether pineapple is appropriate on pizza have frequently taken place online, dividing pizza lovers around the world into two camps. Pineapple pizza is called Hawaiian, although this type of popular dish was invented in Canada. Its sweet and salty filling has been controversial in recent years. However, Hawaiian pizza has a whole story that goes beyond the Internet quarrel. It all started in the 1960s, when pizza was still new on the North American continent.

It all started in 1962, when Sam Panopoulos, a Greek who emigrated to Canada in 1954, decided to try his luck by opening a restaurant in Chatham, a small border town. Panopoulos named his restaurant Satellite and began selling regular American food such as hamburgers and pancakes. He soon realized that the pizza craze that was sweeping the United States would quickly make its way to Canada.

Although the Greek-Canadian chef did not pay much attention to the choice of pizza ingredients in the early years, the situation soon changed and he began to be interviewed. In 2021, Panopoulos told the BBC exactly how he decided to put canned pineapple on pizza: “We just put it on for fun, we decided to see how the combination would taste. We were young in the business and did a lot of experimentation."

Around the same time, America opened up to foreign cuisines thanks to the return of soldiers from exotic campaigns in the South Pacific. Thus, Hawaiian tiki culture became popular. Chinese dishes also appeared, which often mixed contrasting flavors - for example, sweet and salty.

These influences cannot be denied, as the presence of exotic flavors brought by veterans and migrants to the North American continent was responsible for creating a blend of flavors from different cultures.

However, the pizza experiment did not immediately gain popularity. In an interview in 2021, the pizza inventor said that “Nobody liked it at first. But later their opinion changed. In those days, no one mixed sweet and sour foods. It was simple food." The original recipe included a combination of ham and pineapple to provide a contrast of flavor. Soon other chefs adopted this innovative approach and began making their own variations of the dish.

From that moment on, the trend spread not only to the United States, but throughout the world. In Australia, for example, Hawaiian pizza has become the most popular type of this dish.

Panopoulos passed away on June 8, 2021 at the age of 83. His sole intention was to break the pattern of using conventional pizza ingredients and open up a world of new flavors.

However, his legacy remains as he sparked a minor revolution in the pizza business, helping pizza evolve from a traditional Italian dish to one of the finest examples of international cuisine. And thanks to him, Hawaiian pizza has become one of the most discussed dishes.
