How to cook:

Ingredients for cooking:

  • 200g smoked brisket;
  • 1 salted/pickled cucumber;
  • 4-6 toasts (there will be 2 times less sandwiches);
  • 1 bunch of leeks (white part);
  • 1-2 tbsp. mayonnaise.

Sandwich translated from German literally means bread and butter, but now it generally means a slice of bread with any of the snack products - ham, sausage, canned food, meat or fish products, cheese, caviar, and so on.

Who came up with such a snack? According to medical historians, the sandwich was invented by Nicolaus Copernicus, who, among other things, was also an astronomer, the creator of the heliocentric picture of the world. His invention of the sandwich was made for medical purposes.

The story is like this. As a young man, Copernicus studied medicine, but never received a doctorate. After this, his uncle made him a canon in Frombork Cathedral and at the same time commandant of Olsztyn Castle. The castle was besieged, and after some time an epidemic of an unknown disease began. Morbidity was high and mortality was low. Only 2 people died. Copernicus used drugs, but they did not give the desired result. Then he began to investigate the cause of the disease. He suggested that the reason may lie in nutrition. The doctor divided the inhabitants of the castle into groups, isolating them from each other and putting them on different foods. It soon became clear that only the group whose diet did not include bread did not get sick. This means that the reason is bread, which should be abandoned. But this was impossible to do, because there were no special food reserves in the besieged castle.

Coarse bread was the main food of the castle's inhabitants. Copernicus reasoned this way: the inhabitants of the castle walked along long corridors and climbed spiral staircases, often dropping bread on the floor, then picked it up, shook it off, blew off dust and dirt, and ate it. Perhaps the cause of the epidemic is this contaminated bread, or rather, the dirt from the floor? The doctor came up with the idea that he needed to spread the bread with something light and edible, against which the dirt would be easily visible. And then it won’t be difficult to clean off the dirt along with the grease. It was decided to spread the bread with heavily whipped cream without sugar, that is, butter. Thus, the sandwich was born. The infection has stopped. But the invaders never managed to capture the castle, nor did they find out the secret of the sandwiches.

After this, Copernicus shared his experience with the pharmacist and physician Adolf Buttenade. And in 1545, 2 years after the death of Copernicus, history repeated itself - after one of the wars, a similar disease appeared in Europe. Buttenade remembered the Copernicus sandwich method and began to actively promote it. Although the method did not help overcome the epidemic, many people liked the new dish and gradually began to spread throughout all countries.

  • mild spicy adjika – 2 tbsp. l.;
  • creamy thin cheese slices – 4 pcs.;
  • chopped parsley and dill - to taste;
  • clarified butter – 2 tbsp. l.;
  • rosemary – 1 branch;
  • coarse sea salt and freshly ground pepper - to taste.

Cooking method in stages:

  1. Sprinkle the fillet, cleared of films and skin, with coarse salt and pepper, then fry the meat in hot oil with a branch of fragrant rosemary. It is important not to overdo it with rosemary, otherwise the spruce smell will overwhelm the other aromas. After the crust has formed, close the pan with a lid and cook the meat until soft.   2. We cut the tomatoes and cucumbers into slices, and chop the onion into half rings.
